EDITORIAL FROM THE CHAIRMANS DESK

BISWA has given all of you a platform to experiment your vision and mission. It is for you to take proper initiative. We must race against the race. Recently I have noticed a decline in the motivation amongst you. I have further observed that our resources are not being utilized properly? This is not a good trend at all. Your complaints should be accompanied by suggestions as well. Let us get rid of the bureaucratic attitude. This is the sign of a true Development Worker. Let us be more accountable and more responsible. Being in the Developmental Sector, we should establish a separate identity. We should be different from common people. Otherwise we will be moving in the right direction but will never reach the destination or reach very late. Let us pledge to work as a committed social worker.

Bhawani Shankar Mishra represented BISWA on this occasion. AIDS cases are adding up rapidly in spite of our efforts to subtract it rapidly. But in any case, it must be our combined responsibility to see that AIDS cases do not multiply. Bill Melinda Gates Foundation, formed by the Microsoft giant Bill Gates has taken up the great cause to fight this menace globally. Several p r o m i n e n t p e r s o n a l i t i e s , Bollywood and Hollywood actors / actresses have joined in this initiative. It is equally alarming to note that AIDS is on rise in our State also. To check this; awareness is more important than rehabilitation. In this context, BISWA is playing a pivotal role. We h a v e o r g a n i z e d m a n y p r o g r a m m e s throughout the State. The motor-cycle rally and meeting on the World AIDS Day is a positive step in this direction. The Organisation is contemplating a long term action plan to check this menace effectively.

infections (STIs). Although majority groups have heard of AIDS, many do not know HIV is spreading and they do not believe that every human being is at risk. Those people who do know something about HIV often do not protect themselves because they lack the skills, the support or the means to adopt safe behaviors. Migration, low literacy, poverty, urbanization, unsafe sex practices and ignorance about the transmission of the disease are major factors for the spread of the killer syndrome. Counseling, educating the general people about HIV, and teaching them skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, critical thinking, decision-making and communication, improves their self-confidence and ability to make informed choices such as postponing sex until they are matured enough to protect themselves from HIV, other STDs/RTIs and unwanted pregnancies.
