Extreme CCTV Technology Helps Ease London's Traffic Woes

Over 600 camera systems using Extreme CCTV infrared technology have been installed in central London in an attempt to reduce traffic congestion in the downtown core of the city. The cameras are mounted on "CCTV Trees" at more than 160 entrance points around a 21 square kilometre perimeter of the overcrowded city centre. The system, instigated by The Mayor of London and known as TFL (Transport for London), uses a combination of cameras and IR (infrared) illuminators in order to capture license plate numbers. Drivers entering into the fare zone will be subject to a 5 ($12.50 CDN) once-a-day charge that can be paid at numerous convenience stores, parking garages, by telephone, by text messaging or via the internet. If the toll is not paid by midnight, a large fine is levied. Despite many naysayers who insisted such a project would be impossible to introduce, the launching of the TFL scheme on February 17th seems to have gone off without a hitch. Most news reports on TFL's first day of operation were positive. The reduction of traffic by 25% and the collection of tolls from 90% of drivers indicate a successful start for TFL. Extreme CCTV's Jack Gin, CEO and Tony Whiting, Managing Director (UK division) were in London to monitor TFL's inaugural day. "While many vehicles stayed away from the "C" zone, we were there because of it and were able to witness the effect of TFL by driving around the city center in rush hour traffic. I think most Londoners are in favor of TFL, but there is no doubt that there will be those opposed because of the charges. There is already talk of similar systems for other UK cities including Edinburgh and Newcastle, and possibly for major international cities that are suffering from similar traffic congestion that London became known for."

Extreme Tech Helps Ease Londons Traffic Woes

Extreme CCTV's UF-LED infrared illuminator, that is known for its reliable, long-life durability is the key device that provides invisible lighting to allow specially designed CCTV cameras to capture license plate information that is fed to a massive central computing center through optical fiber cables. Extreme CCTV received its supply order through its UK division, Derwent Systems early in 2002 and has been working with TFL systems integrators to this day. Extreme CCTV is proud to be part of a technology project that not only can be considered world class in many ways, but also deliver significant environmental benefits, with the toll charge being used for the improvement of public transportation. "The successful launch is testimony to the high level of sophisticated implementation of CCTV in the UK and of the position that our company holds in this technology based industry," says Gin. "We are pleased to be of service to some of the world's leading systems integrators." Right: A double decker bus on C-Day drives freely towards Harrods on an uncongested street.
