Name: Sarah Berman Grade 3 Lesson Title: Poetry Unit: Acrostic Poem Objectives: Students will know how

to write an Acrostic Poem. Students will be able to use their background knowledge of the planets to help write this poem. Students will identify true facts about their chosen planet. Students will be able to publish a final draft of one planet Acrostic poem Standards: Materials Needed: Acrostic Planet Graphic Organizer: Writing notebook Pencil Planet Fact Book Lesson Time: 45 minutes. Provide Objectives: Now that we have been talking about planets all week it is time to turn our knowledge into poetry power. We are going to be using what we know about the solar system to come up with Acrostic poems for all of the planets! Now what do I mean when I say Acrostic poem? If you think back to the beginning of the year you all made an acrostic poem about your name(hear student responses for meaning of Acrostic poem). We are going to work together to make an acrostic poem together! At the very end after we have written all of our poems describing the planets I want you to choose your favorite and we are going to copy that nice and neatly onto final draft paper. Why you might ask!? This is our first piece we will put in our Perfect Pieces of Poetry Packet! Demonstrate knowledge/skill: Before I pass out our graphic organizers, we are going to work together to come up with a planet acrostic poem together. I am going to start off by choosing the Planet Neptune! The first thing we need to do is write the word Neptune. Luckily, our graphic organizer has provided us with the spelling and enough space and lines so we dont even have to do this ourselves! A major perk of this is that we will have all the planets spelled correctly on our final drafts! So first we need to think of what we know about NeptuneWho can help me with some facts about Neptune? (Hear some student responses) How will this information help me write my Acrostic poem? I am going to start writing my poem. I am going to do the first two letters N E and P then I will ask for you help! For N when I think of Neptune I am NOT going to just write Neptune againthat would not be helpful to our readers to learn more about the planet! For N when I think about how icy and cold and gassy Neptune that does NOT sound like a place I want to live. I am going to write never a place astronauts will visit. Next we have the U. Hmm when I think about Neptune I am also thinking about the planets that surround it. For u I am going to say Uranus is the planet that comes right before me.

What do I mean by me? Am I saying that Neptune comes before myself Ms. Berman in the solar system!? NO! Of course not! I am just speaking for the planet! We are on the letter PWhen I think of Neptune I know that there are clouds of poisonous gas surrounding Neptune. I am going to write Poisonous gas clouds surround me. Guided Practice: Now I need your help to continue writing this poem! We are on the letter T. what could we write to help us describe Neptune. U. N. E. (use prompting or scaffolding when necessary) Turn to the person sitting closest to you! You will be working together to come up with a poem for Mercury! Make sure you work together to think of details to help describe the planet! When you are finished raise your hand and I will come check it out! Independent Practice: Now it is time to work on your own! Taking what you know from our planets, take out your planet fact books and use that information to help you write an acrostic poem for a planet! You can choose ANY planet you would like to write your first acrostic poem. Remember to write nice and neatly! This will go in your perfect pack of poems book!! When you are finished come to me and I will check it and give you a final draft paper. This will be the copy we use in our PPP book. Assessment: Name: Meets All facts about planet are true.
