Introduction
EDGE is a global radio-based high-speed mobile data rate standard that can be introduced into GSM/GPRS networks. The idea behind EDGE is to increase the data rate that can be achieved by changing the type of modulation used while still working with existing GSM and GPRS network nodes. The new modulation that is introduced is the eight-state phase-shift keying (8-PSK) which allows carrying 3 bits per modulated symbol over the radio path. In order to activate EDGE capability, the BSS software must be running with the latest Alcatel Software Release B8 version. The new BSS software was started with the B8 and EDGE trial in BSC_5_HQ with 7 BTS (15 cells). The B8 BSS software upgrade was completed successfully on 21/12/2004 and EDGE activation was completed on 02/04/2005 for the whole DST Network. This report is to provide a description on the overall of EDGE Activation activities status, including Project Deployment Milestone, and Quality of Service performance for the overall Brunei DST network with EDGE feature.

Table 2: TRX class comparison between target plan and actual implementation

EDGE actual implementation is not currently able to achieve the target plan because of: - The 2nd E1 not available for some existing cells When EDGE is activated, the secondary Abis link may be needed for some BTSs having big TRX configuration. The list of sites waiting for additional E1 is shown in Table 7. The additional E1 provision is responsible by DST. - Some sites not on-air As noticed in the table 2, there are still 22 expected new sites in the target plan, compared with the total cells of the actual implementation (5-Apr-05). For this case, we will activate EDGE immediately when the sites are on-air if possible. The list of sites not on air is shown in Table 8.

KPI/QoS Performance Result

This section presents the results of GPRS/EDGE QoS follow up during the EDGE deployment in DST network that started on 19-Feb-05 (week 7) until 2-Apr-05 (week13). However, the observation period would cover from 7-Feb-05 (one week before EDGE deployment) to 10-Apr-05 (one week after EDGE deployment). This is to check any QoS change, compared between before and after EDGE deployment.

4.1 GLOBAL NETWORK QoS

The table below presents the main GPRS/EDGE indicators referring to: - 1 week before the EDGE activation - 1 week after the EDGE activation GPRS/EDGE KPI TBF establishment DL TBF establishment success rate UL TBF establishment success rate TBF release DL TBF normal release rate UL TBF normal release rate DL TBF acceptable release rate UL TBF acceptable release rate TBF retransmission DL MCS retransmission rate UL MCS retransmission rate DL CS retransmission rate UL CS retransmission rate Before EDGE activation (2005Week 6) 96.91% 95.60% 94.57% 95.64% 2.31% 0.48% 15.14% 1.77% 1.59% 0.58% After EDGE activation (2005Week 14) * 97.49% * 96.77% 94.60% 96.42% 2.31% 0.30% 8.93% 0.96% 2.88% 0.62%

Table 9: GPRS/EDGE KPI comparision between before and after EDGE activation

* The figures in the table 9 did not include cells with EDGE activation problems i.e. MWA001_S2 & S3 and SRI001_S3. However, the problems could be solved later as following: - SRI001_S3: EDGE problem on this cell was caused by wrong DDF cabling for the secondary Abis link at BTS side. The problem was solved on 18-Apr-2005. - MWA001_S2 & S3: these cells (same site) had the EDGE problem because the transmission of the secondary Abis link was looped in the middle (not go through between the BTS and the BSC). The problem was solved on 20-Apr-2005.

4.2 QoS INDICATOR EVOLUTION

Following graphs present the main GPRS/EDGE indicators evolution for the global network during all the observation period. There are 2 pointers in all graphs: - Start (of EDGE deployment): 19-Feb-05 - End (of EDGE deployment): 2-Apr-05

DL TBF establishment success rate has been degraded during EDGE deployment due to the high number of BSS failures. Almost BSS failures are located at MWA001_S2&S3 and SRI001_S3 since EDGE was activated. Please note that the observation period was finished on 10-Apr-2005 that the reason why we could NOT see the improvement after the problems on those 3 cells were solved.

