The economy of the United States is the largest among all the nations of the world. At 14.52 trillion USD, the GDP generated by this colossal economy is the highest. Its Gross National Income (GNI) per capita is also among the highest, and is estimated at US $47,240. The major sectors comprising the economy of Untied States are Retailing, Energy, Agriculture, Manufacturing, and Finance. The country remains the second-largest consumer of energy in the world, and most of the energy needs are fulfilled through petroleum. Even though manufacturing is not the leading sector of the economy, it is enough to remain number one in the whole of the world. Airplane manufacturing is a major activity in this sector. The country is also the largest trading nation of the world, with most of the trade happening with Japan, China, and European Union. One particular concern for the US economy is the rising debt, which as of 2009 was at US $50.7 trillion. This is more than 3.5 times the GDP, and is owed by various businesses and governments. The recession in 2008 hit the economy very hard, and the recovery is still being affected. This was popularly known as the sub-prime mortgage crisis. US Topography
The United States of America has a diverse landscape as is shown in the US Topographic maps. In eastern USA there are flat and broad coastal plains which line the Atlantic area. The stretch from New York City to the Texas-Mexico border is a gulf and this includes the Florida peninsula as well. Further inside eastern USA there are a number of temperate forests and rolling hills. The Appalachian Mountains have created a column of low mountains, which separate the seaboard from the Mississippi Basin and the Great Lakes. North-Central USA Topography In north-central USA the five Great Lakes of USA are located. Four of these form part of the US Canada border. The southeastern part of United States is filled up with subtropical forests. The mangrove wetlands are located close to the gulf coast of USA, especially in Florida. Mississippi River Basin Topography The US topographic maps also reveal that the Mississippi River basin and its big eastern tributaries - Tennessee River and Ohio River - are located to the west of the Appalachian Mountains. The Midwest and the Tennessee and Ohio valleys are filled with productive farmland and rolling hills and stretch to the Gulf Coast in the south. The Great Plains of US are located to the west of the Mississippi River. 5.

The name "America" is often used to refer to the United States, but until the political formation of the United States after the Revolutionary War, this designation referred to South America only. Contemporary use of the term to refer to the United States underlines that country's political and economic dominance in the western hemisphere. Such use of this designation is impolitic from the perspective of Canadians and Latin Americans. The United States has an Anglo majority that is politically and economically dominant. One of the defining characteristics of the country as a nation is its legacy of slavery and the persistence of economic and social inequalities based on race. U.S. culture has significant regional inflections. Most Americans are aware of these differences despite the fact that these regions have experienced economic transformations and that Americans are a mobile people who often leave their regions of origin. The Northeast is densely populated. Its extensive corridors of urbanization have been called the national "megalopolis." Once a leader in technology and industry, the Northeast has been overtaken in those areas by California's Silicon Valley. The Midwest is both rural and industrial. It is the home of the family farm and is the "corn belt" and "breadbasket" of the nation. In the Great Lakes area of the upper Midwest, the automobile and steel industries were central to community and economy. As those industries declined, the upper Midwest became known as the rust belt. The South was shaped by its secession from the Union before the Civil War and is associated with slavery and with subsequent battles over civil rights for AfricanAmericans. In contemporary terms, these are the sunshine states, retirement havens, and new economic frontiers. The West, the last national frontier, is associated with national dreams and myths of unlimited opportunity and individualism. It has the nation's most open landscapes. 6.

History
Stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific and encompassing more than 3.79 million square miles, the United States of America has a remarkable diversity of landscapes and climates, including the Southern swamps and Everglades, the immense Great Lakes, the soaring Rocky Mountains, the windswept Great Plains, the arid deserts of the Southwest and over 12,000 miles of coastline. More than 10,000 years before Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas in 1492, ushering in an era of European colonization of the New World, the nomadic ancestors of modern Native Americans began settling across the North American continent. In the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, immigrants who came to America seeking economic opportunity or religious freedom struggled to build thriving communities in the uncharted wilderness, often to the detriment of indigenous peoples. By the 1770s, some 2.5 million European colonists had settled in America. In 1776, those living in Great Britains 13 colonies declared their independence, sparking the Revolutionary War and transforming the United States of America into an autonomous nation. During the 19th and 20th centuries, 37 new states were added as the country expanded from coast to coast and beyond, even as internal conflicts such as the Civil War and the fight for equal rights for all citizens threatened to divide the population. In the 20th century the United States played a major role in both world wars and emerged as a leading global power. Today it boasts the largest economy on the planet and is home to 310 million people; California, Texas and New York are its most populous states.
