regarding the benefits of immunization, motivating women for institutional delivery, proper utilization of the untied fund etc. Participatory dialogue was mostly used for communicating the NRHM entitlements to them and resolving their issues. Major challenge was faced in motivating the SHGs to be involved in the GKS utilizations and resolving the internal conflicts among them. But this problem is minimised now. COMMUNITY: Most of the people were unaware of the NRHM entitlements. They only knew that Rs.1400 was provided to them for institutional delivery. There were many cases of ASHA taking a part of the JSY and demand of money by the Hospital authorities was also heard. People were hardly aware of Janani Express and its operational areas. The matter of Janani Express drivers misbehaving and demanding money were common in the availing areas. After BISWA's intervention people were found to demand their basic rights from the service providers. Immunization schedules are now remembered and followed by most of the members

without even the help of the ASHAs. Other than assisting the delivery cases, the ASHAs now assist the patients for Ante Natal Care (ANC) and Post Natal Care (PNC). ASHAs of Meghpal and Tampersingha - the most interior and Maoist affected areas of Jujomura are now referring cases to the Jujomura CHC. The village untied funds i.e. GKS funds are now properly utilised along with the Swasthya Kantha (health walls) which are now being updated in most of the villages. Janani Express is now utilised by almost every assessable villages. Gaon Kalyan Samiti (GKS) that the general village community was not aware is now being monitored by the Community and issues being brought up and discussed with the 'BISWA' staff. Jujomura which once was known for the highest in IMR and MMR has recorded the lowest by the latest reports. Major problem faced was resolving the conflict among the community and the service providers. 'BISWA' has successfully resolved the conflict and established trust among the service providers and community.

The staff of 'BISWA' celebrated 62nd Republic Day in the office premises with gaiety and grandeur. The chairman of 'BISWA' Dr. K C Malick unfurled the National Flag in presence of all the staff and appealed them to work hard for nation building. "We should be proud that we have the biggest democracy in the world. So also our constitution that guarantees us every right is also a unique one," Dr. Malick said. We have achieved a lot after independence. The development in science, agriculture, medicine, road communication, health, education, defence, space research, atomic energy, and all other fronts are no doubt praise worthy. Still we have to become at par with the developed nations and this could only be possible if all of us work hard to bring our nation towards the path of progress at speedy pace, Dr. Malick added. Speaking on Odisha, the Chairman said that poverty is the arch foe of this state rich in mineral and all other natural resources. If we keep working hard and implement all programmes of 'BISWA' in letter and spirit then poverty in Odisha will just remain in the pages of history, he added. "What we need is commitment and sincerity," Dr. Malick said to the staff.

Country, as it seems now, has virtually turned to be a corruption hub. Everybody expresses concern for this. But people who matter and can bring an end to it hardly bother for the reason may be best known to them. It might be so that perhaps they have their own share in the 'Corruption Cake'. Since a dog with a bone in mouth can't bark, our big shots might be facing similar flimsy situation for which they are unable to take any action in spite of strong public demand. BISWA's Intervention & Impact in Various Fields for Welfare Measures

BISWA as a leading NGO of the country has been working for various developmental works for the people as well as for the entire nation with a vast network. At the same time, it is also making continuous endeavour to sensitise people and make them aware of different policies and welfare measures of the government. Following are just few glimpses PRI: 'BISWA' organised eight Gaon Kalyan Samiti (GKS) forum and two Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) trainings during the project period to sensitize the Ward Members. Prior to the meeting it was observed that the Ward Members were hardly aware of the Gaon Kalyan Samiti and were blindly signing the vouchers and cheques provided by the Anganwadi Centres. They did not play their role and were also not even aware of other members of the Samiti. But after our intervention they clearly understood the objectives of the Samiti and actively participated in the decision making process. The Swasthya Kantha (Health Walls) are now being updated and the vehicle number of Janani Express has been also incorporated. In some places, monthly meetings are being organized, ASHA and Anganwadi Workers (AWW) are also monitored. During the intervention major problem that came to notice was the conflict between the Anganwadi Workers and the Ward Members each blaming the other. So resolving the conflict and making new beginning was the most challenging part. With regular visits, organising the GKS meetings, planning of the budget expenses, etc. the conflict has been minimised to a null factor. ASHA: ASHA previously played an active part in facilitating the institutional delivery under Janani Surakshya Yojana (JSY). A series of interactions and But after the intervention, they have become very much active in their work. There had been cases of certain ASHAs who have really brought about a change and are role models for others. Due to the intervention, many of the ASHA thought 'BISWA' to be anti-ASHA, they even refused to cooperate and coordinate. Finally after a lot of dialogue and training sessions, they were convinced that 'BISWA' was not against them; rather the motto was that ever y person should perform his/her duty. SHG: 54 self help groups (SHGs) have been covered involving more than 700 SHG members for forum meeting for sensitising the SHGs on NRHM guidelines.
