Government Sets New Rules For Wireless Sector

The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry, Thursday announced new measures that the Government is taking to increase competition in the wireless sector, providing Canadians with more choices and access to the latest technology at better prices. A series of initiatives it says will help smartphone users get cheaper, faster service though it will take time and there will likely be lots of arguing about those rules among industry players like Rogers, Bell, Quebecor, Shaw and Telus. "Canadian families work hard for their money, and our government wants them to keep more of it," said Minister Paradis. "Through better use of existing cellphone towers and by taking action to promote at least four wireless providers in every region of the country, our government is making it possible for all Canadians to have access to world-class wireless service they can afford, no matter where they live." Paradis said the three measures he said will increase competition and, in so doing, help consumers. Expanding and extending rules requiring wireless companies to provide roaming on their networks to their competitors. Forcing wireless companies to share cellphone towers, a change that could reduce tower construction while ensuring national coverage. Setting out the rules for what will likely be a multibillion-dollar auction of new radio frequency spectrum space so that wireless providers can provide faster high-speed services. Our governments priority is to

provide greater wireless coverage at lower rates for consumers, Paradis said. The changes, though, will take some time. Companies that want to bid for new wireless spectrum, for example, cant start submitting their bids until Nov. 19 and the government cannot say when that auction will close. And once the winners are announced it could take weeks or months before new services are made available using that new spectrum. One of the reasons it will take a long time is because Industry Canada and the countrys major wireless providers have to sort out some complicated rules to conduct the radio frequency

spectrum auction. The wireless industry is divided on a lot of those issues. The big national players, such as Rogers, Bell and Telus, are often at odds with smaller regional players like Quebecor (the owner of QMI Agency and Sun Media), SaskTel, and Shaw Communications. The government is trying to walk a tricky line by setting rules that allow regional players and new service providers to compete with the big national players but avoid being seen as interfering too much in the marketplace. I firmly believe the basis of a strong economy is a competitive marketplace and consumer choice, Paradis said. The stakes are huge, both for the service

providers and for the government. An auction of wireless radio frequency spectrum in 2008 netted the government a whopping $4.3 billion. Industry Canada officials wont put a number on how much this auction will put into the governments piggy bank. The bidding, for all the available new spectrum space, starts at about $900 million. And while there is less spectrum or space in this auction, the radio frequencies being sold this time are relatively more valuable because more data can be carried with a smaller slice of the available radio frequencies. There are also many more industry players who might want to bid this time around than there were in 2008.

Amnesty Urges Fiji Regime To Investigate 'Torture' Video

Amnesty International called on Fiji's military regime to launch an urgent investigation Tuesday into an online video that appears to show two men being tortured by officials. The graphic footage posted on YouTube shows one man being savagely beaten with batons and metal bars, and another being set upon by a dog as the animal's handler encourages it. Amnesty said it was attempting to verify claims the video was taken last September and shows escaped convicts being mistreated after being recaptured by the military, which has ruled the Pacific nation since a 2006 coup. The human rights watchdog said that regardless of who the men were, their treatment amounted to torture and Fiji's military leader Voreqe Bainimarama needed to order an independent inquiry urgently. "Now is the time for Commodore Bainimarama to come out and absolutely condemn the use of torture in Fiji and to launch an investigation," Amnesty International New Zealand executive director Grant Bayldon said. "Amnesty International considers the sort of abuse that appears to be shown in this video to be torture." The nine-minute clip, which appears to have been shot with a mobile phone, shows a man being repeatedly struck with bars and batons while he lies in the back of a pick-up truck. Later in the video, a man hammers at the victim's ankle with the edge of a metal rod and he is shown stripped down to a T-shirt, with raised welts visible on his thighs and buttocks as he curls in a foetal position to protect himself. Another man is dragged around a field by a dog latched onto the collar of his bloodied shirt as his attackers laugh, then falls to his knees as he is punched in the head numerous times. Amnesty raised concerns late last year about the treatment of a group of five convicts who were recaptured after escaping from a prison in September. It said one of the prisoners was so badly beaten he had his right leg amputated below the knee after an open fracture became infected. Another prisoner was allegedly injured after being sexually assaulted with a rifle. Bayldon said some of the injuries depicted in the video were consistent with those suffered by the prisoners. "If this video is verified, it will be part of a long list of allegations of torture and beatings in Fiji," he said. "It takes place in a country in which Amnesty International has serious concerns about lack of freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and a lack of media freedom, where people are often afraid to speak out." Human rights groups have accused the Fiji military of carrying out the assaults on the men. Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, said a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident has been ordered. "We want to stress from the outset that no-one should prejudice this investigation by speculating on what happened. We need to formally establish the precise facts and we are determined to do so,'' the media reported him as saying. He said some of the international reporting on the incident was incorrect. "We know that the men who appear in this video are not prisoners who escaped from Naboro last year. We have already established this,'' he said. Mr Sokomuri said the procedure of investigation police would follow was similar to those followed when complaints had been lodged against police officers in other jurisdictions such as Australia, South Africa, USA and New Zealand. He said they were not prepared to speculate on the identities of those involved, so as not to prejudice the investigation. Human rights campaigner and lawyer Peter Williams QC, said New Zealand aid could be withheld from Fiji if no charges were brought against the perpetrators of the alleged torture and beatings. "I think we're waiting in New Zealand to see what the authorities are going to do about it. If no charges are brought then I think the New Zealand Government should bring some pressure on the dictatorship over there, the military government, to do something about it.'' The video showed "shocking brutality'', Mr Williams said. "The government over there, the police force, the military, they've got to do something about it otherwise the reputation of Fiji will go down like a piece of lead through water.'' Prime Minister John Key is expected to comment on the issue from South America. "While the video is still to be verified, what is clear is that torture is unacceptable under any circumstances and those responsible must be brought to justice.'' Mr Bayldon said the humiliation of the men, and their injuries, were "very serious". "Forced to undress and harassed by a dog, as men nearby laugh, it is difficult to watch. The subsequent brutal beating with batons is harrowing. It is torture.'' The video showed the beatings being administered by plain-clothed men speaking Bauan - a Fijian dialect.

Hindi Film Festival, 'Oscars Of India,' Overlooks Surrey

It may be home to tens of thousands of South Asian residents and be B.C.'s second-largest city, but Surrey was apparently left out of a Hindi film festival dubbed "the Oscars of India"until this week. Anita Huberman, CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade, said that organizers of the Times of India Film Awards began working to bring an event to the city of 483,000 residents only after the issue became public Wednesday. Huberman said it was frustrating also that her organization promoted the idea to the provincial government after it was conceptualized by the CanadaIndia Business Council. "I think the realization is that an event has to happen in Surrey. It needs to happen because 30 per cent of our population is South Asian," said Huberman by phone. "And so something is going to be happening, I'm still pushing for it, and I'm hoping that some type of announcement will happen soon, but time is against us." A festival spokesperson did not return a telephone call or email from The Canadian Press seeking comment. Festival puts focus on B.C., Vancouver The festival was announced by Premier Christy Clark at the end of January and is expected to bring Bollywood stars to B.C. and draw hundreds of millions of viewers from around the world between April 4 and April 6. A government media release stated festival-related events would take place around Metro Vancouver and would infuse $13 million to $18 million of direct spending into the economy. To help produce the event, the provincial government said it would provide $9.5 million in matching funding to the Times of India Group. The group is the largest media conglomerate in India and owns the world's largest English-language daily newspaper, drawing some eight million daily readers. "I don't know why Surrey wasn't part of the original program to begin with, but as I said we're pushing for it still," Huberman said. But Vivek Savkur, president of the Canada-India Business Council's regional office in B.C., is positive Surrey will be included in the festival, even though less than a month remains before it begins. "I don't think that should be a problem but we take a final decision on what's to be done on Monday," Savkur said. After all, he said he came up with the idea to bring the festival to B.C., and Surrey was always part of the plans, which now include events at BC Place, the Vancouver Convention Centre, and the Pacific National Exhibition. Savkur said organizers haven't been able to proceed with a Surrey event yet because there have been "issues" with theatres and venues. He said he has even met with the city's mayor a few months ago. "The majority of the South Asian ethic population is here in Surrey," he said, noting it would be "inappropriate" not to have a film event in the city.

THE continuous heavy rain in the West has affected land preparation and farming and this could result in a spike in vegetable and root crop prices as well as contribute to shortages over the next few months. "The rain and flooding of low-lying areas, especially where crops are being grown, are of concern but we can't do much," said Agriculture Ministry deputy secretary Uraia Waibuta. "The continuous rain has slowed down

land preparation considerably and this has affected farmers' ability to plant which will result in shortages over the next two and a half months. "Due to the adverse effect on crop production, the shortage of crop supply will drive prices up for at least the remainder of this month." Mr Waibuta said vegetable and root crop supply should normalise in three to four months' time. He urged vegetable and root crop

farmers to slow down production until the wet weather spell clears. "Our advice to these growers is to slow down until we go past this rainy period. "This is especially to farmers in Yaladro Flats in Tavua and other similar areas. "It is unfortunate that farmers continuously have to face the consequences of frequent floods but they can help themselves by slowing down production until things clear up."

Soldiers urged to be role models for Fijian people The Land Force Command Battalion (LFC Batt), in its first parade of the year was told that: Fiji needs the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. This message was relayed to the LFC Battalion by the RFMF chaplain, Major Joseva Tikoinatabua. Major Tikoinatabua said it was only proper for them to change their attitudes to meet the challenges. Fijis way forward, which has the full support of the RFMF, champions transparency, fairness and credibility says Major Tikoinatabua. He told the parade at Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Suva: These need a change in attitude and it will be easy for you if you improve your spiritual life. The RFMF chaplain reminded the LFC Battalion that they should be role models to members of the public when carrying out their duties. As you provide support for Governments way forward you have to accept the challenges that come your way, defeat the enemies, avoid the dangers and take opportunities. According to Major Tikoinatabua all these could be achieved with the right attitude. Addressing the parade the commanding officer (CO) LFC Batt, LieutenantColonel Amani Suliano, reiterated the message relayed to them by the RFMF Chaplain. Fiji, he said, needed the RFMF to steer its way through rough seas and have a fair and just election in 2014. Because of the many challenges

More Home Loans Written Off

Ten more Fijian families are now debt free homeowners after their home loan accounts were written off by Housing Authority this month. These families join the 236 families nationwide that have been assisted under the social housing policy since it was introduced 18 months ago. Housing Authority chief executive Alipate Naiorosui said the housing programme was targeted at homeowners who have paid over one and a half times the principal loan amount and are facing genuine financial difficulty. The families received an official letter indicating that their home loan account had been completely written off under the social housing policy that is being funded by a Government grant. Social housing policy The social housing policy is being funded under a $2.5 million Government grant to directly assist at risk homeowners who are no longer able to meet their mortgagee repayments. Once the home loan account has been written off the homeowner will not be eligible for further loans within 10 years. And upon transfer of shares or sale of the property, the assistance amount will need to be paid back in full.

Pastor Gets 9 Years For Rape

A former pastor of Emmanuel Christian Fellowship in Nabua who raped his 28-year-old church member has been sentenced to nine years imprisonment by the High Court. The man was facing one count of rape and one count of indecent assault. The court heard that in early January last year, the 28-year-old woman was having serious marital problems and had asked the former pastor if she could stay with them for some time. This is when the rape occurred. Judge Justice Paul Madigan said it was a breach of trust between a church pastor and his members. He also said that the public of Fiji are presently outraged at the ever increasing incidences of this crime and that women of all races and ages deserve the support of the judiciary. The former pastor has to spend 7 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.

Vatukoula Express Invests In AirConditioned Buses

Good news comes for the travelling public as Vatukoula Express added three new fully air-conditioned buses to its fleet. Flying Prince Transport Company Limited, operator of the Vatukoula Express last week added three new buses to its fleet. This is first time the bus company has invested in three air-conditioned buses costing $750,000. The new buses come as the Kings Highway is now fully upgraded. Company managing director, Satendra Prasad, said the travelling public will now travel very comfortably and in less time, to their destinations. The government has played a very major role in our investment by having low duty on the buses and doing the major maintenance works on the Kings road and this is good news for us, Mr Prasad said. We assure the general public that we will provide one of the best services to our people with their continued support. The company which has been in operation for 60 years provides bus service to the Ba, Vatukoula as well as the interior of Rakiraki along the Kings Highway. We had received a great support from our employees and general public to make this dream come true. The Flying Prince now has 43 buses in its fleet. The major maintenance on the Kings Highway had really eased the travelling public problem, which they had suffered for the past years. They will now travel very comfortably in less time to their destinations, he said.

The introduction of the rebate for TVC (television commercial) production for a minimum qualifying spends of $50,000 is quite simply the best rebate in the world for commercial production. We want to build an industry, train locals and put Fiji on the international stage as far as filmmaking is concerned. While the interest from Indias Bollywood film companies has seen a surge in the economy with local businesses supporting it, Film Fiji has looked at other avenues to market Fiji. We have been approached by many US based companies wishing us to help them with projects in Fiji many of which are still on the drawing board. One of the advantages we have is being able to offer foreign advertising agencies a global reach in terms of directors and directors of photography (DOP) and we want to build the industry in Fiji to international standards.

regions that are also supported by Fiji Airways + Tourism Fiji and Film Fiji (formerly Fiji Audio and Visual Commission). The film industry in Fiji is only as good as its last job so as a company we need to ensure that international standards and services take priority. With this, the company hopes to witness an increase of international branding advertising campaigns being shot in Fiji this year.

Setting roots in Fiji

Mr Leggett said that the upfront help from the local industry and Film Fiji acting chief executive Florence Swamy drew the both of them to set up business here amongst obvious reasons. We want to build an industry, train locals and put Fiji on the international stage as far as filmmaking is concerned and we can only do this by bringing our years of experience to Fiji.

