ntegrally colored concrete? Dont expect a burst of enthusiasm when you ask your ready mixed concrete producer to supply it. His phone will probably ring first if the results arent as expected. But steps can be taken by the contractor, concrete producer, and color supplier to help ensure that attractive and uniform results are obtained with integral color. Concrete thats colored all the way through can be used in walls as well as flatwork. The color cant wear off. And exposed aggregate or deepbroomed finishes are possible because the concrete is colored throughout. Either raw pigments or pigments combined with other admixtures can be used to give integral color. The coloring materials can be purchased in bulk quantities (50-pound bags are commonly used) or in premeasured sizes to make batching easier. For instance, a 9-pound package of pigment might be added for each bag of cement used in a batch. If a less intense color were desired, a smaller sized package could be used. Liquid color systems have also been developed. Pigments are supplied in a liquid suspension which makes batching easier, especially on windy days.
To get good results with integrally colored concrete, pay particular attention to the following details.
Mix design
Use a minimum cement content of 470 pounds per cubic yard (a 5bag mix). Aim for the lowest slump that can still be placed and finished readily and dont exceed a 5-inch slump. Adding extra water to increase slump may cause excessive bleeding and nonuniformity in color. Avoid using any admixtures that contain calcium chloride. Calcium chloride may cause salt deposits to form on the concrete surface and discolor it. For air-entrained concrete subjected to freezing and thawing, be aware that some coloring agents such as carbon black will reduce air content. The amount of airentraining admixture may have to be increased to keep the air content at desired levels. For large projects, make a mockup wall panel or slab that requires at least 3 cubic yards of concrete. Use the same cement brand, aggregate type, and construction methods that will be used on the job. If necessary, make adjust-
ments in the amount of color added before the project gets under way. Special color blends to match existing structures or specific color needs are available in batch-size packages.
ations in color. Dont change cement brands in the middle of a job. Cements from different sources are different shades of gray. Changes in cement color cause changes in the concrete color. Watch slump particularly closely during batching. Slump va ri ations often indicate that water content has changed, perhaps because of cleanout water left in the truck or changes in the aggregate surface moisture content. Changes in water content also cause color variations. Consider the possibility of using liquid color systems. Liquid colors are easier and faster to batch and provide easier storage and handling. They also disperse throughout the concrete faster.

Make sure that any steel, whether rebar or snap ties, has at least 112 inches of concrete cover to prevent stains caused by corrosion.
