B. Motivation 1. Review Last meeting, we discussed perimeter. As a review, given the length of a rectangle which is 12cm and width is 4cm, find its perimeter. What formula are we going to use? P= 2(L+W), P= S1+S2+S3+S4 or P= 2L+2W What is the answer? P= 32cm Very good! 2. Presentation Posting the figure on the board.

3. Discussion Answers may vary What do you mean by area? The number of square units which covers the surface is called area. The area of any two dimensional figure can be determined by imagining its surface completely filled with square regions called square units. A square which side is one unit long has an area of one square unit. The square centimetre is a standard unit of area.

How many rows are there? How many squares in each row? Count the numbers of squares. How many squares are there in the diagram? Aside from counting the number of squares inside the rectangle, what are we going to do with 4 and 7 to get 28? Very good! What do we call to the longer side of a rectangle? How about the shorter side? So, what do you think is the formula for the area of a rectangle? What is the area of the court? What is the unit used? Example #2. Given: A= 18cm L= 6cm W= ?

The group who will first raise their board with the correct answer will get 2 points. The remaining group who get the same answer will get only 1 point.
