Installation:
Pipe sections are water repellent, but cartons are not designed for outside storage. Techton 1200 can be used outdoors but will require the use of a suitable weatherproofing system. Cuts easily with a serrated knife. Stagger half-sections and/or butt the one piece sections firmly together. Techton 1200 is designed for operating temperatures from below ambient to 1200F (650C). During initial start-up, controlled binder decomposition will occur at the inside surface of the insulation when the internal temperature of the insulation exceeds 450F (232C). Provide adequate ventilation to prevent odour and smoke. For satisfactory performance, properly installed protective vapor retarders or barriers should be used on sub-ambient temperature applications to reduce movement of moisture through or around the insulation to the colder surface. Wire insulation to pipe and fix the metal jacketing with metal bands or sheet metal screws. Position metal bands at butt joint overlaps and in between joints to secure jacket.
Packaging: The Packaging Standards Charts below identify the number of linear feet per carton. All Techton 1200 sections are cut in 3.28 foot lengths, and the letters represent the carton size. Sizes ABOVE the bold line on each chart are normally one piece hinged. Sizes BELOW the bold line on each chart are normally two-piece. Toxicological Information:
Acute Toxicity: Coarse fibers and dust from mineral wool products can cause temporary mechanical irritation (itching, redness) of the skin, and of the mucous membranes in the eyes and in the upper respiratory tract (nose and throat). The itching and possible inflammation are a mechanical reaction to dust and coarse fibers (of more than about 5 m in diameter), and are not damaging in the way chemical irritants may be. They generally abate within a short time after the end of exposure. When products are handled continually, the skin itching generally diminishes. Chronic Toxicity: 11.2.1 Summary: In October 2001, IARC completed a re-evaluation of respirable mineral wool fibers and classified them in Group 3 (not classifiable as to their carcinogenicity to humans). A summary of the most important scientific studies appears below: Human Data:
11.2
11.2.2
11.2.2.1 The possible carcinogenic effects of exposure to mineral wool fibers has been evaluated in a number of epidemiological (human) studies. Most of this research, including large long-tem studies of mineral wool production workers in the U.S. and Europe, has been sponsored or supported by the North American and International thermal insulation industries, including Roxul Inc. Published reports of the early results of these studies identified significantly elevated rates of respiratory cancer in several subcohorts of the worker populations under evaluation (e.g., Simonato et al. 1987; Enterline et al. 1987). However, the studies had several methodological limitations, including failure to control for confounding exposures to other possible causes of the elevated cancer risk, including tobacco use and occupational exposures to recognized carcinogens such as asbestos. For these reasons, the authors of these reports did not interpret the results as establishing an association between exposure to mineral wool fibers and an increased risk of cancer. Several of these earlier reports formed part of the basis for IARCs previous classification of mineral wool fibers in Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans) (IARC 1987). 11.2.2.2 Follow-up studies, including case-control studies designed to exclude the contribution of confounding exposures to the cancer experience of the study populations, found no evidence that mineral wool fibers are associated with an increased cancer risk (Marsh et al. 1996; Wong, et al. 1991; Kjaerheim et al. 2001). In announcing the new Group 3 classification for mineral wool fibers, IARC stated: Epidemiologic studies published during the 15 years since the previous IARC Monographs review of these fibers in 1988 provide no evidence of increased risks of lung cancer or of mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the body cavities) from occupational exposures during manufacture of these materials (IARC 2001). 11.2.3 Animal Data:
11.2.3.1 Several studies of intraperitoneal injection of high doses of mineral wool fibers have produced significant increases in the incidence of mesothelioma (IARC 2002). The intraperitoneal injection studies formed part of the basis for IARCs previous (IARC 1987) Group 2B classification for mineral wool fibers. Leading scientists agree that intraperitoneal injection studies (i.e., surgical implantation or injection into the chest or abdomen) are the least relevant type of animal study for evaluating
Page 5 of 7
potential human risk for fiber exposures, because such studies bypass the animals natural defense mechanisms and involve a type and pattern of exposure (implantation of a high dose early in life) that does not mimic human patterns of exposure (inhalation of much lower doses over a lifetime) (National Research Council 2000). 11.2.3.2 A well-designed long-term inhalation study in rats exposed to mineral wool fibers found no significant increase in lung tumor incidence, and no mesotheliomas (IARC 2002). Likewise, in two intratracheal instillation studies of mineral wool fibers, no significant increase in the incidence of lung tumors or mesotheliomas was found (IARC 2002). Inhalation studies are regarded as the most relevant type of animal data for evaluating potential human risk, and intratracheal instillation studies, while less relevant, are considered valuable for the initial screening of fibrous compounds (National Research Council 2000). Thus, evaluating all the available animal studies in conjunction with the human data, IARCs most recent review finds inadequate evidence overall for any cancer risk from mineral wool fibers (IARC 2001). 11.3 Evaluations of Potential Carcinogenicity: Source IARC ACGIH Classification Group 3 Group A3 Description Not Classifiable as a Human Carcinogen Confirmed Animal Carcinogen with Unknown Relevance to Humans

XPS PIB
Extruded Polystyrene Pipe Insulation Billet
XPS PIB (eXtruded PolyStyrene Pipe Insulation Billet) is a rigid thermoplastic foam manufactured by a proprietary extrusion process that forms a uniform, void-free, closed cell structure. This structure, along with the naturally water-repellent nature of the polystyrene resin, gives XPS PIB products high compressive strength, low friability and excellent resistance to water vapor and water absorption from freezethaw cycling. XPS PIB is non-dusting and non-irritating and is not a known food source for mold and mildew.
XPS PIB complies with ASTM C578, Type XIII
Applications
XPS PIB is used extensively in industrial and commercial piping applications. With a service temperature range of -297F to 165F (-183C to 74C), XPS PIB is a preferred material for lowtemperature systems, both for minimizing heat gain and preventing surface condensation. XPS PIB maintains its key insulating properties in lowtemperature applications and other environments with high humidity and high-moisture conditions. Typical applications for XPS PIB include: ammonia refrigeration lines freezer rooms chilled water piping transport pipelines cold storage systems refrigeration equipment pharmaceutical plants cryogenic systems

All properties are measured at 74 (23C), unless otherwise indicated. Unless otherwise indicated, data shown are typical values obtained from representative production samples. This data may be used as a guide for design purposes, but should not be construed as specifications. For property ranges and specifications, consult your ITW representative. Trymer 2000 XP has third party test results showing a 180 day aged k-Factor of 0.168 Btu-in/hr-ft-F at 75F mean temperature. This value demonstrates the excellent performance of the product and can be used for comparison to other materials and to qualify Trymer 2000 XP to specification requirements. Thermal conductivity test results include no safety factor and are obtained in pristine lab conditions on samples with no joints and that have not been subjected to the vagaries of installation. For Trymer 2000XP, ITW recommends that a more conservative 180 days aged k-Factor curve represented by a value of 0.19 Btu-in/hr-ft-F at 75F mean temperature be used for all system design and insulation thickness calculation purposes. Frequent and severe thermal cycling can produce dimensional changes significantly greater than those stated here. Special design consideration must be made in systems that cycle frequently. Above 300F, discoloration and charring will occur, resulting in an increased k-factor in the discolored area. This numerical flame spread data is not intended to reflect hazards presented by this or any other material under actual fire conditions.
