Kimberly Keyworth English 478 - 15 Minute Lesson Plan

TOPIC: Capital Letters

AUDIENCE: Kindergarden & 1st grade students LEARNING GOALS: Be able to identify and understand when to use capital letters/BIG letters. HOW TO ACHIEVE LEARNING GOALS: a. ASSESS: Take a quick assessment of students knowledge (using Classroom Assessment Technique #1) on the topics we will be building upon to understand Capital Letters. This exercise is relevant to all grades, one of the few if not only that would work with such young children. b. REFRESH: Begin with a mini-lesson to refresh students memory on basic nouns (naming words) and ability to identify the beginning and end of a sentence. These are the topics students must understand to be able to appropriately use Capital Letters. c. LEARN: Teach students how to identify a capital letter as well as why and when to use it. d. APPLY: Finally identify and practice when to use capital letters by identifying the beginning and end of a sentence as well as proper nouns. e. GO BEYOND: Push learning forward by having students record how capital letters are used in their favorite book. HOW I DETERMINED THE CONTENT OF MY LESSON PLAN: I used the English Language Arts Common Core Aligned Assessments for First Grade (as my topic is a bit advanced for kindergarden). 1. LAYOUT OF DAY: Classroom Assessment Technique - Background Knowledge Probe on identifying Nouns SIDE #1: Pass out index cards to all students and have them identify the nouns, naming words, up on the screen. Nouns & verbs will be written on side #1 of the card. Students will have to circle only the nouns and leave the verbs alone. Screen will aid students with images. SIDE #2: Have students circle only the proper nouns, naming words that identify a specific person/place/thing. Common & proper nouns will be displayed on their card. This will identify if students know the difference between a verb & a noun as well as if they can tell the difference between a common and proper noun. Then I will know what to review in the following days.

1. REVIEW NOUNS (I.L.1b): nouns are naming words, they tell us what an item is ex. table, chair, classroom, teacher, Ms. Christa VIDEO ON NOUNS: English Grammar - Nouns for kids - YouTube 2.
