KNOWING
It was my privilege to spend a little time with Byron this week as he taught eager students the art of painting seascapes. I missed most of the classes due to the seasonal joy of a cold that followed its usual migration into my chest. But what little wisdom I captured excited me not only about the joy and importance of artistic expression but its evidence of God the source of all creation and creative expression. At one point in the class it dawned on me that Byrons gifted ability to capture not only the beauty of the sea but its movement, power and fluid colors was not just because he had honed brush techniques or mastered composition but because he knew the anatomy of the wave. He understood and had intimate knowledge of the life and dynamic of the ocean gleaned from many hours of observation. His paintings come alive because he is able to articulate not only the observable but the animate power of the divine in all things created. John writes, Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:7,8. God can be viewed in many ways but the most intimate knowledge of Him reveals that He is love. I love the quirky irony in the beginning of the story of redemption that is seen in Genesis. Sin is discovered when God is walking in the garden in the cool of the evening and Adam and Eve hide. Knowledge of good and evil stripped them of intimacy with a God who walked among them. A hint of its importance is revisited in chapter 5 when we are told of Enoch who walked with God was no more because God took him away (v.24). Mysterious yes but certainly a reminder that God desires for His creation to walk with Him to know Him to love and to be loved! Knowing God will always be best understood in the cleft of the rock!
