T
wo years ago, this column
featured an interview with
Californian Thaddeus Cooper
who has been researching the
development of Skee-Ball for an upcom-
ing documentary film. The game was the
brainchild of Joseph Simpson, a Vineland
resident who remains largely unknown
as the inventor of this popular arcade
feature, and Coopers research not only
validates Simpsons role as creator but
also fleshes out this Vinelanders biogra-
phy. Cooper agreed to be interviewed
again by The Grapevine in advance of his
visit this week to Vineland where he will
continue his research.
Grapevine: Can you share with us
some of the discoveries youve made
over the last year?
Cooper: Working on this project has
been interesting in that almost every day
I find something new about Simpson and
the game that I didnt know. For instance,
Simpson was both a serial entrepreneur
and a serial inventor. His first patented
invention was a new type of trunk latch.
The invention was part of the 1876
Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.
Although he started out as a ticket
clerk for the Pennsylvania Railroad,
which might have been the inspiration for
inventing the trunk latch, within a few
short years he entered into his first busi-
ness venture. He started a planing mill in
Philadelphia that he ran for about five
years. The experience he gained running
the planing mill would be put to use later
when he designed and built the cabinetry
for his Skee-Ball game.
After moving to Vineland, New Jersey
he started another business, the Vineland
Knitting Mills Company, with two indi-
viduals from Philadelphia. Simpson was
President of the company, but not the
major investor.
As far as the game goes, I always won-
dered how the history of the game
became so mangled. In working on the
research, it became apparent that the
companies that came after Simpson were
more interested in getting games out the
door to their customers and less interested
in preserving the history of the game,
which makes perfect sense.
Has your viewof Simpson or Skee-
Ball changed?
My view of Simpson and his family has
definitely evolved over the last two years.
When I started the research, I didnt really
know anything about his family back-
ground. As Ive begun to assemble more
facts about Simpson and his family, it has
become apparent that his family had
money and property in Philadelphia. It
seems that his father was a successful mer-
chant. Based on my research to date, it
would seem that Simpsons family was
quite tight-knit. He and his siblings lived
with the extended family in Philadelphia
after his fathers death. Later, Simpsons
mother, aunt and siblings moved to
Vineland, New Jersey, making it their new
permanent home. A few years after moving
to Vineland all of the dwellings and property
in Philadelphia were sold, although
Simpson still had business ties to the city.
While many people might make the
assumption that being an inventor,
Simpson struggled financially, it would
seem quite the opposite was true. The
family had money, and Simpson did not
have to work to support himself.
What do you hope to discover in
South Jersey?
The Simpson family made donations to
the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian
Society over a number of years. What I am
ever hopeful to find would be diaries or
other personal papers that would give me a
deeper insight into Simpsons life and
inventions. I know what some of the dona-
tions are, including a letter to his Aunt
Sophia from Varina Davis, the wife of
Jefferson Davis (President of the
Confederacy), who was a cousin of
Simpsons. If there were diaries from the
period that he was working on Skee-Ball,
describing the trials and tribulations of
creating the game and working hard to sell
it, that would be the holy grail for the trip.
Is there a completion date for the
documentary?
Things seem to be coming together on
the picture I have of the early history of
Skee-Ball. Hopefully, some of the out-
standing questions will be answered by my
upcoming trip to Vineland, and a few more
inquiries. As soon as I can tie up those
loose ends, Ill be in better shape to start
defining the story that needs to be told and
planning the production. Both my wife and
I hope thats soon! I