Challenges since set up

Upcoming projects

Government through the Ministry of Health this week signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Kidney Foundation of Fiji which will assist patients needing dialysis treatment. The dialysis stage for kidney patients is where they await the next step of Kidney Failure Management which is Renal Transplant. However there are certain criteria that need to be met before approval is granted for dialysis treatment at the Kidney Foundations of Fiji The Ministry will assist with the Provision of Dialysis at the KFOF for a 3 month period. The estimated cost for the 3 months period will be $7,200.00 per patient. The cost will be fully met by the Ministry giving sufficient time for patients and relatives to seek other funding sources for Transplants which is only done overseas. We hope that with the development of Renal Medicine and partnerships with the Sahyadri Group of Hospitals in India, Renal Transplant can also be done

locally, Health Minister Doctor Neil Sharma said. Provisions have also been made for patients with Acute Renal Failure who may have reversible kidney functions. Patients therefore are advised to consult their Specialist Doctors in seeking assistance for Dialysis, the Health Minister said. This agreement is for one year and $160,000 is the budget plan. It also now allows patients to choose, once they are diagnosed, whether they want the treatment or not, so it gives them the capacity for three months of full treatment, Dr Sharma said. Kidney Foundation president Dewan Maharaj conveyed the foundations appreciation for the new development which will now allow patients to receive joint help. The Ministry and the Kidney Foundation have been working on the agreement for years, but now we can work together to help patients, Mr Maharaj said.

Some exciting marketing plans are underway for the film company this year said Mr Leggett. Our key target markets are Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Asian countries, he said. We will focus on the markets and

One of the biggest draw cards for Fiji is the amount of film gear that is slowly entering the country. He said this has over the years been a major drawback and other companies wanting to film in Fiji note that the cost of freighting gear is extremely expensive. But in the meantime, things are looking good for the company he added.

Refined Sugar For Local Market

As focus on our sugar industry gets stronger, stakeholders are now working on processing refined sugar fit for soft drinks. Sugar Industry Tribunal registrar and Industrial Commissioner, Timothy Brown, confirmed this. Last year, Fiji imported 8000 tonnes of refined sugar, he said. We are simply looking at ways in which all these can be produced to cater for the market locally. Mr Brown also said they are looking at the production of ethanol and cogeneration and how this is going to benefit the industry. We are looking at fuel so we could reduce the fuel bill of our country, he said. Brazil does it well and I know we can do it too and capitalise on it so we could export to our Pacific neighbours. We have a ten year plan on targeting increased productivity from the industry, but our focus is for the next five years, he said. A group of industry stakeholders are currently in the North to encourage farmers to increase the volume of cane they are producing annually. They are also updating farmers on some changes the industry will go through in the not-too-distant future. Mr Brown said the country had been producing 40 tonne per hectare of cane which, according to international standards, is disgraceful. We now need to produce 70 tonnes per hectare in order to be at par with our international counterparts, Mr Brown said.

Full-time classes start April 8.

Industry reforms

Increasing productivity

But all this is not possible without increasing cane productivity. Mr Brown said one of the most important targets the industry was looking at was improving cane productivity.

Mr Brown said reforms for the industry will start this year. But he pointed out that all stakeholders involved will first look at the laws to cover the industry. At the same time, they will need to come up with the structure suited to bring out the best in the industry in the future.

Community members and practitioners are concerned that disaster response systems as well as disaster risk reduction initiatives are not being sustained. The knowledge-sharing forum Pacific Solution Exchange (PSE) is making this its number one discussion across all Pacific islands over the next week, with over 3000 practitioners in India also joining the exchange. Initiating the conversation is Independent Development Professional for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Mr Kada Antony Benny, who has worked with many communities on response and risk reduction initiatives both before and in the aftermath of disasters, including the Orissa Super Cyclone (1999) and Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004).

India Joins The Pacific To Discuss Need For Sustainability Of Disaster Response Systems
In all my assignments, the DRR programme was implemented well with the community and other stakeholders, but after the completion of the projects the stakeholders and the communities did not take much interest in keeping the initiatives alive, Mr Kada Antony Benny said. Therefore, the hardware and software structures created during the programme slowly got destroyed; in some places buildings such as cyclone shelters fell into disuse and became places for anti-social gatherings; and invested resources on social structures such as Task Forces became defunct, thus bringing down all efforts and investments made. He said the challenge is to ensure the sustainability of DRR programmes long after the crisis has ended and, for this reason, he is asking DRR professionals and community members to share their personal stories and lessons learned about how programs may be sustained long term. It is hoped the discussion will help all of those studying or working in DRR to ensure programs are still operating ready to help the local community if another disaster strikes, as failure to sustain these activities during nondisaster periods leaves the community highly vulnerable. If the community is hit by another disaster, there would be no difference in the way it affects them, so, reviving and rejuvenating DRR activities constantly is essential. The discussion about sustaining DRR

programs continues until 13 March 2013, with people invited to become part of the conversation. Joining is free:www.solutionexchange-un.net/ pacific The Pacific Solution Exchange is an email-based knowledge sharing service that enables people across the Pacific to ask each other queries and share answers, insights, experiences and lessons learned to help each other in their climate change and disaster risk work. It has over 1300 members including practitioners, students, government, concerned Elders, and community members in remote islands. PSE is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pacific Centre with support from Australian Aid (AusAID).

Government Repairs Homes

MORE than 100 homes damaged by Tropical Cyclone Evan in Lautoka have been repaired by the government. Lautoka district officer Ruth Atu said house repairs and rebuilding were progressing well with more work expected to be completed this month. "We have secured contractors to rebuild the completely damaged houses while building materials were bought by the government and given to home-owners who had their homes partially damaged by the disaster," Mrs Atu said. "There is a slight disruption to the rehabilitation due to the heavy downpour over the past few days. I want to assure affected residents that government is doing its best to assist everyone." Mrs Atu earlier stated that Lautoka had recorded up to 2767 damaged homes while Yasawa had more than 200 damaged homes. She said the figures were expected to change once the Fiji Military Forces' engineers completed the verification and assessment of damage. "We are yet to determine the exact number of houses that need to be repaired," Mrs Atu said. "At the moment before we can confirm, we are still trying to finalise all the applications for repairs and rebuilding. "The first load of building materials to the Yasawas have been delivered with work to start this week."

Thousands Pass Dead Man In Car

A man lay dead in his car on a busy South Auckland road for five days before a resident raised the alarm with police. Alvin Singh, 34, was last seen leaving his Mangere home on February 22. He was reported missing later that day, but his body was not found until last Wednesday. Detective Inspector Mark Gutry said a nearby neighbour reported the body

to police after the car remained on the busy Puhinui Rd in Papatoetoe for five days, he said. Gutry said it was unusual for a body to lay undetected for so long. However, he said it would not have been easy to spot the man's body as he was lying down. "He was in the front seat, which was reclined, and he had sort of rolled over

The death was not suspicious and there was nothing in the car to indicate how he died, he said. An autopsy returned inconclusive results, but Gutry said toxicology results were due back in the next few weeks. CCTV footage showed Singh pulling up on the side of the road, walking around his car and getting back in. Singh, a Fijian Indian, was convicted in December 2011 of forgery and providing false information in relation to immigration fraud. He was sentenced to 5-months home detention. His partner, Ravina Singh, admitted to 30 charges relating to an immigration scam and convicted to 11 months home detention. The couple gained residence by faking job offers for themselves. Forged stamps in the names of genuine Justices of the Peace were included in their visa applications.

The European Union is willing to send an Elections Observation Mission to Fiji for the 2014 elections. The new Head of the EU Delegation to the Pacific, Andrew Jacobs says the mission will be similar to the one sent to Fiji during the 2006 elections. Jacobs says they are closely following the developments taking place in Fiji. In 2006, as you may recall, the European Union did provide an electoral observation mission. We would be very pleased to consider doing that same again were we to receive an invitation from the government to do so. That is something we are looking to talk with with government partners over the next few weeks. He adds, they also have financial support available for Fijis constitutional process. Jacobs succeeds Alistair MacDonald whose term has ended. Jacobs presented his credentials to the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau at Government House in Suva.

US Ambassador Is WIB Overseer

UNITED States Ambassador to Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga and Tuvalu Frankie Reed has taken up the role of overseer for the WIB awards this weekend. According to her bio data, she served as the deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs responsible for relations with Australia, New Zealand the Pacific islands. She also served in residence at the University of California, Berkeley where she lectured and was the consul general and deputy US observer to the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France. From 2003-2005, she served as deputy chief of mission in Conakry Guinea and deputy chief of mission in Apia, Samoa. She is a member of the California Bar Association and has a JD from the University of California and a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Howard University. Ms Reed studied at the Kogod School of Business at the American University, practised law, worked in print journalism and spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer. Five judges and an overseer had been selected for the Women in Business Awards on March 9 in conjunction with World Women's Day celebrations.

PHYSICALLY-challenged Ulaiasi Matia has spent the past years watching his friends play rugby and only wishes he could be part of the game. The nine-year-old nodded when asked if he could play rugby. Born lame and unable to walk, Matai's days of lying at home are over as he can move around the village and join his friends and cousins in their daily ventures through a wheelchair he received as a gift. The son of Laite and Pome Mate, both of Naduri, says being physicallychallenged and not being able to work is a thing of the past. "Before, I used to just lie around the house now I am sometimes allowed by my mum to enjoy the rain and visit my friends in their houses," said Ulaiasi.

Ulaiasi Matia sits proudly on his wheelchair with his mother, Laite Mate at their home.

"Sunday is the best day for me because I attend morning service and meet the whole village." Mrs Mate said even though her son was born with his special condition, it has not spoilt their happiness because the cheerful boy keeps them laughing with his lively conversations. "We thank Vodafone ATH for the kind deed in providing my son with a new lease of life and it is a joy to see him enjoy himself," she said. Vodafone ATH Foundation executive officer Ambalika Devi said their support was made possible through the joint networks of charity partners, Spinal Injury Association and Action for Children and The Aged Trust Fiji.

A video posted online on Tuesday shows two men screaming on the ground as they are repeatedly struck with batons by Fijian security forces. Fijian Police Commissioner BrigadierGeneral Ioane Naivalurua says the men are understood to be recaptured prisoners and there will be a thorough investigation. New Zealand MP Phil Goff - who is Labour's foreign affairs spokesman and a former Foreign Affairs Minister likened the attack to the vicious beating of New Zealand millionaire Ballu Khan in 2007, after being accused of masterminding an assassination plot against Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama. Mr Goff wants to introduce a motion in parliament next week condemning the latest violence, and expects other politicians to help send a unanimous message to Fiji that it must hold the perpetrators to account. "This isn't isolated, but because it's so graphic and because it's out there

and everybody can see it, I think it's brought an unprecedented focus on what's happening in Fiji," he told Radio New Zealand. He says there are "economic reasons" why Fiji should listen to condemnation from "friends and neighbours" in the Pacific region. "New Zealand and Australia are a huge part of the tourist market to Fiji. The average New Zealander or the average Australian won't really be encouraged to continue to holiday there if elements within the police force can go around, beat you up, and there are no consequences or accountability for them doing that." Mr Goff says Fiji should heed the condemnation if it truly wants to restore diplomatic ties with Australia and New Zealand. The three countries agreed last year to exchange high commissioners, but both Australia and New Zealand are waiting for Fiji's agreement over their appointees.

Aussies Top Visitor List

AUSTRALIA has again topped the visitors list to Fiji last year. With a total of 660,590 visitors to our shores, 337,291 were from island continent. And this was a drop compared to 2011 with 344,829 Aussies arriving into the country. In the latest statistics, government statistician Epeli Waqavonovono said the total visitor number was a 2.1 per cent reduction compared to 2011. "Australia continued to be a major source of visitors to Fiji in 2012, accounting to 51.1 per cent of total arrivals. Such a continued buoyant performance underlines Fiji's popularity as a holiday destination for Australians," he said.

FIJI'S foreign reserves stands around $1.6billion as of February 28 this year. And this is sufficient to cover 4.5 months of retained imports, says the Reserve Bank of Fiji at its Board monthly meeting. Inflation, however, rose to 3.2 per cent in January from 1.5 per cent in December, largely reflecting the impact of Tropical Cyclone Evan on agricultural produce and an increase in domestic prices of cooking gas and kerosene. But the central bank said based on expectations that global commodity prices would stabilise further given the global outlook, and the existing spare capacity in the economy, the year-end inflation rate forecast remained at 3.0

per cent. The board has also agreed to maintain the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) at 0.5 per cent. Governor and board chairman Barry Whiteside said "global economic conditions and outlook remain positive, despite the slight downward revision in global growth prospects by the International Monetary Fund late last month". He said latest indicators on domestic demand noted continued growth in private consumption. Additionally, he said partial indicators for investment activity had been largely positive throughout 2012 with investment now expected to reach 25 per cent of GDP this year.

Brutal Video
THE Fiji Police Force says it has started a thorough investigation in relation to a video that has gone online on a number of websites showing two handcuffed men being brutally beaten up by a group of men. Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said in a press conference at the Government Buildings on Wednesday, the force was disturbed to see the video that had emerged of what appears to be the abuse of two men understood to be recaptured prisoners. Insp Sokomuri said a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances has been ordered. "We want to stress from the outset that no-one should prejudice this investigation by speculating on what happened," Insp Sokomuri said. "We need to formally establish the precise facts and we are determined to do so," he said. Insp Sokomuri also stated "that the Fijian security agencies have worked tirelessly over the past few years to give protection and security to ordinary Fijians who suffered through constant home invasions, robberies and violent and wanton crimes". He said, "These crimes were perpetrated by a group of criminals with impunity and who had absolutely no regard for the lives of ordinary Fijians, respect for basic human dignity and the law." "That said, what is on the video requires investigation. "The procedure of investigation we will follow is similar to those followed when complaints have been lodged against police officers in other jurisdictions such as Australia, South Africa, USA and New Zealand," Insp Sokomuri said. He said they had established that the two men who appear in the video were not the prisoners who escaped from Naboro last year. Insp Sokomuri said they were not prepared to speculate on the identities of those involved, again so as not to prejudice the investigation. He said the force was "determined to expeditiously resolve this issue and investigations had already commenced". He said at this stage some international reporting on the incident was wrong.

Consumers should expect to find a shortage of cassava for another six to seven months.

