Hacking the Human Brain: The Next Domain of Warfare

sixth and arguably more important warfighting domain emerging: the human brain. This new battlespace is not just about influencing hearts and minds with people seeking information. Its about involuntarilypenetrating, shaping, and coercing the mind in the ultimate realization of Clausewitzs definition of war: compelling an adversary to submit to ones will. And the most powerful tool in this war is brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies, which connect the human brain to devices. Current BCI work ranges from researchers compiling and interfacing neural data such as in the Human Conectome Projectto work by scientists hardening the human brain against rubber hose cryptanalysis to technologists connecting the brain to robotic systems. While these groups are streamlining the BCI for either security or humanitarian purposes, the reality is that misapplication of such research and technology has significant implications for the future of warfare. Where BCIs can provide opportunities for injured or disabled soldiers to remain on active duty post-injury, enable paralyzed individuals to use their brain to type, or allow amputees to feel using bionic limbs, they can also be exploited if hacked. BCIs can be used to manipulate or kill. Recently, security expert Barnaby Jack demonstrated the vulnerability of biotechnological systems by highlighting how easily pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) could be hacked, raising fears about the susceptibility of even life-saving biotechnological implants. This vulnerability could easily be extended to biotechnologies that connect directly to the brain, such as vagus nerve stimulation or deep-brain stimulation. Outside the body, recent experiments have proven that the brain can control and maneuver quadcopter drones and metal exoskeletons. How long before we harness the power of mind-controlled weaponized drones or use BCIs to enhance the power, efficiency, and sheer lethality of our soldiers? Given that military research arms such as the United States DARPA are investing in understanding complex neural processes and enhanced threat detection through BCI scan for P300 responses, it seems the marriage between neuroscience and military systems will fundamentally alter the future of conflict. And it is here that military researchers need to harden the systems that enable military application of BCIs. We need to prevent BCIs from being disrupted or manipulated, and safeguard against the ability of the enemy to hack an individuals brain. The possibilities for damage, destruction, and chaos are very real. This could include manipulating a soldiers BCI during conflict so that s/he were forced to pull the gun trigger on friendlies, install malicious code in his own secure computer system, call in inaccurate coordinates for an air strike, or divulge state secrets to the enemy seemingly voluntarily. Whether an insider has fallen victim to BCI hacking and exploits a system from within, or an external threat is compelled to initiate a physical attack on hard and soft targets, the results would present major complications: in attribution, effectiveness of kinetic operations, and stability of geopolitical relations. Like every other domain of warfare, the mind as the sixth domain is neither isolated nor removed from other domains; coordinated attacks across all domains will continue to be the norm. Its just that military and defense thinkers now need to account for the subtleties of the human mind and our increasing reliance upon the brain-computer interface. Regardless of how it will look, though, the threat is real and not as far away as we would like especially now that researchers just discovered a zero-day vulnerability in the brain. To all Malaysian and all humans in this lovely EARTH, We have only one place to live and not any other place, In this Blog I have reported these issues to Malaysian Government and did ask them to give me permission to alert( create awareness campaign) all Malaysian citizens using my own money , Inspector General Police Department Kuala Lumpur , Special Branch(FBI) told me they will not give me any permission or letter to campaign awareness to all Malaysian citizens about these crime, I wrote letter to Home Affairs and Public Safety office on 18th May 2011, till to date they refuse to reply my letters. Coercive Mind Control Tactics

Terminology note: Today Mind control or brainw ashing in academia is commonly referred to as coercive persuasion, coercive psychological systems or coercive influence. The short description below comes from Dr. Margaret Singer professor emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley the acknow ledged leading authority in the w orld on mind control and cults. a short overview Coercion is defined by the American Heritage Dictionary as: 1. To force to act or think in a certain manner 2. To dominate, restrain, or control by force 3. To bring about by force. Coercive psychological systems are behavioral change programs w hich use psychological force in a coercive w ay to cause the learning and adoption of an ideology or designated set of beliefs, ideas, attitudes, or behaviors. The essential strategy used by the operators of these programs is to systematically select, sequence and coordinate many different types of coercive influence, anxiety and stress-producing tactics over continuous periods of time. In such a program the subject is forced to adapt in a series of tiny "invisible" steps. Each tiny step is designed to be sufficiently small so the subjects w ill not notice the changes in themselves or identify the coercive nature of the processes being used. The subjects of these tactics do not become aw are of the hidden organizational purpose of the coercive psychological program until much later, if ever. These tactics are usually applied in a group setting by w ell intentioned but deceived "friends and allies" of the victim. This keeps the victim from putting up the ego defenses w e normally maintain in know n adversarial situations. The coercive psychological influence of these programs aim to overcome the individual's critical thinking abilities and free w ill - apart from any appeal to informed judgment. Victims gradually lose their ability to make independent decisions and exercise informed consent. Their critical thinking, defenses, cognitive processes, values, ideas, attitudes, conduct and ability to reason are undermined by a technological process rather than by meaningful free choice, rationality, or the inherent merit or value of the ideas or propositions being presented.

