Government/Leaders Hammurabi united the Sumerian city-states after the fall of Akkadian Empire Code of Hammurabi (pictured at left) was important legal legacy of Hammurabi. Babylonian Empire taken over by Hittites, Kassites, then Assyrians. CultureBabylon was a religious center protected by the mighty god Marduk. Babylonians paid tribute to their main DIETY by writing songs to honor him (ENUMA ELISH) and during the religious festival of AKITU (which meant renewal). This harvest festival marked the beginning of the new year. Spring festivals like this are still celebrated today by Persians (Noruz). Retained Akkadian language for official use. Used Sumerian language for religious purposes.