Five more people have been arrested over a stolen cheque book case from Biosecurity Authority of Fiji in January this year. Fiji Police spokesperson, Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said that the five are in custody and are being questioned. Two men were earlier arrested over

Why do many women and children in the society not speak out and are silent on what they face in relation to sexual offences in Fiji? That is the question that people ask in Fiji and it was reiterated by the Goodwill Ambassador for Women in Fiji and former High Court judge, Nazhat Shameem. Speaking at the launch, a mobile phone service dedicated to the women of Fiji, Ambassador Shameem said for many women and children, their silence comes from a lack of social, political and legal empowerment. She said they do not know what the law said, they do not know who to ask about their rights and if they do speak they are afraid of consequences. Choice Home Loan (CHL) clients of the Fiji Development Bank (FDB) can now enjoy the reduction of interest rates on its home loan facility. The bank board in its meeting earlier this month agreed to a further reduction of one per cent to residential (owneroccupier and investment property) loans with effect from February 1, 2013.

Fiji Development Bank Reduces Rates On Home Loans

and stiff competition from other home loan providers. In 2004 the Bank re-entered the market with the CHL product allowing people to purchase a home for themselves (owneroccupier) or purchase a home/flats as an investment property (for rental).

Line of Credit

High interest rates

In a statement Fiji Development Bank chief executive, Ratu Deve Toganivalu said: High interest rates are the result of high cost of funds and tight liquidity and this affects a lot of our home loan clients with repayments high accordingly. He said the reduced interest rates would result in a reduction on the repayment and hopefully that would alleviate some of the hardships faced by many of clients. The Bank introduced a home loan product in 1990 to diversify its portfolio and assist the construction sector by providing an additional source for financing for housing. The Bank halted this product in 1996 when as a result of high interest rates

The Public Service Commission (PSC) is calling on students wishing to pursue higher education overseas to apply for scholarships advertised by Government for overseas training in the various countries beyond traditional training destinations. PSC permanent secretary Parmesh Chand said these new scholarships are part of Governments Look North Policy in strengthening bilateral relations in the areas of trade, health and more importantly in this regard education and training. Mr Chand said there are long term training opportunities that are available which our students are not making full use of in countries such as India, China, Russia, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Georgia, Morocco and Cuba.

Students To Look Beyond For Overseas Qualifications

Included in this product also was a Line of Credit (LOC), an extension to the home loan facility which allowed the borrower to take a personal loan. A directive from the Minister of Finance in January 2008 led to the suspension of the facility as the lending focus of the Bank changed to what is now described as the Focused and the Non-Focused Sector. As at February 26, 2013, FDB had 645 accounts valued at $31.22m in its home loan portfolio. Meanwhile, the Board also agreed for the Bank to seek Governments approval to re-introduce the CHL product and leasing facilities to cushion the risks associated with lending to the high risk resource based agricultural sectors.

As competition increases amongst our bus operators, more of them are looking at ways to ensure they get a fair share of the market. And what better way to do this than to buy new buses that provide the daily commuter better service and comfort. Nairs Transport Company Limited added two new buses to its growing fleet last week. They will service its Davuilevu and Nakasi routes. Company manager operations, Ritesh Nair said both China-made buses cost $FJ500,000. We cant expect to compete with old buses so with significant investment we hope to provide the satisfactory service there is for the general public, Mr Nair said. The company is mindful that in order

Students are encouraged to take advantage of such opportunities as an avenue to improve the countrys capacity in the medical, engineering, commerce, environmental and mineral science fields. The qualifications offered are also recognized internationally. He said under the provisions of scholarships, there are now 13 students studying in Morocco and another 14 students pursuing their medical degree at the Escuela Latinoamericana De Medicina University as offered by the Government of Cuba. Furthermore, Mr Chand said five students were sponsored under the Fiji Government Overseas Scholarship Programme this year to study in China while 24 of our students are studying in various parts of China under Chinese Government Scholarships.

The support from former Fijians living in Victoria, Australia was commended after Government received $5000 from them for the Prime Ministers Relief Fund. The Permanent Secretary in the Prime Ministers Office, Mr Pio Tikoduadua received the donation and pointed out that todays gesture was proof that former Fijians living abroad still have Fiji at heart. It is a good feeling to know that there are Fijians who still care for Fiji, Mr Tikoduadua said. The group known as the Fiji (Fijians) Aid Melbourne (FijiAM) said that they were happy with the work being carried out by the Government and wanted to do their part.

to deliver the service we must also comply with the regulations of the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The new buses are Euro 3 standard from a Chinese company, Xiamen Golden Dragon Bus Company Limited. Plans The company will be buying more buses in the midyear says Mr Nair and will continue to upgrade its buses. While adding more buses for the company is good, we are also continuing the upgrading of our fleet to ensure that they are definitely safe to travel on and that we are compliant with LTA. With the new buses, we hope that the general public is satisfied. The company has over 40 buses in its fleet.

The groups president, Mr Kamal Kishore, who presented the cheque on behalf of the organisation, said they had donated $70,000 with some of that diverted to the PMs Relief Fund. He said that the organisation had also provided assistance on the ground through the distribution of clothes, food and other essential items in the previous disasters. Mr Tikoduadua said the recent donation will be used for the continuous rehabilitation process for those affected by Tropical Cyclone Evan. Part of the PMs Relief Fund, which is administered by the Ministry of Provincial Development, was used to assist those who had lost their homes during TC Evans.

FIJI police said they were working with Interpol to investigate reports of Fijian militants joining the Taliban. Although the Fiji Muslim League rejected the claims, police criminal investigation department director Luke Rawalai said last Saturday they were "taking this very seriously". He said Fijians joining the Taliban would violate the Pacific island country's counter-terrorist laws and it would be treated as "a major crime". "We are investigating through our channels overseas", police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said, naming Interpol as assisting in the investigation. A Taliban spokesman in Pakistan also

said five weeks ago that they had "welcomed some people from Fiji" to their ranks late last year. However, the Fiji Muslim League said that while some Fijian Muslims had gone to Pakistan to pursue their Islamic studies they were not aware of any connections with the Taliban movement. League president Hafizud Dean Khan said he did not understand why the Taliban would claim it had Fijian members "unless it is aimed at boosting their international image". "Muslims in Fiji have no reason to be oppressed as our country has allowed peaceful existence for all faiths," Khan told the Fiji Times.

Elderly Australian Accused Of Child Rape In Thailand

A 93-year-old Australian man accused of raping four young Thai sisters in one of the worst child sex abuse cases investigated in Thailand is likely never to face justice. Karl Joseph Kraus, a former railway worker from Sydney, wants a court to drop the charges because he says he is suffering from terminal prostate cancer. "I'll be dead," Kraus said from a court cell in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai. "Nobody helps me. This is terrible ... they put me in jail when I was sick," he said. "I can't walk but they still put me in prison." A lawyer acting for Kraus has been gathering evidence from doctors, which he said would lead to Chiang Mai court dismissing the charges on the basis his client was unfit to stand trial. Kraus, who attempted to flee to Burma last year, could be free by March 18, by when the court has agreed to examine his medical records. If convicted of the offences, Kraus would face up to 20 years' jail. Brought from jail to the court on Monday, Kraus complained that "nobody helps me" and "I done nothing wrong." "I don't know what to do," he said. But during his time at the court several people helped him, including two officials from the Australian embassy who brought him fresh muffins and juice. Several jail inmates who were at the court for their own cases also helped Kraus from a prison van and pushed him in a wheelchair into court, where he complained his lawyer was a "fake" and where he complained the Australian officials were not doing enough for him. "The German embassy can find a good lawyer to help me," said Kraus, who was born in Berlin but has been an Australian citizen for decades. Police allege one of four under-age sisters Kraus lured to a house with promises of imported chocolates and English lessons was only five when the abuse began. Police allege they seized more than 100 photographs of naked children, including some with Kraus posing with them. Police say Kraus gave his young victims money. They also allege he emailed some obscene pictures overseas, suggesting he was part of an international paedophilia network. The girl's parents told police they suspected abuses were occurring when the girls lost interest playing outside. Despite the seriousness of the charges Kraus was granted bail of A$12,900 after he was arrested in 2010. While on bail he appeared spritely and drove a car around Chiang Mai while making allegations he was denied medical care and that Thai officials had offered bribes to free him. No evidence was presented to back up the claims. In August last year Kraus crossed the Thai border and illegally entered Burma where he later told police he hoped to be arrested and deported to Australia. But instead Burmese police and officials escorted back across the border into the hands of Thai police who saw that his bail was revoked in Thailand and that he went to jail. Kraus has frequently stayed for long periods in Chiang Mai, a city popular with foreign tourists.

A man dressed in fake ecclesiastical robes was escorted out of a meeting of Catholic cardinals by Swiss Guards after trying to sneak into the closeddoor Vatican meeting. The man, whose real name is Ralph Napierski, introduced himself to reporters as "Basilius" and said he was a member of the "Italian Orthodox Church", which does not exist. Before he was discovered, he told reporters Catholic bishops had "made a mistake by moving priests" who were accused of paedophilia around different parishes. He was wearing a purple scarf around his waist that was similar to the sashes worn by senior Catholic prelates, and

During the talks they will decide the opening date for the conclave where the new pontiff is elected. Mr Napierski claims on his blog he is a founder of the Corpus Dei Catholic order. Police in California have begun an inquiry into the death of an elderly woman after a nurse at her senior community refused to administer CPR. The nurse also disregarded an emergency dispatcher's plea to find "anybody that's willing to help this lady and not let her die" before medics arrived. She said staff members were not allowed to administer CPR. The executive director of Glenwood Gardens in Bakersfield defended the nurse, saying she had followed policy. "In the event of a health emergency at this independent living community our practice is to immediately call emergency medical personnel for assistance and to wait with the individual needing attention until such personnel arrives," Jeffrey Toomer said in a written statement. Bakersfield police said they were opening the inquiry to determine whether there was criminal wrongdoing in the case, but would not comment further on the investigation. The nurse at Glenwood Gardens reportedly called an emergency line after Lorraine Bayless, 87, collapsed and appeared barely to be breathing.

Lorraine Bayless Death: Inquiry After Nurse Refuses CPR

In a tape of the call, dispatcher Tracey Halvorson can be heard saying: "I understand if your boss is telling you, you can't do it but... as a human being... is there anybody that's willing to help this lady and not let her die?" "Not at this time," the nurse replies. The dispatcher suggests the nurse find another staff member - a gardener perhaps - or a passing stranger to help. Kern County Fire Department Deputy Chief Michael Miller said Ms Halvorson followed procedures during the call. "It's not uncommon to have someone refuse to provide CPR if they physically can't do it, or they're so upset they just can't function,'' Mr Miller said. "What made this one unique was the way the conversation on the phone went. It was just very frustrating to anyone listening to it." The elderly woman had no pulse and was not breathing when fire crews reached her, Battalion Chief Anthony Galagaza said. Bayless was later pronounced dead at Mercy Southwest Hospital. Local broadcaster KGET reports her daughter was satisfied with how Glenwood handled the situation.

A record 259 nominees are in the running for this year's Nobel Peace Prize - 209 individuals and 50 organisations - with the laureate to be announced in October, the Nobel Institute says. The list of nominees, which is kept secret for 50 years, is known to include Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot by a Taliban gunman, as well as former Eastern bloc activists and former US president Bill Clinton. "The trend is upward, not every year but almost," the head of the Nobel Institute, Geir Lundestad, said on Monday. "This reflects a growing interest for the prize. The nominations come from the entire world," he said. The previous record dates back to 2011 when 241 candidates were nominated. Thousands of people are eligible to nominate candidates - including former laureates, members of parliament and government around the world, some university professors, and members of certain international organisations - and they can reveal the names they

have put forward. As a result, it is known that Malala and Mr Clinton are nominated, as well as Russian human rights organisation Memorial, and Burma's reformist president Thein Sein. The deadline to submit nominations closed on February 1. The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce its choice in early October, and the prize will be awarded, as tradition dictates, on December 10, the anniversary of the death in 1896 of the Nobel Prizes' founder, philanthropist Alfred Nobel. Last year, the prestigious honour went to the European Union, a highly controversial choice as the bloc struggled through its worst crisis since its creation. "There's no doubt that the choice of laureates in recent years has contributed to the increasing attention [on the award]," Mr Lundestad acknowledged. In 2009, the prize also made waves when US president Barack Obama received the nod just months after he took office and as the US was fighting two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Venezuelan Leader Hugo Chavez Dead

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has died after a two-year battle with cancer, ending his 14-year rule of the oil-rich South American nation. Vice president Nicolas Maduro announced the 58-year-old's death in a televised speech, hours after announcing that Chavez had taken a turn for the worse and accusing the US of being behind a plot to kill him. We have received the hardest and most tragic news that... Comandante President Hugo Chavez died at 4:25 pm," Mr Maduro said on state television, his voice choking. "It's a moment of deep pain." "Let us be worthy heirs of a giant man... honour and glory to Hugo Chavez, may he live forever." "Long live Chavez," the officials surrounding him shouted. Venezuela's military chiefs appeared live on state TV to pledge their loyalty to Mr Maduro, who announced that the army and police were being deployed on the streets. He said the special deployment was "at this very moment" being rolled out "to accompany and protect our people and guarantee the peace." Chavez supporters took the streets of Venezuela to chant slogans in support of their former leader. In his earlier speech, the vice-president had accused Venezuela's "historic enemies" of causing Chavez's cancer, and expelled two US military officers for plotting against his government.

The United States rejected the allegation, saying it was "absurd" to assert Washington was somehow behind the cancer. After Chavez's death was announced, US president Barack Obama issued a statement saying the US supported the Venezuelan people in a "new chapter". "As Venezuela begins a new chapter in its history, the United States remains committed to policies that promote democratic principles, the rule of law, and respect for human rights," Mr Obama said in a short written statement. But a more bellicose note was struck by Ed Royce, the Republican chairman of the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs, who said in a statement: "Hugo Chavez was a tyrant who forced the people of Venezuela to live in fear. His death dents the alliance of anti-US leftist leaders in South America. Good riddance to this dictator." Chavez had undergone four operations in Cuba for a cancer that was first detected in his pelvic region in mid-2011. His last surgery was on December 11, and he had not been seen in public since. The former army paratrooper first came to prominence as the leader of a failed coup in 1992. Six years later he was swept into office in a wave of popular outrage against Venezuela's traditional political elite. He won another six-year term last October.

