shell alexia 50
cylinder lubricant for low-speed crosshead diesel engines
shell alexia 50 is a premium quality cylinder lubricant designed for use in all low-speed crosshead diesel engines which burn residual fuel with sulphur content higher than 1.5%wt. it is particularly suitable for the new generation of highly rated, fuel-efficient, low-speed marine diesel engines operating with higher pressures and higher liner wall temperatures. shell alexia 50 is blended from high viscosity index base oils and additive technology developed by shell.
Main aPPLications
n
Cylinder lubrication of low-speed marine diesel engines which burn residual fuel with sulphur content higher than 1.5%wt. Shell Alexia 50 is suitable for use in applications where high levels of acid stress occur. high levels of acid stress can occur if liner wall temperatures are too low, charge air temperatures are too low or lubrication feed rate is not sufficient to ensure a suitable bn throughput for acid neutralisation.
PerforMance sPecifications
Approved by all manufacturers of low-speed crosshead diesel engines.
PerforMance benefits
improved engine reliability n outstanding acid neutralising properties which help to prolong the life of components. n Minimal deposits on pistons, piston rings, ring grooves, under piston spaces and in cylinder ports. n Low cylinder and piston ring wear with typical cylinder wear rates below 0.05 mm per 1000 hours due to enhanced boundary lubrication properties. Lower maintenance costs n Keeps engines exceptionally clean, minimises maintenance requirements and allows the periods between overhauls to be extended. re-assurance n Completely stable in storage under all the widely varying conditions encountered aboard ship. n Proven ability to keep engines clean, and control wear and scuffing in the latest engine designs. n Compatible with all normal oil seal materials.
advice
n
Applications where the fuel sulphur content is consistently below 1.5%wt should be discussed with your Shell representative. Please note that due to its high additive content, it is not advisable to mix Shell Alexia 50 with any other cylinder lubricant. Advice on applications not covered in this leaflet may be obtained from your Shell Representative.

Main aPPLications
n
Cylinders of low-speed crosshead diesel engines burning fuels with sulphur content below 2%wt, where the designer recommends a lower base number (bn) oil to reduce the risk of "sudden severe wear" or scuffing.
advice
Advice on applications not covered in this leaflet may be obtained from your Shell Representative.
PerforMance features
n
reduced piston deposits The reduced ash level of Shell Alexia LS helps to avoid excessive piston top land deposits, which can sometimes build up when 70bn oils are used with low sulphur fuel. Good piston ring and port cleanliness Shell Alexia LS contains hidden detergency, not reflected in the bn of the product. This enables it to keep the ring belt and scavenge airports clean in spite of the reduced bn. Greater feed rate flexibility The control of deposits and lower ash allows Shell Alexia LS to be used over a wider range of feed rates with less danger of excessive deposits than a 70bn cylinder oil.

Medium-speed industrial or marine propulsion and auxiliary engines, burning residual fuel oils, which create conditions of moderate oil stress. These conditions usually occur: - in engine designs more than 5 years old, or - where oil consumption is 1g/kWh or more, or - in newer designs where load factors are predominantly 85% or less, or - where fuels with sulphur <3% are in use. Marine engine reduction gears and certain other ship-board applications, where specialist lubricants are not required. Medium-speed engines burning residual fuel need very specialised lubricants. heavy fuels contaminate the oil with asphaltenes, requiring special types of detergency to avoid sludges. The combustion of high sulphur fuels produces sulphur acids, which cause high wear rates of piston rings and cylinder liners unless neutralised by a high basicity reserve in the oil. The oil is in service for very long periods, so centrifugal separators are used to remove water and combustion contaminants from the oil.
