Course Descriptions
MFG 171: Introduction to Lean Manufacturing (3.0 credits)
This course covers DMAIC problem-solving methodology Identifying the 8 Wastes and how to eliminate them Distinguishing between value-added and non-value-added activities Understanding the voice of the customer Value stream mapping Kaizen events within the manufacturing environment Quick changeover Starting the 5S process Cellular design and Kanban Analyzing process-related data to drive improvement Continuous and sustained improvement Total productive maintenance

MFG 271: Advanced Lean Manufacturing (3.0 credits)


Through this intensive, project-based course, students identify workplace needs and objectives, develop detailed plans for process improvement, determine appropriate strategies from the lean toolset, implement tools and document results, conduct a Kaizen event, facilitate team dynamics, gain presentation and leadership skills, maintain workplace health and safety, and demonstrate the principles of lean beyond the production floor. Students who successfully complete both courses will have earned a Certificate in Lean Manufacturing in addition to 6.0 credits.

MFG 172: Supply Chain Management I: (3.0 credits)


Students will learn the basic principles of supply chain management (SCM) and demonstrate its application in real-world situations; understand supplier and customer roles and responsibilities, evaluations and metrics, and quality control; and determine a value system by identifying steps required to create value, mapping the value system, and challenging every step.

MFG 272: Supply Chain Management II: (3.0 credits)


Students who complete this course will be able to calculate total cost of ownership for material purchases understand and document customer expectations develop supplier measurement systems and accountability processes break down cross-functional barriers for effective supply chain collaboration implement pull systems to drive material replenishment take increased delivery frequency, lot size reduction and level flow from theory to practice use lean tools to establish supply chain visibility complete a work-based project with tangible benefits and measurable outcomes Students who successfully complete both courses will have earned a Certificate in Supply Chain Management in addition to 6.0 credits. _________________________________________________________________________________________________
