Itinerary for WFB 185 & 287 Summer 2013

Field Herpetology

The Week

Monday, May 20 Prior to class: Pack up your books and gear for a week and bring a lunch (Optional) Take some pressure off yourself by completing some species sheets prior to class

Morning:

9 AM, leave campus from Aiken loading dock

Afternoon:

Trip to BOV Museum and Audubon in Huntington Stream salamanders, woodland amphibians, pools, egg-masses Lunch at Parren's Wood Turtles at Steve Parren’s residence on Silver Street in Monkton Herptile Conservation in Vermont

Evening:

Arrive at our home base in Hubbardton around 5:30, fix your own dinner*

PM, Evening herping, depending on weather (Morgan Road in Salisbury) Write up all other species during this week (4 per day) Spend night at house in Castleton

Tuesday, May 21 Prior to class:

Fix & eat your own breakfast, pack your lunch, and be ready to leave at 9 AM

Morning:

9 AM leave for Glen Lake in Castleton

Afternoon:

Lunch at Glen Lake leave for Herrick Road (Benson)

Evening:

Arrive at house in Castleton around 5:30, fix your own dinner

8 PM Amphibians #2 and calls (and/or NTRS)

Write up all other species during this week (4 per day)

Spend night at house in Castleton

Wednesday, May 22

Prior to class:

Fix & eat your own breakfast, pack your lunch, and be ready to leave at 9 AM

Morning:

9 AM leave to set turtle traps and survey if time (Lake Hortonia-Sudbury, Steven’s Orchard-Orwell)

Afternoon:

Lunch at Buckner Preserve Herping at Buckner Preserve, Ward Marsh, West Haven

Evening:

Return to house in Castleton around 5:30 PM, fix your own dinner

8 PM Reptiles #2 (and/or NTRS)

Write up all other species during this week (4 per day) Spend night at house in Castleton

Thursday, May 23

Prior to class:

Fix & eat your own breakfast, pack your lunch, and be ready to leave at 9 AM

Morning:

9 AM, leave to check traps in Sudbury and Orwell

Afternoon:

Lunch in Orwell Survey at Brandon Gap in Goshen and Bear Brook in Rochester

Evening:

Return to house in Castleton around 5:30 PM, fix your own dinner

PM Guest Speaker Doug Blodgett on Rattlesnakes (and/or NTRS) Write up all other species during this week (4 per day) Spend night at house in Castleton

Friday, May 24 Prior to class:

Fix & eat your own breakfast, pack your lunch, and be ready to leave at 9 AM

Morning:

9 AM, Independent Survey (Quarries east of Glen Lake)

Afternoon:

Lunch at house in Castleton Review Slides and tapes at house

Evening:

Fix your own dinner Finish all your data sheets and study Spend final night at house

Saturday, May 25 Prior to class:

Fix & eat your own breakfast, pack your lunch, get all your gear and food into the vans, clean up,

and be ready to take your exam at 9:00

Morning:

9:00-11:00 Exam

Afternoon:

Finish clean up, lunch on lawn at house Trip to UVM arriving around 3 PM

* We will stop at grocery stores for shopping every day before returning to our home base.
