11.2 Bluetooth Technology The Bluetooth technology has become popular to implement Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN).

WLAN setup provides more benefits than wired LAN by avoiding the cost of installing LAN cabling and makes simple relocation whenever a networks structure has to be changed. The Denmark king Herald had nickname Blueooth. He united Denmark and Norway regions. Since this technology combines both personal communication and communication devices it was named, after the king as Bluetooth technology.

Protocol Stack of Bluetooth In Bluetooth the protocol stack enables communication with many devices. It includes voice data and control signaling in Bluetooth shown in fig 11.1. Radio modem is specified by RF layer. The link control at packet and bit levels are specified by the baseband layer. The Links Management Protocol (LMP) is capable of configuring links with other devices. It provides power modes, traffic scheduling, packet format, authentication and encryption. With Logical link control and adaptation protocol (L2CAP) connection-oriented and connectionless data services to that of the upper layers protocol. It may include services like segmentation, reassembly protocol multiplexing and also group abstractions for the data packets. The control information can be exchanged. The Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) enables two or more Bluetooth devices to support a particular service. The Telephone Control Protocol (TelCP) is used to define the call control.

Terminologies Radio : It specifies details of wireless support that includes i) Frequency ii) Use of frequency hopping iii) Modulation scheme iv) Transmit power Baseband : It is concerned with connection establishment and other task like, packet format, timings etc. Link manager protocol (LMP) It is responsible for link setup between the Bluetooth devices. It also includes some security issue like 1.Authentication and security issues 2.Negotiation and control of baseband packet sizes. Logical link control and adaptation protocol (L2CAP) It enables linking the baseband layer to upper-layer protocols. This L2CAP can provide i) Connectionless services and ii) Connection-oriented services. Services discovery protocol (SDP) It can supervise and enable connection between two or more Bluetooth devices for specific service application.SDP includes information such as i) Device information ii) Services iii) Service characteristics. Radio Frequency Communication(RFCOMM) : It is a cable replacement protocol used in Bluetooth specification. RFCOMM represents a virtual serial post designed so as to replace cable technologies. With minimum changes in existing devices RFCOMM replaces serial port cables and provides data transport in Bluetooth. TelCP : Bluetooth also specifies telephony control protocol. If defines mobility management functions so that groups of telephony control specification(TCS) devices can be handled. TCS a bit-oriented protocol that defines call control signaling. It helps to establish speech and data calls between the bluetooth devices.
