Interview with dr. Anthony Donovan of The Voltures and Classwar Karaoke

So are you realy a doctor? What kind of a doctor are you? :) Yes: a Ph.D., a Doctor of Philosophy, an art historian/theorist. Can you say something about your musical education? I've never had any formal musical education; so, to that extent, I am what might be called self-taught. But, I've learned a lot of things from others over the years, which has accrued as a kind of on-going learning process. That has been persons I've known and met and others whose work I've appreciated, on albums, gigs and so on. I believe in serving a kind of apprenticeship, and that such a period is, in fact, never truly over if one has a healthy attitude to life. In terms of musical instruments, I began on bass guitar; these days, though, I tend more towards homemade and hybrid instruments in live improv situations. I play guitar every day, even if only recreationally. What do you call Classwar Karaoke? A label? It began as a kind of outlet on myspace, in 2008. I'd moved a couple of hundred miles away from where I grew up, and so away from friends, most of whom are musicians. It was basically a way of maintaining contact other than just by means of email etc. The deadline aspect and being published rigidly every three months affords structure to the project. From that, it just grew into a label, yes, I'd say so; and as the internet itself developed, with sites offering free hosting for music, so the project itself grew and matured. I invited Jaan Patterson and Adrian Beentjes to co-operate Classwar Karaoke with me around 2010, as I felt it might be more interesting to share things. Adrian suggested including film; whilst, crucially, Jaan shifted us onto Free Music Archive. FMA has been an incredible host for us; the site itself is unrivalled, I'd say. Certainly, between it and Bandcamp and Soundcloud and Internet Archive, any fan of music is offered amazing access to free music of the very highest standard...easily as good as anything in the mainstream, commercial sector. By now, with 0021 survey due at the end of February 2013, Classwar Karaoke is up to around half-amillion combined hits; with 0020 survey to-date standing at almost 28,000, after less than two

months. It now easily attracts serious artists with international reputations, just as it still offers an outlet for those making music just for themselves, as it were. I think that combination that inclusivity, upon which I founded the project is what makes it special. It has created so many connections between people, so many opportunities; and, by now, we have organised a series of gathering / mini-festivals etc. This has meant that contributors to the surveys have met, collaborated, played live, joined forces. That is exactly why I continue to do the project and what makes me happiest about it.

Classwar Karaoke was a band at first. Why did you stop? I have used the term in many ways over the years; ranging from pertaining to visual / installation works I did as a student in the early 1990s, to, in 1993, the working-title for a kind of improvising group I assembled, to, eventually, serving as the name for the label. It perfectly describes my outlook a combination of an intentioned political outlook, but offered with a hint of the sardonic, a piece of political satire or black comedy. You dont release just those surveys. Can you say something about those other releases? We've released a few other things, yes: an album by Bob Ostertag, who has been really kind in associating his work with Classwar Karaoke over the last couple of years. Also, Jaan, Adrian and I assembled an album, At Philosoph, each of us choosing three friends. Three parts one each where made and then combined. It is still one of my favourite things.

How do you find artists to release them on CWK?

By now, a lot of people contribute to the surveys as they happen and, happily, a lot of people approach me, asking to participate. Other than that, I do heaps of research, on free sites, sites generally, and by investigating an artist's work. I invite folk if I like what they do. I like to keep Classwar Karaoke fresh; so, for me, it's important that new blood is introduced on each survey ... of course, that all means the surveys get bigger in terms of contributors each time, and that, consequently, there is much more work to do. I'm up for it, though, and I can see future surveys have many hundreds of contributors. That's fine by me, as I don't see them as a kind of compilation album. I see them literally as surveys; and my goal is that everyone who makes Experimental music and film, and who is willing, should appear at least once. Which by your opinion was the best survey to this point? I don't see the project like that, as individual releases. By this time, it's one huge body of incredible work ... a beautiful thing.

key figures in my life were there, also notably my friend Robert Pepper of PAS, who I've subsequently played with and collaborated with many times. There have been a couple of line-up changes over the years for Vultures, and now we have settled as a trio, confusingly called Vultures Quartet! Where did you release your albums. What labels? Vultures / Vultures Quartet albums have been released by SubRosa and Born-in-Mind. There are albums forthcoming from Tzadik and Zos Kia Sounds. Do you still release your music on an audio cassette? No. I do plan to set Classwar Karaoke as a CDR and cassette label in the near-future, however. What is your discography with Vultures? What was the first release? What was the last release? As I said, I met Robert Pepper in late 2008. PAS member Amber Brien was at that gig, also, I think; I only met Mike Durek later; and I have not so far met John Worthley. The following year, Robert invited Vultures to play with PAS at the Avantgarde Festival in Germany, organised by Faust. A mini-tour was built around that, with dates in UK, Holland, Germany and Macedonia. In 2010, we shared the stage again at the Avantgarde Festival of that year; as we did for a third time in 2012, this time with Ampersand, also. In 2010, Vultures Quartet and PAS (plus Fluid) performed, separately and in collaboration, at the Spark festival in Minneapolis, USA. I joined PAS for a performance at Cocart in Torun, Poland, in 2011, as well. Additionally, Robert and PAS have contributed to almost every Classwar

