Iron Devils to host First Robotics Competition

The Seneca High School Iron
Devils robotics team will be host-
ing the First Robotics Competi-
tion March 21-24.
The team is comprised of
Seneca and Shawnee upperclass-
men.
Seneca hosted the event last
year, drawing approximately 2,000
visitors, according to Robotics
Advisor Chuck DiVincenzo.
It was pretty hard walking
down the hallways at some
points. I was surprised at how
many people were actually
there, DiVincenzo said.
The team has been working on
a better-designed robot for this
years competition since nation-
als ended last April.
The kids learn as much as
they can about engineering and
math. When it comes time to
build the robot they come up with
different designs by making mock
ups, DiVincenzo said. The elec-
tronics kids actually made a test-
ing station this year. When we
started putting the robot together
we were able to test it. It made
things easier for the team.
Competing teams were re-
quired to shoot foam basketballs,
a skill the Iron Devils were never
able to get the hang of, according
to DiVincenzo.

Recently, the Shamong Town-
ship Board of Education was no-
tified that eighth-grade language
arts teacher Cathy Campeau was
selected as the Medford VFW Post
7677s Teacher of the Year.
Additionally, the post nominat-
ed Campeau as its candidate for
the Smart/Maher VFW National
Citizenship Education Teacher
Award Competition.
Campeau was recognized for
more than 11 years of unwaver-
ing support to the VFWs Patriots
Pen Youth Essay Contest.
This is a national-level pro-
gram designed to encourage pa-
triotism and good citizenship.
Through her determined efforts,
the school worked with the Veter-
ans of Foreign Wars and Ameri-
can Legion to establish good citi-
zenship graduation awards for de-
serving male and female stu-
dents. Campeau was also ac-
knowledged by the school and dis-
trict administration in letters of
recommendation to solidify her
nomination; attesting to her ex-
ceptional abilities as a teacher
and mentor to her students and
fellow teachers at IMMS.

FAFSA workshop slated
for March 20 at BCC
The second-grade teachers at
Indian Mills School decided to
spice up their Writing Workshop
with a new twist. They thought if
the students really enjoy a partic-
ular book, why not invite the au-
thor in to present the story to the
class and see what happens?
All the second-grade classes
read a book entitled The Final
Swing to highlight the use of
surprise endings. Since Read
Across America was the follow-
ing week, these innovative teach-
ers decided to tie the two together
and offered Laura Wieland, a
Cherry Hill native, an opportuni-
ty to come to their classes.
On Feb. 27, Wieland sat down
with the second graders of IMS,
read her book, and took the time
to answer a multitude of ques-
tions on style and the writing
process.
It was just the response the
teachers were hoping for.
The students were completely
entranced by the story, even more
so coming from the authors own
voice.
Their enthusiasm was infec-
tious as they peppered Wieland
with question after question
about the plot and how she decid-
ed to write the story the way she
did. You couldnt ask for a better
session! The way Ms. Wieland in-
teracted with our students was
tremendous, Kim Fox spokesper-
son for IMS said.
The second-grade teachers at
IMS and Wieland have given
these children a moment to cher-
ish. It is doubtful they will ever
forget the day the author came to
town.

this season.
Dimension requirements of
the robots are now required to be
120 inches.
The robots can be as tall as five-
feet by three-feet by two-feet, ac-
cording to DiVincenzo. No two ro-
bots will look or function the
same.
We were looking at the things
we did right and what we can im-
prove. We spent a lot of time try-
ing to perfect shooting goals in
different areas, DiVincenzo said
noting Pete Puzio and Megan
Jones helped the team prepare.
The Iron Devils have been
working on aiming Frisbees in-
side various openings and at-
tempting to achieve consistency
the team failed to find last year.
It took us awhile to get the
shooting to where they wanted it.
Now that its shooting better I
think theyre more confident
about what they can do in the
competition, DiVincenzo said.
Thirty-two teams will be in at-
tendance. Two teams from
Delaware, 10 from Pennsylvania
and 20 from New Jersey will con-
tend for the title as top robotics
team.
The Iron Devils have complet-
ed a competition, finishing 11th.
We are really looking forward
to seeing how much it improves a
week from now, DiVincenzo
said.
Sister schools Lenape and
Cherokee have a team, Storm Ro-
botics, that will be going up
against the Iron Devils.
Despite the rivalry, the battle to
the top is a friendly one.
Its fun to watch a team suc-
ceed whether youre competing
against them or not. You actually
root for them to make it, DiVin-
cenzo said. Youre just rooting
for everyone to be successful,
which means a robot working.
You hate to see a robot not work.
Students developed the proj-
ects three to four hours a day dur-
ing the week, plus an additional
six to eight hours on weekends.
The Iron Devils wont just be
unveiling a new robot; theyll be
donning new jerseys.
The team will be trading in the
burgundy shirts for a new color
and catchphrase.
Additionally, the team will be
handing out Frisbees with its col-
ors and phrases.
The First Robotics Competi-
tion will be held March 21-24 at
Seneca High School located at 110
Carranza Road.
Admission to the event is free.
Anybody who likes technology
would be amazed at all the stu-
dents. Every team has dedica-
tion, DiVincenzo said.

