Wenonah Canoe
W
enonah Canoe is a small, independent, family-owned company that has become an award-winning designer and manufacturer of high performance canoes and kayaks, sold and paddled around the world. We are a different kind of company. In a world dominated by giant manufacturers, we measure our success by the success of our dealers and the satisfaction of our customers. Our mission has always been to fit people into the best boats for their chosen use. In this, we reflect the values and the passion of our founder Mike Cichanowski. As we celebrate our 40th anniversary its a good time to look back at how it all came to be.

The Story

Mike, his wife and young family stuck with it through some very lean years as Mike learned the entrepreneurial skills that would make canoe building a successful enterprise instead of just a lifestyle choice. When plastics, composites, and carbon fibers came on the market, Mike made the jump. It was a big investment and a steep learning curve, but Wenonah Canoe was soon producing the fastest, lightest, most efficient canoes around. A Composites Pioneer To maximize every advantage the new materials offered, the company pioneered new construction techniques, including a vacuum-bagging process that pulls excess resins out of the construction thus reducing weight and improving strength. The process emits no fumes and minimizes waste. The company also invented and patented Tuf-Weave, a proprietary blend of fiberglass and polyester. To evolve new materials and processes for making canoes, the company took full advantage of its location. Winona, Minnesota has become a world leader in composites manufacturing, home to dozens of companies that engineer products for sports, music, aerospace and industrial uses. Mike now serves on the advisory board of the composites

Born To Paddle Mike grew up in Winona, Minnesota, where he inherited the ethics and values of his ancestors hard-working Polish immigrants who worked in the towns lumber mills. Living on the edge of the great Upper Mississippi River, Mike learned to paddle a canoe at a very young age. In Minnesota, thousands of lakes and rivers can be found within 300 miles, and he paddles many of them. Canoes were his passion. By the time Mike became an Eagle Scout, he had built several wood-strip canoes and was molding his own designs from fiberglass.

"

When youre young you can risk everything, because you have nothing to lose, But you have to stick with it.
Not only was he good at working with his hands and good at solving problems, Mike took a lot of pride in doing this work and doing it well. So, when the warehouse he used as his canoemaking shop was slated for demolition, he made an important move: Instead of settling down to study Wildlife Management in college, he applied for a bank loan, bought land, and built a small shop on the edge of town. He wanted to build canoes. There was no looking back.

"

The early days were spent paddling Lake Winona and in the BWCA.

Mike Cichanowski and his family are all die hard paddlers and avid canoe racers.

The Wenonah Canoe Factory is located beneath the picturesque bluffs of the Mississippi River Valley.

engineering program at Winona State University. Mikes love for paddle sports has always been a magnet for others who share the same passion. Before long, he collected a team of dedicated employees. Dave Thill has led the manufacturing development for 33 years. Rick Thrune has made significant contributions to composites technology as well and is responsible for implementing new manufacturing processes. Hard-working, innovative craftsmen have made us the worldclass company we are today. Specializing in Performance Designs High-tech materials and dedicated people are part of our story, sophisticated design is another. Noon-hour training trips on the river and regular trips to the Boundary Waters with family and friends helped develop countless design ideas. Mike's long friendship and partnership with legendary canoe designer Gene Jensen contributed to several successful new canoe designs. Our Kevlar Ultralight Minnesota II quickly became the canoe of choice in the Boundary Waters, transforming burdensome portages and long paddles across wilderness lakes, and effectively opening the experience to many. New opportunities arose when Brian Henry and Mike Henderson, kayak designers and owners of Current Designs in Victoria, British Columbia, entered the scene. To make their own dreams a reality, they needed more production capacity and manufacturing expertise, so they joined forces with us in 1991. In 1999 we purchased majority ownership in Current Designs and in 2004 we moved it's home base to a new manufacturing facility in our home town of Winona. Award Winning Company Over the years, Mikes dedication to building his business has won him and the company numerous awards, including the prestigious Composite Fabricators Association Community Commitment Award, and

