PARSHA MATH

Moshe’s name is “missing” from the Parsha of Tetzaveh. However, Moshe is not
“missing” since all the active verbs in the Parsha are in the second person (you), referring to Moshe.
Thus, the essence of Moshe is in the Parsha, just not the “lower” level represented by his name.

One of the allusions of this concept is the math in this Parsha. The Medrash tells us that G-d
traveled 500 years in order to acquire a name. Thus, the essence of G-d, which is greater than His
Name, must be more than 500. Everything has a foundation (‫ )מקור‬which is the equivalent of the
number one. Therefore, 501 is not just one more than 500, but the additional one is a unique group
representing at least equality to the previous set of 500. Similarly we find that in the times of the
Talmud the normal custom was to study a section 100 times. Someone who studies it 101 times was
not just adding an additional study unit, but went beyond the norm and was considered unique.

‫ תצוה‬has a numerical value of 501. Moshe’s essence (the group of one above 500) is reflected in
this Parsha, even though his name (lower level) is not in the Parsha.

Below is a list of concepts. Mark next to each item which represents 500, and which represent 100.
(Note that some are neither)

Age of Noach when he became a father

Age of Avrohom when he became a father

The nighttime of G-d’s day (1/2 of the entire amount)

Minimum number of blessings one should say each day

Number of prayers by Moshe (Parshas V’eschanan)

Penalty of silver coins for doing act of Motzei Shem Ra (type of slander)

Yitzchak’s age at the first marriage of Eisav

Years of harsh servitude of the Jews in Egypt

Area of the Mishkan in amos

Number of silver sockets (‫ )אדונים‬in the Mishkan

Age of Avram at time of his Bris Milah

Two (times) ‫נר‬

Bonus question:
‫ מיכא"ל‬is the siman for the number of verses in Parshas Tetzaveh
How is this connected to the concept of Moshe’s name not being mentioned in the Parsha?
