COLLEGE OF EDUCATION INTERNSHIP FINAL ASSESSMENT FOR 402.15 Intern's Name Date____November 27, 2012_________ at _________________Jonas Samson Junior High Meadow Lake_________________________________________________ School School Address: _____715 7th Avenue West __________________________________________________ School Phone: ____236-5686___________ Co-operating Teacher(s): ____Rob Kozinski__________________ Teaching grade(s) and areas:_______ Math-9, Science-9, Language Arts-8, Social Studies-8, Health-8, Physical Education 8,9______________________________ CO-OPERATING TEACHERS ASSESSMENT (Approximately one half page of prose) 1. The Contextual Description of the teacher, learner, subject matter and community: Cheyne Dallyn is teaching at Jonas Samson Junior High which is a school with students grades 7-9, 460 students through the 3 grades. The community is unique in that it has many students that come from very different cultural backgrounds. Having such a high number of grade 7-9 students creates many challenges as this age group is dealing with many changes within their lives. Jonas Samson strives to develop the whole student, therefore along with a strong emphasis on academics. There is also a very strong emphasis on athletics, fine arts, and many other extra curricular opportunities. With all of the extra curricular going on we hope to provide each student a stage on which they can perform.

While at Jonas, Cheyne has been placed in both a Grade 8 & 9 classroom setting. Cheyne has been given the opportunity to teach and observe Grade 8 Social Studies, Language Arts, Physical Education, and Health. He also taught Grade 9 Math, Science, and Physical Education. Cheyne has been able to extend his growth within the school by helping out with the boys volleyball team and observing an RTI group. This has been a great experience for Cheyne but has been difficult as he has to bounce back and forth between two Co-operating teachers and their designated subject areas. Cheyne has had the opportunity to visit other schools which included an elementary school (Lakeview) and a northern school (Minahik Waskahigan School in Pinehouse Lake). Both these opportunities have given Cheyne the insight on different grade levels, different school dynamics, as well as each school communitys cultural perspectives. 2. The Summary of Extended Practicum performance based on program goals including indicators of proficiency, growth and future goals: At the beginning of the current school year Cheyne developed a positive relationship with the students of Jonas Samson Junior High. Cheyne has taken on many challenges and risen to the occasion. He was put to work right away by teaching one lesson per day. We started him teaching Physical Education because it helped to put him in his comfort zone. Since that time Cheyne has become even more involved as he progressed from teaching a several lessons per day, to half time teaching, and to teaching full time in the classroom. A major challenge for Cheyne is the fact that he has been working with two cooperating teachers with varying teaching styles. Cheyne has also gone out of his way to provide tutoring time for students at noon hours and after school so that the students can enjoy successful learning experiences. Cheyne has also been involved in our extra-curricular programs. He is helping coach our boys volleyball team and basketball teams. Cheyne has also volunteered his time working with students at Lakeview Elementary running after school programs. This program is set up to help students enhance their reading and speaking ability. So Cheyne is now learning the art of balancing planning, marking, and coaching, along with personal life experiences. Cheyne has become an accepted colleague on our staff. He is not seen as just an intern. He is seen as an equal, operating on a system of mutual respect. Although Cheyne still has some areas to focus on for improvement, we have seen tremendous professional growth from this young man. Cheyne has really developed professional competence in the areas of Math and Science (subjects he was originally unprepared to teach). It has been quite evident throughout his time here at Jonas that Cheyne has shown he really cares for the students. This has been demonstrated over and over again by the way Cheyne has gone out of his way to talk to students and build relationships with them. The departure of Cheyne will be a loss for Jonas

Samson. Based on what we have seen teaching seems to be the natural choice for him.

SUMMARY OF PROGRESS TOWARDS PROGRAM GOALS Please include your written comments, based on evidence and interpretations collected in the Professional Growth Portfolio and in documented observations over the term. (Approximately one half page per goal) The teacher candidate ______Cheyne Dallyn____________________ has achieved in the following areas:

1. Support broad areas of student growth by providing varied and constructive learning opportunities
Demonstrated proficiency and growth: In Physical Education Cheyne showed flexibility due to unfavorable weather conditions. Cheyne had to move the lesson indoors which created new challenges. Cheyne has been teaching a Financial Planning unit in math that teaches students some basic life skills. This adaptation was made in order to make our class more motivating/interesting. In Language Arts Cheyne helped prompt those students who were struggling to generate ideas for a creative writing assignment. Cheyne used technology (Smartboard, portable computer laptops) to enhance instruction and increase student learning Cheyne has demonstrated an emphasis on connecting course content/instruction to real life experiences. Cheyne has used various methods of teaching in order to meet the learning requirements/needs of individual students. Ex: Enriched and modified math booklets. Cheyne demonstrates professionalism through personal appearance and presentation.

2. Affirm dignity and respect for individuals (students, families, colleagues)

Demonstrated proficiency and growth: Cheyne operates on a system of mutual respect with students and staff alike. He demonstrates this through actions that indicate individuals are valued. Has reasonable knowledge of family histories and value systems having grown up in this community. Students are made to feel welcome and safe in the classroom. They are often treated as an equal, a valuable piece of the classroom puzzle.