This award recognizes outstanding community and volunteer involvement, and a life-long dedication to improving peoples lives. As a recipient, Mike joins the likes of astronaut Neil Armstrong, film director Steven Spielberg, President Gerald R. Ford and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, among others. As an entrepreneur, Mike is a frequent speaker at business schools in the area. He also takes every opportunity to work with and motivate youth, scout groups and many others. Specialty Dealers To sell our canoes, we depend on a network of specialty dealers. These knowledgeable people are experts in their areas. They know their local lakes and rivers, and the boats they sell. We work hard to maintain great relationships with more than 400 specialty dealers around the world. Hard Work Has Paid Off After more than 40 years of hard work and ceaseless challenge, Mike still has a passion for paddling. He has raced canoes all over the world, including Europe, South Africa, and Australia. He won the American Canoe Associations Adult-Youth canoe racing championship with both of his daughters, and was part of the first American team invited to race dragon boats in China. One summer day, he even paddled to work after a torrential rainstorm flooded

roads and cut off traffic to the canoe factory. With that kind of tireless inspiration at its head, the company too still has a passion for paddling. We drop in on dealers to paddle with them once or twice a year. Many employees, along with Mike, sneak out early and head to the river on summer Fridays to paddle the mighty Mississippi. A great deal has changed in 40 years, but much remains the same. Today Wenonah Canoe is the worlds largest manufacturer of Kevlar canoes and the second largest manufacturer of Royalex canoes. We help sponsor expeditions on waters all over the world, and we work to see that all generations of people have a chance to get hooked on the self-reliance that paddle sports bring. We have a passion for creating high-performance canoes from hightech materials, and we do it all with old-world craftsmanship and values.

How to Choose
e offer more than 25 canoe models, most of which can be fabricated in several different materials. How do you choose the right canoe for you? Follow these four steps to help narrow down the decision and ensure you'll find the perfect Wenonah Canoe for you.

The Best Canoe

First, try to narrow your search down to one or two categories of boats. To do this, consider your priorities. How and for what do you plan on using this canoe? What type of water are you going to paddle? How much gear are you likely to take along? How skilled are the paddlers? Find a category that best matches your basic needs:

Once you've decided on a category of boats that will fit your needs (or more importantly, eliminated the categories that don't) then you should decide which aspects of performance are most important to you.

Read and understand the basics of Canoe Design on page 5-6. Learn why the different dimensions and hull shapes, both above and below the water line, determine to what degree a canoe will excel at which aspects of performance. The main aspects of performance are:

Efficiency:

General Touring

How far the canoe goes with each stroke. A long glide following the initial stroke means the canoe is very efficient.

Designed to do many things well, they are very versatile. They're stable, maneuverable, efficient and will haul a fair amount of gear. Family's enjoy these.

Maneuverability: Capacity:

Performance Touring

How easily the boat will turn. A lot of boats are specifically designed to "Track Straight". We always say it's much easier to turn a boat than keep one going straight. How much gear and weight the canoe can hold.

Light and fast. They track and glide well, and respond best in the hands of experienced paddlers. These designs are true performance boats.

Initial Stability: Final Stability:

Sports & Leisure

How "tippy" a boat feels when you're getting in and out of it or when it's resting on calm water. How resistant a canoe is to tipping even when leaned or in high winds and waves.

Popular with begginers, kids, and people who want to fish, hunt, or take photos. S&L canoes are extremely stable and easy to handle.

Down River

Seaworthiness:

Perfect for leisurely paddling in streams, rivers, and smaller rapids. These fun paddling canoes turn on a dime and slide through eddies.

How dry, stable, and predictable the canoe is in large waves or rough waters.

Whitewater

Built for paddling the fast water and raging currents of whitewater rivers. Their hulls are contoured for maneuverability and stability in steep leans.

Expedition

Finally, you can use the diagram on page 4 to help give you an idea of the specific niche for which each of our canoes were designed for. Read more in-depth on each model, arranged by category, in the back of the catalog. You can also compare the technical specs of all our models using the chart on page 11-12.

For distance paddling, adventure trips, and big water, they're designed to perform most efficiently when fully loaded with a lot of gear.

When it's time to buy, visit our website (www. wenonah.com) to locate one of our more than 400 specialty dealers who can further help you drill down to the right choice. We suggest you always test paddle a few canoes before you settle on a certain model.

