DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A LABORATORY TECHNICIAN 1. Courteously and respectfully welcomes the patient to the extraction room. 2. Performs blood extraction Checks patient request and order number Asks patient name Confirms labeled tubes to that of patient data Extraction procedure is performed Brings specimen to the laboratory for processing 3. Receives specimen from old or new client transactions along with annual physical examination clients Accepts specimen from new transaction client Checks label and quantity of the specimen Places specimen at the central receiving area Brings specimen to the laboratory Accepts specimen from old transaction client Checks label and quantity of the specimen Asks the patient for the receipt to confirm the date of transaction Places specimen at the central receiving area Brings specimen to the laboratory Accepts the routing slip brought by the clients for annual physical examinations Signs the routing slip before accepting the specimen brought in by the client Checks label and quantity of the specimen Informs the client to submit routing slip to the reception area after all required procedures are performed Places specimen at the central receiving area Brings specimen to the laboratory 4. Processes and prepares specimen for send out Checks send out samples like serum, plasma whole blood smears tissue samples For serum plasma and whole blood samples: Accepts the specimen Freezes serum or plasma samples Does NOT freeze WHOLE BLOOD samples Checks label and quantity of the specimen Properly closes and covers the specimen and assures the proper labels are present Prepares the documents required for specimen transfer Places specimen in a bucket of ice Transports specimen

For serum tissue samples: Checks label and quantity of the specimen Rejects the specimen if sample does not pass the required standards set by Best diagnostic corporation Main branch Accepts the specimen that has complied with the set standards of BDC Main branch Places specimen in appropriate container containing formalin Properly closes and covers the specimen and assures the proper labels are present Prepares the documents required for specimen transfer Places specimen in a bucket without ice Transports specimen For smear samples: Stained slides must be dry and covered before transport Unstained slides must be fixed in proper fixative before transport Checks the label of the slide Places slides in a shutter proof container Properly closes and covers the properly labeled glass slide Prepares the documents required for specimen transfer Transports specimen 5. Processes specimens for hematology, clinical microscopy, serology and clinical chemistry alternately with the Medical technologist 6. Performs examinations for clinical microscopy, hematology, serology and clinical chemistry alternately with the Medical technologist 7. Records results accurately to the logbook for clinical microscopy, hematology, serology and clinical chemistry alternately with the Medical technologist 8. Encodes and prints the results accurately within the required period of time alternately with the Medical technologist 9. Monitors reagents and supplies of the section alternately with the Medical technologist Controls and checks possible sources of wastage in the section Maintain a system of control to assure adequate supply in the section Make necessary requisition of supplies weekly 10. Maintain orderliness, safety and proper work flow in the working areas alternately with the Medical technologist 11. prepares and submits monthly reports alternately with the Medical technologist 12. Make a written endorsement of significant issues, problems or concerns that occurred during the day alternately with the Medical technologist

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITEIS OF A MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST 1. Receives specimen brought to the laboratory 2. Rejects urine, stool, seminal fluid, sputum and microbiologic samples, whole blood and clotted blood samples: If samples are insufficient, improperly collected, hemolysed, underfilled or overfilled the samples are rejected Informs medical technologist in charge, extraction room (phlebotomist), receiving area and reception area for sample recollection 3. Accepts urine, stool, seminal fluid, sputum and microbiologic samples, whole blood and clotted blood samples 4. For clotted blood: Process clotted blood samples and properly separates serum. Assures that proper label is attached to the sample and divides serum samples according to tests required per section: Separates samples for transport Checks specimen amount and label of specimen for chemistry and serologic samples Writes down the name of patient in appropriate logbook Processes and performs serum samples along with appropriate quality controls on equipments, reagents and analytical procedures to guarantee the accuracy of tests done Reconstitutes control for clinical chemistry, such as lyphochek as needed Confers with medical technologist in charge and pathologist for verification of results Records results accurately to its individual logbook Encodes results from logbooks to computer Maintains cleanliness of the laboratory section ( working and non working areas) 5. For urine stool, seminal fluid, sputum and microbiologic samples, and whole blood: Checks quantity and label of the specimen Writes down the name of patient in appropriate logbook For urine and seminal fluid samples, place specimen into properly labeled tubes For stool, sputum and microbiologic samples, smear specimen into properly labeled slides For whole blood samples, process them directly Process samples along with appropriate controls Confers with medical technologist in charge and pathologist for verification of results
