Foto Space Gallery Glenrothes Foto Space Gallery is a constituted non-profit organisation co-ordinated and organised by The Fife Foto Group. The group, which was established in 2010, is a photographic organisation supported by donations, grants, and volunteers. Since opening in 2011, Foto Space at Rothes Halls has held exhibitions by a wide variety of photographers, ranging from college graduates to nationally recognised names, working in a range of styles. Foto Space Gallery provides many ongoing exhibitions, educational programming, workshops and a facility where photographers can meet, debate, experience and share ideas. Artwork By Derek Robertson www.derekrobertson.com Born and raised in Fife, Derek Robertson works from his studio in Balmerino and since graduating in Dundee, has established a name as one of the countrys foremost wildlife and landscape artists. He exhibits all over the world and has recently been appointed as artistin-residence at Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve in Fife. This is part of the Year of Natural Scotland, a project taking place in 2013. Derek also produces narrative paintings, installations and assemblages. They often depict a fusion of personal experience and the portrayal of nature. His interests have led him to write and present a number of television programmes.

Ceramics By Moyra Stewart www.moyrastewart.com Moyra Stewart is a Scottish born ceramics artist who graduated from Edinburgh and worked in London, before emigrating to Canada. She lived in Victoria, British Columbia for 17 years running a community studio, taking part in several community arts projects and exhibiting her own work. Moyra returned to Scotland in 1999 and helped co-found Fife Arts Co-op and Steeple Arts in Newburgh, Fife. Moyra currently runs a teaching studio at the Steeple Arts Centre.

The Art of Photography: Black & White By Stuart Russell To me, black and white photography is all about creating an atmosphere. Its all about trying to convey light and dark and concentrating on physical details. It is hard to visualise something monochrome in our vibrant world and it takes a lot of creativity and imagination to create a powerful image. It is far better to take a coloured photograph, and then convert to black and white afterwards. By ignoring colour distraction, you must pay close attention looking at where light and dark are conveyed. Concentrate on the physical aspects of an image such as shape, form, and texture. You can follow the composition techniques described in my first post for ideas. Light is always important in photography and in black and white images lighting really makes a difference in depth, drama and intensity. As a nature photographer the sunlight is my main tool but you can get interesting effects using artificial lighting too. I will talk more about light in my next post. Remember to experiment with your camera and try to develop quirky techniques that support your black and white images. No photographer is the same and there is no point in aspiring to another or getting bogged down with pretension and technical details. Black and white photography is fun. Enjoy it! Create images that work visually and artistically for your own pleasure. Your own emotion, thoughts and character should be able to shine through your monochromatic images. Youll be surprised.