We've put together this simplified guide as a reference chart to possibly help make your choice easier. The categorization of our boats are merely suggested uses and should be taken as such. Truth be told, all our canoes will perform well in most situations. When matching paddler size, load and conditions into the process of choosing the correct boat you may find a model outside your chosen category that suits your need perfectly. In the end, the most important part is that you enjoy your paddling experience.

Always try any canoe before you buy it. As with bicycles and golf clubs, you need a good fit to perform well.

Start here with the "Who, What, Where and How" you'll
be using your canoe. Decide on the right category for you.

Design
A
canoe's performance is built into its design. The dimensions and shape of the hull above and below the water line, and other variables, determine how efficient, stable, roomy, maneuverable, and seaworthy that canoe is. Of the close to 30 models of canoes in this catalog, no two perform the same. A touring canoe that's stable and easy to paddle will have a different length, width, rocker and streamlining than a performance canoe designed to go fast and glide far. Even within the same category of canoes, subtle differences in design will change their performance. DIMENSIONS LENGTH Longer canoes track straighter, travel faster, and glide farther. They also hold more and perform better when loaded. Shorter canoes turn easily and are great for paddling on tight streams. Even a 6-inch difference in length can make a dramatic difference in canoe performance. DEPTH Adding depth to the center of the hull creates more freeboard, which adds capacity and seaworthiness. Adding depth to the bow or stern helps to fend off waves or spray. WIDTH A wider hull has a higher initial stability, but requires more effort to paddle. A narrow hull requires less effort to paddle, but has less initial stability. Width also increases capacity, although not as much as length. CROSS SECTIONS SHAPE Cross-section shape determines initial and final stability. Initial stability is how stable a canoe feels when upright in calm water. Final stability is how resistant a canoe is to capsizing even when on edge. FLAT BOTTOM Typical for bargain canoes. Flat-bottomed hulls have initial stability, but are unpredictable on waves or if leaned beyond a critical angle. SHALLOW ARCH Characteristic of well-designed hulls. Good initial and final stability. Predictable and responsive when leaned or on waves. SHALLOW "V" Shaped with a ridge in the center, like a keel. Stable but rides deeper and is less efficient than a shallow arch. May snag on rocks. ROUND BOTTOM Extremely rare, used only on canoes for calm-water racing. Very fast, but has no initial stability at all and is tricky to balance.

FLARE A flared hull widens out near the gunwales. It deflects waves and resists capsize. Tumblehome

Flare

TUMBLEHOME Tumblehome is how the hull curves in toward the gunwales Tumblehome and lets the paddler paddle close to the hull. Both flare and tumblehome may be built into different parts of the same hull. Composites are the only practical material for this purpose, and even then the hull needs stout, wooden gunwales to help hold the complex shapes that combine tumblehome and flare (see the Itasca on page 30 for an example).

ROCKER Rocker describes the way some hulls curve up at the ends, like a rocking chair. Rocker plays part in a canoe's maneuverability. Longer canoes with some rocker will maneuver like much shorter canoes. Canoes with a lot of rocker turn more easily, which is why whitewater and down river canoes have steeply rockered ends. Canoes with very little Flare rocker will track straighter.
Minimal

STREAMLINING AND FULLNESS Different canoes with the same load can require more or less effort to paddle, depending on streamlining and fullness. How fast or how gradual the hull widens influences speed, capacity, and stability. A hull that widens gradually and smoothly is more efficient.
Streamline (Prism)

ENTRY LINE The entry line is the sharpness of the bow. Blunt entry lines resist impacts better, which is why whitewater canoes generally have blunt entry lines. Sharper entry lines improve the hull's efficiency and tracking.

FLAT BOTTOM vs SHALLOW ARCH COMPARISON

A canoe with a flat bottom hull feels steady when its upright on calm water. Flat bottom hulls have good initial stability. Paddlers feel little oscillation because the hulls greatest possible width is in the water.

When loaded, it rides lower but has about the same shape. It will be stable as long as it is upright in calm water.

When it leans, one side of the hull lifts entirely out of the water. With less surface area submerged, paddlers must work hard to keep it from tipping over. Flat bottom hulls have less final stability.

In waves that strike the canoe crosswise or at an angle, the flat bottom hull rises and falls on the surfaces of the waves. Paddlers must react fast to the rocking back and forth.