The Supreme Court in Brisbane has been told the Jayant Patel case has made many doctors anxious about performing risky procedures. Patel, 62, has pleaded not guilty to unlawfully killing pensioner Mervyn Morris, who died three weeks after Patel removed his sigmoid colon in the Bundaberg Hospital in 2003. The court has heard there was a previous trial. Gastroenterologist Johan van den Bogaerde has been cross-examined in the witness box by the Crown. He says the previous trial was very important in the medical fraternity. Dr van den Bogaerde told the court the work performed by doctors is extremely risky and that, unfortunately, people sometimes die. He said the case had made him extremely worried about performing

endoscopies on patients and that this feeling was shared by many doctors, whether they were overseas-trained or not. Diagnosis supported Meanwhile, a third doctor has given evidence in support of Patel's diagnosis of Mr Morris. Nambour Hospital's director of surgery, Ratna Aseervatham, reviewed Mr Morris's medical records. He told the court the top of his list of possible diagnoses was diverticular bleeding, in line with Patel's conclusion. Dr Aseervatham said the decision to operate is a balancing act between benefit and risk and comes down to a doctor's call. Under cross examination, he agreed there were alternatives at the time, including transfusing Mr Morris and sending him home to be monitored.

A 75-year-old Japanese man died after 25 hospitals refused to admit him to their emergency rooms 36 times over two hours, an official said. The man, who lived alone in a city north of Tokyo, called an ambulance after suffering breathing problems at his home in January. Paramedics rushed to his house but were told in turn by all 25 hospitals in the area that they could not accept the man because they did not have enough doctors or any free beds, a local city official said, adding some institutions were contacted more than once. The ambulance eventually made a 20 minute drive to a hospital in neighbouring Ibaraki prefecture, but the man was pronounced dead shortly

after arrival. The cause of death has not been made public. One of the paramedics told Jiji Press they had never experienced "a patient being rejected so many times". The city of Kuki, where the man lived in Saitama prefecture, has asked hospitals in the region to improve their emergency room capacity, the official said. Public healthcare in Japan is heavily subsidised and generally of a high global standard. But commentators warn that with a population that is living longer and with fewer young people entering the workforce, healthcare operators could become increasingly strained over the coming decades.

Two Suffer Heat Exhaustion In Plane Incident

Two people have been taken to hospital after they were overcome by heat on a Qantas flight from Sydney to Lord Howe Island. The plane was forced to return to Sydney's domestic terminal after a problem with the air-conditioning system. Paramedics met the plane on landing and say 50 passengers were checked for heat stress. Adam Wallace from the NSW Ambulance Service says the two patients taken to hospital are in a stable condition. "Paramedics assessed every patient who was on board the flight, and while every one of those patients reported that they had in some way been affected by the heat, only two patients needed to be transferred to hospital suffering dehydration," he said. Reports said the cabin temperature climbed to almost 40 degrees Celsius onboard the Dash-8 aircraft, which was making the two-hour trip to Lord Howe Island.

Victim Called Mum After Three Hours Of Terror At The Hands Of Rape Gang
DUMPED on the side of the road in a quiet suburban street - bloodied and distraught after being gang raped for hours - a young woman made a heartbreaking call to her mum for help. "It is horrendous. It doesn't get much worse than this," sex crime squad commander Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec said. The victim's ordeal began soon after she left a friend's house in Merindah Rd, Baulkham Hills, when a greencoloured sedan with a P-plate pulled up beside her. Police said the five men in the vehicle called out to the woman and asked for directions to a local shopping centre. They asked her to hop into the car and take them there but she refused. One of the men then jumped out, grabbed the woman and dragged her into the vehicle. "It's a horrendous incident for anyone to be subjected to," Supt Kerlatec said. "A young lady walking along the street, regardless of the time of day, regardless of the place, should be able to walk safely." After calling her mother for help from the side of Waterloo Ave at Castle Hill, the victim was taken to Westmead Hospital, where she spent Sunday being treated for various injuries and being counseled. Police have obtained some information about the attack but said the woman was so traumatized they were waiting until she was well enough to give a full statement. However police believe the carload of males had been seen staking out the The 18-year-old was confused and hysterical. She was snatched about 1am last Sunday off a well-lit street while walking home from a house party at Baulkham Hills in Sydney's north-west and dragged into a car full of men. Inside the vehicle she was forced to lie across the laps of three back-seat passengers as a "chubby Caucasian male" driver took them to an undisclosed location. Once there she was repeatedly sexually and physically assaulted by multiple men for up to three hours before they threw her back in the car and dumped her in a Castle Hill street, not far from her home. party earlier in the evening. They said there was no information yet to suggest the men knew the victim or anyone at the party, describing the attack as "opportunistic". Supt Kerlatec played down fears the rape gang could strike again but urged women to take extra safety precautions when walking the streets at night. He advised women to walk with friends, stay in well-lit areas, keep mobile telephones with them and not get close to anyone asking directions. Police are desperate to speak to anyone who might have seen anything, or who might have seen the vehicle in the Baulkham Hills or Castle Hill areas.

Queen Leaves Hospital After Stomach Bug

A smiling and apparently fit Queen Elizabeth has left hospital a day after she was admitted with symptoms of gastroenteritis. The 86-year-old monarch shook hands with medical staff on the steps of the King Edward VII hospital in central London before being driven away by limousine. Buckingham Palace officials said she had first developed symptoms of the stomach bug last Friday and the decision to take her to hospital was a precautionary measure. Royal aides suggested at the time she might stay in for a couple of days. A palace spokeswoman confirmed the monarch's diary for this week would remain suspended. "Engagements cancelled or postponed this week remain so. Next week we'll have to see, as she has only just been

released from hospital," she said. The Queen, accompanied by 91-yearold husband Prince Philip, had been due to visit Rome on Wednesday and Thursday. The royals had been scheduled to receive a ceremonial welcome, meet Italian president Giorgio Napolitano and attend a private lunch, before visiting the Pantheon monument. No announcement has been made on whether the Rome visit will be rescheduled. The Queen is known for enjoying robust health and rarely misses engagements. After first feeling unwell on Friday, she reportedly presented a long-service medal to a staff member before being driven to hospital on Sunday. She was last admitted to hospital a decade ago when she had a knee operation.

THE deadly sinkhole that swallowed a man as he slept has finally been revealed. The six-metre wide sinkhole opened without warning underneath Jeff Bush's bedroom on Sunday (AEST). Jeremy Bush, 35, tried to reach his brother, 37, but he was helpless and had to be saved himself by Sheriff's Duty Deputy Douglas Duvall. The sinkhole was shown for the first time as crews razed more than half of the home in Brandon, in Tampa's Hillsborough County, Florida. Bush and relatives prayed with a pastor as the home - where he lived with his girlfriend, Rachel Wicker; their daughter, Hannah, 2; and others - was demolished and choked with tears as they waited for firefighters to salvage anything possible from inside. "I feel like they could have tried harder to get my brother out of there," Bush said. "That was my brother. No one is even talking about what my mom and dad are going through. They don't want to be on camera. My mom and dad are going through hell right now. "I want some kind of memories of him (Jeff Bush)," his brother said. "I want his hats. I want his clothes. I want anything that was in his room."" The home had been owned by Leland Wicker, Rachel's grandfather, since the 1970s. The operator of the heavy equipment worked gingerly, first taking off a front wall. Family belongings were scooped onto the lawn gently in hopes of salvaging parts of the family's 40-year history in the home. As of Monday, a Bible, family photos, a jewelry box and a pink teddy bear for Hannah were among the items saved. Firefighters also were able to pick out the purse of one of the women in the home.

Deadly Sinkhole That Killed Jeff Bush In Brandon, Tampa Revealed

Cheers went up from family, friends and neighbours each time something valuable was salvaged. Wanda Carter, the daughter of Leland Wicker, cradled the large family Bible in her arms. She said her mother and father had stored baptism certificates, cards and photos between the pages of that Bible over the years. "It means that God is still in control, and He knew we needed this for closure,'' she said, crying. Carter said she spent from age 11 to 20 in the home, and she had to close her eyes as the home was knocked down. "Thank you for all of the memories and life it gave us,'' she said. Crews wanted to clear the house so they could better see the depth of the problem and determine how many other homes could be in danger. Authorities have yet to say how far the depths could have extended. A second sinkhole appeared in the Tampa area, kilometres from the one that opened beneath Bush. The latest sinkhole opened between two homes and was about 3.6 metres round, 1 metre deep around the edge and about 1.5 metres deep in the centre, said Hillsborough County spokesman Willie Puz. "It is not geologically connected (to the deadly sinkhole)," Puz said.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) announced that the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) admitted a record 9,780 immigrants in 2012, a 30 percent increase from the number admitted in 2011. The increase is part of a long term plan to make the CEC a bigger part of the immigration system, which CIC set upon after concluding that individuals with prior Canadian work experience were more likely to successfully integrate into Canadas labour market and economy as permanent residents. The CEC requires a foreign national to have work experience in Canada in a skilled occupation, defined as an occupation in NOC 0, A or B, in order to qualify for permanent residence. The requirements for qualifying under

For applicants in the post-graduate stream of the program, the time frame during which they could obtain their work experience was increased from up to two years prior the date of the application, to three years. Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney lauded the increase in the number of people using the CEC in 2012, and said the program benefits the Canadian economy. The CEC allows these skilled and educated individuals to bring their skills and talents, contribute to our economy and help renew our workforce so that Canada remains competitive on the world stage, said Kenney.

Justin Trudeaus campaign for the Liberal leadership has drawn a staggering 150,000 supporters to the party, according to tallies provided at the sign-up deadline last Sunday night. Thats 20,000 more than the New Democratic Party had in total memberships during its leadership campaign last year and a roughly 150 per cent increase in the number of people who were signed up as backers of the federal Liberals only a few months ago. It also doesnt include all the new supporters and members gathered up by the other seven leadership campaigns a total the Liberal Party plans to release Monday. Trudeau said the Sunday evening that this explosion of interest means that hes finding an eager audience for what he calls an open, positive campaign. People are hungry for change, he said. People want to be part of a movement. Nearly three-quarters of these new Trudeau backers are also new to the Liberal party, testing the party out by signing up in a new class called supporters not full, card-carrying members of the party, but eligible to vote in the leadership contest that will be settled April 14. As well, Trudeau has signed up 10,000 people in his own volunteer category and these are the people who will be busy in the next few weeks getting people to register and to vote in early April. Trudeau says the numbers are vivid proof that the Liberal party is in the midst of a revival and cant be written off so easily by its Conservative and NDP rivals. Conservatives dont give out membership numbers, but Fred DeLorey, the partys communications

Justin Trudeau Campaign Draws 150,000 Supporters To Liberal Party

director, noted that the last leadership contest in 2004 put the membership at about 250,000, while the New Democrats reported membership figures of about 128,000 for its 2012 leadership that elected Thomas Mulcair as leader. During its heyday, when the Liberal party was switching leaders from Jean Chrtien to Paul Martin in 2003, about 250,000 were signed up as Grits. Trudeau, who has been attracting unusually large crowds on his crosscountry leadership tour, may help the party surpass those figures from a decade ago. The deadline for signing up new members and supporters for the leadership fell on the same day as the fourth debate for the leadership contenders. The focus at this debate, held in Halifax showed many of the contenders looking beyond April 14 toward the next election. Vancouver MP Joyce Murray, who has been crusading in favour of electoral co-operation with the New Democrats, Greens and other progressive voters, drew some flak from Trudeau and other rivals for her plan. Murray says shes not talking about a merger Im talking about one-time co-operation . . . to defeat Stephen Harper, she says but Montreal MP and former astronaut Marc Garneau portrayed her plan as defeatist. Joyce, have you abandoned the Liberal party? Have you lost faith in our party? Garneau asked her in his one-on-one debate with her. Garneau also used the debate to once again prod Trudeau to provide more policy substance, but Trudeau said the Liberals chief concern should be connecting with citizens. On the question of electoral cooperation, Trudeau told Murray that toxic partisanship would only increase under her plan. If you make a deal with the NDP, that positive approach is the first to go, he said. Murray may have emerged as a target because of a flurry of endorsements over the past week including from prominent environmentalist David Suzuki, as well as the progressive organization leadnow.ca that could vault her support into serious numbers. Her campaign team reports that Murray volunteers were signing up about 1,000 supporters each night over three nights before last Sundays debate. Martha Hall Findlay, the former MP for Willowdale who created sparks by attacking Trudeau in the last debate, cast her eyes in this debate on the next election and the attacks that any future leader was going to experience from Conservatives. How do we win in 2015? Hall

Findlay asked candidate Deborah Coyne. She said it was fine to talk about engaging people and attracting Liberals to policy debates, but we have to beat Stephen Harper and we cant be Boy Scouts about this either. None of us likes attack politics. None of us likes what has happened. But Ill be damned if Im going to wait around and react to another set of attack ads. Trudeau, in his closing statements, gave a nod in this direction as well, pitching his comments as much at Canadians as he was to the Liberals in the room. Canadians are tired of the cynicism, tired of the negativity, want to be once again builders of this country, he said. The attacks are already starting, Trudeau said, but he rebuffs suggestions that it shows Conservatives are afraid of him. Stephen Harper is afraid of engaged, empowered, active citizens. Stephen Harper isnt afraid of me; hes afraid of you.

Toronto Now Fourth Largest City In North America

The City of Toronto is bigger than ever. Toronto officials announced Tuesday that Hogtown is now the fourth largest municipality in North America. According to a report received by the citys economic development committee Tuesday, Torontos growing population has pushed the city from the fifth largest in North America to the fourth biggest. City officials base the milestone on Statistics Canadas July 1, 2012, population estimates released last month that peg Torontos population at 2.79 million. Mexico is the largest North American city with 8.8 million residents, followed by New York at 8.2 million

people, and Los Angeles with 3.8 million inhabitants. Toronto came in slightly ahead of fifthplace Chicago, which has a population of 2.7 million. City officials say Torontos population has grown steadily for the last 10 years and is increasing at the rate of around 38,000 people annually. These population figures are another sign confirming Torontos steady growth, Mayor Rob Ford said in a prepared statement. Toronto is a desirable location for people to live and work. We are attracting people from across North America and other parts of the world.

