WINTER TEST PAPER

Weather and Your Mood
It seems that everyone has a favorite season. Some like the hot summer weather, while others prefer
the crisp winter air. People often enjoy the beautiful colors in the autumn trees as well as the
picturesque flowers that bloom in the spring. However, recent research has suggested that the seasonal
changes may be responsible for triggering a mood disorder known as Seasonal Affective Disorder
(SAD).
The outdoor environment and particularly the weather, plays tricks with our mood. A rainy, dark day
can bring soberness to even the most enthusiastic among us. The hot days of summer make us go
through the day a little shower, and the cold, short days of winter make us feel powerless. Why the
weather has such a profound effect on our mood is something that searchers have been trying to find
out. There is an optimal temperature for our mood, according to the University of Michigan
researchers. Its 23 degrees C, or about room temperature.
Generally speaking the researchers found that weather can improve mood, memory, openness to new
information and creative thoughts. In order to get the benefits from warm, sunny weather, the
researchers found that you must spend at least 30 minutes outside. Meanwhile, if you go from winter
to spring, or take a trip somewhere warm during the winter, the beneficial effects seem to be more
noticeable. When the weather outside is nice, people who are trapped indoors tend to experience
worse moods. In such a case it can be truly beneficial for those who are trapped to go outside, even
for a short walk. However, when you cant control the weather, you can control your mood.
Even though the weather has the potential to impact your mood, that doesnt mean you have to let it do
so. This is because you, and not the weather, ultimately control your mood. If you find yourself feeling
down because it is a very hot, cold or rainy day, all you have to do is to recognize that you can release
these feelings and be productive no matter what is happening outside.