Initial Stability

Final Stability

A canoe with a shallow arch hull is widest just above the waterline. Because it oscillates slightly it doesnt have the rock solid feeling of a flat hull.

When loaded, the weight presses the widest part of the hull into the water, which makes the canoe more stable.

When it leans, both sides of the shallow arch hull stay in the water, making it easier for paddlers to balance.

A shallow arch hull presents less resistance to waves and rocks less. Paddlers easily maintain balance.

Materials
E
arly Native Americans built the first canoes out of materials such as cedar trees, birch bark, sinew and pine resin. They built some fineperforming canoes, but their materials limited both design and performance. In those days canoes were either fast and fragile, or strong and heavy. You couldnt have both. Adding wood strengthened them, but extra wood added weight and made them harder to paddle.

and Construction

POLYETHYLENE CANOES Polyethylene canoes have improved in recent years with the advance of new materials and manufacturing techniques. We manufacture our polyethylene Northfork canoe using a three-phase oven molding process. Polyethylene molding technologies make some of the most durable and tough canoes, but limit design and are among the heaviest construction methods. Our Northfork canoe represents the latest in three-phase polyethylene manufacturing technologies with a superior design.

Canoe builders today use an array of new materials such as plastics, carbon fibers, Kevlar, and others that are remarkably durable, strong and light. We combine and shapes these materials using sophisticated manufacturing techniques that maximize performance. The results are light, tough, flexible, and durable canoes. WOOD AND ALUMINUM CANOES A fine wood canoe is a work of art. Wood canoes can be made from edgeglued cedar strips or a wood frame covered with a fabric skin. Both are heavy and a bit fragile. They may perform well, but they require intensive maintenance. Aluminum was a great advance over wood, but the material and the manufacturing process severely cramp the design. Its impossible to form the complex curves needed to create a sleek yet stable hull. Aluminum canoes are durable, but heavy and slow. They are still being made, but they appeal mainly to outfitters who dont paddle or portage the canoes themselves.

ROYALEx CANOES Royalex canoes are manufactured from multi-laminate sheets, painstakingly designed specifically for each model. All include a closed-cell, rigid foam core providing structure and buoyancy. Royalex canoes are tough and rugged. They are the ideal choice for whitewater canoes and wherever durability is paramount. These canoes are much lighter than polyethylene canoes and can be built in nearly limitless designs. We offer many models in Royalex, ranging from cost-conscious touring and sport canoes, to robust whitewater assault canoes.

COMPOSITE CANOES The term composites simply means multiple materials bonded together. In composite canoes, fibers are shaped in a mold and bonded with resins. Any combination of fibers and resin is a composite, but there are a wide variety of materials and methods. The best-known composite canoes are fiberglass, although the term is often incorrectly applied to all composite hulls. Fiberglass is an economical, light and strong material. Some canoe manufacturers use fiberglass alone, spraying the loose fibers in a mold. We employ a more effective technique using a combination of materials and carefully hand-fit many layers of strategically-cut, woven fabrics into the mold, before bonding them with resin. Many hours of skilled labor are required. We make our composite canoes from other fabrics, including Kevlar, Tufweave and Graphite, which are stronger and lighter than fiberglass alone. They can be used alone, in combination, or with fiberglass. Good composite canoes can be pricey, but their lightness, toughness, and performance make them the best value. At Wenonah Canoe we use only the best composite materials to make the finest canoes, designing them carefully to deliver excellent performance and handling. KEVLAR Kevlar, the fiber used for aerospace, body armor and bulletproof vests, is amazingly light and strong. We've used it for more than 30 years to construct extremely light, tough, and quiet canoes. Wenonah Canoe is the world's largest maker of Kevlar canoes. TUF-WEAVE Wenonah's Tuf-weave material is an interwoven fabric made of 50% polyester and 50% fiberglass that outperforms either material alone. We use it to build tough, light hulls (although not quite as light as Kevlar or Graphite). Tuf-weave is much stronger than other fabrics, yet costs no more.

Unbelievable craftsmanship, unbelievable boat. My Kevlar MN II will likely be the last canoe I ever buy.

