Kristine Haataja ED 337 Performance Task Assessment Volcanics Unit This unit will be taught following the inquiry

based activity using the rice maps to investigate plate tectonics. Students will be sufficient in understanding the types of plate boundaries and associated features prior to embarking on this unit. Prior to this assessment the class will have taken a diagnostic assessment to denote what knowledge and misconceptions students have. They also will have made a map locating the location of volcanoes in the world as a reference for the week. Students will have already investigated volcano geometry from an activity modified from S. Mattox. Purpose: This formative and summative assessment will evaluate the students understanding of several key objectives pertaining to volcanism in this unit. As they have already reached the knowledge and comprehension levels of these skills, this assessment is designed to allow application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of the material. The formative portion of this assessment will be the packet that they need to fill out to stay on track and focused on the goals, there are periodic checkpoints for the teacher to assess understanding. The summative portion will be group presentations created by the students to teach 8th graders about specific volcanic characteristics and impacts on earth systems as well as mankind. This week, students will work in their research groups and assess one volcano. They will create a presentation that applies their previous knowledge to a specific example. Students will also analyze the consequences of a volcano on earth systems based on physical and chemical characteristics. They will also be taking their information and investigating the impact their volcano has on humans. The construction of the presentation portion encourages synthesis of the material. Students will also evaluate their peers presentations. The teachers role in this project is to be a learning guide and a resource. They will be in charge of the method of instruction. The grades from this presentation will be included in the assessment portion of your final grade. State Standards: E3.4B: Describe how the sizes of earthquakes and volcanoes are measured or characterized. E3.4C: Describe the effects of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions on humans. E3.4d: Explain how the chemical composition of magmas relates to plate tectonics and affects the geometry, structure, and explosivity of volcanoes. E3.4e: Explain how volcanoes change the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and other Earth systems. Learning Targets: 1. I can apply my comprehension of general volcanoes to a specific example and investigate significant factors. 2. I can investigate the effects of volcanoes on humans by assessing its geometry, structure and explosivity. 3. I can investigate impacts of volcanoes on earth systems. 3. I can create a presentation to teach others about volcanic characteristics, effects on humans, and impacts on earth systems. 4. I can evaluate a peer presentation about volcanic characteristics and effects.

Volcano Research Presentation Among all of the natural disasters on earth, volcanoes are the most easily studied and implications can be predicted. However, volcanoes continue to impact humans, ecosystems, and the construct of the land around us. We will be applying our knowledge about plate tectonics, earth systems, and volcanism to a specific research example. We will also be assessing location, geometry, structure, magma composition, gas composition, and eruptive styles. On top of that we will be investigating the effects of volcanoes on earth systems as well as to mankind. I challenge you! You will be assigned research groups and will be creating a presentation to inform the youth of our area th (8 grade students) about the characteristics of volcanoes as well as the dangers. This presentation should be informational, engaging, organized, and should connect to the big picture. Approach this situation as teachers yourself. I will be here to provide you with some basic information and guidelines for the presentation but you are responsible for conducting quality research and establishing the methods you will use to present. Before the presentation you will get the opportunity to evaluate another group and be evaluated yourself. This should help you feel comfortable and ready! Your final product will be the presentation next Monday. (25% research, 75% presentation) You will be working on this task for several days as outlined below:

Day 1: Tuesday o Introduction of project (20 minutes) o Preparing for the project/roles (20 minutes) o Begin preliminary research (35 minutes) Day 2: Wednesday o Research Day (60 minutes) o What is a reliable source? o Check in with Ms. Haataja (15 minutes) Day 3: Thursday o Collaborate and construct (75 minutes) Day 4: Friday o Finishing touches (25 minutes) o Practice run through with one other group (50 minutes) Day 5: Monday th o Presentation to 6 graders (75 minutes) Evaluation: You will be evaluated using the same rubrics that appear in this packet. This task is a demonstration of your understanding of volcanic concepts as well as your ability to apply and synthesize this material to discuss one example of a volcano which will be assigned to you. Please use the checklist above to keep track of your progress. This will be an exciting learning experience; dont let this packet intimidate you. You know this material and can do it! I am here to assist with anything you need. Good luck!

Day 1: Preparing for the project

Names:_ _______________________________________________________________________ TO DO: Select topic assign roles preliminary research

o o o Select Topic

You will be drawing a volcano out of a hat. Each volcano is unique and exciting. The Volcano we will be researching is _____________________________________________ Please discuss with you research group and list any information you already know about this volcano:

Assign Roles
Assigning roles is valuable because it gives everyone a responsibility and a helps distribute the work evenly. There are four people per group, please discuss amongst yourselves who will do what job. You all will be conducting research, participating in creation of the presentation, and presenting. Group leader: You are to be the encouragement and the role that will make sure progress is being made. You are responsible for making sure each days work is complete and thorough, and set up the schedule for the next day. Group Leader: ________________ Question asker/Secretary: You are to be the group member that is responsible for asking other groups for clarification or asking me for any questions. You are also the one responsible for recording thoughts in this packet. Question asker: _______________ Research recorder: You are responsible for recording the research sources and double checking that they are reliable resources. Research recorder: _______________ Creative liaison: You are responsible for making sure the presentation has creative elements. Creative liaison: ________________

Preliminary research During this stage, I just want you to look at anything and everything regarding your subject. A Google search would be a good place to start. We also have lots of hard copies of journal articles and bound books on the shelf. Look at information that is relevant or interesting. Look up pictures, videos, or anything that sparks your interest in this topic. My goal for you is to take a look at what information is out there. Tomorrow we will start conducting organized research. Use this sheet to record interesting websites, facts, and ideas about the project.

CONTENT EXPLANATIONS: o Where is your volcano located? o Using GoogleEarth as we did in the Volcanoes activity, look up your volcano and determine its geometry and structure. Please take a screen shot of the profile to use in your presentation. o Research the magma composition and the gas composition of your volcano. Based on what we learned in class, make a conclusion about the eruptive style. o Apply your knowledge about plate tectonics to explain the tectonic situation occurring with your volcano. (A visual representation would be helpful here) o By considering all of the factors you just investigated, investigate the impacts your volcano has on humans in the present, past, and impacts it could have in the future. It is important to look at the current status of volcanic activity as well. (the words dormant and active will help with research) o Aside from affecting humans, take a systems approach and brainstorm what impacts would volcanism have to your area of study. Think hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, geosphere, and even the exosphere. Investigate direct impacts from your volcano.

Check in with teacher This is a teacher check in, so I can make sure you are on the right track and your research question is clear and you are finding appropriate information. Notes:
