ICOLD International Commission on Large Dams

Michel de VIVO Secretary General

What Is ICOLD?
International Commission On Large Dams was founded in Paris in 1928. Initially ICOLD was a commission of the WEC

Currently comprised of 85 countries and 10,000 individual members

Engineering Companies, Consultants, Builders, Development companies, Scientists, Researchers, Engineers, University Professors, Governments, Financial Institutions, Associations..

What does ICOLD do?

ICOLD leads the profession in setting guidelines to ensure that dams are built safely, economically, and in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner. .

What does ICOLD do?

Forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience
Congress every 3 years Annual meeting in a different country each year
Next meeting in St Petersburg in June 24-27 2007

Main Dams Benefits

In many cases Large Dams have proved to be sustainable development tools for:
Flood Regulation Large Supply of Drinking Water Agriculture Development Cheap and Clean Electricity Replacing Polluting Energies Reducing Deforestation Tourism and Fish Breeding

Electricity in Africa

in Africa, 70% of the people live without electricity 8% of the hydroelectrical potential is exploited

Electricity in Africa
Africa : 450 kWh/cap/year North America : 12 000 kWh/cap/year

Grand Inga hydroelectric potential is more than 280 TWh ..

The bigger the dams, the less costly.

Interests of Grand Inga dam

High Power Capacity Regularity of the flow Large production capacity Exceptional cost of kWh generated Small impacts on Environment

around 40 000 MW more than 7 000 h / year More than 280 TWh / year less than 0,01 $ / kWh

Grand Inga will save more than 100 million Tons of fossil fuel each year

Average costs of Electricity

Hydropower potential in Africa

60 % of the African hydropower potential of 1100 TWh is concentrated on 3 countries : RDC Ethiopia Cameroon 400 TWh 160 TWh 100 TWh

3 among the 4 largest dams in the world are African but the largest African Power plant is only at the 30th rank in the world

Grand Inga will produce 280 TWh / year which is more than the 5 largest African dams cumulated. But those 5 dams store more than 10% of the world reservoir storage (500 billion m3)

Large possibilities of export

Grand Inga benefits

Cumulated Incomes

Cumulated Expenses Benefits area: > Free kWh for RDC development > Cash from cheap kWh sold abroad

First Operation year

30 years

Now conditions are favorable to develop Grand Inga for Africa

High Power Ministerial Declaration, Johannesburg, March 9 2006 had a strong message for hydropower International lenders are favorable to dam and hydropower Other energies are expansive and polluting The Grand Inga kWh cost is very cheap The interconnected high voltage African network is being constructed The environmental impact of Gd Inga project is small

ICOLD is ready to bring its support share its experience and expertise order to contribute to the realization Grand Inga project