PerforMance benefits

Medium-speed industrial or marine propulsion and auxiliary engines, burning residual fuel oils, which create conditions of very high oil stress. These conditions usually occur: - in newer engine designs, with flame rings, especially from Wartsila, - where oil consumption is <0.5g/kWh, - where load factors are >90%, - where fuels with sulphur >3% are in use. Medium-speed engines burning residual fuel need very specialised lubricants. heavy fuels contaminate the oil with asphaltenes, requiring special types of detergency to avoid sludges. Liner LacquerinG
The medium-speed diesel engine is becoming more demanding to lubricate. higher engine efficiencies are being achieved through engine designs, which incorporate higher cylinder-pressures, higher combustion temperatures, and the use of very high-pressure fuel injection. in some modern distillate fuelled engines, these conditions may lead to the formation of a layer of brown or black lacquer on the cylinder liner surfaces. This can fill in the honing pattern, resulting in a loss of oil control and runaway oil consumption. The condition is particularly common in severe operations (e.g. overload or high torque conditions). There is also evidence that it is more common where low sulphur (<0.5% wt) distillate fuels are in use.
highly rated medium-speed diesel engines operating under high load or overload conditions. General ship application, including gears, where specialist lubricants are not required.
benefits
improved reliability n excellent piston and crankcase cleanliness, which helps to maintain engine efficiency. n Load carrying properties required for use in reduction gears. Lower maintenance costs n excellent liner lacquer control that maintains lubricating oil consumption at its normal level. n A high level of protection against bore polishing another cause of high oil consumption. re-assurance n Protection for engines where cylinder liner lacquering is likely to occur.

shell tellus s2 v
Previous names: Shell Tellus T
Long fluid life Maintenance-saving Shell Tellus S2 V fluids help extend equipment maintenance intervals by resisting thermal and chemical breakdown. This minimises sludge formation and provides excellent performance in the industry standard ASTM d 943 ToST (Turbine oil Stability Test), providing better reliability and system cleanliness. Shell Tellus S2 V fluids also have good stability in the presence of moisture, which ensures long fluid life and reduces the risk of corrosion and rusting, particularly in moist or humid environments. highly shear stable viscosity modifiers help minimise variations in the fluid properties throughout the fluid drain interval.
The unique additive system in Shell Tellus S2 V, in combination with superior cleanliness (meeting the requirements of max iSo 4406 21/19/16 class, ex Shell filling lines. As recognised by din 51524 specification, the oil is exposed to various influences with transport and storage that could effect the cleanliness level) helps reduce the impact of contaminants on filter blocking, allowing both extended filter life and use of finer filtration for extra equipment protection. Shell Tellus S2 V fluids are formulated for fast air release without excessive foaming to help efficient hydraulic power transfer and minimise fluid and equipment impacts of cavitation-induced oxidation that can shorten fluid life.
outstanding wear protection Proven zinc-based anti-wear additives are incorporated to be effective throughout the range of operating conditions, including low load and severe duty high load conditions. outstanding performance in a range of piston and vane pump tests, including the tough denison T6C (dry and wet versions) and the demanding Vickers 35VQ25, demonstrates how Shell Tellus S2 V fluids can help system components last longer. Maintaining system efficiency The extended temperature range capability of Shell Tellus S2 V allows efficient operation of mobile equipment from cold start to normal operating conditions. Superior cleanliness, excellent filterability and high-performance water separation, air release and anti-foam characteristics all help contribute to maintaining or enhancing the efficiency of hydraulic systems.
aPPLications
n
Mobile/exterior hydraulic applications hydraulic and fluid power transmission systems in exposed environments can be subject to wide variations in temperature. The high viscosity index of Shell Tellus S2 V helps deliver responsive performance from cold start conditions to full load, severe duty operation. Precision hydraulic systems Precision hydraulic systems require excellent control of fluid viscosity over the operating cycle. Shell Tellus S2 V provides greater temperature-viscosity stability compared to iSo hM fluids that can help improve the performance of such systems. For more severe operating conditions, longer fluid life and enhanced efficiency, the Shell Tellus S3 and S4 ranges offer additional performance benefits.
coMPatibiLity
Shell Tellus S2 V fluids are suitable for use with most hydraulic pumps. however, please consult your Shell Representative before using in pumps containing silverplated components.
fLuid coMPatibiLity
Shell Tellus S2 V fluids are compatible with most other mineral oil based hydraulic fluids. however, mineral oil hydraulic fluids should not be mixed with other fluid types (e.g. environmentally acceptable or fire resistant fluids).

