) (& FOR QUIET

Port Meadow Port Meadow is the largest area of common land in Oxford. Also, one of the very few places around where you can enjoy an uninterrupted view of the horizon. The land here has never been ploughed or turned and the cows are very friendly (sometimes). Perfect if you're looking for a relaxing state of mind not far from the city. You can find directions to it in our handy escape map! Iffley Lock on the River Thames If you meet the RiverThames (or Isis as it's called around here) at any point around town and head south along its footpath you'll discover the beauties of the Iffley Lock. You'll be welcomed by the quacking of ducks and the roaring sounds of the River and if you're looking for a sit down then the Isis Tavern on the west side of the lock is a real gem. Also included on our handy escape map. Oxford Central Library, Westgate, OX1 1DJ Very close to Modern Art Oxford, the library provides ample opportunities to enjoy people trying to be quiet, and the papery sounds of turning pages. We are sure there are some nice literary references to sound in here, too, and if you attend the HEARth Book Club event detailed opposite, you may find you are especially inspired to seek them out! Tel. 01865 815509 Open Mon - Thurs, 9am - 7pm, Fri - Sat 9am - 5.30pm, Sun - Closed.

(IN GENERAL)
Jacobs & Field ,15 Old High St., Headington, OX3 9HP This deli-grocer-cafe serves almost certainly the best coffee in Oxford. Old-grocery style decor, low-key atmosphere, fresh local ingredients, freshly baked bread, massive sandwiches, nice pies AND the guys who run it are genuinely friendly and welcoming. What else can we say; J&F has singlehandedly rescued the cafe culture in Oxford. Tel. 01865 766990 Open Mon - Fri 8am - 6pm, Sat & Sun 10am - 6pm. Vaults Cafe, University Church, High Street, OX1 4AH Conveniently placed in a central location, this space boasts the lovely acoustics of the old church its built in, and serves big platefuls of hearty fare. Tel. 01865 279112 Breakfast 8.30 - 11.30am, Lunch 11.45am - 3.30pm, Afternoon Tea 2.30 - 6.30pm. Georginas Cafe, 1st Floor, Avenue 3, Covered Market, OX2 7PL In Oxfords Covered Market you risk getting lost in all the smells and colours coming from the fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers and leather goods shops, and in the sounds and voices of the fishmongers and the butchers. If you want to let all that settle in over a nice cup of coffee and a bagel go upstairs to Georginas. Mind your head as you go in, the ceiling is low. Tel. 01865 249527 Open Mon - Sat 8.30am - 5pm. Oxfork, 39 Magdalen Road, OX4 3DH Slightly out of the way, but if you happen to find yourself on the bohemian, arty Magdalen Road youll really thank us for putting this one in the guide. Retro-chic would be the correct way to describe it, I guess, but this doesnt even start to explain in how many ways this cafe is amazing. Delicious cakes, a ton of different types of tea, scavenged china, art on the walls. A slice of paradise. (The best Eggs Benedict Stav had in her life). Tel. 01865 243280 Open Mon - Thurs10am - 5pm (Kitchen til 4pm), Fri 9.30am - 5pm (Kitchen til 4pm) Sat & Sun 9.30am - 6pm (Kitchen til 5pm). 10.

Bate Collection , Faculty of Music, St Aldate's, OX1 1DB Probably the only place in Oxford where you can wander in off the street and try your hand at the theremin, the steel drum, and other instruments. (IN OXFORD)
White Hart, 12 St Andrew's Rd, Headington, OX3 9DL Beautiful Olde Worlde Pub covered in wooden panelling and traditionally rustic. Tucked away in the quiet and picturesque village of Old Headington just across the road from St. Andrews Church. Tel. 01865 761737 12 - 11pm, Open til midnight Fri - Sat. Serves food. (Try the BBQ Ribs!) The Star, 21 Rectory Rd, OX4 1BU According to a reviewer, this is where you can find local band-members, their relatives, and their sound-engineers. The haters would call it a hipster pub, the lovers would say its the best pub on the Cowley Road Area. Also a good place to escape from the Internet as theres no wi-fi. Free pool on Sundays. Tel. 01865 248011 Open til midnight. The Port Mahon, 82 St Clement's St, OX4 1AW Friendly and relaxed pub a short stroll away from Oxford Brookes. Get someone who lives in Oxford to show you where it is after the concert at the Holywell (28th Feb) and if you cant get a table indoors, dont worry, they have heaters outside. (ON THE LAS T NIGHT OF AUDIOGR AFT AT THE AFTER-P ARTY!)

The QR code below can be scanned with a smartphone to reveal bubbling jam recorded for an installation at The Jam Factory in 2007! BUBBLE BUBBLE x

Conveniently located ten minutes from Modern Art Oxford, The Jam Factory is based at the historical landmark of Frank Cooper's Old Marmalade Factory, and has been serving food and art there since 2006. The Jam Factory has supported artists from Oxford Brookes in the past, and because the lighting, menu and winelist are just perfect for post-gig unwinding, HEARth is delighted to present the after party for Audiograft there. We are presenting a DIY disco, and will play any records that you bring, or tracks you want to hear from our collection of fun/ strange/wondrous sounds. Bring your records, or just your ears and the desire to play.

During the HEARth programme, STELIX will lead a sound walk from Modern Art Oxford themed around exploring the participatory project Make Sound Here by James Saunders. In the meantime, we thought wed give you the basics for joining in right here, because we reckon Oxford (like most places, really) is more fun with a little sonic intervention.

MAKE SOUND HERE is a distributed sound project by James Saunders that locates places where sounds can be made through interacting with the immediate environment. All the sounds are created through human interaction, rather than being ambient and always present. When you are out and about, listen to the world around you, paying attention to places where it is possible to cause interesting sounds to occur. When you find an interesting possibility for making sounds in a particular location, make a short audio recording of the sounds. After recording the sound, place the label in a position that makes the source of the sound clear, and photograph this situation. Remove the label on completion: please don't make a mess. Once complete, upload the recording and photo via makesoundhere.com or audioboo.fm/makesoundhere. Include a short description of how to make the sound, and make sure the location is marked on the map. http://www.james-saunders.com http://makesoundhere.com
