Rabbi’s Message

Passover Appeal
From the beloved musical “Fiddler on the Roof”. . . .

Nochum the Beggar: Alms for the poor, alms for the poor. . . .
A Villager: Here, Reb Nochum, here’s one kopek.
Nochum: One kopek? Last week you gave me two kopeks!
Villager: I had a bad week.
Nochum: So – if you had a bad week, why should I suffer?

A bit of comic relief in this delightful show, but also a glimpse into the Jewish mind.
Tzedakah – the pursuit of justice through charity – is the cornerstone of our exis-
tence as a people, in good times and in bad.

For our country, and indeed, for the global community, it has been more than just a bad week. The downturn
in our economy has affected virtually all of us in one way or another, both as individuals and in our affiliations
with various institutions, whether schools or universities, religious congregations or corporate enterprises. We
add our prayers to those of so many of our fellow Americans that the stimulus will help, even at this early and
precarious stage in the process.

All this raises an important question for us as Jews. If we are hurting financially ourselves, are we still obli-
gated to give tzedakah – charity? The response of our tradition would be unequivocally yes. Obviously, we
cannot give what we do not have. Our tradition has never encouraged us to give up ALL of our resources, and
vows of poverty are not part of mainstream Jewish practice. Nevertheless, if we do have the wherewithal to
continue contributing on some level to charitable causes, as is the responsibility of every Jew, then we cannot
afford to desist from it. On the contrary. Particularly at this time of need all around us, we have the responsi-
bility to do what we can to help those in need.

This is particularly true at this time of year as we begin to anticipate our celebration of the Passover holiday.
Though it’s pretty cold out as I write this message, the reality is that Passover is not far away at all, and many
of us already have begun to plan for our seders. Every year the New York Board of Rabbis and the Federation
Joint Passover Association conduct an Annual Passover Appeal to enable our fellow New Yorkers in need in
their celebration of this holiday. Funds from the Appeal go to the purchase of matzot and other types of Pass-
over food and supplies for literally thousands of our fellow Jews in the area, mostly elderly, indigent, alone or
institutionalized, who do not have the resources to provide for themselves.

Every year I have been overwhelmed at the kindness of our congregation in responding to this Annual Pass-
over Appeal. It is a privilege for me to participate with you in contributing to the efforts of the NYBR and
Federation in this mitzvah. Particularly during this stressful time, I now ask you once again to contribute to
this Appeal. Please make out a check for whatever amount is comfortable for you to “Union Temple of
Brooklyn,” and earmark it on the bottom “Passover Appeal.” Send it to the temple at 17 Eastern Park-
way, Brooklyn, NY 11238, and we will issue a collective check to those conducting the Appeal.

On behalf of my colleagues at the New York Board of Rabbis and our friends at Federation, I offer my heart-
felt thanks.

-Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman

Brotherhood
Partisans and Pirates
Our February meeting featured Joshua Waletzky showing and discussing his film Parti-
sans of Vilna. I’m happy to say that it was very well-attended. Both the film and the
question-and-answer session afterward provided a well-researched and fascinating look
at one of the best examples of organized Jewish resistance to the Nazis, as well as the
ways that other Vilna Jews living through the Holocaust coped and responded. We
thank Andy Mirer for making the arrangements for Partisans of Vilna.
The Brotherhood Shabbat service and luncheon will be on March 14th. Erez Mirer and I
will each be chanting part of the Torah reading, Ki Tissa (the Golden Calf). Watch for
my emails, and let me know what part you would like to have in the service. I hope that
you all can attend and participate, as it is always one of the most meaningful and enjoy-
able events in the Brotherhood’s year.
Our next Brotherhood book discussion, on April 26th, will be about Edward Kritzler’s new book Jewish Pi-
rates of the Caribbean. Look for the book, and come and hear about this amazing and little known part of our
history.

Appreciating the Trees
During the month of February at the height of the win-

for our annual Tu Bi’Shevat celebration with Rabbi
Goodman.
The Hummingbirds, our four year olds, made tree col-

Sammy the Spider's First Tu Bi'Shevat and A Tree Is
Nice. They discussed why it is important for the earth
to have trees and that water and sunlight are needed to
make trees grow. The children noted how trees
change throughout the seasons. They spoke about the
different fruits and nuts that grow on trees and how
squirrels like to gather nuts to help them through the
winter.
