Happiness

Management

Yılmaz DÜNDAR
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

Almost all people aim to be happy

either consciously with a plan or
unconsciously without any plan. However,
upon asked, only a few of those who want to
be happy will be able to express what
happiness is or under which conditions they
can be happy. This being the case, the
following questions emerge:
How can we reach something that we
can not define clearly? And,
How can we make a life plan for
something that we do not know exactly?
Without answering such questions
satisfactorily, I do not think that our efforts
bring us happiness we wish.
There is another factor affecting
negatively our seeking for happiness. For me,
we usually confuse happiness with two other
terms, namely “comfort” and “pleasure”.
Indeed, we should be able to recognize the
states in our life described by these terms
and differentiate them from each other. In
other words, we should not suppose and
label a state of life that can truly be
described by “comfort” or by “pleasure” as
“happiness”. To make it clear, I would like to
give an example. Let’s suppose someone who
thinks that he will be happier if he can buy a

2
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

car. When he gets the car he wishes, for me

in reality, he does not become any happier
but just more comfortable. Similarly,
someone thinking that he will be happier if he
meets his uncle in the evening becomes just
more pleased, not happier, when his wish is
realized. For many, this view on the real
meaning of happiness may actually seem to
be an unnecessarily detailed one. For me,
however, such a careful view is so important
that our life will certainly be more difficult
when it is ignored.
Upon adopting above given view on the
real meaning of happiness, one notices that
happiness is closely related to the brain.
Indeed, it is an output of the brain. Hence,
the real happiness, not confused with comfort
or pleasure, should be thought in close
connection with the “wisdom”. One’s freedom
to use his wisdom and a caring environment
for the outputs of his wisdom bring him
potential happiness. Therefore, he should not
hesitate to use his wisdom freely because the
wisdom does not produce any false outcome
when it is used sufficiently. In other words,
falsity results from the insufficient use of the
wisdom.
The most significant output of one’s
wisdom is “decision”. In fact, decision is the
sole output of the wisdom that makes one

3
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

feel himself as human. It is the key for his

happiness. If this key is bereaved, it is not
possible for him to be happy. For example, if
we examine closely the case of a couple with
an unhappy marriage and problems in their
relationship, we see that each complains
about “falling on deaf ears”, “not being
considered important”, or “not being cared”
by the other. A careful look shows us that all
such complaints are closely related to their
state regarding decision. In fact, such
complaints are the direct result of inability to
take a decision, to express a decision, and to
feel the importance of a decision. As a result,
one with no freedom to take decision is
certainly subject to unhappiness; even if he
leads a very luxury life.
The presence of the freedom to take
decision is a sine qua non condition for one to
be happy, but it is not sufficient just itself.
The manner of presenting an idea, which is
the reflection of the decision in the reality,
also determines the level of one’s happiness.
Therefore, besides above mentioned need for
not confusing the state of happiness with
comfort and pleasure, it is also necessary to
be aware of the connection between
happiness on the one hand and “wisdom”,
“decision”, and “idea” on the other. The
manner of presenting an idea is so closely

4
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

connected with one’s happiness that a right

and correct decision may result in
unhappiness for him if it is expressed by an
inappropriate manner. Presentation of a truth
by an inappropriate manner constantly may
cause for the development of an antipathy on
the target person against that truth, even
make him an enemy to it.
In the light of the explanations given
above, I am of the opinion that “Happiness
Management” should be a way of life,
deserving a very high level of importance
from all of us. To make the content of the
term clear, in the following pages, I would
like to use a comparison method, which is
extensively used by the human brain for the
purposes of learning, recognizing, and
establishing correlations.
I will try to compare basic
characteristics of the people around us
dividing them into two main groups. These
groups of people lead two different ways of
life, which are the most common ones in the
society and can easily be observed. I have
labeled these two stereotypes as “the idea
owner” and “the idea porter”. While the idea
owner represents those with the way of life
that is suitable to manage and ready to
experience happiness, the idea porter
represents those with the way of life that will

5
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

never be able to experience happiness. To

make the comparison followed easily, the
behaviors or attitudes of the former are
coded by an “A” and those of the latter are
coded by a “B”. The same number given with
both letters shows the behavior or the
attitude of the each group being compared
with each other. By means of this
comparison, it will be possible to obtain the
tips for the Happiness Management.
1. A) The idea owner recognizes easily
“the truths” that are in compliance with “the
Universal General Truths”. Consequently, he
notices his own wrongdoings without any
difficulty and tries to correct them. Since the
truths he knows enable him to notice his own
wrongdoings, the idea owner does not feel
any inconvenience from listening to the ideas
with some truths and from being with the
people who develop ideas. In other words,
because the idea owner has a philosophy
based on ideas, he prepares the ground for
the development of ideas and encourages
people to do so.
1. B) Contrary to the above explained
behavior of the idea owner, the idea porter
usually thinks that he is right. Indeed, in his
mind, it is already decided that he is “the
right”. Therefore, it is usually very difficult for
such a person to notice his wrongdoings;

6
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

sometimes, it is even impossible for him to

do so. Due to this constant manner of
behavior, the idea porter often feel
inconvenience from the people who develop
ideas, and even find such people as “know
all”.
2. A) The idea owner has got the
“accepting” human nature. However, we
should be careful about the meaning of the
term “accepting” used here since the benefits
from its practice depends largely on the
condition that it is well-understood
previously. If an act of accepting results from
such attitudes as “lack of care” or
“necessity”, it is a more dangerous act than a
none-accepting one. A person who is involved
in a wrongful behavior will blame the other
person who has previously accepted this
behavior with an attitude of lack of care. On
the contrary, when the act of accepting we
are trying to explain here is noticed by the
target person, he appreciates the person
performing this act previously. This is one of
the basic distinctive features to be considered
in understanding its real meaning of
accepting human nature.
“Accepting” shortly means “to love
what exists as it is”. For someone to have got
this nature, there should not be any feeling
of being obliged to accept something. The act

7
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

of accepting with some degree of accepting

the inevitable, coercion, or indifference is
mainly an emotional and relative behavior,
and thus, wrong. On the contrary, the
attitude of “loving what exists as it is” is a
universal approach. Those who love what
exists as it is do not try to change, redesign,
or make similar to themselves the people
they are in contact with, knowing that such
attempts are wrong. They also know that
they are not capable of changing any person
other than themselves. However, if you
accept the universal attitude of loving a
person you are in contact with as he is, this
will provide the opportunity for that person to
change himself.
The best example for the act of
accepting what exists as it is is the soil. The
soil accepts and enjoys the seed planted into
it as they are. This act of accepting provides
them with the opportunity to change,
displaying their hidden skills to grow into new
entities. This is also valid for individuals. If
you “love your kids as they are”, you provide
them with the opportunity to display their
skills, to use their unlimited internal power,
and to change themselves.
The act of accepting we are trying to
explain here also prevents someone from
criticizing, or even blaming, others around

8
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

him unnecessarily. This gives him the

opportunity to experience the benefits of self-
critics. Let’s take a couple, a kid and his
parents, or two friends, who are not on
speaking terms with each other. If we ask
separately each partner in these groups the
reason for his/her anger and sulks against
the other, the replies will mostly include
criticizing or blaming statements on the
other. If we also ask him/her the condition to
make peace, to cease sulks, and to maintain
good relations with his/her partner, he/she
will usually demand that the other change
himself/herself and take new steps. On the
contrary, in case of adopting the act of
accepting what exists as it is, asking
himself/herself what he/she can do for
maintaining his/her relations in peace, each
partner will turn himself/herself and make
the list of acts to be done by him/her instead
of blaming the other, or listing the terms to
be fulfilled by the other party. If both parties
to a relationship accept the other as he/she
is and makes the list of acts to be done by
him/her, problems in their relations
disappear.
2.B) It is nearly impossible for the idea
porter to have the act of accepting in his
relations towards others. On the contrary, he
tries to dictate himself to others. He is also