extended maintenance intervals Shell heat Transfer oil S2 is based on carefully selected highly refined mineral oils and resists oil cracking, oxidation and thickening. This provides extended oil life, provided efficient fluid heating and good pump circulation is ensured, such that film temperatures on the heater surface do not exceed the limits above. system efficiency Low viscosity enables excellent fluidity and heat transfer over a wide temperature range. Shell heat Transfer oil S2 also has a low vapour pressure so resists cracking. This minimises the formation of volatile decomposition products; these would require recovery via expansion chamber and condensate collector. wear protection Shell heat Transfer oil S2 is non-corrosive and has high solvency this reduces deposit formation by holding oxidation products in solution and keeping internal surfaces of heat exchangers clean.
The life of Shell heat Transfer oil S2 depends on the design and usage of the system. if the system is well designed and not subjected to abnormal workloads, the life can be for many years. it is important to monitor oil condition regularly as rates of change in physical characteristics are more significant than actual values. Reduced grease consumption at high temperatures, as grease resists melting and subsequent leakage due to the use of the latest diurea thickener technology developed by Shells in-house expertise in Japan. Reduced maintenance costs since lower bearing replacement rates can be achieved due to the excellent anti wear properties that are available from the latest technology diurea thickened greases. Lowered total labour costs, due to the extended lubrication intervals and less downtime that results from using the latest in high performance greases Avoidance of synthetic products which can have detrimental effects on cages and seals, when high quality mineral oil based products outperform in terms of life of even fully synthetic Lithium complex greases. Simplified maintenance programs can be established, resulting from the multipurpose capabilities of this grease and long service lives that are possible.

storing lubricants Packages containing lubricants should whenever possible be stored under cover where they will not be exposed to the weather. Small packages such as tins should always be kept in covered storage, as should any package, whatever its size, once it has been opened and its contents partially used. When outside storage of unopened drums is unavoidable, however, certain simple precautions must be observed. The drums should preferably be on their sides and wooden dunnage or runners should be used to keep them clear of the ground and to prevent rusting of the undersides. They should never be stacked directly on a surface containing clinker, which is particularly corrosive to metal. The drums at each end of a stack must be securely wedged to prevent movement. Regular inspection should be carried out with a view to the detection of leaks and to make sure that identification markings remain clear and legible. if, for any reason, drums have to be stored on their ends, they should be raised off the ground and stored upside down (i.e. with the bungs at the bottom). Failing this, they should be tilted so that rainwater cannot surround and submerge the bungs. Water contamination is undesirable, whatever the grade of lubricant, and it is not always realised that moisture can enter a drum through what appears to be a perfectly sound bung. A drum standing in the open is subjected to the heat of the day and of course, cools down again at night. This results in expansion and contraction of the contents with the effect that the air in the space above oil level is subjected, during the day, to slightly higher than atmospheric pressure and, at night, to slight vacuum. These changes in pressure may be sufficiently great to cause a pumping action, known as breathing, in which air is forced out of the drum during the day and drawn into it at night. if, therefore, the bungs through which this breathing takes place are surrounded by water, some of this water may be sucked into the drum and, in the course of time, considerable quantities may accumulate. once the seals have been broken and packages opened, there is always a danger that, unless the packages are kept properly closed when not in use, impurities such as dust, sand and fibre may enter them. Such contaminations eventually find their way into machinery and can cause damage by abrasion or, by blocking oilways, can result in a complete breakdown due to lack of lubrication. An oil drum, or other package, should never be opened by cutting a large hole in it or by completely removing one end, since, even if the hole is kept covered by, for example, a wooden or metal lid, the chances of contamination are greatly increased. Similarly, it is bad practice to dip an open container into the oil since, not only does this allow dust to enter, but the outside of the dipper itself may be dirty. drums of oil should, therefore, be placed on their sides on wooden cradles of convenient height and the oil dispensed by means of a tap under which a drip tray is placed. Alternatively, a drum may be stood on its end and the oil withdrawn by means of a hand pump, the pump intake being inserted into the large bunghole. When oil is stored in bulk, it is possible that water or condensation will accumulate and fine dust finds its way into the tanks with the result that, eventually, a layer of sludgelike material builds up at the bottom of the tanks and leads, in time, to contamination of the oil. Consequently, it is advisable to have storage tanks fitted with dished or sloping bottoms provided with drain cocks, which will enable dregs to be drawn off periodically cleaned out. insofar as greases are concerned, the drum must, by necessity, have a large opening and, to avoid as far as possible the entry of dirt and water, it is important that the lid or cover should always be replaced firmly and securely as soon as requirements have been taken. extremes of temperature are not good for lubricants, which should not be stored in an unduly warm place; equally, it is not wise to leave them for long periods in conditions of extreme cold.