Many crossborder shoppers dont pay taxes during peak times Canadians retailers arent happy about a policy that lets cross-border shoppers get back into Canada without paying duty. Canadian Border Services Agency guards are waving through travellers during peak times, such as Black Friday and over the Christmas holidays. Its all because of a 13-year-old Revenue Canada policy; if a shopper goes beyond the exemption limit on a long weekend and theres a heavy lineup, odds are that the border guards will let those folks skip out on duty to speed things up. Mike Klassen with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says its not fair for local shops that are trying to stay competitive. For a lot of the retailers close to the border, its a real frustration for them. They have to struggle with a lot of

Canadian Retailers Angry Over Duty-Free Border Policy

Canadian consumers crossing the border. To have this happen to them in addition, it definitely adds their frustrations and makes it a lot harder to run their business, explains Klassen. He suggests the government should look at helping out independent businesses. What the Canadian government could do to try and make life a little easier and level the playing field is to remove the duties that small business has to pay when they cross the border. Klassen argues the recent raise in limits on what you can buy in the US without getting taxed only makes things worse for BC businesses and the local economy. Canadian small businesses provide one third of the GDP in BC, and over half of private sector employment is done through small business. Its a huge part of the economy, we really need to support them, adds Klassen.

Target Opens Stores In Canada

US discount chain Target has opened in three communities west of Toronto: Guelph, Fergus and Milton. The three stores will serve as testing grounds for a phased roll-out of the brand across much of the country later this year. In the industry, its called a soft launch, but that lingo almost certainly wont keep shoppers away before the grand opening in early April. Target Canada president Tony Fisher says its important that we can test and work out any of the bugs and kinks that we might find. Another 21 stores will open this month throughout Ontario. Overall, the company is expected to open between 125 and 135 locations in Canada. After the Ontario rollout, Target will begin moving into western provinces throughout the year and eventually into Quebec. None of those opening dates have been announced. The Mr. Rogers theme song is what the US department store has been using in their commercials to advertise their big Canadian opening. However, are consumers and retailers making too much of this? The press is doing what they do, which is make it news, but I think also Canadians are anticipating it, says Maureen Atkinson, senior partner at JC Williams Group. She thinks competitors need to be on their toes. Retailers who are paying attention it could make them better retailers, explains Atkinson. Anticipating whats going to happen and putting forward their best game. One of the things about competition, the main beneficiary is always consumers. Increased choice and I suspect even better prices, says David Soberman, professor of marketing at the Rotman School of Management. So in that regard, this is a really positive development. As for competition from Walmart, Soberman says Target should be fine. It will certainly mean less of a free pass, which is what theyve had for some time in Canada, he explains

The province says it has done what it can to warn businesses ahead of the return of the PST. The government has sent letters, made phone calls, and held seminars to prepare businesses for the switch from the HST to the PST. The number of businesses that still need to register concerns Minister of State for Small Business Naomi Yamamoto. For a lot of small businesses, they dont have accountants or bookkeepers. They actually have to do it themselves.

Thousands Of Businesses Yet To Register To Collect PST

Its important that of course we get the message out to small business owners, but this is not something that they are actually looking forward to do. She suspects many will wait until the last minute. I think its fair to say the vast majority of businesses are not looking forward to returning to two tax systems. Yamamoto says her government has sent out letters, made phone calls and held seminars to get the word out. If they have any questions, theres a website. Its pstinbc.ca

Morgue Worker Sacked For Reportedly Snapping Pics Of Dead Girls

A city morgue employee was fired in 2012 after he committed inappropriate acts, the head coroner for Quebec City said Wednesday afternoon. Dr. Louise Nolet wouldnt go into detail about the acts, but she said she was forced to make a public announcement after rumours about the fired employee circulated in the media. Earlier Wednesday, an anonymous source told Sun News Networks sister French-language station, LCN, that a Quebec City employee had a personal collection of photos he took of corpses of women and young girls who were brought to the morgue. The caller said morgue employees caught their colleague looking at his photo collection in 2011. He looked at the photos when his colleagues were eating lunch, the source said. He had been taking photos of women and young girls since 1995. Nolet said police investigated the inappropriate acts and did not find any criminal wrongdoing. Nothing that was found related to juvenile pornography, she said. The investigation led to the employee being fired in March 2012. Nolet added that all the material that was seized was immediately destroyed after the investigation. Since the firing, certain protocols at the morgue have been tightened, including the offices hiring policies, she said. Nolet added that her office regularly communicates with employees about their ethical obligations. Nolet would not confirm or speak to any of the allegations about the fired employee that were made in the media.

British Columbia Premier Christy Clarks government has survived a crucial budget vote in the legislature. The Liberals managed to muster enough members to the legislature to get a 45-38 vote in favour of the budget, which now proceeds to third reading. Independent MLAs John Slater and Vicki Huntington voted with the Liberals. The budget support vote was being billed as an endorsement of Clarks embattled leadership during a particularly rough time leading up to the May 14 provincial election. Clarks Liberals have been rocked by the leaked release of a party strategy to court ethnic voters that has already resulted in the resignation of the premiers former deputy chief of staff and the multiculturalism minister. Liberal Kash Heed, who has been critical of the governments ethnic strategy, was not in the legislature for the vote. Clark announced Monday her Multiculturalism Minister John Yap is out of cabinet pending the outcome of a review of the controversial ethnic vote-winning strategy that was leaked by the NDP Opposition last week. Clark said Yap stepped aside until a review of the leaked strategy is completed by her deputy minister John Dyble. Yap, who never saw the report, joined Clarks former deputy chief of staff, Kim Haakstad, as victims of the January 2012 report. On Friday, Haakstad resigned without severance over the document. Clark said there could be more action following the release of Dybles report, and she didnt stop short when asked if any action could involve herself. Lets see what the report says, she said. When the report comes out and we see what it recommends and tells us, I will take action and then well see what that means. Yap told reporters Monday that he was taking responsibility for the contents of the report.

B.C. Liberals Survive Crucial Budget Vote As Key Party Members Missing From Legislature
This is an issue that involves multiculturalism and the responsibility rests with me as the current minister responsibility for multiculturalism. Yap said he doesnt know who wrote the report, but since it falls under his ministry, hes decided to take the fall until the completion of Dybles review, which he believes, will clear him. I, as you would have seen last Wednesday during question period, was caught completely off guard by this document, said Yap. The document never hit my desk and some of the ideas in there and language used is completely unacceptable. Yaps resignation was met with surprise by the Canadian Chinese National Council, who had been conducting meetings with Yap about a possible Liberal government apology about the former Chinese head tax. We thank Mr. Yap for his cabinet service and hope that he will return to the executive council soon, said CCNC executive director Victor Wong in a statement. Burnaby North Liberal Richard Lee said the government is still working on a Chinese head tax apology, even though the ethnic vote strategy describes apologies for historic wrongs as quick wins for the government. The Canadian government charged Chinese immigrants a head tax starting in the late 1800s to discourage immigration to Canada. Ralph Sultan, the Minister of State for Seniors, is taking over Yaps duties. The 17-page document at the centre of the controversy was emailed by Haakstad to several other Liberals via private emails. Clark issued a third apology on Monday over the growing scandal, but this time her statement was made in the legislature. The plan made several proposals to entice ethnic voters in the run-up to the May provincial election. It also suggested government resources could be used. Clark said the document should never

have been created. I want to apologize for the ideas in it and I want to apologize for the language in it as well, she said. The premier said that if she could do this over again she would have been in the legislature herself on Feb. 28 to offer her personal apology for the strategy. Deputy Premier Rich Coleman read an apology statement last week in the legislature on behalf of Clark who was in Vancouver at meetings. Liberal caucus members leaving a

meeting with Clark Monday at the legislature said they were united behind her, but were also awaiting the outcome of Dybles review. Clark met with her Liberal Party caucus less than 24 hours after announcing she wasnt quitting over the fallout from a controversial document. Clarks cabinet ministers said Sunday they supported the premier even though mistakes had been made. Cultural Development Minister Bill Bennett calling the leaked document a doozy of a political gaff.

Arrest Warrant Issued After Sun Sea Migrant Fails To Show Up For Deportation

Going down from two carry-ons to one Youll want to pack a little lighter if you have a flight booked on WestJet next month or beyond. The airline is changing your carry-on allowance. Right now, youre allowed two carryon bags, plus a personal item. But starting April 4th, you will only be able to bring one carry-on, plus a personal item, like a purse or laptop. This baggage allowance is pretty much the world standard, says Robert Palmer with WestJet. So, from a guest experience perspective, it makes

Westjet Reducing Carry-On Allowance

sense to harmonize carry-on allowance between ourselves and other airlines around the world where our guests are travelling. Weve had seven consecutive months now, of record load factors, going back to last August. Those bins are getting tight. This is an opportunity to make sure that everybody has a chance to get their stuff into the overhead bin or underneath their seat, he adds. Palmer adds fewer bags on board will help WestJet stay on time. He also says it will result in faster, more efficient boarding.

A migrant smuggled to Canada aboard the freighter MV Sun Sea is wanted on a nationwide arrest warrant after he failed to show up for his deportation three weeks ago, sources said Tuesday. Although the Sri Lankan mans refugee claim had been denied and his appeal to the courts had been rejected, the Canada Border Services Agency agreed to release him from custody five days before he was to be deported. When he didnt turn up for his scheduled removal, the CBSA

issued an arrest warrant on Feb. 13. Although it seems likely he has gone into hiding, migrants facing deportation will sometimes leave Canada on their own without notifying the authorities. The CBSA would not discuss the case, citing privacy considerations. Nor would it say whether other Sun Sea migrants were wanted on immigration warrants. Public Safety Minister Vic Toews spokeswoman also declined to comment on the matter.

Child Abuse
Child Sexual Abuse
who are victims of sexual abuse should always be reassured that they are not responsible for what has happened to them. Offer encouragement for victims by supporting organizations that help victims of incest or by simply reassuring victims of sexual abuse that they should not feel shame or guilt. It is important to understand that troubled families can be helped and that everyone can play a part in the process. Teach others about child abuse. Help make others aware of sexual abuse by arranging for knowledgeable guest speakers to present to your organizations or groups. Encourage your local school board to establish programs to educate both teachers and students about the problem. Report, report, report. If you suspect sexual abuse and believe a child to be in imminent danger, report it to the local child protective services agency (often called social services or human services). Professionals who work with children are required by law to report reasonable suspicion of abuse or neglect. Furthermore, citizens who suspect abuse or neglect are required to report it. Reasonable suspicion based on objective evidence, which could be firsthand observation or statements made by a parent or child, is all that is needed to report. Remember that you may be the only person in a position to help a child who is being sexually abused. Evaluate Situations for Child Abuse Sometimes you think you see adults abusing children in public and you don't know whether you should get involved, or how. Is it your business when you see parents hitting, slapping or otherwise hurting their children? Can you help? The answer is yes. Although most parents want to be good parents, sometimes factors such as job loss, abuse as a child, substance abuse, mental health concerns, lack of information, lack of parenting skills, or other problems create stress and reduce coping skills. You may be able to diffuse a minor situation by taking the time to calmly offer help and support. Some hints when talking to adults about the children in their care include: Be helpful and supportive, rather than judgmental and critical. Strike up a conversation with the adult and be empathetic. Say something like My child did the same thing the other day," or "Being a parent/grandparent/babysitter can be tough sometimes, can't it? Focus attention on the child, saying, "He or she sure has a lot of energy." Paying attention to the child may divert the parent's anger.

Counting By 3 Monkey

What Should You Look for If You Suspect Sexual Abuse? Children who are sexually abused may exhibit behavioral changes, based on their age. Children up to age 3 may exhibit: Fear or excessive crying Vomiting Feeding problems Bowel problems Sleep disturbances Failure to thrive Children ages 2 to 9 may exhibit: Fear of particular people, places or activities Regression to earlier behaviors such as bed wetting or stranger anxiety Victimization of others Excessive masturbation Feelings of shame or guilt Nightmares or sleep disturbances Withdrawal from family or friends Fear of attack recurring Eating disturbances Symptoms of sexual abuse in older children and adolescents include: Depression Nightmares or sleep disturbances Poor school performance Promiscuity Substance abuse Aggression Running away from home Fear of attack recurring Eating disturbances Early pregnancy or marriage Suicidal gestures Anger about being forced into situation beyond ones control Pseudo-mature behaviors What Can You Do? Protect your children. Teach your children what appropriate sexual behavior is and when to say NO if someone tries to touch sexual parts of their bodies or touch them in any way that makes them feel uncomfortable. Also, observe your children when they interact with others to see if they are hesitant or particularly uncomfortable around certain adults. It is critical to provide adequate supervision for your children and only leave them in the care of individuals whom you deem safe. Support child abuse victims. Children need to know that they can speak openly to a trusted adult and that they will be believed. Children

Simple Breath Test Could Help Detect Stomach Cancer

A quick and simple breath test can diagnose stomach cancer, a new study has revealed. Scientists from Israel and China found the test was 90 percent accurate at detecting and distinguishing cancers from other stomach complaints in 130 patients. According to the British Journal of Cancer, the test could revolutionise and speed up the way this cancer is diagnosed. About 7,000 UK people develop stomach cancer each year and most have an advanced stage of the disease. Two-fifths of patients survive for at least a year, but only a fifth are still alive after five years, despite treatment.

Currently doctors diagnose stomach cancer by taking a biopsy of the stomach lining using a probe and a flexible camera passed via mouth and down the gullet. The new test looks for chemical profiles in exhaled breath that are unique to patients with stomach cancer. Cancer appears to give off a signature smell of volatile organic compounds that can be detected using the right technical medical kit - and perhaps even dogs. The science behind the test itself is not new - many researchers have been working on the possibility of breath tests for a number of cancers, including lung. But the work by Prof Hossam Haick, of the Israel Institute of Technology, suggests it is a good way to spot stomach cancer. In the study, 37 of the patients had stomach cancer, 32 had stomach ulcers and 61 had other stomach complaints. As well as accurately distinguishing between these conditions 90 percent of the time, the breath test could tell the difference between early and late-stage stomach cancers.

Though women have smaller brains than men, they are more efficient, a new study has revealed. This may explain why women can show just as much intelligence as men, although their brains are eight per cent smaller. Researchers from universities in Los Angeles and Madrid carried out a series of intelligence tests on men and women. They found that despite the fact the women had smaller brains they performed better in inductive reasoning, some numerical skills and were better at keeping track of a changing situation, as reported.