9
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

so eager to be confirmed that he uses every

opportunity to do so with any subjective
evidences. Since he supposes himself as “Mr.
Right to be confirmed”, he blames those who
act contrary to this assumption for being
thoughtless, sometimes for being silly, and
shows a bad temper against them.
3.A) The idea owner gets excited from
learning truths, which increases his
astonishment. The acts of recognizing,
discovering, learning the truths, and at the
end being astounded by them create a
complimentary process in which each of
these acts triggers one another. The idea
owner wants to learn truths not just for the
purpose of knowing them but particularly for
building a life style in accordance with them.
Today, having knowledge on something
is no longer an important qualification.
Technological advances have made it so easy
to reach any knowledge that keeping a great
deal of knowledge on a certain subject in
one’s wisdom has become an unimportant
qualification. Consequently, it is now more
urgent to gain new skills for learning and
using the means for reaching information
together with abilities on universal languages
commonly used for that purpose. Given these
new facts, it has become a weakness and
debility not to pace with universal truths and

10
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

not build a way of life based on them. In

other words, compliance with universal truths
has become an appreciated qualification.
3.B) For the idea porter, it is sufficient
to know the truths and tell them when asked.
Making such truths as a part of his life is not
much important for an idea porter. He tries to
be excused by others using such false
statements as, “there is nothing to do for
me”, “I am like this, what can I do?”, or “it is
my habit that is not easy to change”. In other
words, what an idea porter tells regarding
truths does not comply with his life practices.
When we tell him this contrast, he may reply
us repeating the common saying that “obey
to what the pope preaches, but do not act as
how he acts.”
Let me describe you a very commonly
observed act of idea porters. When you look
at their speeches, conversations, statements,
or articles, you see them as being very
democratic, environmentalist, respective to
human rights, and believer of social justice.
However, when you look at their relations
within the family or business environment,
you see them being involved in oppressive,
forbidding, and even fascist behaviors. When
you make observations on their life
objectives, consumption habits, plans for
future etc., you can see them as being

11
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

genuine capitalists. In short, you can get the

impression about them as being democratic
in terms of speech, fascist in terms of
practice, and capitalist in terms of
consumption habits. Isn’t such a person a
perfect idea porter?
In order to make the understanding of
the above explanation easier, I would like to
make some quotations from two important
thinkers. The first one is from William Hersey
Dewis. Comparing the acts of two different
individuals, he says, “There is the first person
who wants to develop a character. That
character makes him either happy or
unhappy. Character is those things that the
angels will tell Allah about a person. There is
the second person who wants to develop a
reputation. That reputation makes a person
either rich or poor. Reputation is those things
that people will write down about a person on
his gravestone.” The second quotation is from
Tolstoy who summarizes the subject very
wisely with a well-designed formula: “If we
represent the value of the man by a
fractional number, the dividend of that
fraction symbolizes the real personality
(character) of the man, while the
denominator shows what he thinks who he is
(his reputation). Of course, as in
mathematics, when the denominator

12
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

increases, the value of the fraction

decreases.” Consequently, we can conclude
from this formula that increase in one’s
character will contribute greatly to the
success of that person in happiness
management, making it easier for him to be
happy.
4.A) When we look at the ideas
expressed by the idea owner, we see that
they are about systems. It is “the system”
that the idea owner always tries to
understand and questions. Therefore, when
he aims to find out the reasons behind an
event, he starts with asking the question
“what is wrong” rather than asking “who is
wrong”.
4.B) On the contrary, we notice that the
ideas of the idea porter are usually related to
individuals. In other words, the idea porter
develops his ideas by questioning people
instead of the system. Therefore, he starts
with asking the question “who is wrong”
when he investigates the reasons behind a
mistake.
5.A) The idea owner builds his decision
on sound data, that is, the database for the
decisions of the idea owner has got a
scientific nature. When he is in an emotional
mood, he avoids from taking decisions as
much as possible. In addition, the idea owner

13
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

does not take into account the decisions

taken by others on emotional basis no matter
these decisions are sympathetic or
antipathetic to him. In other words, the idea
owner does not develop his attitudes or
behaviors towards other people depending on
emotional data or decisions regardless of
their content. In short, his acts derive from
the ideas developed on the basis of his own
scientific database.
In the introductory paragraphs on the
happiness management, we mentioned the
particular importance of presenting a
decision, which always reflects an idea, in the
right manner. Now, it would be useful to
make some further explanations on decision.
First of all, we should know that a
decision which is not good enough is better
than any indecision. Yavuz Sultan Selim, the
great Ottoman Sultan, underlines wisely this
fact by saying, “Courage brings victory,
indecision brings danger, and cowardice
brings death.”
On the other hand, every “decision”
includes certain risks. Considering such risks
and hesitating to incur them, some people
fear to take decision, and thus, they
experience the danger of indecision.
However, we should know that “risk” is a
manageable state and it is not a right act to

14
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

hesitate or fear from manageable situations

whose command is in our hands. While every
“decision” includes a certain risk, indecision
causes for uncertainty which is not a
manageable state. Since their commands are
not in our hands, we should hesitate or fear
from uncertain situations.
While we develop a sense of
irresponsibility in the process of
“uncertainty”, whether we notice or not, we
undertake a responsibility in the process of
“risk management”. This strengthens our
sense of responsibility which can be defined
as the state of giving an account of those we
did and those we could not do. Being a
superior personal characteristic, the sense of
responsibility can be divided into two main
types. The first type is the one which arises
from the state of giving an account to an
external authority or a person. The second
type, on the other hand, is the one which
arises from the state of giving an account to
ourselves rather than to an external body.
For us, it is the second type of responsibility
that is the most perfect and desirable one
given that it is not possible for a person to
deceive himself. On the contrary, a person
with the first type of the sense of
responsibility, the one which derives from
giving an account to an external authority or

15
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

a person, may deceive that external authority

or person. Therefore, for the idea owner, he
himself is the sole body to be accountable.
We can summarize the comparison
between decision and indecision by the
following formulation:
Decision + Risk Management +
Responsibility = Success
Indecision + Uncertainty +
Irresponsibility = Absurdity
There are two additional conditions for
“decision”: It should be taken on time and it
should be right.
Supply of the necessary information or
data into the decision-making process is
another strengthening resource for
“decision”. In other words, it is very
important to provide supporting information
or data to all kinds of decisions in all
situations. This is reflected in our daily life by
the statement as “I would like to make
consultation on this or that subject.” This
means that consultation is an integral part of
any decision taken by the idea owner. Put it
differently, the idea owner is strongly bound
to the practice of consultation when taking
any kind of decision related to his
administrative roles: whether he takes
decision about himself and his family, or

16
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

about his apartment, his district, his city, and

his country etc.
Sustainability of the decision is also
important, which can be defined as the stable
continuation of the taken decisions. Some
people are reluctant to give up their
previously taken decisions, thinking that such
an act is closely related to honesty or
bravery. A common statement by these
people is as follows: “Once I declared my
decision, I can not turn back on it.” If such
insistence on the taken decision results
simply from stubbornness, this is not the
stability or the sustainability of the decision
we are trying to explain here given that
stubbornness is an emotional attitude which
should not be made a basis for any decision.
Those decisions that are taken on the basis
of emotions can not be sustainable, and even
they are mostly not right. On the other hand,
only those decisions that are taken on the
basis of scientific information or data and
have got a philosophy can be sustainable.
It is possible for us to equip our
decisions with universal features. This
universality will bring higher standards for
our happiness management. The first step for
universality is to learn the global views and
experiences, resulting from the latest
scientific and intellectual developments, on

17
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

the subject about which we want to take

decisions. It has become very easy to carry
out this first step in today’s world owing to
the widespread use of the advanced
telecommunication technologies in our daily
life.
The next step should be taking of
certain decisions that match our needs using
the available sources, instead of making up
false excuses for indecision. This second
step can shortly be described by the well-
known cliché as “think global, but act local”.
The third step required to ensure the
universality of the decision is that it should
have the following important aspect, without
which it is not possible to avoid from
localization. This aspect, which must be an
integral part of the decision, requires that
universality should start with local values and
elements, but should not be stuck in
localization. By doing so, it will be possible to
keep our decisions away from the false
perspective expressed by the statement as
“that’s enough; there is no need for further
qualifications.”
Another point I would like to discuss
here is the sanctity of the decision. For me,
“sanctity” arises, in real terms, from the
combination of knowledge and freedom. This
view can be used for defining the sanctity of

18
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

the decisions. Accordingly, any decision taken

on the basis of free will and unprejudiced
wisdom has got a sacred nature. In this
connection, there are two main ways for
someone to get rid of his prejudices. Firstly,
he may give up his existing prejudices by
replacing them with new ones. By this way,
he thinks that he has become free from
prejudices, which is, in reality, not the case.
Secondly, he adopts knowledge instead of
prejudices, which results in a real purification
from his biases. If you give up your
prejudices by knowledge, for knowledge, and
in accordance with knowledge, you get
purified from them in a sustainable manner.
Actually, it is this kind of purification from
prejudices that yields real freedom for
someone.
A life based on such sacred decisions
becomes sacred itself. In other words, when
knowledge and freedom become an integral
part of someone’s life, there is no room for
taboos and prejudices in it. Thus, his
decisions and life become sacred. However,
sustainability of such sacredness requires the
availability of the democracy for the
decisions, which can be ensured by the
application of the following three principles.
The first principle is that the target groups of
a decision to be taken should be informed

19
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

and made be aware of it in a right manner.