Regional school taxes decrease

There will be no change in next years
tax levy, resulting in a decrease in regional
school taxes of $1.05 on a home assessed at
the township average of $308,378, accord-
ing to an official statement released by the
Lenape Regional High School District.
The information was released following
the LRHSD Board of Education meeting on
March 5.
According to the release, the total 2013-
2014 budget is $150.4 million, which repre-
sents a 1.79 percent increase from the cur-
rent year.
No further information was released on
the budget. It is slated for further discus-
sion during the March 27 meeting.
In other news, two presentations were
given during the meeting.
Chris Heilig discussed the new progress
targets to be met by individual schools and
the district.
The progress targets are in place of No
Child Left Behind, a process recently dis-
continued.
The 2010 HESPA scores serve as the
baseline for progress targets, according to
Heilig. Those numbers are plugged into
formula to demonstrate proficiency rate.
According to the Department of Educa-
tion, if the all students group is current-
ly demonstrating a proficiency rate of 40
percent, the methodology would take the 60
percent point gap between 100 percent pro-
ficiency and the current rate, then divide
that group in half to determine the target
for the sixth year, a gain of 30 percentage
points.
If the targets are not met, you get a big
red no. If that's the case, there's an action
plan that needs to be implemented school
or district wide, Heilig said.
According to Heilig, LRHSD is profi-
cient district wide.

A
tlantic City, one of this states
most lucrative tourist attrac-
tions, is struggling mightily.
Competition from casinos in neighbor-
ing Pennsylvania and Delaware have
slowly, but steadily, dealt huge blows to
our Shores revenue stream.
Revel casino, which opened its doors
a little more than a year ago, said re-
cently that it was filing for Chapter 11
bankruptcy. In February, the Trump
Plaza casino sold for the lowest price
ever paid for an Atlantic City casino
$20 million.
Gov. Christie, and a contingent of
politicians in New Jersey, have recog-
nized that this is a dire situation for At-
lantic City and, in no small part, to the
states economy. To reverse the trend,
these politicians have tried, so far un-
successfully, to turn to betting on
sports.
New Jersey, along with every state
except four Nevada, Delaware, Ore-
gon and Montana are banned from of-
fering wagering on sports, stemming
from a 1992 federal law. But Christie
and his supporters are hoping to over-
turn that.
They believe that it is unfair and un-
constitutional to prohibit the Garden
State from accepting sports bets, while
Las Vegas, in particular, reaps all the
rewards. We already have full-fledged
casinos, they say, so why not allow us
to have sports betting, too?
To stop New Jersey from offering
sports wagering, the NFL, NBA, NHL,
Major League Baseball and the NCAA
sued New Jersey last year to prohibit
the practice, and recently, a judge up-
held the ban on sports gambling in the
state. Christie says he will appeal the
decision, and we applaud his efforts.
Sports wagering is a harmless prac-
tice, or, at the very least, is no more
harmful than a bet in blackjack,
roulette, let it ride, or any other casino
game that is currently offered in At-
lantic City. So why the continued ban?
New Jerseys gaming industry needs
sports wagering. Its a booming sector
of the industry, much like poker was a
few years back. Billions of dollars each
year are bet legally on sports in Ne-
vada, and estimates say illegal sports
wagering through bookies or off-
shore websites might total hundreds
of billions more.
So why not allow Atlantic City, New
Jersey, and the United States, earn that
taxable income? It just makes sense.

The second presentation high-
lighted statistics for the violence,
vandalism and harassment, in-
timidation and bullying report
from July 1 to Dec. 31.
The district is required to re-
port two times a year.
According to security and
emergency management coordi-
nator James Kehoe, HIB, previ-
ously categorized under violence,
is in its own category.
There were a total of 31 inci-
dents in the first six months of
the school year, compared to 34 in
the same time frame last year.
There were 13 instances of vio-
lence broken down into four cases
of assault, one verbal threat and
eight fights.
According to Kehoe, an assault
is when a student attacks another,
and a fight is between two stu-
dents.
Vandalism incidents went
down by one. There have been
two thefts, one damaged vehicle
and a bomb threat that eventually
led to the arrest of the suspect.
There were 11 cases of substance
issues reported.
There were six cases of abuse,
four instances of possession and
one reported indecent of intent to
distribute.
Regarding HIB, there were
three reported cases, one involv-
ing sexual orientation and the
two cases were reported based on
other distinguishing characteris-
tics, such as weight or size.
Discipline of the students
ranged from counseling, schedule
changes and parent conferences.
The district has continued the
initiative to eliminate HIB.
Multiple programs including
No Place for Hate, Violence
Awareness Week, Week of Re-
spect and Upstanders have been
put in place in an effort to combat
these issues.
In other news, according to su-
perintendent of schools Carol
Birnbohm, all four district
schools have kicked off the Good-
will Challenge.
Last year, 25,000 pounds of do-
nations were made.
Donations can be made at all
four schools through April 12.
The next board of education
meeting will be held March 27 at
7:30 p.m. to discuss the 2013-2014
budget. Meetings are held at the
district building located at 93 Wil-
low Grove Road.
