Time: 2 hours instructor: Anirban Bhattacharya

Max. Marks: 30

Note: Answer ALL questions in sequence. Draw necessary sketches in support of your answer. Marking of ports and use of standard symbols are mandatory everywhere. D o a n s w e r a l l artsoauestioninone.lcfidataineeded. 1. Why service unit is needed in every pneumatic system? Draw detailed and simplified symbol of pneumatic service unit. Mention the functions of an air dryer. (1+1+1)
2. What is the function of direction control valves? What is the difference between poppet valve and slide valves? Explain double cup formation mechanism for leak proofing in the pneumatic cylinders. With the help of schematic diagram explain the working of m u l t i p o s i t i o n c y l i n d e r . ( 1 . 5 + 2 + 1 . 5 + 2 ) 3. Draw the symbols of the following valves: (marking of the ports are mandatory) a)3/ 2 way, single pilot, normally open valve b)3/2 way roller lever valve, internal pilot, normally closed c)4/2 way pilot assisted solenoid actuated solenoid reset direction control valve (normal cross flow) d)5/2 way double pilot control, double manual override direction control valve (flow 1 - 4, 2 - 3) e)5/3 way spring centered (normally closed) pilot actuated pilot reset direction control valve (flow 1 -2, 4 --> 5) (1X5) 4. What is the difference between a pressure relief valve and a pressure sequence valve? Draw the standard pneumatic symbols for both of them. (1+2) 5. During production of badges from sheet metal in a stamping die press, the double acting cylinder is used. The forward stroke of the cylinder is triggered by means of a push button. The return stroke is not initiated until the forward end position has been acknowledged and the pressure in the piston area has reached 4.5 bar. After this, the cylinder is to be held in this position for five seconds before it retracts to ensure consistent quality. Design and draw a p n e u m a t i c c i r c u i t f o r t h i s t a s k . ( 4 ) 6. The arriving work pieces are to be distributed to three different conveyors by means of a transfer station. The distances of the three stations are as follows: Station A 200rnm, Station B - 100= and Station C Oa= . Shifting to the desired positions is initiated by three different push buttons S1, 52, S3 respectively. Using relay based control, design and d r a w a n e l e c t r o - p n e u m a t i c c i r c u i t f o r t h i s operation. (4) 7. The gradual (controllable) clamping of a work piece during end milling operation is initiated by simultaneous pressing of two push buttons. Clamping will be possible only when the work piece has been inserted. A paddle operated button causes quick unclamping. Design and draw a pneumatic circuit keeping in view that unclamping should not be possible during milling operation to avoid accidents. (4)
