WORKSHOP #1: PRINT.

INTRO
ACTIVITY 1 12mins ACTIVITY 2 6mins ACTIVITY 3 15mins CONCLUSION 5mins 40MINS

INTRO [2 minutes]
INTRODUCE OURSELVES: Tell students names of all crew and that they are being filmed give the cameras a wave. Tell them not to be afraid of stating their opinion as there is no right or wrong answers and everyones is welcome, and if any point they dont want to take part that is fine. INTRODUCE THEME: Self Image. Tell students that Self image is the idea we have about how ourselves look. INTRODUCE WORKSHOP: Tell students that in this first workshop we shall be looking into body image in print media, particularly magazines and advertisements like posters and leaflets. We will be looking at how these make fake ideals of the way that we should look. But first..

ACTIVITY 1: MAKE A MAGAZINE COVER. [12 minutes]

Get students to arrange themselves in suitably sized groups (2-4) and explain that we want them to use the cut-outs supplied and choice of stories to make a magazine cover one that they think is professional and they would be interested in reading. To go around class and interview groups [with camera]: Why do you think you chose this main story? Why do you think you chose this image? Why do you think you highlighted these other stories/articles? Conclude by asking to share each others covers and summarising the similarities and differences between them. Complement them on their work.

ACTIVITY 2: PHOTO-MANIPULATION VIDEO [6 minutes]

Introduce the students to next activity by telling them we want to show them how nearly all photos in magazines and advertisements are made. Ask students if they have seen Doves video campaign called Evolution that was a released back in 2006? - role video [1min] -

Ask the following questions and clarify with bracketed answers: What happened in the video/what did you see? (Hours of preparation, professional makeup application, lighting, and computer manipulation)

What do you think is the films message? (No model is really as perfect as she appears in ads. Magazine, TV, and billboard images create a false idea of what we should look like, and this false advertising can make people feel bad if they don't look like that) Why do you think advertisers and magazines might want to make people feel bad about their appearance? (To make their products look better/to draw attention or convince audiences of a particular point of view. By making models look better it makes us feel worse, and therefore we want to buy their product or listen to their advice to be like that) How do you feel about advertisers telling us what we should look like? Do you think it is a good or bad thing? (Discuss)

ACTIVITY 3: MAGAZINE REVIEW [15 minutes]

Tell the students that we now want them to look for these aspects for themselves in magazines. In pairs get them to pick several magazines supplied and using sticky notes provided find images that advertise a beautiful look and stick notes to them about the following: Who created the ad/photo? (The advertiser, the magazine, etc.) What is the purpose of the ad/photo? (How will it make money, to get attention for its creator, to convince audiences of a particular point of view, etc.) How does this influence the content and how its communicated? (What does the creator do to achieve their purpose? i.e. makes models perfect to make us feel bad and their products/services better. What techniques does the ad/photo use to do this? How has the image been manipulated? (I.e. lighting, makeup, camera angle, photo manipulation, etc.) To ask in interviews? How do these images make you feel, based on how similar or different you are from the people portrayed in them?

CONCLUSION [5 minutes]
Class summary and discussion on what we found. What is the expectation of Print media towards body shape? What body shapes are shown more positively or negatively than others? What conclusions might audiences draw based on these facts? Tell students that even though these magazine images try to tell people what the ideal weight or body type is, the ideal body weight or type for each of them is already programmed into their genes. As long as they stay fit by eating healthy and exercising they will always achieve more. The reason models are so unrealistically good looking is because they are unrealistic and not a true representation of the majority of everyday people like us.
