Case Study
This is the story of a member of a male group named BISWA SHG Pandupada, Group No 2. One of its members, Sri Tularam Ping, is working as a peon in the local high school. Besides working as a peon he is also identified as a marginal farmer. His salary was enough to maintain the family of four but there was hardly any money for saving at the end of the month. Tularam has an ambition for a better living as well as a saving for some rainy days, but the situation did not allow him to follows

his dreams. The total annual income never exceeded Rs. 12,000/- and to manage the deficit, he used to go for cash cropping such as vegetables in addition to paddy. In order to cultivate vegetable in winter he needed to irrigate the land adequately. But he had no pump set for it. He had to use buckets and tenda (a traditional irrigation device for lifting water from wells). To improve his farming conditions, he took a loan of Rs 2,000/- from the SHG. He
cultivated capsicum, a reknowned cash crop. In this venture he made a saving of Rs. 5,000/-, which was invested for further growth. Now he could afford to hire a pump set on rental basis and that year the yield was excellent. The yield fetched him a handsome profit of Rs. 8,000/-, this time. He took a wide decision and bought a pump set of his own. This year he is planning to add another 40 decimals of land to his existing farming of capsicum. Now he is happy farmers with being a member to a successful SHG, which has taken off the entire burden he felt on his shoulders.