nyone walking into Landis
MarketPlace these days will see
a lot of activity. A major con-
struction project on the upper
level can be seen alongside of some new
businesseand theres more to come.
The most obvious change is the con-
struction work that is taking place along
the western wall of the upper level. The
construction sets the stage for a newly
expanded Amish restaurant, moving up
from the lower level.
Imreally excited about this expansion
because it will allowthe restaurant to
expand its seating capacity, with seating to
include a lunch counter, tables, and booths.
The location of the lunch counter in the
building will be close to where the old J.J.
Newberry lunch counter was in the same
building years ago, bring this back full circle.
The other exciting aspect of this restau-
rant will be that it will be an anchor ten-
ant, which will draw more foot traffic to
the upper level and will give the upper
level a higher profile for the Landis
Avenue side of the market. The move to
the upper level will also allow the restau-
rant to be open Wednesday through
Saturday.
This will add to the hustle and bustle
already going on with some exciting new
businesses in the market. Recent ribbon-
cuttings have taken place at the A Novel
Idea, Chapter 2the bookstore that has
become a popular market destinationand
For Bodys Sakea handmade bath and
body company. We have a ribbon-cutting
for Balic Winery coming up on April 12.
A newaddition to our lineup of vendors is
Dares Feed and Pet Supply. A major part of
the Bridgeton business scene, this has been
a family business for 60 years and has a full
line of foods and accessories for your pet.
We have also had cultural events at the
market, cross promoting with the Landis
Theater Performing Arts Center , the Off
Broad Street Players, and Cumberland
Players with performances from their lat-
est productions the market. We also had a
well-received Art Appreciation Day.
Bringing art, theatre, and music to Landis
MarketPlace complements our business
activity well and more such activities will
be added to our calendar.
Future events planned include a Cinco
de Mayo celebration on Saturday May 4,
which was successful last year and will be
expanded this year, a Second Anniversary
celebration May 30 through June 1, and
lots more.

Goodbye Lucias,
Hello CompleteCare
The CompleteCare Health Network took
another step forward in their mission to
provide the community with convenient,
accessible, state-of-the-art health care.
Their planned Vineland Health Campusa
walk-in, multi-specialty health facility, which
will have all of the amenities of the best in
primary, dental, mental and specialty med-
ical carenow has a home, with their pur-
chase of Lucias Restaurant. Located at
785 W. Sherman Avenue in Vineland, this
health campus will be the latest and
largest project to date for the organiza-
tion and is set to open in 2014.
We are thrilled to have found the
perfect location for what will be our most
ambitious project to date, said Curtis
Edwards, CompleteCares Executive Vice
President. Our patients deserve the very
best in healthcare and this health cam-
pus will help us to continue to deliver it.
In spring of 2012, CompleteCare was
awarded a grant for $5 million in capital
funding to build a new health facility in
Vineland from the ground up. The new
Vineland CompleteCare Health Campus
will be a 14,000-sq.-ft., full-service facility.
To increase access to care, the new health
campus will be open extended hours week-
nights and weekends and will offer patients
a comprehensive scope of medical and
dental services including: adult medicine
and pediatrics, OB/GYN, general dentistry
and dental hygiene, mental health, podia-
try, cardiology, optometry, radiology,
minor surgery, physical rehab, on-site
pharmacy and health education classes.
Comprehensive, accessible, and most
of all affordable care is critical to keeping
our patients well, said Dr. Cheryl
Bettigole, Chief Medical Officer for
CompleteCare. Its exciting to imagine the
potential of a health campus that will pro-
vide so many services for our patients.
CompleteCare plans to demolish
Lucias Restaurant and clear the lot
before rebuilding on the property.
Anyone interested in removing and
reusing the current structure should con-
tact Curtis Edwards at 856-391-1124.
CompleteCare Health Network is a
nationally accredited health system with
18 locations throughout Cumberland,
Gloucester and Cape May Counties.

to make an appointment.

Breakfast with Dr. Rasner
A new question and answer series with everyones favorite dentist!
Q: Dear Dr. Rasner, My husband and I have been married for over 5 years and I am having a
terrible time getting him to come to the dentist due to bad dental experiences in the past.
He has seen your ads and has been in pain off and on for quite a while. He also needs to
have 2 teeth replaced that you can see when he smiles. What do you suggest to help me
get him to come see you?? Meredith Mantua
A: You dont have to do anything Meredith. I have the answers you neednow. What
happens at the first visit is positive, relaxing and most certainly, not painful. You
and your husband will have the opportunity to meet me and my awesome team.
Well talk. In 60 seconds you will know that you are in the right place. I put much
thought into how my office looks and is set up.From the lighting, to the colors to
the people I employ. It all counts. But the truth is I have worked primarily on fearful
patients for 33 years. I get it. I will explain my oral sedation method. Its quite a bit
different than your doctor giving you a valium. Its a snore fest ! When I examine
you, I dont have that little pick ready to send you through the ceiling. Just a mir-
ror and very powerful professional glasses. Whatever is going on wont get better by
itself. So give me one visit and let me take this one fear out of your life. Dr. Rasner

