Freescale Offers Technology for Life

Modern medical breakthroughs have raised the average global life expectancy in developed nations to over seventy-five years, according to a recent study by the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC). As public health has advanced and new pharmaceutical drugs have been developed, the landscape of prevalent pathologies has changed, too. Where once viral and bacterial infections were the leading concerns of clinicians, today chronic and degenerative diseases are the most worrisome. The World Health Organization predicts that by 2030 the two leading causes of death will be heart disease and cancer by a wide margin. Freescale believes semiconductor technology will play a critical role in the development of new technologies to assist with patient monitoring, diagnostics, therapy and imaging. We are focused on what we can do as a semiconductor company to help provide people a more healthy and active life. By designing our products to the highest safety and reliability standards, devices running with Freescale components will work when it counts. The electronic components behind tomorrows medical devices arent seen by everyone, but we recognize that they work to benefit all people who are touched by this technology. This is what we mean when we say, Freescale offers technology for life.

Welcome to Freescale Medical Solutions

Freescale has focused on solving some of the worlds most important technology challenges for over fifty years. Whether the question has been how to ensure that cell phones can connect people across the world or how to harmonize all of the safety features on a car, or ensure the safety of airline passengers, Freescale chips have been the answer. Freescale brings that same drive and innovation to the medical industry. The convergence of an aging population and breakthrough technological advances has created endless opportunities for automated medical devices. These devices are designed to provide future health benefits for millions of people by applying advanced electronic technology to home health care, clinical activities and medical imaging. Regardless of the end use, developers of medical devices all face similar problems. The need to balance processing requirements with power consumption, ensure a fast time to market and navigate the regulatory environment is common to all healthcare applications. Freescale designs a range of products so that developers can choose processors, analog and sensor components and RF amplifiers to meet the requirements of their designs. Medical technology developers face a number of challenges, but Freescale believes that choosing the right silicon shouldnt be one of them.

Home Portable Medical

The home portable medical market is one of the fastest growing market segments in the medical devices industry. The consumer population is more healthconscious than ever before, and that is reflected in the devices that are now common in the home, including portable heart rate monitors, blood pressure monitors, digital thermometers, electronic blood glucose monitors and digital scales that measure body fat. As clinicians look for new ways to monitor patients under natural circumstances, new telehealth devices are being invented. All of these portable home medical gadgets share the common need for long battery life, robust data processing and a wired or wireless communication interface. Freescales microcontrollers (MCUs) offer the perfect mix of high processing capabilities and low power consumption. Furthermore, as a pioneer in the communications market, Freescale offers solutions for wired and wireless interfaces, including USB, IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee technology. Freescale microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based pressure and acceleration sensors can be used to acquire physical parameters. User interfaces embedded with proximity sensors enable medical friendly buttons and touch screens that can be sanitized quickly and easily. Lastly, Freescale offers a focused, integrated analog portfolio that enables maximum battery life via power management ICs and allows precise and accurate conversion of natural, continuous signals to digital signals that MCUs can process. Whats more, medical customers can engage with us for specific custom solutions that leverage our core competencies in precision analog, mixed signal and power management technologies.

Diagnostics and Therapy

Reliability and accuracy are key considerations for diagnostics and therapy devices. These devices are used in critical situations when physiological events need to be recognized quickly and addressed appropriately. Whether a physical therapist is using a high-tech stationary bicycle to help a patient undergoing physical rehabilitation, or an electrocardiogram is monitoring the heartbeat profiles of patients after surgery, these devices need a CPU core that is powerful enough to acquire, process and interpret several parameters at once. Freescales 32-bit processors do all of this and more. Freescale offers a full spectrum of processors (ColdFire, i.MX and Power Architecture) in terms of performance and integration. Integrated USB drivers facilitate convenient data transfer from a device to a PC for processing or long-term storage. LCD interfaces, common on ColdFire and i.MX ARM9 processors, provide clinicians and patients a meaningful way to visualize clinical data in real time. Lastly, integrated Ethernet allows for data sharing in a variety of important ways. Diagnostic or therapeutic medical devices can be positioned for the home or clinical market. Freescales Controller Continuum enables development on an 8-bit platform for simple home devices, which can then be upgraded to 32-bit platforms as new application needs arise for the clinical market. The Controller Continuum serves as a powerful resource for building fully integrated, scalable medical solutions for the home or the clinic.
