Recently the Ministry of Education has introduced 1 student 1 sport at school levels. Discuss. How could this help to develop exercise habits among school children?

Answer:

1.0 INTRODUCTION Sports should be integral to a persons life. This is due to the benefits in health that can be derived from it and also skills such as strategic thinking and teamwork can be learnt. Most people have benefitted from participation in various sports, but most voluntarily participated in the sport activities of their choice. The effort is important to produce students who are intellectually, physically, emotionally and spiritually balanced. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authoritys PE and School Sport (PESS) investigation concluded that physical activity has a motivational impact on children, increasing their self-esteem and general wellbeing. It also found that PE and sport helps children to develop essential social skills such as concentration, self-discipline, cooperation and an awareness of the need to think of things and people other than themselves. The earlier children are introduced to the learning and developmental processes inherent in good quality physical activity, the sooner they can benefit. Schools have the duty to not only educate their students but also to provide the foundation for students to become good individuals. holistic

2.0 GOVERNMENT PURPOSES

Back in time, in early March 2010, it was reported that the Deputy Prime Minister who is also our Education Minister had a two-hour meeting with his Education Ministry officials and the main committees of sport development in schools at the Parliament House. The outcome of the meeting was to bring back the glory of sports in schools through the implementation of the one-student one sport vision, which means a student must be involved in at least one sport in school and those students with poor health could be exempted. For disable students, the Minister said, the Education Ministry will take steps to ensure they are not left out. The ministry will be seeking co-operation from the Paralympics Council to provide proper amenities and training support. The basis of one sports one student intends to fulfill its objectives as to improve physical fitness among students, to develop characters, selfesteem, discipline and values, to foster unity among the races, to establish a sports culture among students, to satisfy the natural instinct of students in sporting activities, to provide balance between the academic and physical requirements and not to be miss to establish a platform to sporting excellence in Malaysia.

Other matters discussed and agreed upon in the meeting were: a. The Education Ministry will take steps to improve the current infrastructure in schools such as playing fields, sports facilities and equipments. b. The allocation for sports fund for each student in each school will be increased to RM4 for primary and RM6 for secondary schools. c. The co-curricular activities will account for ten percent of the students passing grade marks and five percent out of ten marks will be for students involvement in sports. d. The Minister also proposed that there will not be any extend of schooling hours, and will incorporate sports into the timetable so as to reduce of parents having to send students back to school after schooling hours. e. The implementation of 1 Student 1 Sport is going to make our students healthier. Studies show that lacks of exercises are the main factor of the declining alertness among students. As result, they would not be able to perform well in their studies. Though this has been told to the public in many forms but people are not paying much attention to it. Most of the people think that sports are just a waste of time because it does not carry any knowledge that could be used in the examination. They have lost their interest to participate in sports because it is not an important aspect in our exam orientated education system before this. I believe everyone should know that a healthy body and a fresh mind are the main factors that lead to a good result in education. Exercise could reduce the amount of low density cholesterol (bad cholesterol) in the body and eventually it will lead to a better blood circulatory system. When our brain got a steady and sufficient amount of oxygen, which is transported through the blood circulatory system, they are going to be able to think properly and thus, excel in studies. Besides that, I also believe that this concept can help us to nurture more all rounded students, who excel in all aspects including academics and curricular. As we look into our education system, students are assessed based on academics and curricular is ignored most of the time. Students tend to memorise the whole book instead of understanding it in order to pass the exam with flying colours, because they know that it is the symbol of glory and fame being named as the top students. Without skills such as leadership which could be honed through sports and society, our country is not going to go far from what we are now. Students have to be exposed to being a leader in order for them to learn the skills and this can definitely be done through sports in school because they can be the leaders among students in the sport team. On top of that, the concept can also strengthen the sense of unity and cooperation among our people. Education does not only lie on academics but also self improvement. Thus, learning the meaning of unity is part of the learning process that all students must go through. Students are able to play and work together through sports because teamwork is the most important and crucial factor that leads to a victory. Everyone loves to win and the force

that manipulates this feeling is going to push us to move forward. As a result, unity can be achieved because every one of us has the same goal, which is winning the game. The most important thing is at the same time we are able to form a one malaysia spirit among the students as envisioned by our Prime Minister.

Education Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had announced One Student One Sport. It was reported that sports would have a separate syllabus, and there will be an infusion of sports teachers to realize a dream of one student, one sport. Tan Sri Muhyiddin had set to kick-start this plan at year 2011 which would see sports has a separate syllabus and not be part of the co-curriculum, or uniformed bodies. There are benefits on this programme but we also may detect some weakness in this programme. Based on what Tan Sri Muhyiddin had said, sports subject will be separated from the syllabus and co-curriculum or uniformed bodies. That means this programme will need new hours and days to be implemented. For co-curriculum, it will be held every Wednesday evening. For sport subject, assume it will be held on Thursday evening. Of course it will interrupt time for evening school session especially for those who entered an Islamic School in the evening. Secondly, it may cause the increases of rate of student absenteeism. Usually on cocurriculum or uniformed bodies session on evening, students will take the chance to skip school because they dont like being too long in school. Some of the students also think it is not important especially for those who dislike havi1ng the activity in school. It is not impossible if the same thing happens to sport hours. Not all students like sports. Besides, it can increase the pressure of the students. Too many school activities will make them stress and affect their studies. They normally need a time to eat, do homework, do revision, to do house chores, to attend the Qurans class and to rest. All these activities will make them tired and stress. If there is more burden stuffed on them, they will exhausted easily especially a sports need a lot of energy.

