COURSE DESCRIPTION
The goal of Career Exploration is to prepare you for life beyond high school, either in the working world or in college. This course will provide you the opportunity to prepare workplace and/or college documents that you can easily use when you begin applying for jobs or colleges. Furthermore, most of the documents that you will create for this course will coincide with the portfolio you must complete for your senior project. Preparing you for the real world is the main objective of this course. It will also help guide you in understanding what is expected of you in the workplace/college environment, allow you to explore your future options, and also encourage you to expand your horizons when considering your futures. This course will require that integrate technology into all of your assignments -- much like the working and higher education environments will have you do. You will use several Web 2.0 tools that will expand your horizons of technology, but also serve to teach you certain objectives and tools that will be useful in the feature. Career Exploration is a five credit, 80-hour course. You can expect to work 8-10 hours on this course a week in order to complete it one quarter. The work will include:

Reading and reviewing course materials and examples Completing a portfolio of assignments o Resume o Cover Letter o Requesting a Letter of Recommendation o Thank You Letter o One Year Goals o Five Year Goals Sharing and reflecting with other class participation in discussion forums Peer feedback on various assignments through Google Docs Google Presentation on career of your choice Presentation of portfolio and presentation to peers, teachers, counselor and/or principal

OBJECTIVES & STANDARDS


Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

create a resume, cover letter, a request for a letter of recommendation, thank you letter, one year goals, and five year goals. have the documents to apply for work or college environments demonstrate public speaking skills demonstrate Google Doc and other Web 2.0 tools collaborate with peers through the use of Web 2.0 tools demonstrate Web 2.0 tool abilities to apply in the real-world

The California Content Standards that will be addressed are: 4.0 Technology - Students know how to use contemporary and emerging technological resources in diverse and changing personal, community, and workplace environments: 4.6 Differentiate among, select, and apply appropriate tools and technology. 2.2 Writing 2.5 Write job applications and rsums: d. Follow the conventional style for that type of document (e.g., rsum, memorandum) and use page formats, fonts, and spacing that contribute to the readability and impact of the document. 2.6 Deliver multimedia presentations: a. Combine text, images, and sound and draw information from many sources (e.g., television broadcasts, videos, films, newspapers, magazines, CD-ROMs, the Internet, electronic mediagenerated images).

PREREQUISITE CHARACTERISTICS & SKILLS


Career Exploration students should possess the following prerequisite characteristics and skills:

Junior or senior credits Self disciplined Average to advanced computer skills

Email is generally the best way to reach me. I check my email regularly throughout the day and will respond within 24 hours. Please write "Career Exploration - (Insert your name)" in the subject of your email to help me prioritize responses for this class.

If you have a question about an assignment, it is likely that many other students will have the same question - please post your question in either the Q & A Forum (for course questions) or in the discussion board for the particular assignment. Because we are all learners together, please feel free to respond to your classmates' questions if you know the answer or have suggestions!

COURSE STRUCTURE
This course will be delivered entirely online through the use of Edmodo and Google Docs. In Google Drive, you will access templates and examples of all assignments. You will also share all work completed with me on Google Drive for feedback. You will submit all final assignments and find links to various guides/videos/etc on Edmodo. Edmodo will also allow you to check your grades, monitor the class calendar, and interact with your peers.

TEXTBOOK & COURSE MATERIALS


There is no required print textbook for this course. Everything you need will be available online. If you do not have computer access at home, computers with Internet access will be available in the classroom during scheduled times.

Required:

Free online accounts for Google, YouTube and other Web 2.0 tools that emerge in the course. Current web browser with appropriate plugins: Flash Player Adobe PDF Reader

COURSE SUPPORT

If you still cant get your question answered, please email me and I will get back to you within 24 hours (excluding weekends).

GRADING
All assignments for this course will be graded as Pass/Fail. In order to pass the class, you must earn a passing grade on all assignments. All your grades will be posted in Edmodo under the Progress tab. Please monitor your grades and feel free to ask me with any questions.

ACADEMIC HONESTY
Academic honesty is critical to both your learning and the earning of any grades/credit for this course. Although many examples are shared with you, all assignments are expected to be original. When using an image, video, or text from somewhere else, proper citation must be used. Any plagiarism will result in no credit.

Draft, revise, and finalize drafts of One Year Goals and Five Year Goals using Google Docs Create a project using a Web 2.0 tool that connects to your One Year & Five Year Goals

Week 5: Planning for College Learning Objectives: This week, you will:

Complete a FAFSA application Complete scholarship applications Draft, revise, and finalize the WAWS Scholarship Essay and the Dollars for Scholars Essay in Google Docs