This rule is valid for every target group
whatever its size is, that is, whether it is the
family, the smallest unit of the society, or the
nation, the biggest one.
In fact, if we aim to ensure the
adoption of several attitudes and values as a
way of life all over the country, we should
first aim to ensure their adoption within the
family. Particularly, the values of democracy,
human rights, and protection of environment
should initially be ensured as a way of life
within the family or among the members of
the family. The target group is the family
which is the main unit for solution.
Informing and awareness-raising are
important issues of today that must be taken
into account urgently. The presence of some
units within the public authorities to inform
and be involved in awareness-raising
activities for the target groups of a decision
to be taken will constitute a good example of
the democratic practice. Informing and
awareness-raising activities for the target
group are not ordinary practices that are
done reluctantly. They are rather necessary
basis for the democracy of the decision. The
second principle required to ensure the
democracy of the decision is that the
participation of the target groups into the

20
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

decision-making process, particularly into the

session during which the decision is to be
taken, is guaranteed in accordance with the
universally accepted democratic practices. It
is obvious that the desired results from such
participation can be achieved in close
connection with the first principle mentioned
above since there is a positive relation
between informing and awareness-raising
activities for the target groups and their
participation to a decision. The third principle
required to ensure the democracy of the
decision is that the arising responsibilities
from the decision is determined and shared
by the related parties with granted matching
authorities.
Another point I would like to discuss
regarding the decision is that correctness and
strength of a decision depend on the number
of the brains involved in making the decision.
Two brains are always superior than one
brain, so are three brains than two,
producing superior outputs. However, for the
success of such partnership, it is not
sufficient for the participating brains “just to
come together.” Rather, they must be
complementary to each other, capable of
developing common ideas, thinking together
and inspiring from each other. The greatest
power in this century in the near future will

21
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

be the potential of the individuals who learn

how to work together.
When someone sees some new high-
tech devices which he has difficulty in
understanding their working mechanism and
in using them without taking explanatory
courses, he is surprised at how one brain can
think and design these devices. However, we
should know that such complicated devices
are the products of several brains integrated
very well to each other.
The unlimited powers of the integrated
brains make people tend to team-work.
However, it should not be ignored that team-
work is a brain activity that must become a
habit. In other words, team-work can not be
achieved by command or by giving orders.
Therefore, the team-work described here has
no connection with a group of people coming
together by the feeling of absolute loyalty to
a leader. It is an important virtue for
someone to include those who are superior to
himself into his team, granting freedom to
their brains.
By asking a simple question, it is
possible to understand whether or not a work
or an output has resulted from a team-work:
“Can someone produce this alone?”. If the
answer to this question starts with “No”, this
means that the given output, whatever it is,

22
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

is a product of a team-work. Through a

team-work, we can obtain a more advanced
product than the one designed individually. In
terms of originality, superiority, and
distinctness, the product of a team-work
resembles a good music played by an
orchestra with different instruments directed
by one chief. The brains that notice the
significance of team-work get great pleasure
from this work and its products, which
constitutes an important drive for involving in
it. In other words, when the brains recognize
the potential power of their partnership with
each other and get the pleasure of it, they
become excited for being a partner to team-
work and hurry up to do so. The reason
behind the pleasure that the brains get from
integrating and producing together is the fact
that they have a universal basis that does not
enjoy separatism. Therefore universal love
and peace is the aspiration of the brains that
are saved from prejudices and reach their
universal basis which is against all kinds of
separatism and discrimination. Therefore, it
is a priority and an urgent need to put into
effect an educational policy that will ensure
the preparation of our kids’ and youths’
brains for team-work during their learning
and training process. In addition, possible
solutions for the chronic national problems
should be revised in the light of the above

23
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

given explanations. Since some drastic

problems arise from various acts of many
different people as though they constituted a
team, solutions to such problems should also
be found through the team-work. In fact, if
the problem to be solved is a product of
several brains, solution to this problem can
not be produced by only one brain.
The high level administrators
responsible for critical decisions should
differentiate decision-making from decision-
taking very well. They do not confuse the
authority of decision-taking with that of
decision-making. The two phenomena,
decision-making and decision-taking, should
be considered as completely different from
each other, each of which requires different
skills and processes. Those who make
decisions may lack the necessary skills for
decision-taking. While decision-making
requires a team-work based on the flow of
multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary
scientific data, decision-taking requires
entrepreneurship, courage to chance a high
risk, and determined follow-up.
It is a dangerous way of management,
which is usually impossible to be prevented
from, that those having the authority of
decision-taking carry out this task with the
psychology that they are always “clever,

24
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

right, and know everything”. However, we

should bear in mind that the rightness and
strength of a decision increases when the
decision-taker uses his authority and
available resources to set up a team to make
decisions within a free and democratic
environment as well as ensuring the flow of
necessary information in usable form into the
decision-making process. The main task of
decision-makers, through the team-work, is
to prepare alternative or multiple options for
a decision to be taken by decision-takers.
The tasks of opting among the offered
alternatives, implementing the chosen
decision, making necessary follow up, and
concluding it are closely related to the skills
of decision-takers.
5.B) Contrary to the idea owner whose
decisions depend on his universal data-base,
it is a habit for the idea porter to act in
accordance with his assumptions in his life.
This means that his ideas and decisions
derive mostly from his assumptions. Even if
the idea porter has got a nature that gives
importance to the science, he can not avoid
from conditioning his acts on assumptions.
He frequently uses the statement as “sorry, I
had thought so”, if he has got the virtue of
making excuse. Therefore, he takes decisions
when he is in an emotional mood, for which

25
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

he usually regrets later on. In other words,

such states as romanticism, ambition, hate,
grudge, compassion, cheer contribute greatly
to the decisions and ideas developed by the
idea porter. It is again the assumptions that
are the causes behind these states which are
not appropriate for human being. If the
assumptions of someone increase his
excitement, he can not avoid from acting
with prejudices. In other words, assumptions,
which do not certainly derive from
knowledge, foster prejudices, even make
them indispensable characters. Most of the
hurt and umbrage that the idea porter
frequently experience with the individuals
around him derive from his assumptions. We
should not forget that knowledge guides man
to reach the truth, whereas assumptions take
him to trouble.
6.A) The idea owner is a good listener.
He is very careful about looking at the face of
the person to whom he is listening or talking.
He listens to others to understand them
rather than seem to be kind enough to listen
to them. It is quite important for the idea
owner to establish sound contacts with
others. The first step to do so is to
understand the other person or make him
notice your intention and efforts in this
direction. If you wish to reach a consensus

26
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

with others on something, you should first

understand them. You can help others even
by just listening to them: If you listen
someone twice or three times, you help him
discharge his feelings and get relaxed.
6.B) On the contrary, the idea porter
always wants to be listened. He can not
endure to listen to others. When he is
enforced to do so, he has difficulty in looking
at the face of the speaking person and deals
with other things while waiting impatiently
for the end of the talk. However, the idea
porter can not endure not to be listened while
he is speaking. In such a case, he sometimes
acts combatively indicating that he perceive
this an insulting attitude against him. If he
has got an authority, a high position, or
power, he displays this particular
characteristic of idea porters more strongly.
7.A) The idea owner trust in other
people. He builds his plans on this
confidence. However, this confidence of the
idea owner does not derive from naiveté or
stupidity. On the contrary, it derives from his
nature of loving what exists as it is and
accepting people as they are. It is this type
of confidence that influences the decisions of
the idea owner.
In this connection, Pestalozzi states
that in order to gain love and trust of others,

27
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

you should first develop love and trust

towards them. He puts it as follows: “Love is
not stimulated by anything except for love.
Similarly, trust is not stimulated by anything
except for trust.” This means that if you wish
to be loved, you should first love others and
if you wish to be trusted in, you should first
trust in others.
7.B) The idea porter usually does not
trust in anybody, building his acts on doubts.
However, doubting yields perception of
threat, by which a rebellion is triggered and
the system becomes unable to work.
Assumption, doubt, and prejudice are
interdependent states that stimulate and
increase each other. Those who make their
decisions on the basis of this trio can not
avoid from having constant conflicts in their
relations with others, including their family
members, relatives, and close friends.
8.A) For the idea owner, everyone is a
different world and a different library to
benefit from. He considers others as
individuals to consult with. He is well aware
of the fact that it is possible to develop
original ideas through inspiring from the
ideas of others, so each man has got a great
value of his own as a source of inspiration
which should not be drained.