After the end of EDGE deployment, we could notice UL establishment success rate was degraded suddenly from 07/04/2005 to 08/04/2005 due to very high BSS failures at 3 cells, MSN001_S3, BER003_S3 and SRA001_3. The problem on those cells was solved by 08/04/2005. In addition, UL establishment failures due to BSS problem also got the impact from the EDGE problems at MWA001_S2&S3 and SRI001_S3. However, the problems could be solved later (SRI001_S3, solved on 18-Apr-2005 and MWA001_S2&S3, solved on 20-Apr-2005). Figure 3: DL TBF release rate - Network

DL TBF normal release rate and DL TBF acceptable release rate are roughly stable. However, there is the appearance of DL TBF drops due to blocking situation during EDGE deployment. The drops are also caused by the impact of EDGE problem at MWA001_S2&S3 and SRI001_S3. But, the problems could be solved later (SRI001_S3, solved on 18-Apr-2005 and MWA001_S2&S3, solved on 20-Apr-2005). Figure 5: DL MCS distribution - Network

The maximum MCS observed in DL is MCS 8, which is supported by TRX class 4, the highest TRX class implemented in DST network. In figure 5, most MCS usages in EDGE Downlink are MCS3, MCS5 and MCS8. MCS 3 is always used at the beginning when a TBF starts as the parameter set TBF_DL_INIT_MCS = MCS 3. Then, when link adaptation process is trigger (before TBF is finished) and in case of good radio condition, the maximum MCS i.e. MCS5 and MCS8 can be probably selected for TRX class 2 and TRX class 4 respectively.

In B8 release, only the MCS 1 to MCS 4 coding schemes are available in EDGE Uplink. That is the reason why the maximum UL MCS shown in figure 6 is limited at MCS 4 for whatever TRX class (either TRX class 2 or TRX class 4) implemented in the network. MCS 3 usage is the highest partition in UL as it is the initial MCS for a TBF referring to the parameter set, TBF_UL_INIT_MCS = MCS 3. In addition, the UL TBF traffic is generally a short transfer e.g. signaling traffic, so TBF may be finished before link adaptation is trigger to the higher MCS i.e. MCS 4.

When EDGE is activated, it can also support highest coding scheme (in both DL and UL) for GPRS i.e. CS3 and CS4. We can simply implement these CSs by setting parameter MAX_GPRS_CS = CS4. Thus, in figure 7 and 8, CS3 & CS4 usages have increased since EDGE deployment. The overall number of RLC CS blocks has decreased in both DL and UL since EDGE/GPRS CS3&CS4 activation; however, the GPRS data volume does not decrease because when the higher coding scheme (CS3-CS4) was introduced, it can send the same amount of data with fewer CS blocks than the lower coding scheme (CS1-CS2). In addition, after cells are able to support EDGE, the EDGE capable mobile phones would preferably generate the RLC MCS (EDGE) traffic instead of previously the CS traffic the MCS traffic growth is shown in figure 5 and 6.

Figure 10: UL MCS retransmission rate - Network

DL MCS retransmission rate is in the range 5% to 10% as in figure 9. UL MCS retransmission rate is in the range 0.7% to 1.5% as in figure 10. The MCS retransmission rate in UL is much lower than the one in DL. It may be linked to that the maximum MCS available in UL is only MCS 4 restricted in B8 release, while up to MCS 8 available in DL (see MCS traffic in figure 5 and 6). In the same radio condition, the higher MCS (more sensitive to interferences) is used, the more opportunities to retransmit the data should be. However, the higher retransmission rate in EDGE is more acceptable than in GPRS because EDGE offers high throughput (high MCS) which is easier to have more retransmission but the retransmission procedure for EDGE is more efficient thanks to the EDGE family concept that allows changing the modulation and coding scheme within a given family during retransmission. The retransmission of a block may be done with the same MCS as used for the first transmission or with a different more robust MCS, contrary to GPRS the block is always retransmitted with the same CS.

