Project Management

Construction of Marine Tank Farm

Group-7 Nipun Sachdeva Puja Bachhuka Rohit Dayma Soma Sekhar Rao Tania

Scope of the Project

Through this study of project on construction of marine tank farm in Maharashtra, we intend to learn all the operational concepts involved for a successful completion of a construction project. Initially, we would form a project organization structure so that there is clear demarcation between the roles and responsibilities which is very important to avoid conflicts. Next we would do WBS(work breakdown structure) . it defines and groups a projects discrete work elements in a way that helps organize and define the total work scope of the project. We would also make a precedence table to define the correct estimation of time involved. This would also help in making Gantt chart and network diagram also. We would then try performing PERT technique which is the tool used to schedule, organize, and coordinate tasks within a project and also we will perform critical path method to confirm the results. We will also try to find in our project about the risk involved In the end we would state our conclusion and key findings.

Goal of the project:

The goal of the project can be described below:

This project envisages studying the construction of a marine tank farm near the port of NHAVA SHEVA (JNPT) which will cater to the numerous chemical/ petrochemical industries in the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) as also to the two PSU refineries (BPCL and HPCL) located at Mumbai.

The Marine Tank Farm would be spread over an area of 5acres and have a cargo capacity of 100000 kilolitres with a receiving/ discharging capacity of 200 kilolitres per hour (pumping rate). The tanks farm will be designed to store hazardous liquid cargo (Class-A Storage) and will conform to best-in-class safety standards.

From the project we seek to have an understanding of the entire project which was undertaken, the various activities of the project, the sequence in which these activities will be undertaken.

We would also look into the various people involved in the project, their roles and responsibilities and how the work was undertaken by each of them.

Deliverables of the project

The project seeks to deliver the following: The project helps us in understanding the entire construction of a Marine Tank Farm, from the beginning to how the work was completed. The project will deliver us the benefits in understanding what all activities are involved in such construction, the inputs required, the people involved in terms of the capacity that need to be created. The project is delivering a unique benefit as it will help in storing hazardous liquid cargo, for the best safety possibilities.

Detailed Description of the Project

Trade is an important facet in the economic development of any nation. The ASSOCHAM STUDY ON PETROLEUM TRADE for the period FY 1999-00 to 2006-07 has found that petroleum products exported by India have been growing at a whopping rate of 73 per cent

for last three years with the value of oil exports expected to surpass its imports in next six years. Petroleum is emerging as the largest foreign exchange sector in India with 16.2 per cent share petroleum exports are expected to exceed US$ 20 billion in FY07. To facilitate this trade, it is essential to supplement our ports with custom-bonded storage warehouses to reduce ship turnaround time and help exporters reduce inventories at their manufacturing locations thus reducing transaction cost. This project envisages constructing a marine tank farm near the port of NHAVA SHEVA (JNPT) which will cater to the numerous chemical/ petrochemical industries in the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) as also to the two PSU refineries (BPCL and HPCL) located at Mumbai. The tank farm shall have an access from NH4B which is a spur from NH 4 which links four of the 10 most populous Indian cities - Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Chennai. NH 4 constitutes roughly 90% of the Golden Quadrilateral's Mumbai-Chennai segment and hence the tank farm is strategically connected to highly industrialized cities. The tank farm is also in proximity to Mumbai, the financial hub of India and caters to JNPT which is spread over 10 square kilometres (2,500 acres) handling bulk consignments of 7.88 million tons per annum. The port handles 65% of India's container traffic has an average berthing period of 37 hours which is considered very long. Hence the tank farm is expected to cater to high business volumes.

Work Breakdown Structure (WBS): Work breakdown structure (WBS), in project management is a deliverable oriented hierarchical decomposition of a project work into smaller components to be executed by the project team to accomplish the project objectives and create the required deliverables. It defines and groups a project's discrete work elements in a way that helps organize and define the total work scope of the project