Can you say something about Vultures? When did it start, who are they/you? Vultures Quartet is Matt Chilton, Will Connor and myself; we work with an ever-changing role-call of fourth members which has included the likes of Steve Beresford, Damo Suzuki, W.T. Richards, Schuyler Tsuda and Philippe Petit. VQ began, as plain Vultures, in November 2008, formed by Will and Andie Brown. Just before that, I was invited by Will to play at a gig he'd organised In London, as part of the band I was in at the time. There, I met Will for the first time, plus I saw Matt perform. Other

Karaoke survey, and we have collaborated on other things recordings, films etc. I count Robert as a close friend, despite the distance between him in New York and myself in England. PAS is the real thing; and what he has done in New York and during extensive touring in Europe is nothing short of inspirational. What was it like 2009? 2009 was very busy for me - with Vultures Quartet, several collaborations, and with developing Classwar Karaoke. When will you hit the road with Vultures again? We play at Ghent Jazz Festival in Belgium, July 2013. Will you tour Europe? No plans at the moment other than that gig in Belgium. I plan gigs in Germany myself with others, possibly France, also. Do you want to play in Slovenia? Sure, if we could make it happen. I am always open to play wherever people want to see the kind of music I am into. What is your experience with The Balkan? Ex-YU? I don't have any personal experience of any of the former Yugoslavian countries. Matt, Robert, Amber and Will played in Macedonia, as I noted above. I missed out on that because I opted to go on a several days long driving -tour through Germany, Luxembourg and France. During the Balkans war, I was heavily-involved in Mail Art, and I had several very close correspondents in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia. Do you mix audio with video as well with Vultures? We've done very little film; in fact, I can only recall one film I made for a festival years ago, which ran as a backdrop to our performance.

Pixyblink, One Minute Wanda and Anton Mobin have performed these as spoken word parts to compositions I've made. I do plan one day to publish the series as some kind of book. Any last words? The main, and perhaps the only real, motivation for my activities as an artist is sharing, sharing love, in fact. My personal politics chimes with this - and with Classwar Karaoke in particular I've worked to provide a genuinely different environment for art; one ideologically and practically different, even opposed, to the divisive and individualist logic of the mainstream. I try to put my beliefs into everything I do as an artist. I could do none of it, though, if it wasn't for the massive caring and loving support of my partner, Annie Dee. Her love for and genuine interest in what I do are what spurs me on. She makes sense of and gives context to the otherwise seemingly ephemeral things of art. She has seen me play live more times than anyone, seen more of my work than anyone, and has shared more of the burden and at times frustration than anyone; and it is her opinion I value and listen to most. If art isn't for love, in my view it is worthless.

What about poetry? I write prose every day, more or less. I have an ongoing, long-standing series I call 'items'. There are literally hundreds of these published on-line now on my blog and on my facebook pages. I use them in what I do as Murmurists ... the name I give to my solo work or work where I act as composer / director. Artists such as Bryan Lewis Saunders,

El Silencio Ssmico This record was made between June and September of 2012. I used only portable devices (walkmans, FM transmitters, dictaphones, journalist type digital recorders, cameras, AM radios, etc). Some of the recordings were made with magnetophone, others with professional walkman and others with a Roland digital recoder. Most of the music i make is related to dance or was made in between dance rehearsals, because i usually work with dance pieces (specially Butoh dance with my girlfriend , Yuko Kominami).

The title (El Silencio Ssmico) refers to the period of time where there are no earthquakes (silence)...but the earth is charging its energy for the next one....

But we all know that in fact there are 28 remixes accompanying Biophilia which were released on 12 little remix albums. I have decided to gather them all together and make a compilation album containing ALL THE 28 official remixes released up to now. Artwork and the order of the tracks are made by me, hopefully you will enjoy it as it took me really a lot of time. For me, Biophilia is a gorgeous work of art and these remixes are wonderful extensions of the original concept.