28
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

8.B) For the idea porter, individuals

around him are those who should be
disciplined. Because of this attitude towards
people, the idea porter is chary of praise. For
him, people are not source of ideas but that
of problems. Therefore, he behaves people
around him like a psychologist stating the
sentences that start with “your problem is…”
9.A) The idea owner knows how to
consider an issue from other points of view.
In other words, it is not difficult for him to
make empathy. As a result, he can easily
make consensus or compromise with others,
which is one of the most important merits of
the idea owner. Indeed, debating becomes a
good act when it is possible to develop new
living conditions at the end through
compromising and meeting at least common
denominators.
9.B) The idea porter wants and expects
everyone to share his point of view regarding
the issues on the agenda. He blames those
who do not agree with him for lacking
capability of grasping and understanding the
matter. He thinks that others can find the
truths only if they adopt his view since he
believes that “he is right and clever, so he
knows best” regarding almost every matter.
This assumption of the idea porter makes an
obstacle for him to share the views of others.

29
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

If he is in power, there are a lot of distant

friends around him, who always tell him “yes,
you are right” to ensure their own interests.
The idea porter loves such friends much
more.
10.A) The idea owner neither feels sad
nor has got fears in his life. Sadness is an
emotion related to the past. In other words,
the recurring sorrows arising from someone’s
past experiences constitute the state of
sadness for him. If this state of sadness
becomes a way of life for an individual, it will
negatively affect the new days to live, new
decisions, and new ideas to be developed by
him. However, instead of living constantly in
the past thorough imagination, the idea
owner knows how to throw the lessons of the
past to the winds. For the idea owner, both
the experiences of his own and those of
others are important sources to benefit. What
is important for him is to use and benefit this
source properly. It is meaningless for him to
use the word “I wish…”, which will transform
the past experiences into sadness. He is
aware of the fact that he can not bring the
past forward and intervene to the events
occurred in it any more.
On the other hand, fear is an emotion
related to the future. The idea owner is
always hopeful for the future. In other words,

30
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

he has a constant hope for the future, which

prevents him from fearing it. This unending
hope of the idea owner arises from the fact
that he always has got a goal in his life. He
determines the priorities of his life and put
goals to be pursued daily in conformity with
these priorities.
In this connection, one of the main
characteristics of the idea owner is that he is
busy with something at the present moment.
He is certainly involved in an action in the
light of his past experiences and his hopes
for the future goals. He plans certain actions
wishing to make his past experiences and
future goals a part of his life. The
experiences, goals, hopes, and priorities of
the idea owner require him to manage his
time properly.
10.B) The idea porter lives anxiously,
that is, uneasy feeling has become a habit for
him. At the root of this anxious life led by the
idea porter, there are the factors related to
the past and the future. The prints of the
past events make emotional acts dominant in
the life of the idea porter. One of the most
distinctive attitudes for the idea porter is that
he bears grudge against the related people
regarding the past events, which sometimes
influences all his acts. He exposes his
persistent grudge by saying “no longer can

31
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

you regain my confidence, I will never forgive

you!” On the other hand, feeling of sadness
about the past produces for anxious acts for
the future. Since the plans and the goals of
the idea porter for the future usually can no
avoid from the trio of assumptions – doubts –
prejudices, he feels fear, anxiety, and new
suspicions for the future. Because of all
these, the idea porter can not be sure about
the present moment he is in and he feels
uneasy. He usually wastes his time by
planning actions. The state of anxiety makes
an obstacle for him to manage his time
properly.
11.A) The idea owner has got the type
of wisdom that is transparent to other
people. In other words, transparency is a life
principle for the idea owner. The people
around him trust in his views without feeling
any secrecy regarding them. This transparent
ways of thinking and acting save others from
assumptions, by which the vicious circle of
assumptions – doubts – prejudices is broken.
11.B) Secrecy gives the idea porter
ease. He supposes that he will be powerful if
he thinks, plans, and implements something
secretly. By the term secrecy here, I mean
the hidden parts of a matter that the related
people normally have the right to know under
the valid social rules. When they fail to learn

32
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

a matter through the normal communication

channels in the daily life, they may fall into
the trap of assumptions. It is not difficult to
guess the manner and results of the
relationship between a person who is stuck
with the vicious circle of assumptions –
doubts – prejudices and an idea porter who is
fond of secrecy. When we notice the bad
intentions of the idea porter and question
him about them, he tries to evade the issue
saying “it is not a very convenient time now
talk about it.”
12.A) Idea owners are very sensitive
and careful when they express their ideas.
For them, relations with others are the issue
that has to be given the highest importance.
He knows that people develop their attitudes
towards an idea, giving priority to the
manner by which it is presented rather than
to the content it has. The more positive is
this attitude, the more pleasing are the
relations. Experts say that the facts
expressed calmly are more effective in
changing the views of others than threats or
use of force.
In addition, regarding a task to be
done, idea owners think “how to do it” rather
than “how to make it done.” While the former
attitude include a transparent team-work
based on shared authorities and

33
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

responsibilities as well as division of tasks

among the members in accordance with their
knowledge and skills, the latter attitude
include all or some of the following elements:
command, deception, threatening, and lack
of appreciation for the services of others at
the end.
Furthermore, idea owners present their
ideas in an explanatory manner. They are
kind and patient enough to convince others if
it is required so. In this connection, another
attitude adopted by idea owners as a way of
life is that they express whatever they wish
to say in the best possible way and they
perform whatever they wish to do in the
most esthetic and softest possible way. The
idea owner adopts this attitude in order not
to get any appreciation or be praised by
others but for his belief that a person should
normally act so without expecting anything in
return.
Finally, achieving to edify themselves
very well, idea owners never get angry with
someone whatever the matter is and
whoever the individual is. They never anger
others deliberately, by planning, or through
their acts. They give so much importance to
the honors of others that they do not offend
them. And finally, they are not offended by
others since they have managed to love

34
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

“whatever exists as it is” without any

difficulty. It is possible to express shortly this
perfect state reached by the idea owner by
four words as follows: no angry, no angering,
no offend, no offended.
12.B) Idea porters express their ideas
in a dictating manner. Even their ordinary
dialogues have got a dictating tone. The
reason behind this is their assumption that
they have a mission to teach the truth to
others. That’s why they always try to change
someone whom they disapprove. In other
words, they are not aware of the fact that no
one has got the power to reshape another
individual. Only if you approve of an
individual as he is, you equip him with the
power to change himself. It is very important
to create desire and power for the people to
be changed since man can only change
himself, not anyone else. The dictating
manner adopted by the idea porter does not
crate any positive impacts on people even if
what they tell consists of truths and right
suggestions. This behavior specific to the
idea porter is one of the reasons behind the
difficulty faced by parents in making their
kids understood the truths.
In addition, it is significant for idea
porters to keep an eye on the behaviors of
others and infer some meanings from them.