COMPOSITE CONSTRUCTION METHODS

"

ULTRA - LIGHT CORE CONSTRUCTION Ultra-light hulls are stiff, light and are ideal for speed and distance paddling and for all people or conditions that demand the lightest gear. A structural-foam core is laminated into the bilge, and foam ribs are laminated internally to the sides. We add extra fabric layers to strengthen specific targeted areas, and vacuumcure these hulls to get the highest ratio of strength to weight. Seats or a foot brace are side-riveted to the hull, aluminum plates are laminated into the side-rib, and hardware is riveted through the plate into the rib. This gives a very secure connection and eliminates rivet heads on the exterior.

Diamond Foam Core

Side Ribs

FLEx - CORE CONSTRUCTION Flex-core construction creates a more rugged canoe than our Ultra-light core, and is meant for general paddling on all but extreme waters. A structural-foam core is laminated into the bilge, orienting the composite fibers carefully to distribute loads. We add an extra fabric layer to the whole hull . Side ribs are not needed because Flex-core distributes more material throughout the hull. We then vacuum-cure these hulls to get the highest ratio of strength to weight. The result is a light weight and solid canoe .

Diamond Foam Core GRAPHITE Our Graphite hybrid canoe is made the same way as a Kevlar Ultra-Light, but with Graphite as the outer layer. It's ideal for paddlers who desire more stiffness in their composite canoe or simply enjoy the aesthetic appeal of a black graphite canoe.

BREIFLY FOOT BRACE Our foot brace provides solid leverage and comfort while paddling. It adjusts by a simple turn of the knob. The crossbar has unlimited adjustability to fit your legs and slides smoothly into place for quick fine-tuning. MAxIMUM CAPACITIES Published weight-bearing capacities are misleading for a number of reasons, so we don't print specific figures. Instead, we say that all Wenonah hulls have reserve capacity for their intended use. If capacity is critical, we suggest you load the hull with the intended weight and test it. CANOE WEIGHTS Your Wenonah canoe will weigh the stated figure, or perhaps a little less, with standard equipment. Wood trim, sliding seats and foot braces, and optional Gel-coat finish will add weight. STANDARD FLOTATION All hulls have flotation to keep them afloat if filled with water. Royalex canoes have foam cores. Most composite hulls have sealed-air tanks. Tuf-weave tandems with a Flex-core have polyurethane-filled end tanks.

COMPOSITE CANOE COLORS Graphite We offer 8 colors of Gel-coat finish on any composite model as an option. Kevlar Ultra-light and Graphite Ultralight hulls have "Skin-coat", showing Red the fabric's color inside and outside. A colored finish is a no-cost option, but adds 5-8 lbs. Tuf-weave hulls have sand as the interior color. Kevlar and Graphite hulls show the fabrics own color on the interior.

Seat
AVAILABLE SEAT STYLES BUCKET SEAT Comfortable, durable, and suitable for paddling while sitting. Positioned lower to keep weight low in the hull.

Options
SEAT MOUNTING FOR TANDEM CANOES FIxED, RIVETED SEATS An aluminum frame is riveted to the hull to mount fixed (non-sliding) seats in tandem composite canoes 16'6" or longer. The seat can be bucket, web, or cane on canoes with aluminum or wood gunwales. This method stiffens the hull by integrating the seats into it. The seats are low for sitting, but can be raised and angled down slightly for kneeling. FIxED, PLATE HUNG Royalex tandems and a few composites have seats hung from the gunwales with aluminum plates. Many people like the looks of this method. It suits web or cane seats, but can't be used on wood gunwales. We place these a bit higher than riveted seats so they serve to sit or kneel. FIxED, DOWEL HUNG Fixed web or cane seats suspended from the gunwales using wood dowels are standard on Royalex canoes with wood gunwales. Optional for composite hulls with wood gunwales and web or cane (but not bucket) seats. Best for paddling while kneeling, because seat is positioned a bit higher to reduce stress on the dowels. SLIDING SEATS A sliding bow seat is standard for composite tandems over 16' and optional for Royalex tandems 17' or longer. A sliding stern seat is optional for composite tandems. Bucket seats are standard, but web or cane may be substituted. The seat is mounted on a slide-frame riveted to the hull. The seat is slightly lower for sitting, and to improve stability. CENTER SEATS A tandem may have a web or cane center seat added for solo use. It is suspended from the gunwales using plates or dowels depending on the trim. SEAT MOUNTING FOR SOLO CANOES SLIDING SEATS Sliding bucket seat on a floor-mounted, sliding assembly, and adjustable foot brace are standard on most composites. Positioned low but can be raised slightly. A web or cane seat may be substituted. Some Ultra-light hulls may have the seat suspended for kneeling. HEIGHT/ANGLE ADJUSTABLE Standard on the Rendezvous, Vagabond, Wilderness, and Argosy. This plate-hung seat has two height settings and can be level to sit, or angled to kneel, with position secured by a handy cord lock. Web seat is standard. Cane may be substituted.