handling lubricants The benefit of good, clean storage can be largely nullified if a lubricant becomes contaminated in transit from the store to the machines. The containers used for transporting lubricants on a site and for the storage of small working quantities must be kept clean and should be provided with lids to prevent the entry of dust and dirt. They should be washed periodically with kerosene, care being taken to mop up and dry them before using them again. Similarly, funnels and other pieces of apparatus must always be kept scrupulously clean, rags or wipers being used for this purpose. Cotton waste or woolen rags should not be used as they tend to leave behind fibres which will eventually find their way into machinery and impair the flow of oil.

it is advisable to have separate, clearly marked containers for such grade of oil or grease so that contamination of one with another does not take place. used and dirty oil should be put into special containers and stored in separate, clearly labelled receptacles until disposed of. every precaution must be taken to see the used lubricants are not allowed to contaminate fresh oils and greases.
in general, cleanliness precautions are even more important with grease than with oil. There is always the chance that impurities in oil may sink to the bottom of the tank or container out of harm's way; with grease, this cannot happen and any grit or other contaminant which gets into the grease is bound to find its way into lubricators and machinery sooner or later. Grease is more susceptible than oil to the effects of temperature, and high temperature or prolonged exposure to even moderately high temperatures (e.g. tropical sunshine) may cause oil to separate out with the result that the grease loses some of its lubricating properties. Petrolatum (petroleum jelly) and certain types of grease can be made liquid by heating and, on cooling, will regain their former condition, but these exceptions and most greases will be ruined if treated in this way. never, therefore, heat a grease to make it fluid. The lubrication of machinery should be supervised by a responsible person and should be made a routine procedure. For instance, when a machine requires oilcan applications daily, it should become routine to do this job each morning before commencing to use the machine. Where grease lubrication is called for weekly, this should be done, for instance, first thing on Monday morning or last thing before shutting down for the weekend. each operator should know which grades of lubricant are recommended for the equipment in his charge and supplies of the correct lubricants and the handling equipment should be readily available to him. As lubricants are dispensed, the quantities should be measured and a record maintained. Storeroom records should show the quantities issued and records should be kept for each machine or unit. by this means, regular checks can be made on consumptions and any marked changes noted. These should be investigated at once. increased consumption is quite often the first sign that a machine is in need of repair, or that its lubricating system requires adjustments; on the other hand, it may mean overlubrication by the operator.
Shell lubricants, and related products such as protectives, metal working fluids, heat treatment oils etc, present little or no hazard to the users provided they are properly used. This can be achieved by taking reasonable care to keep them off the skin, away from the eyes and to avoid breathing their vapours and mist. To ensure that the use of Shell lubricants and related products will be safe and without risk to health, the guidelines given should be followed. in the relatively few cases where the nature of the product requires additional precautions, these are given in the appropriate Shell Product information leaflet.
