Purpose: DivisionZiscommittedtoprovidingstudentsthenecessarytoolstoaidthemintheir developmentofknowledgethroughtheuseofsocialmedia.Socialmediaoutletsare currentlybeingusedbythemajorityofstudentsoutsideofschoolandasaDivisionwe believethatitisourdutytoworkwithourstudentstoeducatethemintheuseofproperuse ofsocialmedia.Usingsocialmediainaschoolwillallowtheteacherstoguidestudent learningtowardsresponsibleuseofsocialmedia.Socialmediagivesstudentsaccesstoa wealthofknowledgeandallowsthemtocollaborateandshapetheirlearning.Socialmedia canbeusedtocreateconnectedcommunitybasedlearningwhichcorrespondswiththe goalofDivisionZtoimplementtheprogramSchoolPlus.Usingsocialmediaprepares studentsforthechallengestheymightfaceoutsideoftheclassroom.Manyjobsnowrequire studentstohaveaworkingknowledgewithtechnologyandsocialmediatoolssoitisour hopethatwecanprepareourstudentsforlifeoutsideofschoolthroughtheuseofsocial media. B. Whataresocialmediaandsocialmediaguidelines? Socialmediareferstotheinteractionsamongpeopleinvirtualcommunitiesandnetworks. Blogs,socialnetworks,Facebook,Twitter,Flickr,MySpace,andYouTubeareexamplesof socialmedia.Socialmediaguidelinesarepoliciesthatprovideacodeofconductfor individualsusingsocialmediawithinDivisionZ.Inourschools,socialmediaguidelinesare usedtosetexpectationsofappropriatebehaviorforstudentsandstaff. C. Whydoweneedsocialmediaguidelines? SocialmediaguidelinessettheDivisionZ'sexpectationsfortheusersofsocialmediawithin theschoolenvironment.Theseguidelineswillhelpusersintheschoolbecomeawareof socialmediaandwillhelpusersaccessthistoolresponsibly.Guidelinesalsoensurethat usersrepresentthemselvesappropriatelyonline,andwillworktoensurestudentprivacyand safety.

D. WhatisCyberbullying? Cyberbullyinginvolvesthemisuseofemailsystems,textmessaging,chatroomsorother Internetbasedprogramstoharasspeoplesendingunpleasantoraggressivemessagesfor example.CyberbullyingwillnotbetoleratedbyDivisionZ.Bullyingofallkindsiswrong,and willbechallenged.Keeparecordofallbullyingincidents,eitherbysavingorprintingemails. Ifanemailortextmessageisparticularlydisturbing,orbreaksthelaw,contactyourchild's teacher(s)and/oradministration. E. Monitoring Allmessagescreated,sent,orreceivedontheDivisionZsnetworkusingsocialmediaare thepropertyofDivisionZandmayberegardedaspublicinformation.DivisionZreservesthe righttoaccessmessagessentbyusersiftheybelieveitisnecessarytodoso. Allcommunicationcanbedisclosedtolawenforcementorotherthirdpartieswithoutprior consentfromthesenderorreceiver.Therefore,studentsandstaffshouldbecarefulinhow theyusesocialmedia. 1.0 Safety&ProtectionPolicy DivisionZiscommittedtothesafetyandprotectionofourstudentswhileusingsocial mediatoolsthatwillhelpthembecomeengagedlearners.Toensureourstudents safety,therewillbestrictguidelinessetconcerningstudentsorstaffreleasingany personalinformationonline.Theseguidelineswillbecloselymonitoredstaffand studentfileswillbereviewedtoensureourstudentssafety,whichisofutmost importancetoDivisionZ. 1.1 Undernocircumstancesmaystudentsorstaffreleaseanypersonalinformation aboutthemselves,theirpeers,theirschool,andtheircommunity. 1.2 Studentsandstaffshouldnotshareanyoftheirownpicturesunlessgiven permissionbyateacheroradministration. 1.3 Studentsandstaffshouldnottakeorsharedigitalphotosorvideoswithoutthe consentoftheperson(s)intheimage.Ifthatpersonisaminorexplicitconsentof theirguardianmustbegiveninwriting. 1.4 Audiorecordingsofclassesbystudentsareprohibitedwithouttheexpress permissionoftheteacherandmustbeforlegitimatereasonsonly. 1.5 Studentsandstaffmustkeepallaccountsandpasswordsconfidentialand inaccessibletoothers. RestrictionsonSocialMediaSites DivisionZrecognizesthebenefitsthatsocialmediatoolswillhaveonstudentlearning andstrivestobeprogressiveintheiruseofsocialmedia.Howevertherearemany socialmediasitesthatDivisionZbelievesdonotcorrespondwiththedistrictsgoalsin educatingtheirstudents.Therefore,therewillberestrictionsonthesocialmediasites thatstudentsandstaffcanaccess. 2.1 Studentswillbeabletouseblogs,Wikis,GoogleDocsandothersocialmedia

toolsonlyiftheyreceivestaffpermission.Staffwillberesponsibleformakingsure thattheusesofsocialmediawithinDivisionZareusedforeducationalpurposes. StudentsandstaffwillnotbeallowedtouseFacebookorTwitterasthedistrict believesthereareothersocialmediasourcesthatwouldbemorebeneficialto studentlearning. AlthoughstudentsandstaffwillhaveaccesstoYouTube,itisnotacceptableto uploadvideooraudiofromstudentperformanceswithoutpermission.Atnotime isitpermissibletouploadentireplaysormusicalsduetocopyrightlegislation.

AcceptableUseofSocialMedia InordertofosterstudentlearningthroughsocialmediaDivisionZwillstrivetoensure socialmediawillbeusedforeducationalorprofessionalpurposesonly.Socialmedia shouldnotbeusedfordisruptiveorunauthorizedpurposes,norinanymannerthat violatesanylaw,regulation,policyorprocedure.Theserestrictionsapplytoall technologybelongingtoDivisionZandanybroughtinforuseonDivisionZproperty. 3.1 Studentsandstaffmustonlyusetheschoolsnetworktopromotetheexchange ofinformationtopromoteeducationandresearchthatisconsistentwithDivision Zsmission. 3.2 Studentsandstaffmustusesocialmediainawaywhichrespectstherightsand propertyofothers. 3.3 Studentsandstaffcanonlyaccessinformationfromsocialmediaasneeded. UnacceptableUseofSocialMedia ViolationofDivisionZsocialmediapoliciesmayresultintherestriction,suspension,or cancellationofaccessprivileges,andmayresultinotherdisciplinaryaction,civilliability orcriminalprosecutionbytheappropriateauthorities. 4.1 Sendingmaterialthatislikelytobeoffensiveorobjectionabletotherecipient. 4.2 Plagiarismandviolationofcopyrightlaws. 4.3 Viewing,sending,ordisplayingoffensivemessagesorimages. 4.4 UsinglanguagedeemedinappropriatebyDivisionZonanysocialmediasites. 4.5 Doingharmtootherpeopleortheirwork,whichinvolvestrespassingintoothers work,files,orfolders. 4.6 DownloadinginformationfromtheinternetwithoutspecificauthorizationfromIT. 4.7 UsingsocialmediaonDivisionZpropertyforpurposesthatarenotrelatedtothe educationofthestudent.