5.0 POINT OF VIEWS

Balanced development can only be achieved if growth is accompanied by an improvement in the quality of life, which includes a reduction in social problems. It is found that the incidence of social problems increases with higher income levels and that involvement in social problems is negatively related to good values. Hence, in order to improve social well being, in particular to reduce the incidence of social problems, it is proposed that the focus be directed at inculcating good values. In order to curb the increasing social ills among students, the government has come out with a new concept for the nation called 1 Student 1 Sport. I do agree that the implementation of this concept is a wise move as I can only see the benefits of this concept. Students are going to be benefited through this problem in a wide variety of aspects and I do believe that parents are going to get a good sleep from now onwards. I personally agree such initiative which can help move and support the implementation of the Sport. If we want to introduce one-student-one-sport vision or policy, what the Ministry of Education should be concerned with is whether the teachings of Physical Education to our young students create the proper attitude towards sport and offer the knowledge and experiences that would encourage our young students to continue practice sport in schools and when they once leave the school. The most important things is how we can nurture the exercise habits among students. School should provide meaningful activities at break times and during lunchtimes. In many schools, the playground is the setting for a lot of challenging behaviour, so offering students a range of formal and semi-formal activities at break times and lunchtimes can have a significant impact. If students have something positive to do in the playground, they channel their energy into physical activity rather than getting involved in arguments and fights. They form new friendships, learn to cooperate and become more tolerant of one another. Offer a limited choice of activities at any one time for interest sustainable. This works on the same principle as childrens menus in restaurants the choices are attractive but limited. Students know what they are doing, are able to get on with the activity and feel they can succeed.

In addition, teachers should come out with cooperative activities. Teachers can guide students to use a team buiding concept in the activity. They will learn how to cooperate, work together to achieve a goal and get on with one another. By giving them a responsibilities, can have an impact on their behaviour far beyond the activity itself. Provide students with tasks and challenges that promote cooperation, problem-solving and teamwork during Physical Education lessons or in clubs after school. Teachers can introduce a simple activity breaks during lessons. This short and brief activity breaks can improve behaviour. Many students lose concentration when they have been sitting down for a long time. A short five- to 15-minute exercise break to do something active and exciting gets the oxygen flowing to the brain. They come back to their task in a better frame of mind and ready to behave better. Try to figure out an activity that can realease this mind and tenses. Teachers and adults that been around should take responsibilities to support any positive activity play. Students normally will observe and they are more likely will do the same.If students see adults behaving in a positive, active way, they are more likely to do the same. By receiving praise and positive feedback from an adult, can increase a studentss selfesteem and, in turn, improve their behaviour. By taking a more hands-on approach in the playground, midday supervisors are more likely to anticipate and stop incidents of unacceptable behaviour. As the demands of competitive sport continue to grow it is important to recognize that young people in talent development system require lifestyle guidance and proper training system plus all the sport science and medical support needed. This will ensure that our talented young athletes have access to the coaching and support which elite competitors need if they are going to be the world champions of tomorrow. It is in school that students discover their talent and their potential. They need the chance to try a variety of sports. They need high quality teaching of basic skills. They need opportunities to compete at a level in line with where their ability has developed. They need clear pathway into taking part at state, national and international levels, with the right coaching and the right support at every stage. By improving support to teachers of Physical Education, extending the range of opportunities available after school and providing school sports activities and facilities will harness the enthusiasm of teachers and

students. Thus, school must provide various types of sport activity so that all children were able to develop their potential and interest in sports. Physical Education programs aim is for lifelong exercise and promotion of the sporting model. Games during physical education classes can be used as a means to promote physical activity. Games are included among the activities in Physical Education programs that contribute to the improvement of skills that will help young athletes develop good physical and mental conditions. Unfortunately, as I look at our school system around the country, I am surprised by the incredible difference between what schools would like to do and what they are supposed to do. Schools are extremely conscious and are over concerned with academic excellence. Schools are interested to help students pass the many national examinations and disregard the total development of the student's physical, mental, social, and emotional dimensions. Key Points of Quality Physical Education: a. All students are required to take physical education b. Instructional periods totaling 120 minutes per week (primary) and 160 minutes per week (secondary school) c. Physical education class size consistent with that of other subject areas d. Qualified physical education specialist provides a developmentally appropriate program e. Adequate equipment and facilities Furthermore, the Sport Department and the Physical Education Department of the Ministry Of Education should be more involved in their core business which is Physical Education or education of the physical and school sport activities because the child not only brings the mind to school but the mind has a body to be trained and nourished. These two departments play a key role in the development and looking after the proper implementation of Physical Education and school sport activities. Let me ensure you that, if students are convinced that Physical Education and sports have a positive impact on them, they will pursue to lead an active, healthy and productive life style. They will integrate regular physical activity into their daily activities through participating in various sports and games with others or on their own which will give them a lifetime health benefits.

6.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, I do agree that the concept of 1 Student 1 Sport is good to be implemented in our education system as it could create a healthier group of students, nurture all rounded students and promote unity among all Malaysian. It will be more effective if we could take immediate action to upgrade the Physical Education and the Sports programs in schools moving in the direction with the true spirit of ONE-STUDENT-ONE SPORT vision of the Ministry of Education Malaysia. Though the process may be tiring and the result can only be seen after a long period of time, but I know that the benefits are going to be enjoyed in the future. Thus, I hope that the concept could be used throughout the time, with improvement being made from time to time so that our nation could enjoy the maximum benefits of it. This is in line with governments desire to promote a sports culture among the students to become productive members within society with healthy and active lifestyle.