Eating Your Greens Can Boost Gut Health

Healthy eating as a mantra may have gained popularity but it could be a little too heavy on the pockets of those from low income groups, research says. The comparatively higher cost of eating a nutritious and balanced diet could actually drive such groups towards cheaper, processed foodstuffs with high fat, salt and sugar content, according to a finding. Food is becoming more expensive because of issues that include drought and flooding as well as increased shipping and transport costs. "You read a lot in the media about housing stress, but it applies to food as well," says Paul Ward, professor of public health at Flinders, who led the study, according to a Flinders statement. "With increasing obesity, governments tend to focus their attention on telling people to eat healthy, but the problem

The results show size does not matter for women, said Trevor Robbins, professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Cambridge University. "The smaller size could represent more intense packing of nerve cells or more active signalling between them. Meaning they are operating more efficiently," the daily quoted him as saying.

"If it is chewing up a third of your income to potentially eat healthily, and you have increasing utility bills and rental or mortgage payments, something`s got to give. The next step is to buy energy-dense but nutrientpoor food, because that is all they can afford," added Ward. Ward said that to combat potential health problems such as obesity and diabetes, some governments overseas are reducing the cost of healthy foods in low-income areas. "That approach has been shown to be effective in increasing the purchase of healthy foods in those locations," Ward said.

After 36 Years, Rishi Kapoor Does Ajay, Kajol To Be Back Together The Tap Dance In A Movie
Bollywood actors Ajay Devgan and Kajol are going to woo their audience once again. The successful off-screen couple will be seen in a film together again. The married paired worked in films like 'Hulchul', 'Pyaar Toh Hona Hee Tha', 'Raju Chacha', 'Dil Kya Kare' and 'U Me Aur Hum'. But except, 'Pyaar Toh Hona Hee Tha', none of the movies spelled magic at the box-office. Ajay said that they are planning something,"We are working on something for Kajol but lets see if we are together or someone else. We should get the right kind of script to come together," Ajay said.

"We are planning something but I can't talk about it right now. When the time is right we will talk about it. Whatever we work out we will let you all know... it is too early to talk about it," he said. Ajay might produce the film as well. "We are planning a few things, lets see... it depends on a lot of things," he said. The 43-year-old actor will be next seen in Sajid Khan's remake of 'Himmatwala' opposite southern actress Tamannah. Kajol was last seen in a important role in Karan Johar's home production 'We Are Family' alongside Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal. She played a mother in the movie.

Rishi Kapoor who is sporting a hippie look in David Dhawans Chashme Baddoor remake will be performing a tap dance with Ali Zafar in the film. The veteran actor was last seen performing the dance style 36 years ago! In the 1977 film, Hum Kisise Kum Naheen, Rishi Kapoor had performed a tap dance for the song Mil Gaya Hum Ko Saathi Mil Gaya. The scene has been shot and he will groove to the tunes of the song Early Morning. Rishi Kapoor has done mind blowing steps in the song, which reminds you of his Mil gaya hum ko saathi mil gaya from Hum Kisise Kum Naheen days, where the young Rishi was seen in off white clothes and dancing his heart out, says a source. In Chashme Baddoor too, he is

dancing with full zest. We are sure the audiences are going to have a treat as he is set to do tap dancing after 36 years, the source added. The 60 year old actor will be seen playing a hopeless romantic bachelor in the film. He will portray a retired sailor sporting tattoos and riding a Harley-Davidson bike. His look is said to be inspired by adult film actress Sunny Leone`s husband Daniel Weber, who dons a stubble and has tattoos inked all over. Chashme Baddoor is the remake of a 1981 fim of the same name. The movie also stars actors Siddharth, Divyendu Sharma and southern actress Taapsee Pannu. The film is set to hit the theatres on April 5th. Directed by Dhawan, the movie is produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures.

Maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, despite a series of flops, criticism and controversies, has managed to impress members from Telugu film fraternity, who watched his latest film "The Attacks of 26/11". The film, on the terror attacks which rocked Mumbai Nov 26, 2008, released worldwide last Friday. It features Nana Patekar, Sanjeev Jaiswal, Atul Kulkarni, Ganesh Yadav and Farzad Jehani in lead roles. Parag Sanghvi has produced the film, which has been dubbed in Telugu as "26/11 India Pai Dhadi". Certain members of Telugu film fraternity took to Twitter to share their views on the movie. Here's what they wrote: Actor Charmi Kaur: Just saw 26/11. I have no words but lots to express. Filmmaker Puri Jagannadh: Still reeling in the patriotic hangover after

watching the terrific emotional saga 'The Attacks of 26/11'. Who else on the Indian movie arena can dare to venture and narrate it to the levels of such emotional excellence but RGV? AlQaeda will never let its members watch this movie for it will sure transform its terrorists into humanitarians. Actor Subbaraju: Just watched 'The Attacks of 26/11', amazing film. Watching movies like this amazes me, how updated and contemporary is the classic text book of film making called RGV. Actor Madhu Shalini: Saw 26/11. Brilliant film. RGV at his best and my favourite Nana Patekar has delivered another outstanding performance. I just can't get over the movie. Want to watch it again! Writer Kona Venkat: RGV has proven once again that he is the master of realistic cinema.

John To Donate His Clothes For A Charity

Actor-producer John Abraham plans to donate and auction most of his clothes to raise money for a charity. "I would like to give away most of my clothes to charity and empty my wardrobe. Our requirement is only two pair of jeans and four t-shirts, not more than that," the 40-year-old said here Tuesday at PowerLight A Village, an initiative by Garnier Men. "It's a great activity to do. I will

probably get on to that space where I can donate that kind of money to people. We often get clothes on shoots, they just get wasted. So it's better to give it off to people, auction it off and make money for charity," he added. Recently John featured in "I, Me Aur Main", but it was not received well at the box office. He will next be seen in "Shootout At Wadala".

Bollywood actor Nana Patekar has renewed his appeal to Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray to join hands. Replying to queries on India TV's show "Aap Ki Adalat", the actor said: "I told them 'Aap donon alag-alag mat raho. Saath me kuchh kaam karo, hamara bhala ho jayega' (Don't stay separately. Work together for the benefit of all of us)." He also said he considered the late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray as a father figure, but "he never gave me a ticket from his party". Patekar said he had an equally good relationship with both NCP chief Sharad Pawar and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, "the reason being that I never sought favours from either of them till date, otherwise friendship ends". On the film front, the actor has featured

in a key role in Ram Gopal Varma's "The Attacks of 26/11", a movie based on the 26/11 Mumbai terror strike. In the film, he plays a joint commissioner of police facing an inquiry over the attacks, while Sanjeev Jaiswal is seen as Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab, who was executed recently. Nana said he was happy to receive praises for his performance from an actor like megastar Amitabh Bachchan. "I am happy that a senior colleague has liked it. But coming back to the main point, this is not a movie. There are no songs and dances that will entertain. And that is one reason why I am a part of this film." "This film gives a message and is also an experience. There is nothing to make you happy after seeing the film. I am sure people will not clap after seeing it, and everyone will come out of the movie hall with their lips sealed," he said.

Southern sensation Asin Thottumkal who made it big in Bollywood after conquering south is going to tie the knot soon. It should be noted that four out of six movies in which she has acted has crossed the 100 crore club. The Ghajini star for a long time has not signed any film and currently keeping a low profile.

Asin To Tie The Knot

Asin is said to have found her true love. She is in a long distance relationship with a US citizen and news is that she will soon tie the knot and settle down in the US. The actress visits her beau in the US regularly to spend time with her boyfriend. The 27 yr old actress has not yet signed any films as she has some other plans in mind.

It is heard that marriage preparation is going on without any hype. Asin will not quit films but she will take up films if she likes any script. The actress wants to do more challenging female oriented movie than moving around the male leads. Asin is likely to take up Tamil films this year. She was lately seen in Khiladi 786 with Akshay Kumar.

"But I have always believed that the first powerful depiction or in a sense the birth of the so called 'Angry Young Man', was designed by Mehboob Saheb (Mehboob Khan) in 'Mother India', where the character Birju, played so brilliantly by Sunil Dutt, was depicted," he wrote. While "Zanjeer" featured Amitabh as inspector Vijay Khanna, "Namak Haraam" saw him as Vikram Maharaj.

At The Movies Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters (PG) * * * *Cursed!

By
Big budget movies sometimes call for more than one studio to produce. Paramount Films and MGM Studios wisely joined forces to make Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters. Stylish and campy in the extreme, this guilty pleasure is still winning over converts at the Metropolis Silver City and select Cineplex Odeon Theatres around B.C. Fairy tales can be fun if theyre made right. Somehow the producers of Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters successfully mined the fun of childhood and ramped up the pressure and danger. Cast in the pivotal roles of two wayward witch hunters are Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) and Gemma Arterton (Casino Royale). Early on we see some abandonment issues that befall this brother and sister as theyre left to fend for themselves in the dark forests of ancient yore. To make ends meet the pair use their skills and then some and become rather well versed in tangling (and defeating) evil witches. Reputation means a lot when hiring people for work and the family years later investigate nasty goings on in a village. Left to their own devices the pair encounter a monster witch played by Famke Janssen (Taken) whose as sinister as can be. With much of the village not really behind them this dynamic duo have truly an uphill battle as a murderous black witch has a very bad plan for them and the children of this small village. Wild and far-fetched, Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters is so ridiculous and over the top its a blast to sit through. Even the 3-D effects add to the ambience of this wacky tale of a couple of human warriors tangling with a host of evil women. Stupid dialogue and flambouyant special effects combine to make this whole fairy tale journey a pleasure to behold. Suspend your belief and a judgment for a while and you wont help but be caught up in the crazy shenanigans that unfold at a constant clip in this fiery tale of vengeance, destruction and the odd human sacrifice.

Irrfan Khan has said that he wishes that the Indian film industry was more respected internationally. The actor has appeared in the Academy Award-winning films Life of Pi and Slumdog Millionaire. He told The Times of India: "It is the audience's reaction that matters more to me. But yes, I wish there was a body which was concerned about the image of Indian film industry outside India. "I wish this body had enough credibility to earn our respect and it would not be about Paan Singh Tomar or Barfi. The selection of Oscar films

affects the whole industry and there is enough talent which is dying to get recognized and change the definition of entertainment. The sign of a good society is where talent is respected." Khan also criticized Indian actors who exaggerate the size of their roles in US films. "The audience is discerning. They know who is just creating a lot of noise and who has something substantial to talk about," he said. The star has previously said that the Bollywood obsession with the "100 crore tag" is bad for Indian cinema. He recently claimed that he only considers Hollywood films when he is offered something "special".

Asian British actress-singer Sofia Hayat went de-glam for her film "Naachle London", which released in India March 8, because she does not wish to get typecast in a glamourous avatar. "Glamorous roles are very easy. I got many glamorous roles and I turned down many because I don't want to be typecast. After this film, you will say she is not Sofia. She is a very simple and desi girl," the 28-year-old said in an interview. "I really enjoyed (myself) because it gives me the chance to do something that I have never done before," added

Sofia, who plays a mother in the film. Director by Neville Raschid, "Naachle London" released in Britain in February. Sofia says it is an international film, but at the heart, it is very much Indian. "The USP (unique selling point) of this film is that it is a film which has its head in Hollywood and heart in Bollywood, but made in London. In this film, you can see how Indians in London live, how is the culture and all," Sofia said. "It's a family, comedy and fun film with lots of love, romance and beautiful dancing," she added.

If you're a wine enthusiast, touring Kelowna is a must. There are more than 29 unique wineries offering tours and tastings for all pallets. Or take in the arts and culture, the heritage, the winter activities, the list goes on... and on... and on. Long before it hit its current prestige as Canadas wine-country Napa North, Kelowna B.C. was known as an affordable family vacation destination extraordinaire. About a four-hour drive from Vancouver (or fly into its international airport), this interior gem right on Lake Okanagan is straddled by the Cascade and Coast mountain ranges, making for gorgeous sightlines all round. Originally known as the land of peaches and beaches, it has, in more recent years, developed a reputation for its world-class wineries, golf courses and booming high-tech sector. The 100,000-person city offers ample opportunities for food-loving couples and families to bridge its old roots and new outlook. From the annual wine festival to a jaw-dropping beautiful apple orchard, artesian goat cheese fromagerie to pioneer village, nature walks to spa indulgences, Kelownas got something for everyone, whether youve left the kids with your folks, or theyre coming with you. Here are 7 compelling reasons to head into B.C.s interior pronto. The 2007 festival runs September 28 to October 7, with over 165 food- and wine- oriented events. From guided tastings to free-wheelin winery tours, the festival will appeal to newbies and advanced oenophiles alike. See www. thewinefestivals.com for details. Even if you miss the festival, the wineries still have much to offer in the way of tours and top-notch dining opportunities. Got kids? No worries. Summerhill Pyramid Winery and Mission Hill Family Estate winery both offer more than enough stimulation to keep kids interested. Mission Hill Family Estate meanwhile, also offers million-dollar views, as well as plenty of manicured lawn for kids to burn energy on, and a barrel room wine tasting that doesnt leave them out. My five-year-old enjoyed sniffing, swirling and sipping raspberry juice while the rest of us sampled the estates awardwinning wines. Spa-loving moms (dads, too) will bliss out during Beyond Wrapture Mind & Body Care Day Spa & Retreats vinotherapy treatment. This 75-minute body blitz includes a penetrating massage using shea butter and grapeseed oil, blended with your choice of red or white wine. Smells lovely, feels exquisite, and it boasts skin-pampering antioxidant properties, too. Beyond Wrapture is a six-location Okanagan spa chain owned by local Debra Pender. Set on or near some of the valleys top resorts, Penders spas were among the first to herald the regions rebirth as a luxury wine-golfand-spa destination. If youre travelling with kids, check out two very different, but equally appealing family resorts on opposite sides of 82-mile-long Okanagan Lake. The Manteo Resort Hotel & Villas (one-bedroom suite from $185 per night, www.manteo.com) offers swish suites and villas close to Kelownas downtown cultural district. Its also a short drive away from a bunch of championship-quality golf courses and estate wineries, making it the choice for discerning travellers looking for a new Kelowna experience. The resorts dockside restaurant (the mild weather makes for an extended alfresco dining season) offers topnotch regional cuisine and attentive service, as well as unexpected visitors like foraging geese. Lake Okanagan Resort (onebedroom suites from $199 per night, www.lakeokanagan.com), farther afield on 300 acres of the mountain side of the lake (known as Westbank), offers a more old-school Kelowna experience, with outdoorsy pursuits like horseback riding, and miles and miles of hiking trails. The restaurants food is unambitious but kid-pleasing, and the hot tub and pool offer panoramic views of the city. Concessions to the regions luxury pursuits include an on-site Beyond Wrapture spa and 9-hole golf course. Parked the kids with grandma and grandpa? Book yourself into one of the beach house-chic rooms in the new Eldorado Arms wing of the otherwise circa-1926 Hotel Eldorado (from $149 per night, www.eldoradokelowna. com). An onsite marina, wine store and spa cater to your every recreational need. The romantic Lakeside Dining Room has a casual-luxe coastal vibe and the best menu this side of paradise. Forget the cookie-cutter apple orchards youre used to hitting back home. KLO elevates the orchard to foodie haven. Kelowna Land & Orchard (www.kl-o.com) is the 150-acre home to awardwinning Raven Ridge Cidery and abfab gourmet restaurant, The Ridge. Founded in 1904 and owned by the Bullock family since 1942, the orchard produces a whopping four million pounds of fruit annually, yet its beauty and charm make one compelled to label it almost a boutique orchard if such a thing could exist. (If it could, it would exist in Kelowna, though.) Go there for the awesome hilltop view, to feed the free-roaming goats and to observe beautifully hued bantam chickens and roosters cavorting among the rows of apple trees. Sample the icewine-style cider made from the nectar of frozen apples, and we guarantee youll be buying a case to tote home with you. Continued Next Week

