KASTURI PAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT BBA-3, ROLL-62

Corporate Social Responsibility At Infosys, the distribution of wealth is as important as its legal and ethical creation. A strong sense of social responsibility is therefore an integral part of their value system. Sustainability is a business imperative for Infosys, and therefore not optional.

GREEN INITIATIVE 1) GREEN IT

Infosys initiated a sustainable overhaul of its IT infrastructure based on server and storage consolidation, blade server rollouts, and virtualization. The project transformed legacy IT infrastructure to a 'green' system through a futureproof solution. It pre-empted substantial investment, and achieved energy savings with a significant reduction in the carbon footprint. Their initiative resulted in several benefits: Operational Benefits

Streamlined IT infrastructure management High availability and reliability of virtual infrastructure Reduced IT manpower costs Realignment of IT teams for value-added strategic services Financial Benefits

Direct cost savings of US$ 130,000 Annual savings of US$ 70,000 on data centre maintenance costs Reduced server count by 98%, achieving significant cost reduction Reduced Total Cost of Ownership Annual energy cost savings up to US$ 100,000 Green strategy is confined to greening of IT infrastructure where newer and better technologies are leveraged to reduce energy requirements. E-waste management is yet another important facet of green IT.

2) GREEN PLM (GREEN PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE MANAGEMENT)

Green PLM is a conceptual framework that compliments the life cycle assessment/ analysis of products. The green governing factors involve three components, namely, ENVIRONMENT, MATERIAL & ENERGY. The main underlying principle is:Produce products using a green compliant material which requires less energy and have significantly low impact on environment. Green material X Low energy X Less environmental impact = Tangible benefits (GREEN PRODUCT)

3) iSmart INTELLIGENT POWER STRIP

A product of Infosys labs, iSmart is intelligent power strips that can not only supply power from an electrical source to devices connected to it in enterprise environments but can also monitor their energy consumption level on a continuous basis. This smart power strip solution detects energy wastage intelligently and allows users to optimize their power consumption requirements.

Renewable energy: Making Green Power competitive

How they started? Started with a mandate to procure green energy Found that Indian regulations does not support & rather levy charges to switch to green energy Going out of state grid & getting power from other sources meant serious premium & administrative hurdles

Their approach-Changing Policy? Realizing the regulatory issue, instead taking easy route of paying premium & becoming carbon neutral, we chose to work on regulation Presented our paper explaining Issues and Opportunities in Green Power to regulators at Central & State levels

What they achieved? Succeeded in persuading Karnataka regulators for removing cross subsidy Green power now is cheaper than Grid power. Started trial at Mysore campus for 600,000 units of hydro power.

The Road Ahead... Based on these developments, they have initiated the process of increasing our power mix from renewable energy.

Promoting renewable energy

604700 Litres per day saving 23000 units of power daily Committed to meet hot water requirement from Solar One of the largest solar water heater installations in India Piloting micro wind turbine at Mangalore

Building Performance: Design is Legacy

Water Conservation measures

Pump pressure has been reduced and set at 4 kg/cm2in all pump rooms this ensures adequate flow rate in taps and reduces wastage Flow rate in taps 4 lpm and shower heads to 9 lpm Pre flush in Urinals has been stopped in most locations & post flush flow rate in urinals has been standardized to 1.5 litres per flush Flow rates in flush has been set to 6 litres per flush Flow restrictors fitted in all hand faucets and shower heads has reduced the flow rate by 50%

Recycling and Reuse of water

The entire waste water generated is treated and reused in all our campuses for landscaping In Hyderabad, Mangalore city, Pune & Jaipur -recycled water will also be used for flushing and HVAC make up water In Bangalore the flushing needs of park 6 is met with recycled water saving about 80,000 litres per day of fresh water Water Sustainable MeasuresCreated artificial lake to capture the water from rainfall -Pune, Mangalore, Hyderabad development centres Created 19 lakes in Hyderabad development Centers Biodiversity 40000 trees planted at Mangalore campus in last 2 years