GeneraL advice
Where occasional short-term contact is involved, Shell lubricants and related products are relatively harmless materials. They are well tolerated by intact normal skin. no unusual hazards should therefore be involved in their use provided good standards of personal and industrial hygiene are observed. Frequent and prolonged contact with mineral oils can in some cases give rise to various forms of skin irritation and in exceptional circumstances,
more serious conditions such as skin cancers. The types of oil associated with the most serious skin conditions appear to be those which have been lightly refined and which contain relatively more polycylic aromatics. Prolonged inhalation of oil mist, fumes and vapours is to be avoided and steps should be taken to ensure that any free oil mists do not exceed a threshold limit value of 5mg per m3. Lubricants containing lead compounds may constitute a special hazard since in this form, lead can be absorbed through the skin, although currently there are no known cases of lead poisoning arising from this cause. Leaded oils should noT be used in oil mist systems, as inhalation of such oils could constitute a health hazard. Since lubricants and related products can become contaminated during service, particular care should be taken to minimise contact with used oils. iT iS eMPhASiSed ThAT ALL TheSe RiSKS ARe ViRTuALLY nonexiSTenT iF ReGuLAR And PRoLonGed ConTACT WiTh The SKin And exPoSuRe To MiST, FuMeS And VAPouRS iS AVoided. hygiene and safety precaution for the worker To ensure that workers are not at risk, it is necessary for them to practise good standards of personal and industrial hygiene. They should: a) use oil permeable gloves or, if these cannot be used, suitable oil repellent type barrier creams. b) Avoid unnecessary contact with oil by using protective clothing and ensuring that machine splash guards are properly adjusted. c) not put oily rags or tools into pockets, especially trouser pockets. d) not use dirty rags for wiping oil off the skin. Abrasions may be caused by metal particles and swarf embedded in the rag and lead to subsequent infection. e) Remove metal particles and swarf from machines with the implements provided. f) obtain first aid treatment at once for any injury, however slight. g) Wash regularly, especially before meals, before using the toilet and after work, to remove oil from the skin. They should use soap or special cleaners provided. Solvents such as kerosene (paraffin), gasoline (petrol), etc. should not be used to remove oil from the skin. use a conditioning cream after washing, where provided. h) not wear oil soaked clothing. Working clothing should be changed and suitably cleaned regularly. Care should be taken to prevent ordinary clothing, especially underclothing from becoming oily. i) RePoRT AnY SKin AbnoRMALiTY on AnY PART oF The bodY And SeeK MediCAL AdViCe WiThouT deLAY. j) Attention is drawn to the danger of accidents with high-pressure grease guns when grease can be injected under the skin. spillage Spilt product should be absorbed with sand, earth or mineral absorbent and disposed of in accordance with local regulations. in the event of a large spillage, steps should be taken to prevent pollution of drainage systems, rivers and waterways or any other infringements of local legislation.
Product Precautions
type i Petroleum based lubricants and related products These embrace non synthetic oil, grease and compound products with or without addictives. These products have a low order of acute toxicity and could be slightly to moderately irritating to the skin and eyes on prolonged or repeated contact, but are unlikely to cause skin sensitisation. Products of this kind manufactured from petroleum base oils which have not had the polycyclic aromatics content reduced to the same extent as highly refined base oils may, under conditions of gross or repeated contact, cause keratosis and in extreme cases, skin cancer. Products with these base oils are not recommended where such conditions can occur, nor for use in oil mist applications or situations where oil mist can form. oils containing lead compounds can be considered as moderately toxic in terms of chronic toxicity and should not be used for oil mist applications. type ii Petroleum based lubricants and related products containing solvents These embrace non-synthetic oil, grease and compound products with or without additives and containing a significant proportion of light distillates such as white spirit, kerosene or other solvents e.g. chlorinated solvents. These products have a low order of acute toxicity and could be slightly to moderately irritating to the skin and eyes on prolonged or repeated contact and may cause skin sensitisation.
it is expected that the vapours given off will be irritating to the eyes and mucous membranes. Some of these products contain a chlorinated hydrocarbon and particular care should be taken to avoid inhaling these vapours. Local regulations and hygiene standards should be adhered to. Smoking in the vicinity of such vapours can be hazardous because of the possible formation of toxic fumes. The principal danger with these products is the aspiration of liquid into the lungs. This can occur if vomiting takes place after ingestion (swallowing). type iii synthetic type lubricants and related products These embrace chemical products manufactured with or without additives which are essentially composed of synthetic base fluids such as organic esters, triaryl phosphate esters and glycols; they also include water based chemical solutions. These materials have a low order of acute toxicity and could be slightly to moderately irritating to the skin and eyes on prolonged or repeated contact. in situations where phosphate ester fluids are used, no eating or drinking should be permitted, protective clothing and gloves should be worn where exposure is likely and residue on the skin should be removed by washing.

3. nLGi Grease classifcation The commonly used grease consistency classification is that established in the uSA many years ago by the national Lubricating Grease institute. This classifies greases solely in terms of their hardness or softness; no other property or performance level is taken into consideration. The classification consists of a series of consistency ranges, each of which is defined by a number (or numbers) 000 to 6. The consistency is defined by the distance in tenths of a millimetre a standard cone penetrates a sample of the grease under standard conditions at 25C.