35
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

Since they build their plans on assumptions,

idea porters always watch people around
them, or make others do so on behalf of
them, to develop necessary assumptions on
which they build their plans. They tend to use
a third person to contact with others as they
do not have the courage for a face-to-face
discussion. Idea porters feel obliged to
maintain the vicious circle of assumptions –
doubts – prejudices.
Idea porters suppose the silence of
others on a given matter as a reflection of
the success of their dictating manner.
However, someone who takes others for fool
that do not understand anything regarding
the matter in hand is perhaps the biggest
stupid on earth. The individual may usually
be reacting silently as follows: “What do you
think who you are? I know how to do my task
and can perform it much better than you
can!”
Furthermore, idea porters impose bans
on others to support their dictating manner.
They exploit such terms as forbidden, sin,
and shame to a great extent. It is a common
way for idea porters to use these terms to
frighten people and make them accept their
own ideas as the only way for a solution.
Then, through some minor pleasing acts
towards those previously frightened people,

36
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

they try to prove that, in reality, they have a

good intention.
13.A) The idea owner would prefer
guidance to command in his relations with
others. For the purpose of motivating people
in the positive and right direction, he tends to
use some incentives and awards. The
following quotation from Can Dündar, a
famous Turkish columnist and writer, reflects
the strong desire of the ruled people in
Turkey for such a method: “We are seeking
for a coordinator rather than a shepherd for
us. And, we would rather live humanly than
die heroically.” Indeed, the desire of man is
to be guided rather than be commanded and
faced with acts and attitudes that disclose
their hidden skills and abilities and improve
them.
13.B) The idea porter wants to
command people rather than guide them. He
expects them to act in conformity with his
own desires and views. When the people
under his administration make some
mistakes, the idea porter considers
punishment as the only possible way to help
them correct such mistakes and find the
truth. The obedience of individuals to his
orders under threat of punishment, without
believing it by heart, gives the idea porter
the impression that he is right in using such

37
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

methods. He verbalizes this feeling to the

people around him saying as “You have
finally understood how to act well! Use of
force is the only efficient way to make you
work! You see now who I am!”
In this connection, it is possible to
divide the ways of ruling into two main
groups. While the first one can be called as
“Suppress and Command”, the second can be
called as “Develop and Guide”. The idea
porter prefers the first way of ruling, that is,
“Suppress and Command”. Adopting this
method as a life principle, the idea porter
uses every opportunity to help him suppress
the people around him. The second way of
ruling, that is, “Develop and Guide”, is a
nightmare for the idea porter. He is afraid of
the individuals who try to develop
themselves, so he secretly erects barriers for
the factors to develop them. However, to give
the impression that he supports the people
around him, the idea porter sometimes paves
the ways for those factor that will make a
minor contribution to their development in
real terms.
When the idea porter faces the
necessity to appreciate others for their
achievements, he does this in a sarcastic
manner. In addition, if he plays even a minor
role in this achievement, the idea porter is

38
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

very careful not to neglect to remind it to the

related individuals and to make them confirm
his own role in it. However, such manner and
attitude of the idea porter towards the
achievements of others make them run away
him.
14.B) Another characteristics that
distinguishes definitely the idea owner from
the idea porter is their attitudes vis-à-vis
power. While the idea owner considers the
power as a mean to be shared with others
and to protect them, the idea porter uses it
to “suppress”, “destroy”, and “impose silence
on” others.
For the idea owner, each individual has
got a power derived from his own
distinctness from others. He should use this
power by sharing it with others and to
protect them when necessary. When he does
so, he is uplift and becomes more powerful.
It is a fact that a shared power with others
increases by the number of the sharing
individuals. However, idea owners are also
aware of a very important fact in this
connection that they should not seek for or
expect to any price in return for sharing their
power with others or using it to protect them.
Knowing that happiness management is the
outcome of the wisdom – decision – idea trio,
the owner is very eager to use his power for

39
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

the protection of the freedom of thought. It is

obvious that “the power” used to protect the
freedom of thought also becomes “sacred”
given our previously developed definition of
being “sacred” as “the point where freedom
and knowledge meets each other”, A power
to protect the freedom of thought exists
inside every man as a value producing his
distinctness. By using this power, individuals
have the opportunity to make their
distinctness sacred. However, these sanctities
are not the values to be worshipped. On the
contrary, they constitute the steps by which
freedom will bring man the universal love and
peace, that is, the universal truth.
The idea owner is aware of the fact that
the distinctness of someone from others and
power derived from this distinctness bring a
great responsibility for him. His fearing that
he may not carry out this responsibility
properly makes the idea owner feel himself
powerless rather than powerful. That’s why
being conscious of the fact that the
distinctness and power in his hand actually
belongs to those who need them, the idea
owner do not claim any possession on this
distinctness and power, directing them to
their actual owners.
I would like to give an example for how
someone shares the power derived from his

40
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

distinctness with the related individuals and

uses it to protect them. Let’s imagine that
you have to walk across a very busy street
during rush hour. As a healthy adult, it seems
easy for you to do so. As a matter of fact;
you never think about whether it is easy or
difficult for you to walk across a busy street,
playing down your distinctness that make it
possible for you. Then, you see an old man
with a white walking stick as a sign for his
blindness. Obviously, unlike you, it is difficult
for him to walk across the street. Thus, you
notice your distinctness from the old, blind
man, which enable you to walk across a busy
street. You also feel keenly the power in your
hand derived from this distinctness. However,
as an idea owner, you never think to use this
power to suppress the old, blind man. On the
contrary, you approach immediately to help
him walk across the street safely. If required
so, you even hold his arm. Unconsciously and
without expecting any price, you feel it
obligatory to help for an unfamiliar man who
can not see you as you are to appreciate.
Even, you blame yourself for being careless if
he experiences a difficulty in crossing the
street by stepping down a hole on his course.
Is it not surprising that you accuse yourself
for such an event, though you are the
powerful one? Actually, the answer is NOT! It
is you, not the old man, that have got the

41
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

ability to see. In this case, this ability makes

you responsible, under which you also feel
yourself as powerless. Despite your
distinctness, the state of powerlessness you
experience here, that is, the feeling that you
are not the owner of any power in actual
terms, brings your heart a great deal of
peace which is difficult to be described,
doesn’t it? After you help him walk across the
street, you look behind the old man to see
him proceeding on his way safely. This puts
you at ease and, then, you intend to return
to your work. However, for a short while, you
may have difficulty in recalling what to do
since the peace you feel in your heart for
helping the old man causes you to forget the
work you were to do just before seeing him.
Even if the old man does not thank you for
your help, you do not care it. You also do not
mind that he does not see you as his helper
to appreciate. On the contrary, it is the
secrecy of this sharing that brings you further
peace. By this event, you notice your
distinctness and share the power derived
from it with a man in need of it and used this
power for the protection of him. This kind of
sharing and protection described here is the
principle adopted by the idea owner in using
his power. Use of all your distinctness and the
powers derived from them as much in
conformity with the given example as

42
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

possible will bring you the kingdom over the

boundless country of the humanity.
14.B) On the contrary, for the idea
porter, “power” should be used to suppress
the people around him. Hence, being afraid
of that “power”, these people know the limits
of their capacity. For the idea porter, “power”
should also have an effect on the wisdoms of
people around him so that they can not think
freely. Since he believes in disciplining the
ideas of people as the easiest way to control
them, instead of free ideas, the idea porter
enjoys the ideas similar to those of his own
and the individuals who produce such ideas.
He considers the individuals who think and
express his thoughts freely as a potential
cause for the violation of the order.
Therefore, he supposes that he will prevent
this violation if he uses the powers in his
hand particularly to prohibit free speeches
and thoughts. However, the silence of the
suppressed people by this way resembles the
silence of the galley slaves who wait for an
opportunity to rebel. When this silence
accumulates in the course of time, the
presupposed power of the idea porter
becomes unable to prevent it from erupting
with a great noise. It is the presupposed
power of the idea porter that will first yield to
this new force and collapse. The idea porter

43
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

can notice how great the energy arises from

the freedom gained by the silent people can
be only at the very last moment.
Detecting the extent to which his power
becomes unable to suppress people, the idea
porter imposes bans to maintain his power
and strengthen its suppressing affect.
Dividing people into two main groups as
those who obey his bans and those who do
not, the idea porter awards the first group
while punishing with severity the second one.
In doing so, he aims to create the slaves of
his order which is supposed to be maintained
in peace through suppressing people and
making them accept his power. Prohibitions
and slaves are the supporting basis for the
idea porter’s narrow world.
15.A) The idea owner has got a
personality that enjoys serving others. Please
be patient enough not to reply as “this is not
extraordinary! Almost everybody enjoys
serving others.” Serving here has got a very
important specialty. That is, it is done not
only without expecting to or seeking for any
price in return but also without judging or
criticizing the target group. In other words,
serving by the idea owner arises from the
sense of “giving”; there is no room for a
desire of “taking” behind it. Particularly, this
serving is not related to any expectation for a

