EXPLOSIVES AND ROCK BLASTING Problem Set #1 Due Feb 7 1) Calculate the detonation pressure of Titan 1000LD 100%

Emulsion (Dyno Product) in lbs/in2 . What would you estimate the maximum borehole pressure to be for this explosive. Determine AWS, ABS, RWS, RBS for this material. Document the values used for ANFO. 2) The product in problem 1 is to be loaded in 7 7/8-inch hole. Calculate the loading density (lb/ft of hole). 3) You question the performance of the explosive in problem one and have no time to test the VOD using modern equipment. The only option at this time is to use the archaic Dautriche method. A 24-inch long 6-inch diameter, unconfined sample of the explosive is to be used. The detonation cord is inserted 6.0 inches from the primer end (left) and 6.0 inches from the free end (right). The DET cord collision mark is measured 8.4 inches to the right of the center of the plate. What is the VOD if the DET cord velocity is 23,000 fps? Is there justification in questioning the performance of the product? 4) One pound of explosive was detonated 75 feet underwater. The bubble oscillation was found to be 88 ms. Calculate the bubble energy of this explosive. Assume the water is at 40 F and sea level conditions. 5) Determine the DC voltage required to energize 20 DuPont caps wired as a single series. The caps have 12-foot iron legwires. The duplex shot-line is #14 AWG copper and 1000 feet long. No connecting wire other than the existing legwires is used to attach the caps to the shotline. What voltage is required for AC firing? Recommend an AC voltage that is commonly available. 6) A total of 12 caps with 12 foot iron leg wires are wired in parallel using a total of 200 conductor feet of #14 AWG copper buswire (reverse connected). This pattern is connected to a 2000 foot #12 AWG duplex shotline. What AC voltage is needed? 7) Assume a pattern consists of 160 16-foot copper wire DuPont MS delay caps in five series of 32 caps per series with a total of 1000 feet of duplex 14 AWG copper wire used to connect the caps to the voltage source (no buswire or connecting wire). Determine the required DC voltage and power in watts needed to shoot the caps. 8) A construction shot is to be detonated using 88 Atlas caps with 40 foot copper leg wires. The shot line consists of 2600 feet of 12 AWG duplex copper wire. Determine the optimum number of caps per parallel series and the minimum DC voltage to detonate the blast. Is a DC blasting machine which produces 200 volts and capable of 3000 watts adequate? 9) The diagram shown below is to be used to energize a number of caps in an unbalanced series/parallel circuit. The first pattern consist of 5 rows of 12 caps each. These caps have 50-foot copper leg wires and are reverse connected to a total length of 120 conductor feet of 12 gage copper bus wire. The bus wire is connected at "C" to 400 feet of 14 gage copper duplex line which, in turn is connected at "B" to the main shot line (10 gage copper). Six hundred feet further along the main shot line a second pattern is connected to the main line at "D" using 200 feet of 14 gage duplex copper. No bus wire is used in this pattern. The second pattern consists of two rows of 20 caps each. These caps have 6 foot leg wires. Can a 220 VAC power source connected at "A" be used to energize the caps?