SJ Gas Customers Donate to CCC Scholarships
South Jersey Gas cus-
tomers are making a differ-
ence in the communitys
quality of life by participating
in a check-off campaign con-
ducted by SJ Gas to raise
money for Cumberland
County Colleges School
Counts! scholarship program.
A check for $24,348 was
recently presented by SJ Gas
President Jeffrey DuBois to
the CCC Foundation. This
represents money donated by
SJ Gas customers, who
donated $1 to School Counts!
via their gas bills.
Its inspiring that South Jersey Gas customers are stepping forward to support
School Counts! because this program is bringing a college education within the
reach of all Cumberland County high school students, CCC President Dr. Thomas
Isekenegbe said. Through the check-off campaign, South Jersey Gas is demon-
strating that they care about the community they serve.
Through the School Counts! program, high school students can earn certificates
by attending school regularly, achieving above average grades, accomplishing more
than the minimum graduation requirements and graduating on time. Cumberland
County residents who earn four School Counts! certificates are eligible for two-year
tuition scholarships at CCC.
Students win because they learn the skills needed to succeed in college and the
work place, Dr. Isekenegbe said. Employers win because they get better-educated,
skilled workers. And Cumberland County wins because a skilled work force pro-
vides essential services, and keeps and attracts businesses.
South Jersey Gas President Jeffrey DuBois, left, and Cumberland County College President
Dr. Thomas Isekenegbe hold the ceremonial check.

Four Tax Tips about
Unemployment Benefits
If you received unemployment benefits
this year, you must report the payments on
your federal income tax return. Here are
four tips from the IRS about unemploy-
ment benefits.
1. You must include all unemployment
compensation you received in your total
income for the year. You should receive a
Form1099-G, Certain Government
Payments. It will showthe amount you
were paid and the amount of any federal
income taxes withheld fromyour payments.
2. Types of unemployment benefits
include a)Benefits paid by a state or the
District of Columbia from the Federal
Unemployment Trust Fund, b)Railroad
unemployment compensation benefits,
c)Disability payments from a government
program paid as a substitute for unemploy-
ment compensation, d)Trade readjustment
allowances under the Trade Act of 1974,
e)Unemployment assistance under the
Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance
Act.
3. You must include benefits from regu-
lar union dues paid to you as an unem-
ployed member of a union in your income.
However, other rules apply if you con-
tribute to a special union fund and your
contributions are not deductible. If this
applies to you, only include in income the
amount you received from the fund that is
more than your contributions.
4. You can choose to have federal income
tax withheld fromyour unemployment ben-
efits. You make this choice using FormW-
4V, Voluntary Withholding Request. If you
complete the formand give it to the paying
office, they will withhold tax at 10 percent
of your payments. If you choose not to have
tax withheld, you may have to make esti-
mated tax payments throughout the year.
For more information on unemployment
benefits see IRS Publication 17 or 525. You
can download these free booklets and Form
W-4V from the IRS.gov website or order
them by calling 800-829-3676.
Medical/Dental Expenses
If you paid for medical or dental expens-
es in 2012, you may be able to get a tax
deduction for costs not covered by insur-
ance. The IRS wants you to know these
seven facts about claiming the medical and
dental expense deduction.
1. You must itemize. You can only claim
medical and dental expenses for costs not
covered by insurance if you itemize deduc-
tions on your tax return. You cannot claim
medical and dental expenses if you take the
standard deduction.
2. Deduction is limited. You can deduct
medical and dental expenses that are more
than 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross
income.
3. Expenses paid in 2012. You can
include medical and dental costs that you
paid in 2012, even if you received the serv-
ices in a previous year. Keep good records
to show the amount that you paid.
4. Qualifying expenses. You may include
most medical or dental costs that you paid
for yourself, your spouse and your depend-
ents. Some exceptions and special rules
apply. Visit IRS.gov for more details.
5. Costs to include. You can normally
claim the costs of diagnosing, treating, eas-
ing or preventing disease. The costs of pre-
scription drugs and insulin qualify. The
cost of medical, dental and some long-term
care insurance also qualify.
6. Travel is included. You may be able to
claim the cost of travel to obtain medical
carecost of public transportation or an
ambulance as well as tolls and parking fees.
If you use your car for medical travel, you
can deduct actual costs, including gas and
oil. Instead of deducting the actual costs,
you can deduct the standard mileage rate
for medical travel23 cents per mile for 2012.
7. No double benefit. Funds from Health
Savings Accounts or Flexible Spending
Arrangements used to pay for medical or
dental costs are usually tax-free
Youll find more information in IRS
Publications 502 and 969, available at

