indices - the human development index (HDI), the gender-related development index (GDI), the gender empowerment measure (GEM), and the human poverty index (HPI-1 for developing countries and HPI-2 for selected OECD countries) - can be calculated using EXCEL, based on the current methodologies described in the latest global Human Development Report. A separate worksheet, "Estimating the earned income, " explains how the income component of the GDI and GEM Each worksheet contains a set of sample calculations for one country for a specific index, with built-in EXCEL formula. It also includes sample data and answer keys for other countries, which you could use for practice and verifying your results. To replicate a specific step, you may copy the formula in the sample cell and adjust for the relevant cell(s) you are working on.
Using this tool, you could also input your own data and calculate the relevant human development indices For more detailed explanations about the composite indices, please refer to Technical note 1: Calculating the human development indices which can be found towards the back of each global Human Development Report.
Introduction "Calculating the Indices using EXCEL" is a tool that helps you learn how the composite human development indices - the human development index (HDI), the gender-related development index (GDI), the gender empowerment measure (GEM), and the human poverty index (HPI-1 for developing countries and HPI-2 for selected OECD countries) - can be calculated using EXCEL, based on the current methodologies described in the latest global Human Development Report.