When we first looked at the 2013 Malibu Eco, we came away awed by its incredibly quiet ride, but were otherwise unimpressed. Despite its mild-hybrid powertrain, it lagged behind its hybrid rivals in fuel economy and driving enjoyment. However, a new four-cylinder engine is now available on the Malibu, and is focused on being quiet, providing solid power, and netting good fuel economy. These might seem like simple goals, but if met they can help make the Malibu stand out in a crowded playing field. This new 2.5L engine is available on the lowest trim Malibu, and is cheaper than the eAssist mild-hybrid Malibu Eco by about $3,000. While comparing that car to the other hybrids in its segment proved a lopsided affair, the Malibu 2.5L offers a closer headto-head comparison with other base models in the mid-size family sedan segment such as the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata and the all-new Nissan Altima. The Malibu 2.5L is looking to continue the reputation of its mild-hybrid model. That means the expectations are set with a bunch of standard features, a quiet cabin and a comfortable ride. The new engine also hopes to breathe life into the car, in terms of power and fuel efficiency. PLENTY OF POWER The additional power that the new engine makes is a clear advantage over its mid-sized rivals at least on paper. At 197-hp and 191 lbs-ft of torque, the Malibu beats out the power numbers made by the base Camry, Altima and Accord. Its just one pony shy of the Sonata and Optima twins, but bests them in torque. When driving, the car never feels out of breath, and will adequately pass slower vehicles on the highway. While family sedans arent known for blazing fast acceleration, Chevrolet says that the Malibu can hit 60 mph in about 8-seconds, which is on par with other sedans in the segment. The reason its not quicker is the extra weight the Malibu lugs around, ranging from 200 to 300 lbs more than many of its competitors. The car delivers its power smoothly, and briskly glides when pushed hard, rather than abruptly throwing passengers back in their seats. SOLID FUEL ECONOMY, BUT SHORT OF RIVALS That extra power (and weight) comes with a compromise. The EPA rates the Malibu 2.5L at 22/34/26 mpg city/ highway/combined. While this is a better rating than the old 2.4L in the 2012 Malibu, its slightly lower than the ratings of the Camry, Accord, Altima and Sonata. The plus side is that the Malibus fuel economy numbers are actually attainable, and done without a frustratingly unresponsive Eco mode. During city, highway and rural drives, our test car averaged closer to 30 mpg,

higher than the EPAs estimate. INTERIOR TAKES NO HITS Even as this is the base Malibu, the interior doesnt lose a single point in comparison to the Malibu Eco. There are plenty of additional interior options that help the car scale up from plastic-y to plushy, and the car is fantastically comfortable throughout. The Malibu also features Chevrolets MyLink infotainment system, which is responsive and fairly intuitive. MyLink uses a 7-inch touch-screen display, which uses the much more responsive capacitive touch-screen technology. MyLink allows drivers to download address books, stream audio over BlueTooth and supports the playback of MP3 files from Flash memory drives. Additionally, through a smart-phones cellular connection, MyLink integrates with Pandora, and Sticher internet radio. It is worth mentioning that there isnt a GPS navigation display for the Malibu, and if drivers need some assistance getting somewhere, they should turn to GMs OnStar service for help. The Malibus information cluster is also well laid out, and the HVAC controls are easy to use and right at hand. Those weary of new systems like MyFord Touch, need not worry here. Other features like a rear-view camera, lane-assist and parking sensors are all available as add-ons. The rear-view camera would prove to be the most useful add-on, since the Malibu feels so big, and reversing into a parking spot could use some guidance. DRIVING IMPRESSIONS The most important element of the Malibu comes in how quiet it is. Not only is the cabin nearly silent with little outside noise, but the new engine is

nearly undetectable until you get into the higher rev range. Helping make the car as serene as possible is the revised transmission. Work has gone into the six-speed automatic to help it shift quickly and smoothly. In comparison to other players in the segment, the Malibu is slightly heavier, and it feels that way when driving. Steering lacks feeling and the car itself is resistant to quick changes of direction. Handling-wise the Malibu feels less floaty than the Camry, and slightly more responsive than a Sonata. The Malibus weight is a bit more forgivable considering all the focus on safety that the car has. While the 2013 Malibu Eco has eight airbags as standard, this one is equipped with an additional two airbags. The car now features a Five-star NHTSA and Euro

NCAP rating. THE VERDICT What the Malibu does have to offer is a solid amount of power and an impressively smooth and quiet ride. Its also versatile, and can be optioned up to a more luxurious style. Undoubtedly an improvement over the previous Bu, its not the massive leap forward most of the competition has made with their latest products. A solid family sedan, the 2.5L engine still doesnt offer enough of anything to help the Malibu jump anywhere past mid-pack in the segment. Rivals can boast the best price, the best fuel economy, the best reliability or the best style. The Malibu, however, is missing a unique identity to help it stand out, though perhaps the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine option coming this fall will help solve that.

Here is a plan to help you shape up in 2013...

This diet plan can help you lose all the unwanted flab. The diet involves cutting out 'toxic' foods that encourage the body to store fat - including alcohol, sugar and processed foods. Meals on James's diet plan are full of fish, lean meat - including turkey and chicken - and fresh, preferably organic vegetables. This diet works on the principle that your body's natural state is lean and fit, not sluggish and fat. But processed foods and drinks and excess sugar pollute the body, causing fat to cling to the hips, thighs, bum and tummy. However, as soon as you stop doing the wrong thing, your body responds very quickly, and you'll get lean fast. But you have to believe you can do it. It doesn't matter how often you have failed in the past. What matters now is focusing on what you want and taking action." Food rules make these changes to your diet to lose weight and get a flat tummy fast! 1. Cut the C.R.A.P: Avoid the four main food groups that cause fat to cling to our bodies: caffeine, refined sugar, alcohol and processed foods. 2. But allow yourself a weekly cheat meal. Once a week, enjoy an indulgent meal of whatever you fancy, from creamy pasta to a slice of chocolate cake with cream. As long as you're eating clean, healthy food the rest of the time, an occasional high-fat treat actually speeds up your metabolism. 3. Take fish oil supplements: They burn fat and supply essential fatty acids. 4. Always have breakfast: Eat within one hour of waking up. If you don't have time for a proper breakfast, just grab a piece of fruit and a few nuts. 5. Don't eat after 8pm: Eating a large meal in the evening when your body is slowing down or sleeping is a bad idea for your digestion and weight. Five food swaps for flat Abs 1.Bad croissants: Full of fat, sugar and no goodness. 2. Milk: Most non-organic milk is filled with hormones 3. Standard yoghurt: Most are full of sugar 4. Margarine: Full of chemicals 5. Beer: High sugar and calories Better wholemeal bread: Fibre is good for digestion Organic milk: It's chemical-free Organic yoghurt It's free from pesticides Olive oil spread: Full of essential fatty acids Organic cider: Less alcohol and calories. Best spelt bread: No tummy-bloating gluten Organic almond milk: Doesn't contain lactose that can cause bloating Organic full-fat yoghurt: Makes you feel full and is less sugary than low-fat options Organic butter: Natural and additive free Good red wine: Grape skin contains resveratrol, a great antioxidant Tummy toning moves Exercise smarter, not harder. So, if you are trying to lose weight, don't go mad with exercise - get more out of less. These moves can help you get a flatter tummy as they reduce levels of stress hormones in the body, which encourage fat around your middle. Breathing squat - Go slow and low and repeat 10 times - Stand with feet shoulder width apart, arms out and parallel to floor - Inhale through the nose, then lower your bottom down as far as is still comfortable while exhaling. Pause for a few seconds, then inhale as you come up - Energy push Great for digestion breathe slowly and repeat 20 times - Take a comfortable stance with feet shoulder width apart, arms in front of you, palms facing down - Inhale and pull hands back towards your shoulders - Exhale, pushing your arms back out to starting position - Leg tuck. Great for lower abs - repeat 10 times - Lie back, feet on floor, knees bent. Inhale then bring knees into your chest as you exhale - Inhale again as you return your feet to the floor Your food plan Stick to this eating plan for two weeks to start your weight loss. It's best to begin on a weekend, when you have more time to get everything ready. Plus, you won't feel so stressed or rushed, which means you'll be less likely to succumb to a mid-afternoon chocolate bar. Day 1 Breakfast: Omelette made with three egg whites and filled with 75g chopped mixed peppers and a handful of spinach Mid-morning snack: 100g chicken with red pepper, sliced Lunch: One grilled chicken breast, mixed salad leaves, red peppers, green beans and tbsp olive oil Mid-afternoon snack: 100g turkey breast with cucumber, sliced Dinner: 100g grilled chicken breast with steamed broccoli Day 2 Breakfast: Baked chicken breast with a handful of stir-fried kale Mid-morning snack: 100g turkey breast and green pepper, sliced Lunch: Baked fillet with mixed green salad, with tbsp olive oil Mid-afternoon snack: 100g turkey breast with 75g steamed broccoli Dinner: One salmon steak with chopped dill and steamed green beans Day 3 Breakfast: 100g smoked salmon, plus spinach Mid-morning snack: 100g chicken breast with yellow pepper, sliced Lunch: One grilled chicken breast with garden salad and tbsp olive oil Mid-afternoon snack: 100g turkey slices with avocado Dinner: One grilled lamb steak (or two cutlets); steamed broccoli and spinach

Easy Ways To Get More Fruits And Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy eating plan. But is getting enough sometimes a challenge? Not any more. Almost all fruits and vegetables are low in the things you dont want (like sodium, calories and fat) but still pack a powerful punch of nutrients, vitamins and fibre. Even if you have picky eaters to feed, these seven surefire tips will help you add more of the good stuff to your meals and snacks without even trying. Try something new. If youre bored with your fruits and veggies, chances are youre not getting enough variety. Next time you go grocery shopping, try fruits or vegetables youve never had before; for example, papaya, lychee, guava, bamboo shoots and rapini. Save time with frozen or canned. While fresh is best, canned or frozen fruits and vegetables are good alternatives. Be sure you have some handy for when youre short on time. And while they have about the same nutritional value as fresh, check the label to ensure that theres no sugar or syrup added (for canned fruits) and that veggies have no salt added. Soup it up! Soups are a great way to get more veggies into your diet and your kids tummies. Puree squash, broccoli, carrots, peppers or just about any vegetable you can think of and add them to your favourite soup recipe. But dont stop there: Find and try recipes for fruity soups that use melon or apple. Add zing to tomato sauce or chili. Another way to get more vegetables into the mouths of picky eaters is by grating carrots, broccoli, mushrooms or zucchini into their favourite tomato sauce or chili. Chances are they wont even notice. But even if youre not trying to sneak them in, adding vegetables to homemade or storebought sauce will add flavour and nutrients. Keep healthy snacks within reach. Keep a bowl of fresh fruit, fruit salad, cut up veggies or pre-packaged baby carrots, snow peas or celery sticks on the most visible shelf in your refrigerator. The next time you or a family member heads to the fridge for munchies, youll have a no-fuss, nomess snack waiting. Mix em up. Choosing fruits and vegetables of different colours is a good way to reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke. So mix up dark green, orange and red items to make a colourful salad. But dont be afraid to mix fruits with vegetables; for example, try a spinach salad with orange slices and strawberries. Keep it smooth and tasty. Get one or two servings of fruit early in the day by having a smoothie for breakfast. You can use just about any fruit you want for a fast and easy way to start the day. The Dietitians of Canada recommend you whirl up the following in a blender: 125 ml of milk or orange juice 175 ml of flavoured yogurt 125 ml of fruit (whatever you have on hand) You can also add a few ice cubes or use frozen fruit. Enjoy!

Menopause Alert: How To Avoid Osteoporosis

When a woman reaches menopause, the level of estrogen production in her ovaries goes down.
make your bones and muscles stronger and also help to prevent bone loss. It also helps you stay active, fit and mobile. Opt for weight-bearing exercises to prevent osteoporosis. Try simple weight-bearing exercises like walking, jogging, playing tennis and dancing. Besides these, try strength and balance exercises to prevent falls and hence decrease your chances of getting injured. Getting enough calcium throughout your life helps to build and keep strong bones. Doctors usually recommend 1,000 mg (milligrams) of calcium each day for adults who have a low-to-average risk of developing osteoporosis. For those at high risk of developing osteoporosis, such as post-menopausal women, the dose increases up to 1,500 mg each day. Excellent sources of calcium are milk and dairy products (low-fat versions are recommended), fish with bones like salmon and sardines, dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, fenugreek etc, broccoli, calcium-fortified cereals, etc Due to the reduced estrogen production, a woman at menopause has high chances of developing bone problems like osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones. Due to the weakening of bones, the chances of unexpected fractures are generally much higher. In simple terms, osteoporosis means "porous bone." It results in an increased loss of bone mass and strength. Osteoporosis often progresses without any symptoms or pain. Today, we have Ms. Sunita Pathania Sr. Registered Dietician and Diabetes Educator, Healthy Living Diet Clinic, Mumbai, sharing some quick tips on how women can prevent osteoporosis during menopause. Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes. Exercising everyday will Your body needs vitamin D in order to absorb calcium. In order to get adequate quota of vitamin D to your body, you should get a minimum of 20 minutes of sunlight - says Ms. Sunita. Besides bathing in the sun, opt for food products like eggs, fatty fish like salmon, cereal and milk fortified with vitamin D. Women aged between 51 to 70 years should have at least 400-800 IU of vitamin D daily. More than 2,000 IU of vitamin D each day is not recommended because it may harm your kidneys and even lower bone mass. How To Determine Your Face Shape

Almost everything you read in a magazine or anywhere else, asks you to determine your face shape in order to determine which hair style looks good on you, which colors, etc. For the longest time, I couldnt figure out my face shape no matter how hard I tried! I wasnt sure if it was oval or diamond shaped, so I decided to figure out exactly what each face shape entitled. So here is a little glossary on the different type of face shapes. Hope it helps.