Hispanic and Women Farmers
Claims Due Soon
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack
reminds Hispanic and women farmers and
ranchers who allege discrimination by the
USDA in past decades that there are fewer
than 30 days remaining in the filing period
closing March 25, 2013.
The process offers a voluntary alterna-
tive to litigation for each Hispanic or
female farmer and rancher who can prove
that USDA denied his or her application
for loan or loan servicing assistance for dis-
criminatory reasons for certain time peri-
ods between 1981 and 2000.
As announced in February 2011, the vol-
untary claims process will make available
at least $1.33 billion for cash awards and
tax relief payments, plus up to $160 million
in farm debt relief, to eligible Hispanic and
women farmers and ranchers. There are no
filing fees to participate in the program.
The Department will continue reaching
out to potential Hispanic and female
claimants around the country to get the
word out to individuals who may be eligi-
ble for this program so they have the
opportunity to participate.
Call center representatives can be
reached at 1-888-508-4429. Claimants may
register for a claims package by calling the
number or visiting www.farmerclaims.gov
(forms may be downloaded the from the
website). All those interested in learning
more or receiving information about the
claims process and claims packages are
encouraged to attend meetings in your
communities about the claims process and
contact the website at any time or the call
center telephone number Monday through
Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Claims Period: September 24, 2012 -
March 25, 2013.
Independent legal services companies
will administer the claims process and adju-
dicate the claims. Although there are no fil-
ing fees to participate and a lawyer is not
required to participate in the claims process,
persons seeking legal advice may contact a

Under Secretary Vilsack's leadership,
USDA has instituted a comprehensive plan
to strengthen the Department as a model
service provider and to ensure that every
farmer and rancher is treated equally and
fairly as part of "a newera of civil rights" at
USDA. In February 2010, the Secretary
announced the Pigford II settlement with
African American farmers, and in October
2010, he announced the Keepseagle settle-
ment with Native American farmers. Both
of those settlements have since received
court approval. Unlike the cases brought
by African American and Native American
farmers, the cases filed by Hispanic and
women farmers over a decade ago were not
certified as class actions. The claims process
provides a voluntary alternative to contin-
uing litigation for Hispanic and female
farmers and ranchers who want to use it.