Figure 11: DL CS retransmission rate - Network

DL CS retransmission rate is in the range 2.5% to 3.3% as in figure 11. The DL retransmission rate in GPRS is higher after GPRS/CS3-CS4 activation. It is mainly due to the increment of retransmitted CS3&CS4 blocks, which relates to more CS3&CS4 usages (see in figure 7). In GPRS, the retransmission procedure is not much efficient because the retransmission of a CS block is always done with the same CS, and in the same radio condition; the higher CS (more sensitive to interferences) should bring more opportunities of the retransmission. As a consequence, when the highest coding scheme is applied for GPRS, the CS retransmission rate increases.

From the EDGE drive test in DST network, the majority of (M)CS usage is MCS 5 (35.3%) and then follows with CS 2 (25.1%) and MCS 8 (19.1%). This (M)CS distribution is well relevant to TRX class SITES distribution in table 16. MCS 5 is the highest partition because most of cells in the network support TRX class 2 while MCS 8 together with MCS 6 and MCS 7 is around 27.7% (the 2 nd highest partition) because the 2nd majority of cells support TRX class 4. By the way, the practical (M)CS usage is not only depending on TRX class implemented but also very significantly depending on the radio condition as the function of link adaptation process is always trying to select the most suitable (M)CS for each radio condition. Basically, link adaptation should apply low (M)CS in case of poor radio condition, but the high (M)CS in case of good radio condition.

Table 18: EDGE drive test / RLC throughput DL per TS distribution - network

From the EDGE drive test in DST network, the highest partition of RLC throughput DL per TS is in the range 12 to 23 kbits/sec (45.4%) which is corresponding to that MCS 5 is the majority obtained MCS and max. theoretical RLC throughput DL per TS of MCS 5 is 22.5 kbits/sec. On the other hand, the result shows the low partition of high RLC throughput DL per TS i.e. 8.8 % for the range 34 to 45 kbits/sec and only 2.8% for the range 45 to 55 kbits/sec, although the 2nd majority of cells support TRX class 4 (Max MCS = MCS8) and max. theoretical RLC throughput DL per TS of MCS 8 is 54.5 kbits/sec. We have to be very careful to consider this result of RLC throughput DL per TS as it is the Mobility Test, which the radio condition can be changed all the times and the occurrence of cell reselection is also the very important factor to impact the throughput as the data transfer have to stop for a while. In addition, each MCS can give various RLC throughput DL per TS depending on the radio condition.

Figure 27: (M)CS vs. RLC Throughput DL per TS Network

From figure27, we can see that the max. RLC Throughput DL per TS from drive test can reach to the max. theoretical value for every (M)CS but the average RLC Throughput DL per TS is still not much close to the max. theoretical value especially for high (M)CS e.g. MCS8 : Max (Theoretical & Drive test) is 54.4 kbits/sec while Average (Drive test) is only 31.3 kbits/sec. Indeed the radio condition plays the major role to the value of RLC Throughput DL per TS for each (M)CS, moreover, the high (M)CS is more sensitive to the radio condition it implies the throughput may change very suddenly if the radio condition is changed.

Conclusion
EDGE Implementation results:
EDGE deployment was done successfully for 152 sites in the entire DST network from 19 Feb 05 to 2 Apr 05. - EDGE TRX Class 2 : 87 sites - EDGE TRX Class 4 : 65 sites However, this EDGE implementation did not completely achieve the target plan because some sites in the plan is not on-air yet and some existing sites are still waiting for the additional E1.

EDGE QoS performance results:

Quality of Service for EDGE is measured by: - KPI/RNO statistic - Drive test performance Based on those results, it can verify that almost of sites in EDGE roll out activity could support EDGE properly as their implemented TRX class without major QoS problem. However, there were 3 cells, SRI001_3, MWA001_S2 & S3 that we found the secondary Abis problem when EDGE was activated but the problem could be fixed later on 18-Apr-05 for SRI001_3 and 20-Apr-05 for MWA001_S2 & S3.
