shaped by it. Just like the Internet anyone, anywhere,

at any time can (and does) contribute to the collective
consciousness. In a two-way effect, you shape it
through your individual contributions to it and you are
simultaneously conditioned by it.
The vast storehouse of information from the
collective consciousness is available to you through
intuitive awareness. Just as everyone has eyes to see, we
are all intuitive. Intuition is not something you are born
with or without, nor is it a special gift. It is available
to us all. In fact, it is a relatively common capacity that
can be enhanced with a little focused awareness and
practice. The only difference between an intuitive
and non-intuitive person is the two have used their
consciousness differently. In other words, they have
paid attention to different channels of experience.
Intuitive consciousness affords powerful guidance
in life. It may take the form of a subtle but pervasive
sensibility about something. It may also take the form
of sudden insights, epiphanies, and aha experiences
in which something that previously evaded your
awareness suddenly becomes clear and accessible.
Intuitive consciousness gives you a broad perspective,
the ability to see the bigger picture, to see behind things.
It opens a window into the collective consciousness.
The Unifying Field
We have access to the collective consciousness
any time and we also contribute to it. This two-way
process has universal effects. What you contribute to the
collectivity determines not only your future experiences
but those of others as well. We are all connected. Evidence
of this underlying unity is found in technologies of
consciousness, practices in which trained meditators
tune in to the unifed feld of consciousness and work
with it in intentional ways. These techniques have been
successfully implemented to reduce war, terrorism, and
social confict. They have been shown to turn off violence
in the Middle East and reduce crime in forty-eight cities,
including a 25% drop in violent crime in Washington,
D.C.
3
Consciousness is a unifed feld constantly
uploading, reconfguring, and downloading information
that affects us all; we are all connected.
Unity is not just a fowery feel-good idea; it is a fact.
Atomsthe building blocks that support lifeare not
made of material substance as was previously thought.
Therefore neither are we. Despite outward appearances
of separateness, we are all one, interconnected within a
vast energy matrix. In 1964 Irish physicist John Stewart
Bell devised a mathematical theorem that is often
referred to as the most profound in all of science. Bell
proved reality is nonlocal, or non-separable. His theorem
is remarkable because it is not a theory or speculation,
it is a mathematical proof that explains reality itself,
not appearances or perceptions of reality. Bells proof
has been experimentally verifed and shows there is a
profound holistic interconnectedness that permeates all
of existence. The dominant concept of reality as separate
objects and individuals is just not accurate.
Unity is the true nature of reality. We simply are
not conscious of it; therefore it is not actualized. It
exists as potential. The actualization of unity happens
through the expansion of consciousness, as the very
substance of life does not fully take form until it interacts
with consciousness. At the subatomic level, matter only
exists as potentials or tendencies until it encounters
consciousness. Reality is literally cocreated by us
through what we observe, what we pay attention to.
When we infuse something with consciousness, it
transforms. The expansion of individual consciousness
continues. Unity is actualized through the recognition
of essential wholeness.
Unity consciousness gives you the lived experience
of oneness, or what has been described as Beingness
itself. At the level of unity you do not merely observe a
fower in its pure form, you become one with the fower.
You do not so much see a blade of grass, you are the
blade of grass, along with everything and everyone M

he expansion of consciousness often
appears as a personal quest. We talk of
the unconscious and subconscious
mind as we strive to transcend the ego
and awaken more. But its important
to keep in mind that consciousness is
collective. It is much more than an individual state of
mind. Consciousness is a dynamic feld of all awareness.
Everyone contributes to and draws from the composite
collectivity of consciousness. As a pervasive energy, it is
not confned to any particular individual or any one place.
There is a growing body of research that
substantiates this. Take, for example, the pupillary
response, the involuntary response of your eye pupils to
dilate or contract when exposed to positive or negative
stimuli. Recent research on consciousness shows that
your pupils will respond in the exact same manner
even when the positive and negative stimuli are hidden
from the eye. Although the images are not visible your
pupils still respond accordingly, as though the images
were in plain sight.
1
Clearly your system is tapping into
something beyond the physical realm, beyond your
ordinary senses. Similar fndings are evident with the
human heart, which has been shown to consistently
and appropriately respond to randomly generated
positive or negative images even before you are exposed
to them.
2
The collective consciousness appears to be an
ultra-high frequency energy/information structure that
we are tuned into. It exists as a universal feld that we
simultaneously contribute to and are conditioned by.
The Web of Consciousness
The World Wide Web, and the Internet that supports
it, are helpful in illustrating how this might work. Like
consciousness, the Net itself does not exist in material
form. It consists of bits and bytes (binary digits) of
information. Like consciousness, the Internet is not
confned to one location. It is pervasive. Sitting in front
of my computer one typical day while paying bills,
ordering gifts, exchanging emails, surfng the Web, and
registering to vote, it occurred to me how dependent
on the Internet I had become. I wondered how I would
function, not to mention the rest of the industrialized
world, if the Net went down for any length of time. So I
asked a computer engineer about the probability of this
happening. He said it would be impossible because the
Internet does not exist in any specifc location. Rather, it
consists of countless servers positioned throughout the
planet. If a server goes down in one location there are
enough others still functioning to sustain the Net.
In similar fashion, everyone is constantly
contributing to consciousness. It does not exist in
any one location but is omnipresent. It is dynamic,
pervasive, and ever expanding. There is no end to it.
Like an enormous Internet, the consciousness web
is limitless. The Internet is comprised of individual
information streams from all over the world. People
are continually accessing it, contributing to it, drawing
from it. It represents a singular, yet collective effort.
Individuals shape the content of the Net through
their personal contributions to it and, in turn, are

because we comprehend the interconnectedness of
all and act from that state of mind. Consciousness is
the great synthesizing force that derives unity out of
fragmentation and propels us forward in this direction.
Our individual thoughts, feelings, actions and
awareness directly impact others via the unifed feld of
consciousness. We are, therefore, called upon to make
choices accordingly: to make every action a conscious
action; every feeling a conscious feeling; every thought
a conscious thought. We are called upon to use free will
to choose unity, and be responsible for our participation
in the essential oneness, to live in such a way that
we actualize unity consciousness within. This is our
birthright and our destiny.

else. You do not see the other person you are that
person. That tree. The planet. The galaxy. The universe.
Unity prevails. It becomes evident that consciousness
and love are essentially one and the same.
To echo the words of former Czech President Vaclav
Havel, the problems in the world were not created out in
the world, they are problems of the mind. Lets say you
wake up tomorrow morning and somehow everything
is transformedno more war, pollution, poverty,
racism, oppression, sexism, or persecutionno more
problems of any kind. In a very short time they would all
come back because the problems are not out there in the
world; they are inside each of us. They are problems of
consciousness. If it shows up out in the world, it already
exists inside of us, in our consciousness. Good, in this
light, is anything that takes us in the direction of unity, of
essential wholeness and profound interconnection.
The Illusion of Separation
We have all had glimpses of unity consciousness
and are therefore capable of accessing this state of mind.
So, why not do this on an ongoing basis? Why dont
we abide in the awareness of our interconnectedness
at all times? Why do we feel so isolated and alone
sometimes? Why do we act in ways that are harmful
to each other when in reality we are all one? We are all
individual waves moving in an ocean of consciousness.
But we get caught up in our individuated forms and
forget what we really are. We identify with being the
wave instead of being the ocean. We believe we are
separate but we are not. Consciousness compels us to
bring unity to all aspects of life, to use our will to unify