44
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

bigger return. For the idea owner, there is no

difference between “a service done for a
greater and better return” and “gambling”.
The fact that the idea owner
approaches the people, even the whole
nature, by a feeling of “what I can give” and
establishes contacts under this feeling
constitutes a very important step for
ensuring the universal love and peace. As
mentioned previously, the distinctness of
individuals from others means that they have
got the power to share with them. It is this
distinctness that makes up the core of the
feeling of giving by the idea owner. All these
make the idea owner give priority to the
interests of the community.
15.B) On the contrary, the idea porter
enjoys being served by others. He believes
strongly that the individuals under his rule or
his relatives have to serve him.
Consequently, in his mind, he divides the
people around him into two main groups as
those who serve him and those who do not.
The idea porter blames the latter group for
being ungrateful. He determines not only his
attitudes and acts towards this group but
also the rights to be granted to them in
accordance with this assessment. By this
way, the idea porter thinks that he shows
them their place. Due to the given

45
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

personality, idea porters also establish all

their contacts with people under a “what can
I get” approach. They never forget the
benevolence and goodness they did for
others. When they meet someone for whom
they have previously helped, idea porters
first see their help, then the related
individual.
Idea porters also claim that they work
for the community. Indeed, you can see them
being involved in many social activities, even
in organizing them. However, through such
activities, idea porters actually seek for their
own interests rather than that of the
community.
Similarly, when you pierce beneath the
show of the acts of benevolence or goodness
by idea porters, you notice that they are, in
reality, actuated by low and selfish motives.
They have got a voracious appetite for being
appreciated for those acts that they consider
as benevolence or goodness. Therefore, they
tell repeatedly such acts to those who
appreciate them to get additional
appreciation.
Family environment is of great
significance regarding the subject in hand. As
a matter of fact; it is necessary to consider
family environment as the first forum where
all problems are dealt to find appropriate

46
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

solutions. It is not possible for a housefather

to be successful in happiness management so
long as he considers that his wife and kids
have to serve him and determines his acts
towards them in accordance with this view.
Those who approach to the members of
their society with a “what can I get” desire
become the “cruel masters” of that society.
On the contrary, those who join their society
with a “what can I give” feeling become
“sublime leaders” for that society. When the
cruel masters die, they become tiny.
However, when the sublime leaders die, they
get greater and greater day by day.
16.A) Idea owners give more
importance to the quality than the quantity in
conformity with the old saying that “not the
envelope but the letter inside is important”.
In addition, they are in favor of pluralism,
that is, they also give importance to the
common understanding in the society. The
passion for freedom, which is the primary
characteristics of the idea owner, requires
respect to the common understanding in the
society.
16.B) Idea porters exposes attitudes
that give importance to the quantity. They
want to obtain prestige through their image.
In addition, idea porters are in favor of
augmentation rather than pluralism, that is,

47
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

they are not interested in the common

understanding in the society but the number
of the people joined them. They get proud of
the gathering of people around themselves,
considering those people loyal to them to
such an extent that they are ready to die for
them. This proud provides idea porters with a
great pleasure.
17.A) The essence of the ideas offered
by the idea owner usually aims to repair or
improve something. The term “ideas” used
here should not be misunderstood as being
unrelated to the daily life. It would be wrong
to think that idea developing is an outcome
of a specific intellectual effort. On the
contrary, if one examines carefully his daily
life and the events in it, he finds out that he
develops quite many ideas and presents most
of them to others in a day.
The ideas developed by idea owners
have got an inclusive nature, that is, they
include even the ideas of those who think
that they have got different opinions. This
inclusiveness of the ideas developed by idea
owners arises from the fact that idea owners
always focus their wisdom on oneness and
unity. In addition, it is remarkable that the
ideas and thoughts of idea owners have got a
relaxing and pleasing nature.

48
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

The aim of these acts by the idea

owner is to create a movement of
understanding that will ensure universal love
and peace.
17.B) On the contrary, the ideas offered
by the idea porter usually aims to prove the
justness of his complaining point of view or
strengthen it. If they cause others to
experience the assumptions – doubts –
prejudices trio, idea porters regard
themselves as successful. When you examine
their ideas, it is possible for you to find them
out in the form of criticizing, worrying, and
terrifying. You can also regard these ideas as
the difficulties injected into the life. If idea
porters are in the position to have got some
authority and power, they draw your
attention as overwhelming individuals for the
people around them. These individuals tend
to label those who are involved in some acts
and attitudes that they dislike as being
“careless, lazy, gormless, and clumsy.
Obviously or secretly, dividing
constitutes the core of the ideas developed
by idea porters. The so-called “Divide and
Rule” method of ruling adopted by idea
porters puts them at ease, giving them the
false impression that they are right.
18.A) Idea owners use goodness to
overcome evil they face. In such a case, they

49
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

never consider to be involved in some

counteracts that are justified by a “tit for tat”
understanding. Having a wisdom that is
ready for forgetting both the badness done
against him and the goodness he does for
others, the idea owner takes care not to
forget the goodness done for him. At the
platforms for discussion, the inevitable
victory of good ideas in compliance with the
universal truths against bad ideas is, in
reality, the victory of the trio of “wisdom –
decision – idea”. On the other hand, it is the
assumptions – doubts – prejudices trio that is
defeated under the arbitration of genuine
truth. Composed of idea owners, all soldiers
of the victorious part are of equal rank
without any hierarchy. However, the
members of the defeated part, who are
bound to the assumptions – doubts –
prejudices trio, develop a hierarchy among
themselves based on fear.
18.B) Considering the “tit for tat”
approach as the only valid method to be
adopted, the idea porter gets his first
relaxation through the justification provided
by this approach for his possible counteracts
against someone. His ultimate relaxation
takes place after performing the planned
counteracts. However, such methods for

50
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

relaxation are in strict conflict with happiness

management.
The fact that idea porters can not relax
unless they take revenge creates a spiteful
image of them among the people around. It
is an important distinctive feature of the idea
porters that they bear a grudge against
others and develop a recurring trio of
“assumptions – doubts – prejudices.” While
the “wisdom – decision – idea” trio is
important dynamics for happiness
management, the “assumptions – doubts –
prejudices” trio constitutes dynamites for it.
Therefore, it is necessary to adopt the
methods that strengthen these dynamics and
make them sustainable on the one hand and
eliminate the given dynamites on the other.
19.A) For the idea owner, the manner
for the implementation of his decisions, i.e.
for his actions, is also important. In addition
to the previously mentioned necessity of the
wisdom basis for decisions and the
importance of the manner in the presentation
of such decisions in the form of ideas,
determination of the middle course in putting
these ideas into practice constitutes
necessary conditions for the sustainability of
the happiness management. Accordingly, the
idea owner seeks for the middle course in his
actions. By doing so, he avoids from extreme

51
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

actions. Determination of the middle course

for his practices is, of course, different for
each individual. One can not achieve it by
imitating others. Therefore, it is more
important for an individual to know himself
well than others. One who knows himself well
can easily determine the middle course for
his actions fitted best with his own
characteristics regarding every matter.
Development of new middle courses on
higher standards for the actions related to
one’s skills that he plans to improve brings
him success.
Idea owners know that the middle
course in the relations with others means a
consensus on the least common
denominators. For them, the sustainability of
such relations is an important condition for
the happiness management. It is a big failure
for idea owners to cut themselves loose from
other people, leave them, or become unable
to experience peaceful co-existence. It is the
state of our relations with others that
determines the visible and traceable degree
of our success in the happiness management.
Those who aim at universal peace can not
exclude other people for any reason
whatsoever since such an action impairs
universality. Idea owners attach not less
importance to the happiness of the society in

52
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

which they live than that of their own. This

requires respect to the least common
denominators among the different members
of the society. Attempts to increase the
number of such least common denominators
get these members closer to meet on the
basis of the wisdom. They know that the
“assumptions – doubts – prejudices” trio
makes it difficult to reach a consensus among
the people in the society on the least
common denominators.
Idea owners believe the necessity to
ensure the state of security and peace among
the people with different views. Besides this
necessity, their acceptance on the sanctity of
the decisions taken by free will and liberated
mind from prejudices makes the governance
with democracy indispensable for idea
owners. For them, democracy is the
threshold for an acceptable form of
government. Any other proposed form of
government under this threshold can not be
put on the agenda by the idea owner, even as
an alternative to be discussed.