How Do They Work?

The tactics used to create undue psychological and social influence, often by means involving anxiety and stress, fall into seven main categories. TACTIC 1

Increase suggestibility and "soften up" the individual through specific hypnotic or other suggestibility-increasing techniques such as:Extended audio, visual, verbal, or tactile fixation drills, Excessive exact repetition of routine activities, Sleep restriction and/or Nutritional restriction. TACTIC 2 Establish control over the person's social environment, time and sources of social support by a system of often-excessive rew ards and punishments. Social isolation is promoted. Contact w ith family and friends is abridged, as is contact w ith persons w ho do not share group-approved attitudes. Economic and other dependence on the group is fostered. TACTIC 3 Prohibit disconfirming information and non supporting opinions in group communication. Rules exist about permissible topics to discuss w ith outsiders. Communication is highly controlled. An "in-group" language is usually constructed. TACTIC 4 Make the person re-evaluate the most central aspects of his or her experience of self and prior conduct in negative w ays. Efforts are designed to destabilize and undermine the subject's basic consciousness, reality aw areness, w orld view , emotional control and defense mechanisms. The subject is guided to reinterpret his or her life's history and adopt a new version of causality. TACTIC 5 Create a sense of powerlessness by subjecting the person to intense and frequent actions and situations w hich undermine the person's confidence in himself and his judgment. TACTIC 6 Create strong aversive emotional arousals in the subject by use of nonphysical punishments such as intense humiliation, loss of privilege, social isolation, social status changes, intense guilt, anxiety, manipulation and other techniques. TACTIC 7 Intimidate the person w ith the force of group-sanctioned secular psychological threats. For example, it may be suggested or implied that failure to adopt the approved attitude, belief or consequent behavior w ill lead to severe punishment or dire consequences such as physical or mental illness, the reappearance of a prior physical illness, drug dependence, economic collapse, social failure, divorce, disintegration, failure to find a mate, etc. These tactics of psychological force are applied to such a severe degree that the individual's capacity to make informed or free choices becomes inhibited. The victims become unable to make the normal, w ise or balanced decisions w hich they most likely or normally w ould have made, had they not been unknow ingly manipulated by these coordinated technical processes. The cumulative effect of these processes can be an even more effective form of undue influence than pain, torture, drugs or the use of physical force and physical and legal threats.

How does Coercive Psychological Persuasion Differ from Other Kinds of Influence?
Coercive psychological systems are distinguished from benign social learning or peaceful persuasion by the specific conditions under w hich they are conducted. These conditions include the type and number of coercive psychological tactics used, the severity of environmental and interpersonal manipulation, and the amount of psychological force employed to suppress particular unw anted behaviors and to train desired behaviors. Coercive force is traditionally visualized in physical terms. In this form it is easily definable, clear-cut and unambiguous. Coercive psychological force unfortunately has not been so easy to see and define. The law has been ahead of the physical sciences in that it has allow ed that coercion need not involve physical force. It has recognized that an individual can be threatened and coerced psychologically by w hat he or she perceives to be dangerous, not necessarily by that w hich is dangerous. Law has recognized that even the threatened action need not be physical. Threats of economic loss, social ostracism and ridicule, among other things, are all recognized by law , in varying contexts, as coercive psychological forces.

Why are Coercive Psychological Systems Harmful?

Coercive psychological systems violate our most fundamental concepts of basic human rights. They violate rights of individuals that are guaranteed by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and affirmed by many declarations of principle w orldw ide. By confusing, intimidating and silencing their victims, those w ho profit from these systems evade exposure and prosecution for actions recognized as harmful and w hich are illegal in most countries such as: fraud, false imprisonment, undue influence, involuntary servitude, intentional infliction of emotional distress, outrageous conduct and other tortuous acts.
