Perfect Beaches
Most of Portugals beaches have the right to display a Blue Flag, which guarantees the quality of the sand, water, services and support facilities to be found at the site.
While the sea in the north is cool and rough, the water is calmer and warmer in the south. All along the coast, you can find vast expanses of sand ideal for long walks, small sheltered coves, beautiful rock formations by the waters edge and flame-coloured cliffs. The idyllic nine-kilometre-long beach at Porto Santo, in the archipelago of Madeira is a clear invitation to linger and sunbathe after a dip in the sea. In the Azores, the dark-coloured sand of the beaches confirms the islands volcanic origin.