53
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

19.B) On the other hand, idea porters

tends to be fanatic in their opinions,
decisions, ideas, and particularly in their
practices. This fanatic point of view makes
them discriminatory individuals. In other
words, the idea porter adopts an approach of
“those on our side and those not” towards
people regarding several matters. If he can
not find a suitable and encouraging
environment to put this approach into
practice, he certainly does so secretly in his
mind. However, “DISCRIMINATION” is the
key factor that causes individuals to fail in
happiness management. It results from the
practices and conducts performed fanatically.
These practices and conducts cause
individuals to be discriminatory by providing
justification for such approach and making its
adoption easy. However, the fanatic manner
of behavior is not a product of the wisdom
given that it requires meeting at least
common denominators and adoption of the
middle course. On the contrary, this manner
is a product of the “assumptions – doubts –
prejudices” trio.
Despite the fact that fanatic behavior
has got so many dangerous outputs, our
society has yet to announce the encouraging
factors for such behaviors as wrong. On the
contrary, views that encourage fanatic

54
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

conducts are still common in our society.

Idea porters who potentially tend to be
involved in fanatic practices and actions are
not satisfied with a life based on the middle
course understanding and least common
denominators. Their readiness for bearing a
grudge against others breaches all possible
contracts on such values.
The “fanatic manner of behavior”,
which is a product of the assumptions –
doubts – prejudices trio inevitably results in
two events: “DISCRIMINATION” and
“VIOLENCE”. The latter is the ultimate target
for which the trio of assumptions – doubts –
prejudices tries to obtain. On the contrary,
happiness management requires to be
separated and away from this target, that is
VIOLENCE, as much as the separation and
distance between East and West. Indeed, it is
not possible for a happiness seeker to be side
by side with violence.
Encouraging the young to be idea
owners is a pre-requisite for their success in
the future. However, they should be very
careful about the sources that inspire their
ideas. If a source, e.g., an article, a film, or a
seminar, from which the young try to develop
their ideas reflects such an approach that
“those who do not think like us are not with
us”, this is a sound indicator of the definite

55
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

falsity of that source. Even, if the source

contains the truest or the most sacred ideas
of the world, it losses its value due to the
falsity of its approach. Any idea developed by
a discriminatory approach, as reflected by
the motto “they are not with us”, is neither
true nor sacred. The reason behind this is the
fact that all views deviating from the
universal peace and love are defective.
A discriminatory perspective results in
violations of rights in practice. The
discrimination between “man” and “women”
is an example of such practices by idea
porters. The degree of the respect to the
rights of women in a society can be seen as
an indicator of its level of civilization. From
this perspective, the human rights of
“women, children, and handicapped
individuals”, who constitute the group at risk,
have got a priority and urgency for our
society. The concept of “human rights”
includes “respect to and protection for the
honor of human being, ensuring of healthy
and balanced living conditions that are
sustainable, and governance based on
democratic principles.” Upon examining the
human rights of women, we should compare
the present status of our women with the
universally accepted norms and standards
reached at the 21th Century. According to a

56
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

recent survey by the UN, two out of three

(2/3) of the works in the world are being
done by women, only one out of ten (1/10)
of the total income are being earned by
women, and one out of one thousand
(1/1000) of total private ownership belongs
to women and two out of three (2/3) of those
who are illiterate are women. For me, the
efforts that aim to grant equal rights for
women with men can not be successful.
Especially, long-term success requires the
adoption of positive discrimination
perspective for women. This perspective
should not be understood as giving some
extra rights to women. Such an
understanding will make it difficult for us to
cognize the real meaning of positive
discrimination for women. On the contrary,
positive discrimination is the perspective to
ensure justice on this matter, which can be
defined as “granting someone with what
he/she deserves.” Therefore, even if it may
seem that women are granted with some
extra rights by this approach compared to
men, it is possible to do so when the above
given definition of justice is taken into
account. In fact, it is possible to talk about
equal status for men and women only after
ensuring this perspective. In case the priority
is given to ensuring equal rights for men and
women instead of justice, it may not be

57
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

possible to guarantee equal status for them.

Therefore, a desired “status” for women
should first be determined, and then, the
areas where some measures of positive
discrimination is required for women in
accordance with the present conditions
should be determined together with the time
span necessary to put them into practice.
The determined areas should be reviewed
and readdressed in the course of time.
The place of women in the community
and the importance of their role in solving
the present problems in the world have
recently been better understood. It has also
been understood that family environment is
the primary context in solving the national
problems related to the concepts of “human
rights”, “democracy”, and “environmental
protection”. Within the family, the role of the
woman is of great importance in ensuring
these universal values to become the way of
life for our society. For a perfect performance
of this role by women, it is first necessary to
give importance to their rights and ensure
them fully. To do so, adoption of “positive
discrimination perspective for women”
constitutes a pre-condition or a sine-qua-non
criterion.
The positive discrimination perspective
in favor of women ensures justice and results

58
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

in equality in the status of men and women.

Consequently, attempts to ensure positive
discrimination for women in compliance with
the situations they are in and the activities
they are involved in indicate a civilizational
aspect.
20) Idea owner considers the universal
truths and the ways to reach them as the
means for happiness management. He also
knows that getting the truth or attaining the
right is only possible through the interaction
of ideas at democratic platforms. For the idea
owner, ensuring “peace” and “development”
requires free thinking and free expression of
thoughts by the individuals.
On the other hand, idea porters make
bodies, rather than ideas, collide with each
other, using the existing differences among
the ideas as an excuse for such fighting. For
the idea porter, use of violence is inevitable
on the way to “the truth” or “the right”. At
this point, we can list the cornerstones for
the occurrence of violence as follows:
assumption, doubts, prejudice, fanatic
manner of behavior, discriminatory
perspective, and violence. Since the idea
porter starts to act by his “assumptions”,
“use of violence” becomes inevitable for him
at the end. On the contrary, since the
“wisdom” basis of the idea owner blockades

59
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

his assumptions and makes them ineffective,

the final destination for his journey is to
reach “the truth”.
The strong desire of the idea owner to
reach the truth urges him to enjoy different
ideas. As a result of this, a secure and
peaceful order emerges depending on the
principles of openness and rule of law.
Conversely, the idea porter thinks that he will
be secure only among those who share his
ideas. Because of this fear from other ideas,
the idea porter does not give opportunity for
such ideas to survive. Idea porters accept
democracy only so long as it fits with their
ideas, ignoring its basic character of being an
assurance for the freedom of opposite ideas.
While idea owners support the freedom of
expression for the preservation of peace and
order in the society, idea porters believe in
the necessity of banning people from
speaking freely for the same purpose. The
natural outcome of this attitude is “violence”.
There are four primary attitudes that can
remove violence from the minds of
individuals as a possible way of action. Being
interrelated to each other, these attitudes are
as follows:
1. to have an idea,
2. to learn how to debate kindly,

60
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

3. to develop the ability to reach a

compromise with others on common
grounds,
4. to put the reached compromise into
practice within the society.
Having an idea is very important but
not sufficient itself. It is also necessary to
learn how to have his ideas race with those
of others. This attitude is of great importance
given that those who do not have the ability
to have their ideas race either make their
bodies collide with others or find a way to
numb themselves. Worse still, they
sometimes both let their bodies collide and
numb themselves. In other words, someone
who can not solve his problem with others by
using his tongue (speaking) tends to solve it
by using his hands. Consequently, availability
of forums, means, and other opportunities for
solving problems through discussion is a
basic requirement for ensuring democracy. In
a real democratic environment, violence and
other kinds of repressive acts or attitudes are
considered as embarrassing practices
necessary to be kept away.
While idea owners who feel that they
have reached the truth through having their
ideas race describe the outcome as “the
victory of the truth”, idea porters who adopt
the way of making their bodies collide with

61
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

each other consider the result as “the victory

of their side”. Those in the former group give
priority to ransack their conscience, whereas
those in the latter group have got a more
materialistic attitude. It is inevitable for idea
porters to tend to use others for their own
sake. However, it is equally possible for them
to be used by others.
Idea owners have got the capacity to
make the troubled environment around them
perceived as if a rose garden. In other
words, individuals around the idea owner feel
relieved by the energy released from his
happiness. On the contrary, idea porters are
permanently in the fire, being used as a fire
tongs by those who do not wish to hold the
fire by their hands.