Oval Face Shape

Circular shaped. Length is approx equal to width.

Oblong face shape

Strong and broad forehead with angular jaw.

Heart face shape

Forehead and jawline are narrow with wide and high cheekbones. Triangular face shape

Curvilinear shape. Length is equal to one and a half times width, with forehead and jaw the same width. So think of the oval face shape as an egg.

Wide at the forehead and cheekbones, narrow at the jawline. Face is longer than it is wide with a long straight cheek line.

Round face shape

Diamond face shape

Forehead and cheekbones are narrow with a wide jawline.

Square face shape

There is a right way to facial cleansing so your skin not only removes the dirt it accumulates but also helps keep clean
Gone are the days when cleaning the face was just about splashing water and using a face wash. Here's a mini to-do list to washing your face just right. 1. Take off your makeup: Yes, this is rule number one. Washing a caked up face does no good. Use a makeup remover, baby oil or an oil-based cream to take off that makeup from your face. 2. Choosing the right product for your skin: It is important that you use the right products depending on your skin type. If you have normal skin, you have the liberty to experiment with any product, but for a sensitive skin, use something that is gentle and does not bring about any breakouts. 3. Take time: Moisten your face with lukewarm water (nothing too warm, or else it can make the skin dry and also harm the skin). Then use a cleanser that suits your skin type to clean the face. Take cleanser on your fingers and rub gently in a circular motion all over your face, going your way up and into the hairline and also down past your jawline. 4. Wash it right: Washing the face more than once or twice can lead to irritation of the skin. If you're someone who sweats a lot, then maybe you can wash your face when you feel too much grime accumulation, also when you feel uncomfortable (then again don't overdo it). Even after a rigorous workout session, washing the face is recommended. Otherwise, no matter what skin type you be, stick to washing the face just twice, in the morning and before you sleep at night.

Maha Shivratri, which literally translates to great night of Shiva is a Hindu festival largely celebrated in India and all over the world. The festival is celebrated on the new moon day in the month of Maagha according to the Hindu calendar. The day is celebrated to venerate Lord Shiva, an important deity in Hindu culture. There are many mythological legends associated with this day. According to a popular legend, when a hunter could not find anything to kill for his food in a forest, he waited on the branch of a Woodapple tree. In order to attract deer, he started throwing the leaves of the tree on the ground, unaware that there was a Shiva Lingam beneath the tree. Pleased with the Woodapple leaves and the patience of the hunter, it is believed that Lord Shiva appeared in front of the hunter and blessed him with wisdom. From that day onwards, the hunter stopped eating meat. Another legend has it that after the Earth was faced with an imminent destruction, Goddess Parvati pledged with Lord Shiva to save the world. Pleased with her prayers, Lord Shiva agreed to save the world on the pretext that the people of the Earth would have to worship him with dedication and passion. From that day onwards, the night came to be known as Maha Shivratri and people began worshipping Shiva with a great enthusiasm. Some folklore also consider this to

Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival which is celebrated by people following Hinduism in India. People often fast on the night of Shivratri and sing hymns and praises in the name of Lord Shiva. Hindu temples across the country are decorated with lights and colorful decorations and people can

It is believed that the people who fast on this night and offer prayers to Lord Shiva bring good luck into their life. The most popular Maha Shivratri celebrations take place in Ujjain, believed to be the place of residence of Lord Shiva. Large processions are carried out throughout the city, with people thronging the streets to catch a glimpse of the revered idol of Lord Shiva. A Festival Significant for Women : Shivratri is considered especially auspicious for women. Married women pray for the well being of their husbands and sons, while unmarried women pray Gujrati Kadhi

for an ideal husband like Shiva, who is the spouse of Kali, Parvati and Durga. But generally it is believed that anyone who utters the name of Shiva during Shivratri with pure devotion is freed from all sins. He or she reaches the abode of Shiva and is liberated from the cycle of birth and death. Shiva Rituals: On the day of Shivratri, a three-tiered platform is built around a fire. The topmost plank represents 'swargaloka' (heaven), the middle one 'antarikshaloka' (space) and the bottom one 'bhuloka' (earth). Eleven 'kalash' or urns, are kept on the 'swargaloka' plank symbolizing the 11 manifestations of the 'Rudra' or destructive Shiva. These are decorated with bael the leaves and mango atop a coconut representing the head of Shiva. The uncut shank of the coconut symbolizes his tangled hair and the three spots on the fruit Shiva's three eyes. Bathing the Phallus: The phallus symbol representing Shiva is called the lingam. It is usually made of granite, soapstone, quartz, marble or metal. Devotees worship the lingam throughout the night. It is bathed every three hours. Then the 5 foods of immortality - milk, ghee, curd, honey and sugar are placed before the lingam. Datura fruit and flower, though poisonous, are believed to be sacred to Shiva and thus offered to him. "Om Namah Shivaya!": All through the day the devotees keep severe fast, chant the sacred Panchakshara mantra "Om Namah Shivaya", make offerings of flowers and incense to the Lord amidst ringing of temple bells. They maintain long vigils during the night, keeping awake to listen to stories, hymns and songs. The fast is broken only the next morning, after the nightlong worship.

On paper, where hockey is played by fantasy drafters and poolies, the San Jose Sharks lineup of weapons is quite deep enough to get the full attention of a team that is still drawing names out of a hat to figure out who plays on defence and with whom. On the ice, it hasnt always worked out that way. A squad that sprinted out of the gate to seven wins in a row just as astonishingly lost nine of its next 10, somehow squandering, in the meantime, all that offensive punch and scraping the bottom of the National Hockey Leagues goals-for barrel. Its somewhere in that locker-room, Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. Obviously, if we had the ability to do it early and start the way we did, its there. Its like any other injury: at the end of the day, the player and the staff talk it over, and he might feel hes 100% and hes ready to go or sometimes hes not 100% but he feels he can play through it But things change over time, teams get their systems in place, guys get their legs going again, and there is going to be some catch-up thats done. So naturally, two guys who hadnt a goal between them this season, Scott Gomez and Adam Burish, put the first two past Cory Schneider in the Vancouver Canucks net Tuesday night, and as little resistance as the home side was putting up at that point, who knew how many more might end up behind Schneider if the Thorntons, Marleaus, Pavelski, and Coutures rolled up their sleeves and got to work. The Canucks, meanwhile, were working through the full range of permutations and combinations on their blue-line, doing the same faintly frenetic tap dance that they seem destined to be doing until Kevin Bieksa

Canucks Need To Get Back On The Right Track With Or Without Kevin Bieksa

If he returns too soon, as it appears he did against L.A., and the groin keeps flaring up again and again, as groins are wont to do, then the Vancouver blue-line is going to be a daily grabbag of mix-em, match-em hunches and more experimentation. First thing that comes to mind is [losing a] right-handed defenceman, its a lot easier playing a right-hander and a left-hander together, for those D-to-D passes, head coach Alain Vigneault acknowledged. The competitiveness he brings on a nightly basis, hes a strong, aggressive, tough player to play against, he moves the puck well and defends well, so hes been one of our most consistent defencemen. He does, however, dispute the notion that Bieksa came back too soon, or that he could have done more harm to himself by playing Saturday. Its like any other injury: at the end of the day, the player and the staff talk it over, and he might feel hes 100% and hes ready to go or sometimes hes not 100% but he feels he can play through it and you never know how its going to turn out, Vigneault said. In Kevins case he was fine [against L.A.], he played real well, he was quick, he was strong one on one, and then towards the end of the game, one hit, one push, he felt it again, finished that game, didnt think anything of it. Next morning, got up, it felt stiff. Despite four losses in their last five outings, and the tenuousness of their hold on the Northwest Division lead, it is too early to say the Canucks have lost their way, because (a) only the Detroit game was a real stinker, and (b) theres pretty much a game every second night, and in the mood-swingy, what-haveyou-done-for-me-lately environment of a shortened season, redemption may be just around the next bend. The next bend arrives in Columbus on Thursday, then weaves through Minnesota and back to Columbus, one of those road trips the scribes wont be fighting over but the Canucks cant afford to be picky. With or without Bieksa, and Ballard, whichever names come out of the hat will have to pair up, two by two, and weather this little squall. And hope it doesnt blow up into something bigger.

returns. Its not often in his career that the high-risk, high-reward Bieksa has been referred to as the missing piece that could really settle things down in the Canucks back end. But the 31-year-old rearguards value to the team has never been more sharply defined than through this last stretch of five games, four of which he has missed with groin problems. The one he played, the Canucks beat the Stanley Cup champion L.A. Kings, convincingly. The four he missed in Detroit, at home to Phoenix, in Calgary, and this one against San Jose they lost by an aggregate score of 19-9. Tuesday night, in between outbreaks of high-speed pond hockey that included some really breathtaking sequences by the Canucks, a game that could have ended in a lopsided win for either team left both defences panting, and offered

a strong case for the good old tie, in which nothing is settled but both teams and the fans, too leave happy. Instead, as has so often been the case, the Canucks couldnt apply the coup de grace, either in regulation time or the extra five minutes, and ended up losing 3-2 in a shootout, Couture finishing it off. The Canucks showed plenty of moxie and speed, lots of effort, and no doubt deserved better after battling back from 0-2 down to tie it on goals by Henrik Sedin and Jannik Hansen. Defensively, too, it was a gritty effort by the home team, after starting without Bieksa, again, and then losing the beleaguered Keith Ballard to a charley horse in the third period, and still making it to the finish line. Things almost got considerably scarier in the first period when Chris Tanev, the lone remaining right-hand-shooting defenceman in Bieksas absence, took a Michal Handzus shot off the outside of the right knee while trying to clean up a bad turnover by his defence partner of the moment, Alex Edler. But after a quick trip to the dressing room, he returned and, though he looked all-in at times as the game wore on, he and Edler and Dan Hamhuis and Jason Garrison with an occasional shift from Cam Barker withstood the Sharks incursions well enough. But whos kidding whom? The healthier Bieksa returns, the better for the team as long as he comes back to stay.

Vancouver Canucks' Mason Raymond right, and San Jose Sharks' Joe Pavelski wait for linesman Ryan Galloway to drop the puck as they face off during the first period.

Canucks Defenceman Keith Ballard Denies He Asked To Be Traded

Canucks defenceman Keith Ballard says he doesnt want out of Vancouver. Ballards future with the club came into question after his agent told a Vancouver radio station he wanted to talk to Canucks general manager Mike Gillis about the blue-liners situation. No way did I say I want to be traded, Ballard said Tuesday after Vancouvers morning skate in preparation for a game against the San Jose Sharks. The 30-year-old American returned to the Vancouver lineup after sitting out the previous two games as a healthy scratch. He said his agent Ben Hankinson spoke to assistant general manager Laurence Gilman. But the defenceman declined to elaborate on the specifics of the discussion. Ballard did not dispute coach Alain Vigneaults decision to sit him out. When you look at those last two games, I didnt play well enough, said Ballard. Before being scratched, Ballard saw regular duty as a top-six defenceman. But he has battled to stay in the lineup at times during his three seasons with Vancouver. During the Canucks run to the Stanley Cup final in 2010-11, he suited up for only four playoff games. Ballard, who makes $4.2-million a year and has two years left on his contract, has been criticized for minimal production in Vancouver. But he hasnt had the same offensive role with the Canucks hes had in the past with other teams. The situation Im in, the role Im in, thats the way it goes, said Ballard. Its up to me to make the best of it. Ballard got an opportunity to play as defenceman Kevin Bieksa remained out of the lineup with a groin injury. Vigneault said Ballard was scratched the previous two games because he had not played well in three of the previous four contests.

The Canucks coach also wanted to take a look at Andrew Alberts and Cam Barker, who haven been scratched for most games this season.

Alberts, a defensive defenceman, was a healthy scratch again Tuesday as Vigneault sought to capitalize on Ballards better puck-moving ability.

The Fiji Football Association (FFA) has come a long way in terms of development. Last week, Fiji FA during its special general meeting in Nadi has made another important decision in the development of soccer in the country following their decision to accommodate eight teams in the Super Premier Division in the 2013- 2014 season which begins in November. With just over one year under his presidency, Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel and his executives have done a lot. This is something that will help us move in a new direction, Patel said. The Fiji FA, districts, the sponsors and football in general in Fiji will benefit. The Super Eight motion has been passed and special congress has rectified it and there will be automatic

promotion/ relegation from the last team once the eight team format comes into place. The bottom two teams from this season in the Fiji Sun/GP Batteries National Football League will be relegated to the premier division. This is something which is beneficial to premier districts to climb up the ladder. But the option is opened for the Premier districts if they feel if they dont want to get promoted. It happened before to Nadogo, they didnt want to be in the Super Premier then the last team of the Super Premier division stays and vice versa, Patel said. Eight team formats will come in place after the National League series 2012/2013. While Ba, Nadi and Labasa hold

top three positions in the NFL points table, the bottom placed teams, Tavua, Nadroga and Savusavu will be out to avoid a relegation to the Premier Division this season and to secure a top eight spot to play in the two major tournaments being the Vodafone Fiji FACT and the Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants tournament. held at Nadis Prince Charles Park in June. The first round will be played at ANZ Stadium in Suva and final rounds will be played at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. It will also be a tough competition for the Super Premier teams to qualify for the Vodafone Fiji FACT. Only the top eight teams will qualify for the FACT in June.
