T he skin is the larg est org an in the body with the capability to absorb everything . So how is it possible that our skin and personal care products continue to g o unreg ulated by the FDA? T he same ing redients that we use to clean and lubricate our cars, sinks and driveways should not be the same ing redients we smear on our bodies and take into our mouth. Pro pylene G lyc o l (PG ) & Butylene G lyc o l: Found in antifreez e. Acts as a "surfactant" (wetting ag ent and solvent). Penetrates skin and weakens protein and cellular structure. Strong enoug h to remove barnacles from boats. T he EPA considers PG so toxic that workers are required to wear protective clothing and to dispose of PG by burying it in the g round. PG penetrates the skin so quickly, the EPA warns ag ainst contact to prevent brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. But there

isn't even a warning label on products such as stick deodorants, where the concentration is g reater than in most industrial applications. 2. S o dium Lauryl S ulfate (S LS ) & S o dium Laureth S ulfate (S LES ): Deterg ents that pose serious health threats. Used in g arag e floor cleaners and eng ine deg reasers - and in 90% of personal care products that foam. Animals exposed to SLS experience eye damag e, depression, labored breathing , diarrhea, severe skin irritation, and even death. Young eyes may not develop properly if exposed to SLS. May damag e the skin's immune system. Can be transformed into nitrosamines, a potent class of carcinog ens. Your body may retain the SLS for up to five days and maintain residual levels in the heart, liver, lung s, and brain. 3. DEA (diethano lamine), MEA (mo no ethano laniine) & T EA (triethano lamine) : Hormone

disrupting chemicals that can form cancer-causing nitrates. Restricted in Europe due to carcinog enic effects, yet they are still used in the USA. Americans may be exposed 10-20 times per day with shampoos, shaving creams and bubble baths. Dr. Samuel Epstein, Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Illinois, says that repeated applications of DEA-based deterg ents result in a major increase in liver and kidney cancer. T he PDA's John Baily says: "T he risk is sig nificantly increased for children." 4. S o dium Hydro xide: T he most recent addition to our personal care products. Found in crystal drain cleaners. Drano is 100% sodium hydroxide. T his is a poison (caustic lye), yet a primary ing redient in adult and children's toothpaste and cleansers. Especially extra-whitening toothpastes. 5. Tric lo s an: Synthetic "anti-bacterial" with a chemical structure similar to Ag ent O rang e. T he EPA reg isters it as a pesticide, g iving it hig hest scores as a risk to human health and the environment. It may produce dioxin, a hormone disrupting chemical with toxic effects measured in the parts per trillion; that is only one drop in 300 O lympic-siz e swimming pools! Hormone disruptors pose enormous long term chronic health risks. It can chang e g enetic material, decrease fertility and sexual function, and foster birth defects. Stored in body fat, it can accumulate to toxic levels, damag ing the liver, kidneys, and lung s. It can also cause paralysis, brain hemorrhag es and heart problems. Tufts University School of Medicine says triclosan can force the emerg ence of "super bug s" that we cannot kill. Its widespread use in antibacterial cleansers, toothpastes and household products may have nig htmarish implications on future g enerations. 6. DMDM & Urea (Imidazo lidinyl): Two of many preservatives that often release formaldehyde which cause joint pain, skin reactions, allerg ies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatig ue, diz z iness, and loss of sleep. include weakening the immune system and cancer. 7. Po lyethylene G lyc o l (PEG ): Carcinog enic petroleum ing redient that reduces the skin's natural moisture. Increases the appearance of ag ing and leaves you vulnerable to bacteria. Used in sprayon oven cleaners and cleansers to dissolve oil and g rease. 8. Parabens any parabens : Look for anything with the word paraben in it. Used primarily as a preservative. It's a strong hormone disrupting chemical. Has direct links to breast cancer and heart problems. 9. Alc o ho l, Is o pro pyl (S D-4 0 ): Drying , irritating solvent that strips skin's moisture and immune barrier, making you vulnerable to bacteria and viruses. Made from a petroleum derivative found in shellac and antifreez e as well as personal care products. Promotes brown spots and premature ag ing . A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ing redients says it may cause headaches, flushing , diz z iness, mental depression, nausea, vomiting , and coma. Fatal ing ested dose is one ounce or less. 10. Mineral Oil: Petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic wrap, clog g ing the pores. Interferes with skin's ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders. Slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature ag ing . Baby oil is 100% mineral oil! 11. FD&C Co lo r Pig ments : Synthetic colors from coal tar that deposits toxins onto the skin, causing skin irritation. Absorption of certain colors can cause depletion of oxyg en in the body and death. Animal studies have shown almost all of them to be carcinog enic. 12. Frag ranc es : Too bad so many feel a need to leave a ling ering odor behind. Frag rances may contain up to 4000 ing redients (including different animal urines for streng th), many of them toxic or carcinog enic. Frag rances cause headaches, diz z iness, allerg ic rashes, skin discoloration, violent coug hing , vomiting and skin irritations.