WISE NUTRITION
Today, wise nutrition has become vital
and ever more important in one’s daily life
given that the most determining factor of
one’s supremacy at the present time is
wisdom without any other alternative. In
other words, wisdom and brain using capacity
will be the main criteria in determining the
prospective important people. Wise nutrition
means alimentation for wisdom. An
alimentation style pernicious to brain is one
of the worst harms that someone can cause
for himself. In addition, an understanding of
nutrition that gives priority to the health of
wisdom has got an important role in leading
humanity to the universal amity and peace.
Making “freedom” and “science”
operative together leads the understanding of
“sacred”. Being “sacred” in the literal sense
does not grow out from the sentimental
basis. Thereby, all scientific findings become
sacred when they wear the dress of freedom.
Wisdom is the only way to be followed by this
holy. In some practices, actions of bona fide
are confused with those based on wisdom.
Definitely, actions based on wisdom are the
actions of bona fide at the same time.
However, actions of bona fide are not always
based on wisdom necessarily. The wisdom
basis is usually ignored for actions started

63
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

only with good intentions, supposing the

presence of the latter sufficient. However, the
most surprising dangers and staggering
mistakes happen due to such bona fide
actions whose basis of wisdom is ignored.
The byword “to reap ingratitude” connotes
the negative events faced by the people who
act in good faith but ignore the basis of
wisdom for their actions. It is also probable
for someone to become a disingenuous
person because of his attitudes based on only
good intentions but destitute of common
sense. If such a person considered the issue
by wisdom, he would see the difference
between his thoughts and his acts in reality.
When this person takes decisions related to
his future and goals, this lack of wisdom will
bring him some undesired surprises. There is
only one-way to the truth: it is wisdom. For
those who adopt truths and verities as a way
of life easily, “wisdom” must be protected
and effectuated. Outputs of wisdom purified
from prejudices are equal to divine
inspiration for human beings. As things
stand, wisdom must be protected.
Preserving the brain cells in which
wisdom habituated is one of the urgent
priorities to protect wisdom. Methods to
improve “the usage capacity” of the brain,
which could be considered as software

64
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

program for it, should be investigated and

put into practice by those who are interested
in the subject. However, implementing these
methods is not sufficient itself. In addition,
“the brain cells”, which could be considered
as hardware for brain, should be kept alive
and provided with adequate blood, energy,
and oxygen. In this case, the crown of
wisdom in the country of unlimited human
powers abrogates fake funs and joys that
conceal truths. Metaphorically, a kind of
dough whose flour is freedom, whose water
is science, and whose yeast is idea masters
the life. What emanates from this dough is
respect to rights and democracy based on
rule of law, and thus, universal amity and
peace. Among the organs of human being, is
the brain the counterpart of universal amity
and peace. In other words, the most
important task of the brain, which is a
natural wonder, is to develop methods for
universal amity and peace. Perhaps, this
excellent organ exists in order to supply the
want of the nature to universal amity and
peace. It would be an injustice for the natural
balance to waste the brain by using it for
gossiping in the daily life and deceiving
people. From this perspective, it is the
universal responsibility of human being to
protect wisdom and the brain where it
resides and to ensure the transfer of its

65
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

genius properties to posterity via genes. It is

only possible to rescue the ideas from the
darkness of the world of “suspicion-doubt-
prejudice” trio by a struggle under the
guidance of wisdom. The “suspicion-doubt-
prejudice” trio acts as the Inquisition against
wisdom and its outputs and impedes
domination of wisdom on life. That is, it does
not provide wisdom with what it deserves.
Not providing wisdom with what it deserves
means “to tyrannize over wisdom”. The one
who tyrannizes over wisdom is a wisdom
tyrant. Such argument as “this is my wisdom,
I can like it or tyrannize over it, and no one
can interfere in my affair” goes against to
spirit of the democracy. Any attitude in
compliance with the given argument can not
be accepted as a democratic right. Wisdoms
of all individuals and their outputs are
nutrients of democracy, which is the
administration based on wisdom. Wisdom of
each individual is the joint owner of collective
wisdom. As a result, it is one of the
important requirements of democracy not to
tyrannize over wisdom, provide wisdom with
what it deserves, and contribute to collective
wisdom.
In this context, such acts as not taking
nourishment in a protective manner for
wisdom and not caring possible harms on

66
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

wisdom would be a tyranny over wisdom. Not

taking nourishment in a protective manner
for wisdom strengthens the suspicion-doubt-
prejudice trio. To confuse the products of the
“suspicion-doubt-prejudice” trio with the
outputs of wisdom results in a state that is
hard to escape. This brings in an empire to
the tyrant over wisdom. Ensuring the
liveliness and permanence of democracy is
possible by making the outputs of real
wisdom master the life. Therefore, protection
of wisdom means the protection of future. In
fact, detrimental acts to wisdom are the
storming attacks that undo hopes for the
future and cut the vital point of these hopes.
Detrimental acts to wisdom are even the
main reasons that keep the world from being
a habitable physical place.
Human brain always produces abstract
thought and introduces the products of this
abstract thought to be used in practice.
People depend automatically on the products
of this abstract thought when forming their
decision, presenting their ideas, and
determining their goals. If the initial basis for
the abstract thought produced by someone’s
brain is “suspicion”, outputs of this will form
“doubts”. Consequently, the decisions taken
by this individual become the results of
“Suspicion – Abstract thought” in reality.

67
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

However, if someone’s brain depends initially

on wisdom when producing abstract thought,
this individual will develop some early
foresights that have a high probability of
being verified when the methods of wisdom
are used to asses them later. Doubtless to
say, the advantage of developing such early
foresights, with a high probability of being
verified by wisdom later, for someone’s
decisions and goals is great and significant.
Such kind of foresight is a product of
“Wisdom - Abstract thought”. Whereas
“Suspicion – Abstract thought” makes you
reach prejudices via doubts, “Wisdom -
Abstract thought” makes you develop
scientific foresights. While the latter brings in
“happiness”, the former results in “suffering”.
The amount of the human brain’s
“Wisdom - Abstract thought” outputs should
be more than its “Suspicion – Abstract
thought” products and the equilibrium
between the two groups should always be
unbalanced in favor of the former. One of the
precautions to be taken to ensure this is wise
nutrition; protection of wisdom while taking
nourishment, that is, alimentation for
wisdom. The brain where wisdom resides and
uses it as a factory of abstract thought
should be protected, its capacity should be
expanded, and the necessary blood, energy,

68
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

and oxygen for its cells should always be

supplied. Foods, drinks, and attitudes are
harmful brain cells should be avoided. Closely
related to the brain activities, the liver is also
an organ to be paid special attention. Caring
attitudes for the liver also result indirectly in
preserving the brain cells. The proverb in
Turkish “a sound mind exists in a healthy
body” (mens sana in corpore sana, in Latin)
explains partially what we mean here. The
phrase “a sound mind” here means a head
which has got a brain attaching importance
to wisdom basis. As a whole, this proverb
lays down the health of the body as a pre-
condition for mental health. Our ancestors
are surely right with this proverb. The way to
a healthy body is basically wise nutrition and
performing physical exercises.
When gradually poisoned by means of
food; people complain in their daily life about
weakness, joints ache, intestinal disorders,
feeling of fatigue upon getting up in the
morning, difficulty in remembering the
subjects and deficiency in memory, making
false decisions that do not seem suitable to
them later, sometimes experiencing reflex
disorders, looses in the unity of their cells
and early aging etc..
In addition, the influence of the
pollution in food may emerge in the forms

69
Happiness Management Yılmaz DÜNDAR

carcinogenic, teratogenic, metagenic and

allergenic effects. Of course, pollution in food
primarily affects children, the elderly and
patients more rapidly and effectively.
Furthermore, pollution in food is an issue that
needs tactful handling for pregnant women
and suckling mothers. Awaking people about
the feeding styles is much more important
than making related laws. Laws could show a
backfiring gun effect unless the necessary
consciousness is established in the society.
In today’s global world, the necessary
precautions to ensure the priority of the
following considerations over the ambition of
gaining more money should be included in
the agenda of the international platforms.
Such priorities are to aim at the universal
amity and peace; to contribute to the
attainment of this goal; and to be aware of
the locomotive role of wisdom in coping with
this task.