Cheyne participated in Parent Teacher interviews and discussed student development with their guardians. Cheyne has continually held high expectations for all of his students and strives to help students achieve individual success. Students who struggle with certain concepts do not like to particiate in class and share answers. Cheyne overcame this by making sure students have the correct answers before they share with the class. This allows the student to develop a better attitude toward the subject matter and makes them feel better about themselves. Cheyne encourages the participation of all his students instead of the select few that are always willing to give the answer.

3. Strive to support social justice and ecological responsibility

Demonstrated proficiency and growth: All students are made to feel welcome within Cheynes classroom. Cheyne has helped students gain respect for themselves and others through the establishment of classroom expectations and procedures. Cheyne has been able to show that individuals are valued as equal members of the Jonas Samson team. Through classroom discussion of topics and their related topics Cheyne has focused on the development of positive young citizens that carry these values as life long learners. In Physical Education, Cheyne has adapted activities to ensure all students experience some type of success. He goes out of his way to make sure students with special needs are welcomed into the class and come away with the feeling of success. Students are given equal opportunity to answer questions and express their opinions in a democratic manner. This applies to all subject areas. Cheyne is very good at helping students to develop critical insights into current issues both local and abroad. ie: current events

4. Develop as a critical reflective practitioner who connects practical

and theoretical knowledge

Demonstrated proficiency and growth:

Cheyne uses various instructional strategies to make every student has an opportunity to be a successful learner. The lessons which Cheyne has had an opportunity to reteach again were greatly improved from the first time he taught them( Same content different sections). Through reflection and assessment of instructional choice Cheyne has been able to continually assess his work and grow as a professional. Cheyne has dealt with conflict in a cooperative manner making sure students are listened to. Both sides of every argument were discussed with the students. Through our discussions the intern has come to realize the importance of listening to each student and deciphering what they are actually saying. Cheyne has included a number of real life situations and how it applies to the lesson being taught. When students are able to apply the concepts that were learned in school to real life situations it helps with motivating the students to learn. Cheyne has been able to reflect and assess the instructional choices he has used and understands how to improve his lessons through self assessment. Cheyne has stepped out of his comfort zone and was challenged to find out which learning styles work best for each of the students. In Social Studies, Cheyne has explored with students how the effects of historical events and cultural issues have shaped the way we are now educated.

5. Create a positive community in the classroom and school Demonstrated proficiency and growth: On a regular basis Cheyne has come to school demonstrating enthusiasm towards the subjects in which he is teaching. His enthusiasm and caring attitude towards the students has helped to create a positive classroom environment. Students are upbeat for his classes. Students are made aware through his actions and his words that they are valued here at Jonas Samson Junior High. Cheyne was able to maintain enthusiasm, professionalism, and dedication to teaching even as the pressures of full time teaching increased. Cheyne is able to create an environment that helped students realize the concepts of inclusion. Cheyne was able to recognize and help students through a very difficult time in our community.

6. Build instructional competence and strong teacher identity Demonstrated proficiency and growth: Cheyne and I attended a Cultural Camp at Waterhen Lake where he was able to gain knowledge about Aboriginal and Metis perspectives which he has used within the classroom. Cheyne has developed his own identity. He has picked up on teaching ideas/strategies of other teachers, and is also trying ideas of his own and taking some risks throughout the internship process. Cheyne was able to develop very engaging lessons by making the material relevant to the students. Cheyne has used technology in the classroom to help complement his lessons. (Example: Smartboard) Cheyne began and will continue to focus on implementing Aboriginal content and perspectives wherever possible in his teaching areas. Cheyne helped with the creation of tests, assignments, and projects which were displayed in the report card of the students. Cheyne was able to explain evaluation procedures/results with guardians of the students that came to parent teach interviews.

TEACHER CANDIDATES SELF-ASSESSMENT INCLUDE INDICATORS OF PROFICIENCY, GROWTH AND FUTURE GOALS (Approximately one half page of prose) My internship at Jonas Samson Junior High has been an amazing experience and it has helped support my decision to become a teacher. Throughout my internship my skills and knowledge as an educator have continued to increase and I am continuously partaking in opportunities to grow as a professional. As a reflective practitioner I have realized that the role of the teacher must continuously evolve and teachers must continue to learn or risk being left behind by their students and staff. Through my internship experiences in Jonas Samson I have realized how important it is to develop relationships with the students while making sure the students still view you as the teacher. During my internship I have realized how important classroom management is to the development of the students. I believe classroom management starts with developing routines. If you are able to establish routines and procedures as a teacher you can become predictable in your behavior so students know what behavior and actions are expected from them when they are in your classroom. One way that I have made myself predictable to students is by writing on the board what we were doing that class and when assignments were due. Students are able to find out the assignments that are due and what we will be doing each class by reading the white board. I was able to create strong relationships with many students

because of my calm demeanor and patience. I believe through creating relationships with the students I have gained their respect and their trust. This in turn has allowed me to have leverage when trying to get these students to work hard in class, pay attention, do homework, and get assignments handed in. Overall my internship has been fantastic and I am looking forward to continued growth as a teacher.
