Summer Internship Announcement

River Source Internship Working with Cochiti Pueblo Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and other interested Pueblos south of Cochiti Dam The long-term objective of this project is to support the improvement and restoration of the Santa FeRiver in culturally-appropriate ways based on Cochiti Pueblo values for generations to come and assisting other Pueblos with watershed management. 3 Positions Available: A. River Source Intern: 2 Positions Who can apply: 16-20 year-old students, School or job experience in Natural Resource Management or Environmental Science is preferred but not required. Students from Cochiti or neighboring Pueblos will be given preference due to vested interest. Interns will work with River Source staff under the guidance of Cochiti Pueblo DNR staff on the improvement and restoration of the Santa Fe River. B. Advanced River Source Intern: 1 position Who can apply: 18-25 year-old students, School or job experience in Natural Resource Management or Environmental Science is required. Students from Cochiti or neighboring Pueblos will be given preference due to vested interest. Interns will work with River Source staff under the guidance of Cochiti Pueblo staff on the improvement and restoration of the Santa Fe River. Advanced Intern must be willing to monitor and supervise other interns and may be required to perform more advanced tasks.

The work will focus on:


Sampling, sorting, and analysis of benthic macroinvertebrates at up to three sites. Using Cochiti DNRC Project Monitoring Standard Operating Procedures for Photo-point establishment; establishing semi-permanent photo monitoring stations, as well as using GIS through GPS to document locations. Vegetation sampling at up to four locations in the riparian area and in the adjacent grasslands at up to four sites along the Santa FeRiver

Transferring all data including GPS coordinates, copies of field data sheets and summary analyses of the data to Cochiti DNR. Assist in planting or propagating desired plants such as wild spinach, cottonwoods and willows. Assist DNR staff with other tasks as needed including mending fences, cleaning up dead and down materials and breaking down beaver dams to keep water flowing (if necessary), attendance at cultural events, and helping with Feast Day preparation (if the timing is right).

Other Requirements: Transportation to Cochiti Pueblo and to River Source office in Santa Fe Application form completed School transcripts if applicable Computer Skills Deadline: Monday May 6th