Vineland Police
Educate Preschoolers
On Wednesday, February 6, two
Vineland police officers visited Christ
The Good Shepherd Preschool. The
officers talked to the children about
the many things police officers do to
keep them safe and why it is impor-
tant to always cooperate with an offi-
cer. Here, one of the officers displays
a stop sign as the children look on.
VHS Sign Language Teacher Honored
Juliana Frankenfield, an American Sign Language Teacher at Vineland High
School, has been selectedas a "Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction" by the
National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) for excellence in teaching and
for the encouragement and dedication to the academic success of her students.
Frankenfield, an ASL teacher in Vineland since 2005, was nominated for the
award by Emily Shellhamer, a former student now a junior at VHS.
The "Educator of Distinction" award is a special program of NSHSS, founded by
Nobel in 2002 to highlight the accomplishments of high school students who
have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community commit-
ment, as well as to foster their continued success.
"Your nomination as an 'Educator of Distinction' is a testament to the impact
you are making as a World Language educator to her students," wrote Nobel, in a
letter to Frankenfield.
Frankenfield, a South Jersey native, completed her undergraduate studies at
Toccoa Falls College in Georgia.
"I learned a little bit of sign language in high school and (after college) I want-
ed to learn a second language so I took some classes. When I went for my gradu-
ate work I decide to go to Gallaudet University, which is the university for the deaf
in Washington, D.C. I got my Masters degree there in linguistics and then when I
moved back to the area the ASL program had started."
Prior to working in Vineland, Frankenfield taught elementary school in Bridgeton.
"We are so honored to have Ms. Frankenfield," said JoAnne Negrin, the district
supervisor of world languages. "Her dedication and hard work are evident in her
classroom, and it is wonderful to see her excellence recognized by a national
organization and by her former student in this way."
Pictured: Frankenfield, as she instructs one of her classes.

VOTED
BEST
OF THE
BEST
TIP TOP KENNELS was started in 1974
by Gertrude and Tom Getler. The current
owners, Pam and Rick Demmy, pictured,
purchased the thriving kennel in 1984.
The business now has been owned by the
same family for longer than any other
kennel in the area. The Demmys celebrate
their 29th year this month. Just two were
employed in 1984, a number that has
grown to five currently employed. They
added a dog grooming salon when they
purchased the kennel.
Tip Top has been voted Best of the
Best groomer or One of the Best ken-
nels for two years in a row. They offer dog
obedience training and have been voted
among the best trainers for several years.
Tip Tops motto is Where your pets
care is a family affair. That motto is as
true today as it was in 1984. Rick and
Pams son was five years old when they
bought the kennel. He worked there for
many years and continues to help out on
weekends. Every dog is treated like family.
The Demmys recently installed a new
heating system, resulting in a warmer,
cozier kennel for all. They are currently
painting and primping in preparation for
the summer season. They are happy to be
surviving the recession and, if Mother
Nature stops throwing large storms at
their customers, they hope to see an
upswing in business soon.
This month, Rick and Pam Demmy celebrate
their 29th year as owners of Tip Top Kennels.

P
rudential Fox & Roach, Realtors con-
gratulates Rosie Smith, a Vineland
Office Sales Associate, named by Five
Star Professional as one of the New Jersey
area recipients of the 2013 Five Star Real
Estate Agent award. The award winners
appeared in a special section in the March
issue of New Jersey Monthly.
Five Star Professional partnered with
New Jersey Monthly to conduct research to
identify a select group of real estate agents
who are exceptional in both their ability
and their commitment to overall satisfac-
tion. The final list of 201 New Jersey Five
Star Real Estate Agents is a select group,
representing less than 2 percent of real
estate agents in the area. A survey was pro-
vided to all New Jersey area residents who
purchased a home over $150,000 within an
eight-month period (September 2011 to May
2012). Respondents were asked to evaluate
real estate agents they knew, through per-
sonal experience, based on a list of criteria.
Prudential Fox &Roach also recently hon-
ored Cumberland County Sales Associates for
their sales performance for November and
December 2012 at a monthly Breakfast of
Champions. Sales Associates include David
Rickel, Sr. VP &Regional Manager; Rick
Gullo, Vineland (honored for outstanding
contributions to the Trident Group); Margie
Venturi, manager, Vineland; Don Sullian,
Vineland; Joan Docktor, President, Prudential
Fox &Roach; and Bill Stewart, VP &Regional
Manager, Trident Mortgage.
Prudential Fox & Roach, Realtors, the
nations fifth largest provider of home serv-
ices in the United States, is an independent-
ly owned and operated member of BRER
Affiliates, Inc. As the Tri-State areas real
estate leader, the company has more than 57
sales locations and 3750 sales associates.
Through its affiliate, the Trident Group, the
company provides one-stop shopping and
facilitated services to its clients including
mortgage financing and title, property and
casualty insurance. Visit their website at
