TECH I SEMESTER REGULAR EXAMINATIONS MARCH 2010 Analysis of Power Electronic Converters (EEE Common to PE, PEED and PID) Time: 3 Hours Max Marks: 60 Answer Any FIVE Questions All Questions Carry EQUAL marks 1. a) What is the nature of power factor and its variation with firing angle, when a 1voltage controller feeds a resistive load? b) How does the load inductance affect the conduction angle of a controller? 2. a) A 3-star connected balanced resistances are supplied from a 3-AC voltage controller. Derive the expression for R.M.S value of load current in the complete range of firing angles. Draw the waveforms of load current. b) Discuss the various steps in determining the output voltage waveforms of bidirectional 3-controller.

3. a) Explain the operation of 1-half controlled converter for continuous and discontinuous load currents. b) How is the output voltage of a sinusoidal PWM control converter varied? Discuss in detail.

4. a) With the help of circuit diagram and waveforms explain the operation of 3fully controlled converter feeding R-L load. Derive the expression for average load voltage. b) For the above circuit, derive the expressions for Input power factor and Harmonic factor. 5. a) Discuss and analyze the need for power factor correction/improvement in

converters. b) Discuss the operation of 3-Boost PFC converter.

6. a) Explain briefly the various modulation techniques employed in 1- PWM inverters. b) Discuss the trapezoidal and stair case modulation techniques for performance improvement of 1-inverter.

7. a) Compare 180 and 120 conduction modes of operation of 3-inverter. b) Explain various space vector modulation techniques employed for 3-inverter.

8. a) What is a multilevel inverter? Discuss the basic concept and features of multilevel inverter. b) List out the advantages and disadvantages of flying capacitor multilevel inverter.
