Camera

Shots, Angles and Movement. Shots: 1) Extreme long shot The extreme long shot is taken from miles away of a scene, usually used to establish a location and to set the scene of the movie. It is normally for exterior settings. 2) Long shot A long shot is generally used to show the characters life sized and to display from head to toe in the frame. 3) Medium shot This shoots the character from waist up and is generally used for dialogue scenes. The background is not important, as it has been established in earlier shots. 4) Close up This shows little background and focuses either on a persons face or a particular item of interest. It is thought of being an intimate shot. 5) Extreme close up The extreme close up is a shot that a human eye wouldnt recognize. It is used for dramatic effect and no background is shown. Angles: 1) Birds eye view The camera is directly overhead and puts the viewer in a god like view showing everything else as inferior and insignificant. 2) High angle The camera is elevated to make the characters seem insignificant or scary. It is also used to include the scene. 3) Eye level This is a neutral angle. It is set with the actors heads in focus to make it seem like a normal view. 4) Low angle This increases height and gives a feel of importance to those in the shot. It is typically used to disorientate the viewer. 5) Oblique angle The tilted camera angle is often used in horror films. It is used to see what the character sees and to become their eyes. Movement:

1) Pans The camera scans the horizon while resting on a tripod. It is used to follow an object keeping it centre frame. 2) Tilts The same as Pans but used vertically. 3) Tracking The camera is placed on a moving vehicle in order to follow something. It portrays movement. 4) Hand-held shots It gives a jerky effect often used in horrors. It also gives a sense of realism and brings the audience into the scene. 5) Crane shots A camera is attached to a crane in order to get high up shots that also capture movement like tracking. 6) Zoom lenses It changes the magnification of the image without moving the camera. It can zoom quickly, a smash zoom, or slowly depending on the effect wanted. 7) Aerial shot Usually taken from a helicopter, the aerial shots are used to capture the environment and set the scene. This is often showed at the start of movies.