Standard for all composite solo canoes except the Vagabond, and standard for tandems 17' or longer. Web or cane seats may be substituted at no cost. Bucket seats are not standard on Royalex and are an option only for 17'-plus Royalex tandems. WEB SEAT Cool, comfortable, and suitable for sitting or kneeling. Positioned a bit higher for leg comfort. Standard for shorter composite tandems, all Royalex canoes and with all-wood trim. Cane seats may be substituted, but not always bucket seats. Our wood frames are heavily varnished for longevity. CANE SEAT Cool, comfortable and suitable for sitting or kneeling. Positioned a bit higher for leg comfort. Cane seats have a classic appearance and are especially beautiful with wood trim, but are less durable. Cane seats are a no-cost option on all of our models.

General Touring
General touring canoes are versatile boats that do everything well. For people who look forward to day trips, fishing, easy weekend adventures, or a few days canoe camping, our touring canoes are the best choice. Stable, maneuverable, and able to haul a fair amount of gear, our touring canoes build confidence in developing paddlers. They vary in length from 15 feet to 18 feet, but all have generous width and depth, a shallow-arch bottom, and 1 or 2 inches of rocker.

Our Kevlar MN II let's us travel further, faster, with less effort than any other canoe we've ever been in.
-Bruce & Jackie Gordon, OH

Performance Touring
Performance touring canoes are sleek and efficient. They track like an arrow and glide like no other canoe perfect for paddling from the wilds of Canadas Quetico Provincial Park to the far reaching stretches of the Amazon. From bow to stern, our performance touring canoes are ingeniously contoured for efficiency. They are longer than our general touring canoes (from 166 to 186), slimmer (33- 35 wide) and have average depth to shrug off wind. Arched bottoms increase the hulls speed. They reward good paddling technique by gliding farther on each stroke than any other category of canoe.

Down River
Our versatile Down River canoes give you a solid advantage in all kinds of moving water, from the shallow sweeps of prairie rivers like the Niobrara to the meandering currents of smaller rivers like the Root River, which carves a path through the blufflands of southeast Minnesota. These versatile boats differ in capacity, but all have at least two inches of rocker, generous flare to the sides and depth in the hull. More rocker equals greater maneuverability a valuable characteristic in moving water. It also softens the effects of crossing sharp eddy lines, where contrary currents tug at your canoe. Down River canoes are also buoyant enough to run dry in lesser grade rapids and stable and seaworthy enough to not be bothered by external forces when handling quick moving waters.

It has added depth and volume to handle rough water and even whitewater, and plenty of rocker in the keel for maneuverability. The Argosys ability to lean predictably in tight turns builds confidence. We recommend it to intermediate and advanced paddlers. 27

Whitewater
In swift rivers, rocky creeks, swollen flowages and wherever the water runs wild, our Whitewater canoes keep you high and dry, while delivering the joy and exuberance that drew you out there. These tough canoes are the real deal, with steeply rockered keel lines (2 to 3) for superb maneuverability, whether youre slipping down rocky Class III waters in Wisconsin or plunging down the big open flows of the West. The shallow arched hulls are contoured for final stability in hard leans, while the deep hulls, and flared bow and stern sections keep the water outside where it belongs.

To take on big brawling wilderness rivers like the Yukon or the Flathead, you need solid skills and a very capable, capacious canoe. The Cascade is Wenonahs largest whitewater tandem suited perfectly for extended whitewater trips.
