The beam from a laser in Kingston, Jamaica is reflected from a plane mirror on a satellite.
The reflected beam is received in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Figure 2 illustrates this situation
diagrammatically. On the diagram draw the normal from the mirror to the Earths surface.

Describe an experiment to verify Snells law of refraction. State what apparatus you
would use, give a brief description of the method you would use and state how you
would arrive at your conclusion.

(b)
An optical device consists of two glass blocks of different indices of refraction, arranged
as shown in Figure 3. The refractive index from air to Medium 1 is 1.2. The refractive
index from Medium 1 to Medium 2 is 1.25.

angles 1234 and 5.
(ii) What is the velocity of light in Medium 1?

6. (a)
What are the TWO principal ideas of the Kinetic theory of matter? Describe the model
of each state of matter.

(b) (i) Calculate the amount of heat energy which must be added to 2.5kg of water at its boiling
point in order to evaporate it completely.
(Specific latent heat of vaporization of water = 2260000Jkg-1).

(ii) Explain why specific latent heat of vaporization is greater than the specific latent heat of
fusion using the kinetic theory of matter.

(c) (i) If steam in (b) (i) was captured in a closed container at 100 degrees Celsius and then
heated, the pressure in the container would be observed to increase. Use kinetic theory to
explain this.
